Huntsville Notes via Steve --

OF Kentrail Davis snapped an 0 for 17 skid with his go ahead two-run double in the eighth inning Sunday. Still it has had a slow month of July after batting .340 in June. In 22 games in July, Davis is batting only .131 with 6 RBI. Davis is just 4 for his last 45 (.114) at the plate in his last 17 games… SS Yadiel Rivera went 4-4 with two doubles. His four hits were the most since he had four hits on June 5th this season when he went 4-4 against Bradenton while playing for High-A Brevard County. Rivera’s career high is five hits July 18th, 2011 while playing rookie ball for Helena. In his last 15 games, Rivera is batting .420 (21-50) with 2 RBI. Rivera’s hot hitting started on July 10th…

C Robinzon Diaz pinch hit in the seventh and delivered an RBI single. He stayed in the game and finished 1-2. Diaz extended his hitting streak to nine straight games and continues to excel at Joe Davis Stadium. All nine of his RBI have come in Huntsville. Diaz is batting .389 at home, compared to .214 on the road…2B Nick Shaw went 2-3 with an RBI. Since the All-Star break, Shaw is batting .353 with 12 RBI in 26 games. Shaw has the 3rd best batting average in the Southern League during the second half of the season. Jose Peraza of Mississippi has the highest batting average in the second half of the season at .364. When Shaw plays 2B, he is hitting .379 compared to just .231 when he plays SS…1B Nick Ramirez had two RBI Sunday. It was his third straight two-RBI game…C/INF/OF Hector Giminez went 0-3 and continues to climb out of his early slump since joining the Stars. He started just 1 for 16 in his first five games. In his last six games, he is now 6 for 23 (.261) with 2 RBI.

Since the Stars clinched the 1st half championship they’ve gone 23-25.

Final: @Brevard County 5, Jupiter 4

Manatees hold off late rally to beat Jupiter, 5-4

Tyler Wagner goes six innings for team-high 10th win of the year

By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees

Manatees starting pitcher Tyler Wagner, seen here from a game earlier this year, allowed just two hits and one unearned run, as he lowered his Florida State League-leading ERA to 1.53 in the Brevard County Manatees 5-4 win over the Jupiter Hammerheads on Monday night at Space Coast Stadium. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

VIERA, Fla. - Behind six stolen bases and another strong performance by Tyler Wagner the Brevard County Manatees defeated the Jupiter Hammerheads, 5-4 at Space Coast Stadium on Monday night.

Wagner (10-4, 1.53 ERA) was phenomenal once again. The Florida State League All-Star went six innings and allowed just one unearned run on two measly hits, which tied a season-low. Wagner walked one and struck out four en route to his team-best 10th victory of the season.

With tonight's performance, Wagner lowered his Florida State League-leading ERA to an incredible 1.53. If he continues his pace, the right-hander will record the best earned run average in the FSL since the Manatees (18-15 second half, 54-45 overall) were founded in 1994. Wagner's current mark is slightly better than the 1.66 ERA that Daytona's Courtney Duncan recorded back in 1997.

Despite the strong start, Wagner barely held on to the victory, as Jupiter (10-26, 37-68) stormed back in the seventh and eighth innings.

With the Manatees in front 4-1, Stephen Peterson came on to relieve Wagner to start the seventh and quickly the Hammerheads' bats came alive. Avery Romero lined a single to left and Chad Wallach immediately singled him to third.

The next batter, Jesus Solorzano, grounded a ball through the hole between third and short. Romero scored easily and Wallach jogged into second, as the lead was trimmed to 4-2.

That was all Jupiter would get in the frame. Peterson sandwiched a strikeout between fly outs to center to keep the Brevard lead intact.

However, the 'Tees would get a run back in the bottom of the frame thanks to some incredible heads up baserunning by Orlando Arcia. After he reached on a single to begin the inning, he advanced to second on a ground out to third by Michael Reed.

With two outs, on the first pitch, Cameron Garfield hit a slow roller towards short. Justin Bohn charged onto the infield grass, but the ball ricocheted off his glove and Arcia advanced to third on the error.

However, Bohn overran the ball, as well. Noticing this, Arcia broke for home and scored without a play to push the lead back up to three.

Jupiter's bats remained hot, as they peppered Peterson again to start the eighth. Colin Moran, Matt Juengel and Viosergy Rosa singled consecutively to start the frame, which chased the left-hander from the ball game.

Mark Williams came on to halt the rally and started strong, as he forced Romero to ground one back to the mound to get the force at home.

Yet, the attack was not over. Continuing to be a menace with the lumber, Chad Wallace roped his third hit of the night into left-center field. Juengel and Rosa scored, while Romero slid into third with the tying run, as the Manatees' lead was cut to 5-4.

That was as close as Jupiter would get. Williams induced an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play off the bat off Solorzano to get out of the jam.

In the ninth, the Hammerheads could not even sniff a baserunner. Williams recorded three straight air outs, two to center and one to second, to shut the door on his team-leading 10th save of the year.

Brevard tallied their first four runs in the first and third innings. In the first, Nathan Orf hit the Manatees' first lead-off home run of the year on a shot the bounced off the left field foul pole.

After Jupiter tied it on Wallach's first RBI, a double down the left field line, the 'Tees erupted for three in the third. Following Reed's go-ahead single to center, he initiated a double steal that allowed Arcia to swipe home. Reed would later score the third run of the inning on a wild pitch.

Despite a terrific night at the plate, Brevard County took advantage of the catcher, Wallach, defensively. The Manatees swiped a season-high six bases, including a career-high three from Reed, en route to their second straight win.

Three Manatees hitters - Orf, Arcia and Garrett Cooper - tallied multi-hit games. Cooper led all 'Tees with three hits, which was a season-best and also tied a career-high.

The Manatees will look to make it three-in-a-row tomorrow, as they battle the Hammerheads again. First pitch at Space Coast Stadium is scheduled for 6:35 PM (5:35 Central). Hobbs Johnson (9-7, 3.13) will look to tie Wagner for the team-lead in wins against fellow right-hander Matt Milroy (0-5, 10.72).

Brevard County Box Score

Wonder how many scouts were in the stands tonight -- goodness, this age-appropriate (actually, better than age-appropriate) collection is so much fun to dream on.

When does one T.W. replace another? (Wisconsin's Taylor Williams for Tyler Wagner).

21-year-old Michael Reed would be a fantastic target for any trade partner.

Still just 19 (one more week), Orlando Arcia is second on the team to Tyrone Taylor in extra-base hits. Love the Brewers limited but always intriguing Venezuelan signing efforts.

1 ER, 4 H, and 8 K over 6 IP plus 4 BB constitute the good Ariel Pena or the bad? Does anyone know if Pena struggles with all of his pitches or just certain ones?

Some perspective... in all of AAA, Fiers is #1 in K's, Pena is #3, and Nelson is #5. Considering that Fiers and Nelson have both spent time in the majors, that's pretty impressive.

Sounds Snag Series Finale, 3-1

Nashville's Pena Whiffs Eight In Quality Start

Nashville Sounds

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/6/4/4/86792644/cuts/MPS_8555_Large_j0nlc6j3_k3bpmbmk.jpg

(MIKE STRASINGER )

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The first-place Nashville Sounds (59-51) capped off a homestand full of dominant starting pitching performances with yet another good outing, as Ariel Pena shut down the Oklahoma City RedHawks (54-56) in a 3-1 win at Greer Stadium on Monday night.

Pena (8-6), went six innings, allowing just one run on four hits while racking up eight strikeouts. The start wraps up a stellar July for Pena, who went 4-0 with a 3.60 ERA and 43 strikeouts in six starts.

His performance was yet another great one for the Sounds rotation, who posted a 1.07 ERA (5er/42ip) during the eight game homestand.

The Sounds all of their damage offensively in the bottom of the third, as nine players came to the plate, resulting in three runs. After Eugenio Velez brought home the first run on an RBI single, Nashville's patience at the plate paid off as Sean Halton and Caleb Gindl both drew walks with the bases loaded to up the lead to 3-0.

RedHawks starter Mike Foltynewicz (7-7) kept Nashville's bats silent for most of the evening after that, striking out 10 batters in six innings.

The RedHawks got on the board in the top of the sixth when Domingo Santana singled home Preston Tucker, but Pena got the next batter, Carlos Perez, to fly out to center field to end the threat.

Jose De La Torre followed with two innings of scoreless relief, raising his streak of consecutive scoreless appearances to four games. Alfredo Figaro then came on in the ninth and preserved the lead to pick up his second save of the season.

The Sounds will now embark on an eight game road trip that begins in Colorado Springs with a game Tuesday night at 8:05 p.m. Sounds RHP Mike Fiers (8-5, 2.62) will take to the hill against Sky Sox southpaw Pedro Hernandez (6-6, 6.14).

Nashville Boxscore

Ariel Pena was very solid through 4 but ran into trouble in both the 5th and 6th, though he did manage to escape in the 5th. In a recurring theme his walks are the main issue, even when he's limiting hits. He's only allowed 75 hits in 103.1 innings (6.5 H/9) coming into today's game but he's given up 59 walks and sports a 5.1 BB/9. His K rate is fantastic, he had 108 strike outs over that same span which equates to a 9.4 SO/9. Maybe he'll figure it out enough to be a starter later in his career but with that BB rate he seems destined for the bullpen. His stuff is much better than Hellweg's though he's similarly poor from a command standpoint.

Thank goodness Michael Foltynewicz has trouble harnessing his 100 MPH heat because the Sounds managed just 3 hits but still scored 3 runs.

Rattlers drop road trip finale 6-4 at Fort Wayne

Wisconsin can't hold on to 4-0 lead

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

FORT WAYNE, IN - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers had a 4-0 lead through 3-1/2 innings at Parkview Field on Monday night. But, the Fort Wayne TinCaps chipped away at the lead to tie the game and eventually win 6-4 over the Rattlers in Wisconsin's final game of a six-game trip to the Eastern Division.

Jose Pena gave Wisconsin (55-50 overall, 19-17 second half) the lead in the top of the second inning. Pena launched a two-out, solo home run to left-center for a 1-0 lead. The homer was the eighth of the season for Pena.

Wisconsin loaded the bases in the top of the third on singles by Paul Eshleman and Omar Garcia and a walk to Michael Ratterree. Taylor Brennan stepped in with two outs and the bases still loaded and lined a double into the left field corner. All three runners scored and Wisconsin was up 4-0.

Fort Wayne (45-60, 15-21) got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. Trea Turner doubled to start the inning. An error sent Turner to third base. Franmil Reyes singled through the middle of the diamond with two outs to score Turner.

The TinCaps made it a one run game in the bottom of the fifth. Adolfo Reina singled and Ronnie Richardson doubled to start the inning. Henry Charles knocked in both runners with a single to center and Wisconsin was up 4-3.

Fort Wayne tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. Reyes walked with one out and wound up at third after a single by Jake Bauers. Reina drove in Reyes with a sacrifice fly to center to tie the game 4-4.

In the bottom of the eighth inning against reliever Seth Harvey, Turner reached on a broken bat bloop single to left and stole second. Dustin Peterson tried to bunt Turner over to third, but was hit by a pitch. Harvey struck out the next batter for the first out. Reyes was at the plate when Turner took off for third while Harvey was still in the stretch position. Harvey stepped off and threw to third and the tag looked like it got down on Turner's heel as he slid into the base head first, but Turner was ruled safe. Peterson, the trail runner, took second base on the play and that forced the Rattlers to walk Reyes intentionally to load the bases.

Bauers swung at the next pitch and sent a fly ball deep to right for a sacrifice fly that scored Turner with the go-ahead run. Reina followed with a double to left to drive in Peterson and the TinCaps were up 6-4.

Ryan Butler entered in the top of the ninth and pitched a 1-2-3 frame with two strikeouts for his fourth save of the season.

Chris McFarland extended his current hitting streak to twelve games with an infield single in the top of the seventh inning. That is the longest streak by a Wisconsin hitter this season.

The Timber Rattlers ended their road trip to the Eastern Division with a 3-3 record. Wisconsin won two of three at Lake County, but dropped two of three at Fort Wayne. Wisconsin finished their schedule of games against the East with a 13-10 record, including 7-5 on the road.

The Timber Rattlers return home to begin a six-game homestand with a game against the Kane County Cougars on Tuesday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Anthony Banda (5-6, 3.89) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. The Midwest League affiliate of the Chicago Cubs have Duane Underwood (5-2, 2.44) as their scheduled starter. Game time is 7:05pm.

The homestand begins with a Throwback Night as part of the 20th Anniversary season presented by Bergstrom Automotive. Tickets are thrown back to 1995 prices of $5 for box seats, $4 for reserved bleacher seats, and $3 for grass seats. The Timber Rattlers players and coaches will be wearing jerseys based on the ones worn by the 1995 Rattlers. Plus, look for a special item at the concession stands to be thrown back to its 1995 price.

Cleveland Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera was a Midwest League All-Star as a Timber Rattlers second baseman in 2005 and he is the next bobblehead in the 20th Anniversary Series. The first 1,000 fans to attend Tuesday's game will receive the Asdrubal Cabrera bobblehead courtesy of Modern Woodmen.

Show your business card when you purchase a ticket and for $13.50 you will receive a box seat ticket, a beverage, and your choice of brat or hot dog to take advantage of the Baker Tilly Business Person special. The offer is also available to senior citizens (55 & older) courtesy of WVBO and AM1280 WNAM.

Final: Billings 10, Helena 5

10-5 loss for Brewers puts them in tie for first

By Dustin Daniel / Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers (2-1) dropped the series opener 10-5 to the Billings Mustangs (2-1) Monday night at Dehler Park in Billings.

Sthervin Matos extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a 3-for-5 performance in game one of the two-game series, adding two RBI to bring his season total to 24 through 18 games.

Helena scored 4 of their five runs in the second and would have only two hits the rest of the way. Sthervin Matos had a two-RBI single complimenting RBI base-hits from Alan Sharkey and Brandon Diaz off Billings starter Wyatt Strahan. Strahan went three innings, giving up four runs on five hits.

The Mustangs would do their scoring in bunches, coming up with four runs in both the third and fifth innings. Brian O'Grady and Taylor Sparks each had three-run home runs to push the Mustangs out to a lead which they would never relinquish.

The Helena pitching staff gave up nine hits, six of which were for extra bases.

The loss breaks Helena's winning streak and is the first defeat for the Brewers in the second half of the season.

With wins for Billings and Great Falls, there is now a three-way tie for first in the Pioneer League North Division.

The Brewers and the Mustangs will face off in the finale of their two-game series Tuesday from Dehler Park. First pitch from Billings is set for 7:05 p.m.

Helena Box Score

No extra base hits for the Brewers tonight. Only one multi-hit game, and it came from Sthervin Matos who was 3-for-5 (with a stolen base) to stretch his hitting streak to 15 games as noted above. Matos has struggled defensively while being rotated between 1B and 3B, committing his 6th error in 18 Pioneer League games. Helena had 11 strikeouts in the game, led by Tucker Neuhaus who struck out 3 times. With one out and a runner at third base in the 6th, Brandon Diaz caught a fly ball in centerfield and threw the tagging runner out at the plate to end the inning.

Billings blisters Brewers 10-5

By Helena Independent Record

A pair of three-run homers were the difference Monday in the Helena Brewers’ 10-5 loss to the Billings Mustangs at Dehler Park.

Brian O’Grady smacked his home run in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 4-all after Helena took a 4-0 lead in the second. Taylor Sparks smashed his three-run shot in the fifth frame to extend the Mustangs’ lead to 8-4.

Run-scoring singles by Alan Sharkey, Brandon Diaz and Sthervin Matos had the visitors up early, but that was all the offense the Brewers could muster for the next seven scoreless frames.

Billings’ win halted Helena’s two-game win streak, and was the Brewers’ first defeat of the second half. The Mustangs outhit Helena 9-7, and the two teams combined for five errors in the contest.

Drew Ghelfi (0-1) relieved Brewers starter Josh Uhen after four innings. Ghelfi gave up four earned runs on three hits in his lone frame of work to take the loss. Billings reliever Seth Varner (2-0) pitched two innings of one-hit scoreless ball to earn the win.

Sthervin Matos continued his hot hitting for Helena, as the third baseman went 3 for 5 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored. He was the only player to have more than one hit for the Brewers, who also failed to record an extra-base hit Monday evening.

Ty Washington and Kevin Franklin each had two hits for the Mustangs.

NOTES: Connor Narron joined the Helena Brewers on Monday, replacing catcher Greg McCall. McCall, who hadn’t played for Helena since July 17, is back in Arizona for surgery on a torn meniscus. McCall will spend the rest of the season rehabbing his knee at the Maryvale facility. Narron, a former fifth-round pick for the Baltimore Orioles, was released by the O’s in March after advancing as high as the high-A Frederick Keys. He spent the beginning of this year in the Arizona League and hit .139 in 43 at-bats.

Final: @AZL Indians 13, AZL Brewers 4

Maryvale Box Score

Not a lot of drama for the Maryvale bunch in the last week or so, they either crunch or get crunched, unfortunately more of the latter -- last seven games, oldest to most recent:

10-3 (L)

20-3 (L)

17-6 (W)

16-5 (L)

9-3 (L)

12-2 (W)

13-4 (L)

Props to 22-year-old 31st round UNC-Charlotte RHP Brock Hudgens for some semblance of sanity here - his three scoreless innings gives him eleven innings without an earned run this summer (three unearned runs).

Maryvale pitchers put 21 men on base, seven via walk. 30th round RHP Taylor Stark, also 22, had his first forgettable outing.

Several of these Maryvale pitchers have had decent outings, but there seem to be many more blow-up type stints than we can remember in recent seasons. Overall, it's just too easy to get too high or too low in these Arizona numbers, we shouldn't read too much into them until Wisconsin and beyond, but it'd be nice to see more consistency overall.

Monte Harrison with outfield error #7, that's a bit disconcerting, but it's all about the learning curve.

LH bat Tanner Norton singled and walked twice, but he's not slugging at all, and he's been shoehorned into the first base slot for now at 6'0", 190.

Maryvale Game Log

The Brewers took a 3-0 2nd inning lead, so we may as well highlight that --

AZL Brewers Top of the 2nd

Tanner Norton walks.

Matt Martin singles on a fly ball to right fielder Francisco Miguel. Tanner Norton to 2nd.

Troy Stokes walks. Tanner Norton to 3rd. Matt Martin to 2nd.

Leudi Otano out on a sacrifice fly to right fielder Francisco Miguel. Tanner Norton scores. Matt Martin to 3rd.

With Jonathan Oquendo batting, Troy Stokes steals (15) 2nd base.

Jonathan Oquendo lines out to first baseman Bobby Bradley.

Jorge Quiterio doubles (1) on a line drive to center fielder Silento Sayles. Matt Martin scores. Troy Stokes scores.

Monte Harrison grounds out, pitcher Thomas Pannone to first baseman Bobby Bradley.
