Puerto Rico Box Score

Martin Maldonado's Mayaguez club cruised, 14-3. Maldy doubled in four at-bats, scoring a run and driving in two. He began the game behind the plate, moved to first base, then was lifted late, after grounding out in the 7th with his team up 9-1. We imagine he's fine.

Puerto Rico Box Score

40-man roster catcher Juan Centeno drove in his team's only run with a 9th inning pinch-hit sacrifice fly in a 4-1 loss.

For the winners, another 40-man roster member, SS Yadiel Rivera, singled in three AB's to move his line to .250/.313/.367 (.680 OPS) in 120 winter at-bats.

Centeno and young RHP Joshua Torres have now completed their seasons, as their San Juan team finished 12-28, and was the only one of the five Puerto Rico League teams not to qualify for the round-robin postseason tournament.

No more fun with Centeno's .127/.253/.141 line (.394 OPS) in 71 AB's.

21-year-old RHP Gian Rizzo made his 4th appearance of the winter, and his first in exactly two months, with a perfect inning.

La Guaira Bottom of the 6th

Pitching Change: Gian Rizzo replaces Alex Torres.

Jose Martinez grounds out, third baseman Ray Olmedo to first baseman Jose Flores.

Rizzo's team is qualified for the postseason round-robin, so maybe we'll see him again.

In a 4-1 win, Herrera (again batting third!), playing second base, singled in four at-bats and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Cleanup man Jimenez, batting cleanup, was 0-for-3 but walked twice and scored a run.

And let's remind everyone who Wirfin Obispo is with this detailed December 3rd post.

He's been busy (and very good) --

Aguilas Bottom of the 8th

Pitching Change: Wirfin Obispo replaces Luis Garcia.

Juan Perez grounds out, third baseman Audy Ciriaco to first baseman Luis Jimenez.

Joaquin Arias flies out to left fielder Junior Lake.

Big night for Brewers shortstops --

Hector Gomez' Toros team won 5-0 to win their first postseason game (now 1-3), and hand Jean Segura's Gigantes club their first loss (3-1).

Despite his squad's shutout loss, Segura was 2-for-3 with a walk (did commit his first error).

Gomez, who played third base in this one, homered, doubled, hit a sacrifice fly, and drove in four runs. Sweet. Gomez slugged an impressive .483 at Nashville in 2014 (25 doubles, six triples, 15 home runs in 408 AB's). He's out of minor league options and almost surely will be in Miller Park on Opening Day.

RHP Wirfin Obispo took the loss in this 4-3 game, allowing one run in one inning --

Pitching Change: Wirfin Obispo replaces Rafael Dolis.

Alexi Casilla singles on a ground ball to center fielder Derrick Robinson.

As you can see there, Jean Segura was on the victorious squad. Batting 3rd, Segura was on base three times, infield single (slow roller to short) and two walks. In five postseason games (has hit safely in his first five games of the winter as his team moves to 4-1), Segura is 7-for-18 (one double) with three K's and three walks.

Segura did commit his 2nd fielding error.

Obispo's teammates, Elian Herrera (second base, batting 3rd, 1-for-4) and Luis Jimenez (designated hitter, batting cleanup, 0-for-3, RBI on sacrifice fly), are off to slower playoff starts, each hitting below .200 after a small sample of five games.

Via Tom Haudricourt tweets earlier this week --

Segura did not play any winter ball last year at #Brewers request and wanted to get some action in this winter before spring training.

Playing in game action also allows Segura to put into practice some of the adjustments #Brewers wanted him to make at plate.

So we'll track not just numbers, but types of at-bat's, and each update for the rest of the winter will link past to this post as well, our "Segura tracker"

Sometimes it's a game behind, but the only place to view cumulative numbers for Segura's season is via the Dominican site here.

In five postseason games (has hit safely in his first five games of the winter as his team moves to 4-1), Segura is 7-for-18 (one double) with three K's and three walks.

The sample size is still small, but it does show that Segura's legs are fine. Only one of Segura's seven hits have been hit truly hard (line drive double to left), with one single through the infield (OK, probably that one, too), one bloop, one bunt, and three infield hits. As of this point, speed gets him a glorious .389 average.

And yes, that's a huge part of Jean's game. This should be fun to analyze when we near the end of this postseason (approx. 20-30 games, depending on how deep his Gigantes club goes).

Just getting underway - Dominican Box Score you can follow this evening

Plenty of usual Brewer subjects in this box score -- Hector Gomez, Elian Herrera, Luis Jimenez

Interestingly, the latter two listed have a "new" teammate tonight as Hunter Morris starts at first base.

You'll see via that link on Morris' name above that he hadn't played since December 9th, and only appeared in seven games in his prior stint. We're unaware of any prior injury concern, but welcome back to the winter action, Hunter.

EDIT: Game updates later in this thread.

As was linked via video above, Hector Gomez' only hit in four at-bats was huge. With no minor league options remaining, plan on seeing him in Miller Park Opening Day.

Elian Herrera singled and walked, while Luis Jimenez (0-for-4) and Hunter Morris (0-for-3), but all three couldn't help their team avoid the shutout. Morris flied out to left, and grounded out to first and short (probably a shift on for that last at-bat).

That was Dan Black of the White Sox organization.

Jean Segura was 1-for-5, and is still searching for line drives, even if he did hit two hard ground balls. See the latest in the "Segura Tracker" here.

Puerto Rico Box Score

Martin Maldonado takes this winter league stuff seriously, so he won't be happy after this 3-1 loss as he was behind the plate and 0-for-3 (two groundouts, one flyout). His Mayaguez club falls to 0-2 in the long round-robin. Maldy couldn't quite throw out Javier Baez - let's blame the pitcher.

Even though Orlando Arcia did not play in his Venezuelan League club's first postseason game, we can expect to see more of him.

Translated tweets from this December 30th article--

Orlando Arcia will continue "until the end," said manager Omar Lopez.

Orlando Arcia "I communicated this morning with them (Brewers) and have the green light to play up where the team gets"

Arcia is at 709 at-bats since Opening Day 2014, but he can still jump this high.

Here's a nice "portrait" photo of the young shortstop with a fan.

Dominican Box Score

Jean Segura was 0-f0r-4 with a caught stealing and a throwing error (3rd error in seven games), but his team won 2-1.

The "Segura Tracker" tells you how those at-bats went.

Segura twice failed to drive in a runner from 3rd with less than two outs. His OPS is at .700 after seven games, but it's a "weak" .700 in the still-tiny sample.

Dominican Box Score

1.455

That's Hector Gomez' MVP-type OPS through seven postseason games. Playing third base Sunday and batting 5th, Gomez reached base four times in his club's 7-1 win (two doubles, two walks).

For the losing squad, DH Luis Jimenez was 0-for-3 with one K. He's just 3-for-23 (five walks, five K's, .450 OPS in his seven round-robin games).

Elian Herrera did not play. We did learn that when Herrera missed a week or so earlier this winter, it was because of a thigh injury, but that time frame has long passed.
