Any suggestions on the best way to get it appraised?

What cards do you have? Are they graded?

 

You might do an eBay search for some recent sales, as graded cards are pretty comparable to others with the same grade.

 

I would guess that it would be better financially to break up a collection into smaller buying units vs. keeping everything together.

Might be interested depending what ya have, years, etc.
