2014 Arizona Fall League / Caribbean Winter League Thread

#WCW is back as LHP Wei-Chung Wang gets a Wednesday afternoon start. The box score link will be here.

Four innings of one-run ball for Wang (big double-play ball in the 3rd), but his Glendale team blew a 2-1 lead in the 9th and lost 5-4.

Only 228 in attendance on a weekday, most of which likely pro personnel. Maybe this is one reason why MLB network only gives us the All-Star game on TV, but no other streaming is disappointing as well.

Peoria Top of the 1st

Breyvic Valera flies out to right fielder Clint Coulter.

Tony Wolters grounds out, second baseman Darnell Sweeney to first baseman Nick Ramirez.

Francisco Lindor grounds out sharply, second baseman Darnell Sweeney to first baseman Nick Ramirez.

Peoria Top of the 2nd

Edward Salcedo grounds out, second baseman Darnell Sweeney to first baseman Nick Ramirez.

Hunter Dozier grounds out, third baseman Jason Esposito to first baseman Nick Ramirez.

Jacob Wilson singles on a line drive to center fielder Tyrone Taylor.

Kes Carter singles on a ground ball to shortstop Corey Seager. Jacob Wilson scores.

With Raul Mondesi batting, Kes Carter steals (1) 2nd base.

Raul Mondesi lines out to left fielder Scott Schebler.

Kyle Wren singles on a ground ball to first baseman Nick Ramirez.

Breyvic Valera grounds into a force out, first baseman Nick Ramirez to shortstop Corey Seager. Kyle Wren out at 2nd. Breyvic Valera to 1st.

With Tony Wolters batting, Breyvic Valera steals (3) 2nd base.

Tony Wolters singles on a line drive to right fielder Clint Coulter. Breyvic Valera to 3rd.

Francisco Lindor grounds into a double play, second baseman Darnell Sweeney to shortstop Corey Seager to first baseman Nick Ramirez. Tony Wolters out at 2nd.

Peoria Top of the 4th

Edward Salcedo strikes out swinging.

Hunter Dozier grounds out, third baseman Jason Esposito to first baseman Nick Ramirez.

Jacob Wilson grounds out, pitcher Wei-Chung Wang to first baseman Nick Ramirez.

***

First baseman Nick Ramirez singled three times in four trips, twice the opposite way (line drive to left, ground ball to left, ground ball to right) and drove in a run. Nick did commit his third error of the fall.

Catcher Shawn Zarraga (OBP .417) continues a nice fall in limited playing time -- 6-for-20, all singles, four BB's, four K's.

CF Tyrone Taylor and RF Clint Coulter were each 0-for-4.

You'll find Thursday afternoon's Glendale AFL box score / game log here, game starting later this afternoon.

CF Tyrone Taylor and 1B Nick Ramirez are in the starting lineup, as is Hector Gomez, playing second base. This will be Gomez' first AFL game after a two-week absence.

The AFL sure found parity, as the first-place Glendale record of 9-10-1 shows after a 4-1 win Thursday (standings).

Six of LHP Mike Strong's seven outings have been one-inning scoreless appearances. Strong was 91-92 with his fastball as Gameday's Pitch-by-Pitch will show you.

Peoria Bottom of the 8th

Pitching Change: Michael Strong replaces Mike Thomas.

C. J. McElroy bunt grounds out, pitcher Michael Strong to first baseman Nick Ramirez.

Francisco Lindor grounds out, second baseman Hector Gomez to first baseman Nick Ramirez.

Dominican Box Score

In four games thus far, new 40-man roster 3B Luis "Lucho" Jimenez is just 3-for-17 (zero walks, three K's), but all three hits have gone for extra bases, including his 2nd HR, hit in this game. Jimenez saw his first action of the winter at third base.

FYI -- Consider yourself a true Link Report diehard if you remember the 2006-2007 Maryvale Brewers RHP Luis Jimenez, a 6'7" teenager, just another victim of the era when the Crew did not have a Dominican Academy. Jimenez would actually pitch one follow-up season in the Dominican on a Washington Nationals squad.

In a game his team won, 2-0, one man provided all the offense --

Santurce Top of the 5th

Jorge Padilla flies out to center fielder Jesus Feliciano.

Yenier Bello singles on a fly ball to left fielder Danny Dorn.

A. J. Jimenez flies out to right fielder Anthony Garcia.

Yadiel Rivera homers (1) on a fly ball to left field. Yenier Bello scores.

Jack Lopez grounds out, shortstop Ozzie Martinez to first baseman Cameron Seitzer.

Huge knock for the excitable shortstop; he also reached on an error earlier in the game but was picked off and thrown out stealing.

Although he went 0-for-3, LF and 2014 Timber Rattler Omar Garcia made his winter debut earlier than expected. The Astros' Delino DeShields had to exit after a first inning HBP, Garcia entered (pop out, ground out, pop out).

7:00 PM Central Saturday night for the Fall Star Game (Taylor, RHP Tyler Wagner). Taylor will be in the starting lineup.

The Brewers' West Club lost 6-2 (box).

Facing the D-Backs' Archie Bradley, batting 2nd in the 1st inning, Taylor beat out an infield grounder to third base. Taylor then easily stole 2nd base. Unfortunately, Taylor was doubled off 2nd base on a play he had little right to be, liner to left field. Taylor flew out to right field to end the 3rd before exiting to start the 6th.

Taylor did earn this early-game tweet.

TWEET - Pre-game photo of RHP Tyler Wagner.

Baseball Essential Tweet --

RHP Tyler Wagner has standard sinker/slider stuff. 90-93 FB. Average slider. Will need to throw strikes. Jason Hammel motion.

AFL East Bottom of the 6th

Pitching Change: Tyler Wagner replaces Parker Bridwell.

Rio Ruiz singles on a ground ball to center fielder Hunter Renfroe.

Josh Bell walks. Rio Ruiz to 2nd.

Dalton Pompey grounds out to first baseman Kyle Waldrop. Rio Ruiz to 3rd. Josh Bell to 2nd.

Pitching Change: Nick Maronde replaces Tyler Wagner.

Roman Quinn singles on a sharp line drive to right fielder Steven Moya. Rio Ruiz scores. Josh Bell to 3rd.

Daniel Robertson called out on strikes.

Greg Bird lines out softly to center fielder Hunter Renfroe.

Following up his most recent outing, a tough week for Tyler. Announce team questioning his placement in the AFL not on talent, but on his innings count the last two seasons (over 150+ innings each of the past two years).

Tremendous eight-plus innings effort by RHP Eric Marzec, who is making his case for a spot in the Colorado Springs rotation next spring.

Rough start for Brooks. He gave up a 4 spot in the 1st inning including a 2 out, 3 run homerun.

Went 3 innings and retired the rest of the hitters in order after the big homerun. It seemed like a few were on hard hit balls though. Only 2 hits given up.

Final score 19-6 (box) - a 12-run 7th, ouch! Thankfully no Brewers pitchers were involved in that frame.

Eventful day for Nick Ramirez -- double, single, two walks, a caught stealing, one run, one RBI, one fielding error.

Hector Gomez doubled and singled in four AB's, scoring a run.
