Final: @DSL Tigers 5, DSL Brewers 3

DSL Brewers Box Score

Brewers fall to 21-29.

22-year-old RHP Orlando Torrez, a four-year member of the squad, tossed six innings (four runs, three earned), striking out eight while walking none.

Offensively, the Crew managed seven singles, seven walks, and two HBP's, but stranded 12 men. RF Yerald Martinez singled twice and walked, stealing two bases.

Entering this game, the Brewers had the fewest steals in the 36-team league, and not only that, they had less than a 50% success rate (34 SB/36 CS).

That should concern us about the team's athleticism. With Gilbert Lara taking the entire signing pool, you wonder how bare-boned this squad will be in 2015.

Scored one here, should have been more...

Final: Billings 5, Helena 2

Mustangs sweep Brewers with 5-2 win

By Dustin Daniel / Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers (2-2) were swept by the Billings Mustangs (3-1) on Tuesday with a 5-2 defeat at Dehler Park.

The Mustangs would jump on the board first with a couple of doubles in the first inning, one of which would score Aristedes Aquino. Aquino was 3-for-4 Tuesday, coming up a triple short of the cycle and hitting his league-leading 11th homer.

Zach Hirsch (0-1) made his first professional start, going four innings, giving up three runs on six hits and striking out three.

Tyler Mahle (3-4) was solid on the other side for the Mustangs, pitching five and two-thirds innings of one-run baseball, giving up just three hits and striking out five.

The Brewers would tie it up in the fourth with a solo home run from Connor Narron. Narron, playing in his first game in the Pioneer League, went 2-for-3 with a double and the homer.

The Mustangs would take back the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Aquino hit a solo home run to left and Brian O'Grady scored on an RBI single from Garrett Boulware.

They would pad that lead in the seventh when Aquino hit a two-RBI single with the bases loaded.

Sthervin Matos' 15-game hitting streak came to an end as he went 0-for-4 with a strike out. The current high on the team now belongs to Jack Cleary who rides a 10-game streak.

The Brewers and the Mustangs now head back to Helena for two games at Kindrick Field. First pitch Wednesday is set for 7:05 p.m.

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers defeated the Kane County Cougars 3-2 on Tuesday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium to begin a six-game homestand. The Timber Rattlers held off a ninth-inning rally to pick up the one-run win over the team with the best record in the Midwest League.

David Denson drew a walk to start the Wisconsin second inning. Clint Coulter followed by crushing a 1-2 pitch from Kane County starter Duane Underwood over the wall in left for a two-run homer. Coulter's seventeenth home run of the season made it 2-0 in favor of the Rattlers (56-50 overall, 20-17 second half).

Wisconsin starting pitcher Anthony Banda protected that lead by tossing five scoreless innings The lefty allowed two hits, walked four, and struck out seven. Banda has a 15-inning scoreless streak.

Jacob Rogers got Kane County (67-40, 22-15) on the scoreboard with a two-out, solo home run to center off Victor Diaz.

The Rattlers scratched out an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. David Denson singled with one out. He went to second on a wild pitch and took third on another wild pitch. Omar Garcia singled with two outs to get Denson home for a 3-1 lead.

Diaz worked a scoreless seventh and retired the first two batters he faced in the top of the eighth. That brought Rogers back to the plate. The Cougars first baseman hit another solo home run, this one to right-center, and Kane County was back within a run.

Luke Curtis, the 18th round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2014 draft, came on in the top of the ninth inning to go first his first Midwest League save. Catcher Cael Brockmeyer started the Kane County ninth with a single and was replaced by pinch-runner Giuseppe Papaccio. Curtis, who had two saves at Helena in the Pioneer League prior to joining the Timber Rattlers on July 7, threw a wild pitch to allow Papaccio to take second base. Jeffrey Baez lined out to deep center for the first out and Papaccio went to third with the tying run.

Carlos Penalver was next and he hit the ball hard on an 0-1 pitch. The line drive was right at third baseman Tyler Brennan. Papaccio was too far away from third to get back and Brennan jogged over to touch third to double off the runner for a game-ending, unassisted double play.

Banda picked up the win to move his record to 6-6 on the season. Banda was 1-5 through May 22. He is 5-1 since snapping a personal three-game losing streak with a win on June 8.

Rattlers second baseman Chris McFarland went 1-for-4 with a first inning single. McFarland moved his current hitting streak to thirteen games. His hitting streak is the longest of the season by a Timber Rattler and the longest active hitting streak in the Midwest League.

Game two of the series is Wednesday night. Tristan Archer (3-5, 4.15) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Kane County has named Jen-Ho Tseng (6-0, 2.68) as their starter. Game time is 7:05pm.

Wednesday is a Fox Communities Credit Union Cash Giveaway. Fox Communities Credit Union will be giving away envelopes to fans who attend this game. Some of the envelopes will have cash inside. It's that simple.

The Anthony Banda audio in the blog post is in video form at the article link here.

Banda changing it up for Timber Rattlers

Tim Froberg, Post-Crescent Media

GRAND CHUTE – The change-up is a pitch that most young pitchers struggle to master.

Anthony Banda throws it with both confidence and command, and it's helping the 20-year-old left-hander emerge as a solid pitching prospect in the Milwaukee Brewers farm system.

Banda threw five shutout innings Tuesday night to extend his scoreless innings streak to 15 and pick up the mound win for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in a 3-2 win over Kane County at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

In squaring his season record to 6-6 and lowering his earned run average to 3.66, Banda allowed just two hits and struck out seven.

Banda, a 10th-round pick by Milwaukee out of San Jacinto Junior College in the 2012 first-year player draft, has worked his way into a serious groove. He has allowed a combined total of five hits in his last two scoreless starts with 13 strikeouts.

Banda's fastball registered in the low 90s Tuesday, and he frustrated hitters by throwing his change-up and a curveball for strikes.

"He's a fastball, change-up guy," said Wisconsin manager Matt Erickson. "He's a young pitcher that has pretty dang good command of a change-up. Most of the first half of the season, he pitched off his change-up and fastball. The last month or so, he's really tried to work a curveball into the mix. He threw 22 curveballs tonight and got 13 strikes out of it. So you could see he had some confidence in it tonight.

"Right now, he does a good job with that changeup, getting righties and lefties out. But if he can add that third pitch, that breaking ball, that will make him really tough to beat."

Despite a 35-minute rain delay, Banda found an early rhythm, striking out two of the first three batters he faced.

"I thought I had all three of my pitches working and my defense really played well behind me," said Banda. "They were continually on their toes and making plays for me to get me out of innings. The key was just pounding the zone and getting early-count outs because that allows you to go deeper in the game."

According to Erickson, Banda threw just seven curveballs in his previous start, but he tripled those numbers on Tuesday.

"I've faced them before and they know I'm a fastball, change-up guy," said Banda. "Now, I'm incorporating a curveball and I think I had them guessing throwing all three pitches."

Banda is rated by Baseball America as the 27th best prospect in the Milwaukee farm system.

"We've been working on his breaking pitches," said Wisconsin catcher Clint Coulter. "He's got great command of the change-up. We were looking at his stats the other day and he was throwing just as many change-ups as he was fastballs. It's crazy how good command he has of his change-up. He can throw it at any time in the count. If we can get that curveball going, he's going to be really dangerous."

Coulter socked a two-run homer, and Omar Garcia added an RBI single to give the Rattlers all the runs they needed.

Coulter's long blast over the left field wall was his 17th home run of the season, tying him with Michael Ratterree for the team lead. His round-tripper came off losing pitcher Duane Underwood, a second-round pick by the Chicago Cubs in 2012.

"I'm just trying to get on base, that's the name of the game," said Coulter, a first-round pick by the Brewers in the 2012 draft. "It was a curveball down the middle, a little bit low and the spin on it, well it wasn't one of his tighter ones."

Banda was lifted after 80 pitches, and Victor Diaz allowed two runs on four hits in three innings before Luke Curtis pitched a scoreless ninth.

The Cougars had the tying run on third base with one out in the ninth, but Carlos Penalver lined out to third baseman Taylor Brennan, who stepped on the third-base bag to double off Kane County's Giuseppe Papaccio for a game-ending double play.

Johnson's gem provides 'Tees 4-3 win over Jupiter

Left-hander ties Tyler Wagner for team-lead in wins with victory

By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees

Brevard County starting pitcher Hobbs Johnson, seen here in a game from earlier this season, went a career-high eight inning and retired 17 straight batters, as the Manatees defeated the Jupiter Hammerheads, 4-3 at Space Coast Stadium on Tuesday night. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

VIERA, Fla. - Starter Hobbs Johnson dominated and went a career-high eight innings, as the Brevard County Manatees won their third straight and defeated the Jupiter Hammerheads, 4-3 on Tuesday night at Space Coast Stadium.

Johnson (10-7, 3.15 ERA) showed a bit of rust after Brevard (19-15 second half, 55-45 overall) and Jupiter (10-27, 37-69) were delayed by rain and high winds for an hour and 12 minutes prior to tonight's contest, but picked up steam after the third.

After allowing a run on a bloop single to right by Justin Bohn, Johnson retired the next two batters to end the inning. That set in motion a streak of 17 straight Hammerheads sat down in order, which lasted until the start of the ninth inning.

With the Manatees ahead 4-1, manager Joe Ayrault sent Johnson back out to the mound in the final frame, as the left-hander looked to finish off his first career complete game.

However, it was not in the cards. Johnson worked full counts on the first two hitters, both of whom reached base. Bohn grounded a single to center and Colin Moran drew a walk to bring the tying run to the plate and end the lefty's night.

Johnson finished the evening with three runs allowed on four hits, walked two and struck out four. With the win, the North Carolina product tallied his first victory in the month of July and tied Tyler Wagner for the team-lead in that category with 10. They are both now deadlocked for second place in the Florida State League, as Bradenton's Chad Kuhl has the most with 11.

Scott Lieser came in to close out the victory, but had an auspicious beginning. The first batter he faced, Matt Juengel, crushed a ball into the left-center field gap. Bohn scored easily and Moran went to third, which cut the 'Tees lead down to two.

That was the only hit the Minnesota native would allow. After a sacrifice fly to right by Viosergy Rosa scored Moran and trimmed the lead to 4-3, Lieser shut the door on his second save of the year.

Juengel would swipe second base, but Avery Romero skied out to center and Chad Wallach popped out to second to end the ball game.

Despite holding the lead for a majority of the ballgame, the Manatees initially had trouble getting hits off Jupiter starter Matt Milroy (0-6, 9.43).

The right-hander baffled the 'Tees through the first 4.1 innings. In that time, Milroy struck out five hitters and allowed three baserunners, two of which were on hit-by-pitches.

Even with no hits surrendered, Milroy had a lack of control and began to tire in the fifth thanks to a high pitch count. After he plunked Garrett Cooper, the former Illinois star left a fastball over the plate to Brandon Macias.

The 'Tees third baseman crushed it deep to left-center for a go-ahead, two-run blast. His second home run of the year was Brevard's first hit of the night and it gave them the lead, 2-1.

That was the only hit Milroy would surrender, as his night ended after that inning. The righty pieced together his best start in the FSL, recording seven strikeouts in the loss.

In the sixth, the Manatees would tack on two more against reliever Casey McCarthy. Tyrone Taylor started it all off with a bunt single and a stolen base, but the next two hitters struck out. After Taylor swiped third, Victor Roache lined a base-hit into left field to drive home the run and extend the lead to two.

Roache swiped Brevard's third bag of the inning to put another runner in scoring position for Alfredo Rodriguez. The Manatees' captain clutch delivered again with a grounder through the middle. Roache motored home to push the advantage to 4-1, but Rodriguez was gunned down trying to go to second on the throw to the plate, which ended the inning.

Brevard ran wild again tonight with another four stolen bases against Jupiter's catcher Wallach. In the first two games of this series, the Manatees have tallied 10 stolen bases and have only been caught twice.

Michael Reed swiped another bag tonight, which gives him a total of four over the last two nights. The former fifth-round pick is now the active FSL-leader in stolen bases with 27.

Damien Magnifico (7-5, 3.67) will look to win his third consecutive decision for the Manatees when he takes the mound at 6:35 PM (5:35 Central). He will be opposed by Jupiter's righty, Austin Brice (6-7, 4.14), who is looking for his first win since July 9.

Brewers drop second straight game to Billings

By Helena Independent Record

http://bloximages.chicago2.vip.townnews.com/helenair.com/content/tncms/assets/v3/editorial/1/d0/1d08c656-17a7-11e4-840c-001a4bcf887a/53d87d7d5f017.preview-620.jpg

Billing's Mustangs' Alberti Chavez (16) catches the throw as Helena's Gregory Munoz (3) steals second in their game in Billings Tuesday July 29, 2014.

Connor Narron shined in his Helena Brewers debut, but it wasn’t enough as his team fell 5-2 to Billings on Tuesday at Dehler Park.

The catcher, called up from the Arizona League to replace Greg McCall, who had season-ending knee surgery, was 2 for 3 with a double and a home run in his first game wearing a Helena uniform. But he was the only player with more than one hit for the Brewers, who were just 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position.

The Mustangs were led by right fielder Aristides Aquino, who went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and finished just a triple shy of the cycle. His solo shot in the fourth inning off of Brewers starter Zach Hirsch was his 11th home run this season.

Connor Narron’s homer was a two-run jack, also coming in the fourth frame.

Hirsch (0-1) was charged with the loss after allowing three runs on six hits through four innings of work. Billings starter Tyler Mahle (3-4) earned the win after giving up just one run on three hits through 5 2/3 innings while fanning five. Brennan Bernardino picked up his fifth save for Billings, striking out two in a scoreless ninth to stave off any chance of a Helena comeback.

The two teams will meet again tonight, only this time they will be in Helena. First pitch at Kindrick Legion Field is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

A Huntsville fan posted video of Nick Shaw's walkoff double from Monday night.

In what could be my very last Stars game (after moving to Huntsville in 2009 and seeing over 150 games) the boys deliver in dramatic fashion, something I have been fortunate enough to see happen many, many times.

Cool...hopefully Huntsville evnetually gets a new stadium and team.
