Final: Helena 10, Missoula 8

Brewers 2-0 in 2nd half with 10-8 win

By Dustin Daniel / Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers (2-0) picked up the series win against the Missoula Osprey (0-2) on Sunday afternoon in their rubber match, 10-8.

The two teams would combine for 33 hits in the outing, completing a series filled with offense. The winner of all three games would score in double digits.

Luis Ortega (3-4) had a solid outing, picking up his third win in his last four appearances. Ortega pitched five innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and striking out four.

Yosbel Gutierrez hit his second home run of the year in the fourth, a two-run homer to score Trevor Mitsui.

The Brewers came up with eight of their 10 runs in the fifth through seventh innings. Jack Cleary ripped a two-RBI single off Tyler Bolton (3-3) in the fifth to score Sthervin Matos and Brandon Diaz. Cleary was 3-for-5, extending his hitting streak to 10 games.

With the win, the Brewers collected their first series win at home this season as well as won consecutive games at Kindrick for the first time in 2014.

The Brewers now travel to Billings to take on the Mustangs in a two-game series. First pitch on Monday from Dehler Park is set for 7:05 p.m.

Helena Box Score

The Helena Brewers put up an impressive 18 hits while 7 starters had multi-hit games. They were certainly swinging it, as they took only one walk on the afternoon (although they had three players hit-by-pitches).

After a somewhat slow start to July, CF Brandon Diaz has really heated up again. Today he was 3-for-4 with a double. Over his last last 10 games Diaz is sporting an impressive line, .361 BA / .478 OBP / .528 SLG.

Other players with three hits included C Jack Cleary (3-for-5) and Edgardo Rivera (3-for-5 with two doubles). Red hot Sthervin Matos was 2-for-4 to raise his batting average to .380. SS Luis Aviles went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases. Lastly, while he was one of only two starters not to record multiple hits, 3B Tucker Neuhaus' lone hit was double.

Cy Sneed had another disappointing outing. In 3.0 IP, Sneed allowed 3 earned runs on 6 hits and 1 walk while recording 4 strikeouts. All 3 runs were plated on a Kevin Cron home run.

Helena Game Log

Helena followed up a four run 5th inning by putting up four runs in the 6th. The inning began with five straight Helena singles before Missoula recorded their first out.

Palm Beach 5, Brevard County 4 (Game One)

Long balls subdue 'Tees in opener as Cards win, 5-4

Manatees leave 11 on base in second straight defeat

By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. - Courtesy of a pair of home runs the Palm Beach Cardinals took their second straight from the Brevard County Manatees, 5-4 in game one of Sunday's doubleheader at Space Coast Stadium.

With Palm Beach (24-11 second half, 60-44 overall) and Brevard (16-15, 52-45) deadlocked at four in the top of the fifth, Nick Martini stepped up the plate to lead off the frame against Manatees starter Austin Ross (7-4, 3.66 ERA). On a 2-2 pitch, Martini lofted a high fly ball to left field. Initially looking like a casual fly out, the ball began to carry towards the wall.

Victor Roache chased it to the wall and made a leap to try and make the catch. However, the ball traveled over the wall and into the Cardinals' bullpen for a solo home run. The go-ahead jack was Martini's third of the year and it put Palm Beach in front for good, 5-4.

This came immediately after Brevard County stormed back to even the game at four. Trailing 4-1 against Cardinals starter Nick Petree (5-3, 2.22), Roache began the frame with a four-pitch walk. Mike Garza followed with a double into left-center, which brought the tying run to the plate.

Garrett Cooper, who had not recorded an RBI with Brevard since May 19, came through with a crushing blow. The first baseman hammered a shot over the head of Martini in center. The ball took one hop and went over the wall for a ground-rule double. Both Roache and Garza score to trim the lead to 4-3.

That put an end to Petree's night. The Cardinals ninth round pick from last year went a season-low 3.2 innings. He surrendered four runs - three earned - on a season-high-tying seven hits.

After a pair of outs prevented Cooper from advancing, Orlando Arcia delivered the game-tying knock. With two strikes against him, Arcia slapped a line drive single into left. Anthony Garcia's throw in was up the third base line and Cooper slid in safely to knot the score at four.

The Manatees grabbed the initial lead in the first on a run-scoring single by Michael Reed, but the Cardinals came back in the next half inning.

David Popkins, Garcia and Mason Katz ignited the rally with three straight singles to begin the frame. Ross then forced Jimmy Bosco to pop one up to short. The infield fly rule was called for out number one.

The next hitter, Gerwuins Velzaco, stepped in and quickly fell behind, 0-2. However, Velzaco stood strong and cranked the next pitch to deep left-center field. Roache and Tyrone Taylor followed it back, but all they could do was watch, as it sailed over the wall for a grand slam. The blast was Velzaco's first of the year and it gave Palm Beach its first lead, 4-1.

Ross battled through six innings, but took his third straight loss and fourth of the season. The former LSU Tiger allowed a season-high five runs and nine hits over six innings. He walked one and struck out six in defeat.

Brevard received strong offensive performances from the top of their lineup. Arcia, Taylor and Reed combined to record seven of the team's 10 hits and two of the four runs batted in.

With the loss, the Manatees have dropped a season-worst seven of their last eight entering the second game of Sunday's doubleheader.

Four-run fourth leads 'Tees past Cards in night cap, 4-2

Alfredo Rodriguez's three-run double is the difference in Brevard win

Alfredo Rodriguez, pictured here from a game earlier this year, delivered the game-winning, three-run double in the bottom of the fifth to lead the Brevard County Manatees over the Palm Beach Cardinals, 4-2 in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

VIERA, Fla. - Trailing 2-0 with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Alfredo Rodriguez provided the game-winning, two-run double in the Brevard County Manatees 4-2 victory over the Palm Beach Cardinals in game two of Sunday's doubleheader at Space Coast Stadium.

With Palm Beach starter Silfredo Garcia (6-2, 3.64 ERA) beginning to tire, the Manatees (17-15 second half, 53-45 overall) sparked their rally with a pair of singles from Nathan Orf and Orlando Arcia. Palm Beach (24-12, 60-45) manager then called on left-hander Danny Miranda, Jr. to help the Cards escape the jam.

The first batter he faced, Tyrone Taylor, attempted to sacrifice the runners over. He bunted the ball down the third base line, however, Miranda and third baseman Ildemaro Vargas did not communicate who was to take charge. Vargas went to cover third, while Miranda allowed the ball roll behind him. Everyone was safe to load the bases.

Miranda would buckle down. With the infield in, Michael Reed hit a ground ball at shortstop Greg Miclat. The former Virginia Cavalier threw home to get the force on Orf for out number one.

Mike Garza did not fare any better. He hit a tapper to third and much like Miclat, Vargas threw to the plate to force Arcia for the second out.

The following batter, Rodriguez, wasted no time in making sure the rally was a success. On the first pitch, he sliced a ball past a diving Vargas and down the left field line. All the runners were able to score without a throw, as Rodriguez ended up at second with a three-run, stand-up double to put Brevard in front, 3-2.

The late-inning, go-ahead base hit was Rodriguez's third in less than a month. The Oak Hill, Va. native had the go-ahead two-run double in the 12th inning at Clearwater on June 28. Then on July 12 against Charlotte, Rodriguez drove in the game-winning run on a fielder's choice in a walk-off, 2-1 victory.

After a first pitch ball, Parker Berberet continued the onslaught with a line drive single to right. Rodriguez raced home to score and push the Brevard advantage to 4-2.

However, the Manatees may not have had the opportunity to come back if not for a stellar defensive play in the fourth.

With two out, Mason Katz smashed a high fly ball to deep left. Jose Sermo tracked the ball back to wall and at the last second made a leap to try and snag it. The Puerto Rico native stretched his body into the Cardinals' bullpen and crashed down to warning track with the ball in his mitt.

Katz tipped his helmet to Sermo, as the entire Manatees' defense, including Manny the Manatee, waited to congratulate him in front of the dugout. The home-run saving grab was crucial, as it kept the 'Tees behind by only two.

After a shaky couple of weeks, the Brevard County bullpen shut the door on any potential comeback.

Chad Pierce, who entered in the fifth, threw two spotless innings of relief to pick up his third win of the season. He allowed just one baserunner and struck out one in the victory.

The closer, Mark Williams, regained his control and dominated the Cardinals in the seventh. He retired Palm Beach in order in the final frame to record his ninth save of the season. That puts him in a tie with Tanner Poppe, who is now at Double-A Huntsville, for the team-lead in saves.

Palm Beach grabbed the game's initial lead in the top of the first off Manatees spot starter Mike Strong (1-1, 2.54). After Martini led off the game with a single to right and advanced to second a sacrifice bunt, Bruce Caldwell clobbered a ball to deep center. The ball cleared the wall, just to the right of dead center, for a two-run shot. Caldwell's ninth blast of the year gave the Cards the advantage, 2-0.

Despite the rocky beginning, Strong has a very effective night. The left-hander allowed just those two runs on three hits over four innings. He walked one and struck out three in the no decision.

Once again, it was Taylor who led the offense for the Manatees. The center fielder extended his hit streak to six games with his three-for-three performance. In the four game series with Palm Beach, Taylor hit an absurd .600 (9-for-15) with three runs scored, a home run and six RBI. Including today's doubleheader, Taylor is now hitting .354 in the second half of the season.

Brevard will look carry the momentum into tomorrow's series opener against the Jupiter Hammerheads (10-25, 37-67). First pitch at Space Coast Stadium is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. The Florida State League-leader in ERA, Tyler Wagner (9-4, 1.61), will get the call for the Manatees against fellow righty Jake Esch (4-4, 4.88).

Sounds Drop Heartbreaker, 6-5

Nashville's Blazek Serves Up Quality Start; Clark and Halton Homer

Nashville Sounds

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/1/8/0/86666180/cuts/_MPS4251_Large_26ofiqwe_uvc1lld3.jpg

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The first-place Nashville Sounds (58-51) had their win streak end at five games, as the Oklahoma City RedHawks mounted a four-run rally in the 9th inning to win 6-5 Sunday night at Greer Stadium.

With Sounds reliever Rob Wooten (0-1) on the hill in the 9th, the RedHawks pulled to within one run via a pair of RBI singles by Matt Duffy and Max Stassi, but it was nine-hole hitter Joe Schlafani who provided the game-winning blast: a two-out double off the right field wall that scored two runs. Stassi scored from first on the play, barely beating out the throw from the outfield.

Wooten was charged with a blown save and his first loss of the year.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, the Sounds offense rattled off five runs behind starting pitcher Michael Blazek, who delivered his best outing of the season to help keep the RedHawks at bay for the first six innings.

The righty limited the RedHawks to four hits and fanned two, before leaving with the lead. Blazek's start drops his ERA from 4.41 to 4.15 on the year.

Sounds starting pitchers hold a 1.00 ERA (4 earned runs in 36 innings pitched) in seven games this homestand.

Sounds first baseman Matt Clark tied the game 1-1 in the 2nd inning by lifting his third home run of the year over the left-field wall. The solo shot answered the RedHawks' run from Austin Wates' RBI single in the first inning.

RedHawks starting pitcher Nick Tropeano uncorked a wild pitch in the 3rd inning that allowed Pete Orr to score from third base, giving Nashville a one-run advantage.

Sean Halton added a pair of runs for Nashville with his home run off the top-half of the guitar scoreboard beyond the right field wall, estimated at 430 feet. In the 6th inning, infielder Jason Rogers connected for an RBI double to make it a 5-1 game.

The RedHawks picked up their second run off of Sounds reliever Arcenio Leon in the 8th inning, before Wooten entered in the 9th.

With all three division rivals winning Sunday, the Sounds enter Monday with only a 1 1/2 game division lead.

The Sounds look to win the series against Oklahoma City RedHawks on Monday night at Greer Stadium. RHP Ariel Pena (7-6, 4.53) will make the start for Nashville opposite the RedHawks' RHP Mike Foltynewicz (7-6, 5.12). Jeff Hem will have the call on 102.5 The GAME.

Rattlers tip TinCaps 5-2

Thompson, Williams combine to fan 14 Fort Wayne batters

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

FORT WAYNE, IN - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers got seven doubles from the offense and 14 strikeouts from a pair of pitchers to defeat the Fort Wayne TinCaps 5-2 Sunday at Parkview Field. Chad Thompson struck out six in five innings and earned the win. Taylor Williams struck out eight over four innings for the save.

Chris McFarland singled with one out in the top of the first inning to move his current hitting streak to eleven games, the longest hitting streak by a Rattler this season. Clint Coulter was hit by a pitch, the eighteenth time he's been hit this season, with two outs to extend the inning. Taylor Brennan dropped a single into center to get McFarland home with the first run of the game.

Fort Wayne (44-60 overall, 14-21 second half) tied the game with an unearned run in the bottom of the third. Thompson walked Ronnie Richardson to start the inning. An errant pickoff throw by Thompson allowed Richardson to take second. Richardson went to third on a weak ground out to the mound and scored on a wild pitch by Thompson.

Wisconsin (55-49, 19-16) went back in front in the top of the fourth inning. Brennan drew his league leading 68th walk of the season with one out and Omar Garcia followed with a double to put runners on the corners. Rafael Neda drove in Brennan with a grounder to short.

Jose Pena started the Rattlers fifth inning with a single and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Dustin DeMuth. Michael Ratterree drove a 3-2 pitch to the wall in left for a two out double to score Pena.

Wisconsin tacked on four more doubles and two more runs with single tallies in the sixth and seventh innings. In the sixth, Angel Ortega doubled with two outs. Jose Pena was next and he doubled to drive in Ortega. In the seventh, Ratterree doubled off the top of the wall in left-center with one out. Coulter followed with a double, his second of the game, to knock in Ratterree and the Rattlers were up 5-1.

Williams took over on the mound for Thompson to start the sixth inning and struck out the side in order. The TinCaps did score an unearned run off Williams in the seventh inning, but Williams tossed a scoreless eighth and a scoreless ninth to close out Fort Wayne.

In his last two outings, Williams has struck out seventeen in 10-2/3 innings.

The final game of the series - and of Wisconsin's road trip - is Monday night at Parkview Field. Preston Gainey (3-6, 3.93) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Jimmi Brasoban (1-4, 8.40) is set to start for the TinCaps. Game time is 6:05pm CDT. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 5:45pm CDT.

I like to just browse the box scores to find young guys doing well. It seems we do have some future hope. From today I see

Yadiel Rivera... not long in AA, turned 22 this year, a shortstop, and a .796 OPS at AA. I wonder who he is? But seems 'nice'.

Orlando Arcia... our A+ SS, with MLB glove now, they say... up to .744 OPS at Brevard, and a whooping 19 years old.

Tyrone Taylor... our A+ CF, with a .774 OPS, 15 SB with 3 caught

////what I like is the SS and CF plus guys we have////

21 year old Michael Reed with a .775 OPS at A+; can play all outfield spots; and OPS is OBP heavy at .390

20 year old (21 this week) Clint Coulter, our A- catcher with an OPS .931 and a .413 OBP

I don't know who is Sthervin Matos, but a 20 year old third baseman at Helena who hits home runs (rare in the low ball), 4 hr in 71 at bats

//////////////

It just seems nice to me we have nice prospects at premium positions. It is a long year, but let us hope at year end we say 'cool, we have a future'. To me our MLB club in 2015 will look very similar to 2014. And the MLB guys are good. And it seems we have a fair few future guys.

Brewers beat Osprey, improve to 2-0 in 2nd half

By Helena Independent Record

You can’t judge a team by half a season of play.

The Helena Brewers are evidence of that.

Brewers center fielder Brandon Diaz was 3 for 4 with three runs scored, catcher Jack Cleary was 3 for 5 with a pair of RBIs, and Helena had 18 hits in a 10-8 victory over Missoula on Sunday at Kindrick Legion Field.

With the win, the Brewers improved to 2-0 in the Pioneer League second half to take over sole possession of first place in the North Division. It was the second time Helena has taken a series against the Osprey (0-2) this year, but just the first time the Brewers have captured a series at home. It was also the first time in 2014 that Helena has won back-to-back games at Kindrick.

The first two games of the series were defined by offense, and Sunday was no different. The squads combined for 33 hits in the contest, with all but three players recording one.

Luis Ortega (3-4) got the start for the Brewers, pitching five innings and allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out four. He’d earn the win, while Osprey starter Tyler Bolton (3-3) was charged with the loss. Half of Helena’s runs and hits came with Bolton on the bump.

The Brewers took a 1-0 lead in the first, but Missoula overcame that with a two-run homer by catcher Yosbel Gutierrez in the fourth.

But Helena scored nine runs in innings five through seven and held off a late comeback attempt by the Osprey, who scored two in the ninth to trim the deficit.

Missoula left fielder Justin Williams extended his league-leading hitting streak to 22 games, Brewers first baseman Sthervin Matos extended his hit streak to 14, and Cleary has now recorded hits in each of the last 10 games he’s played.

Helena travels to the Magic City today to take on the Billings Mustangs for a two-game set. First pitch from Dehler Park is slated for 7:05 p.m.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Final: @Huntsville 8, Chattanooga 4

Stars Come Back Late To End Losing Streak

Steve Jarnicki, Huntsville Times

Huntsville, AL - The Huntsville Stars erased a 4-1 deficit late in the game Sunday and scored a combined seven runs in the seventh and eighth innings to come back and defeat the Chattanooga Lookouts 8-4 at Joe Davis Stadium. With the win, the Stars ended their season-long five-game losing streak.

Chattanooga starter Nick Struck, who dominated the Stars over the first six innings, left with a 4-1 lead. Struck gave up just one run on four hits in his six frames. Struck wound up with a no-decision.

The Lookouts brought in lefty reliever Mike Thomas to face Yadiel Rivera to begin the seventh. Rivera, who had a huge day going 4-4 with two doubles, doubled against Thomas to begin the inning. After Kentrail Davis walked, pinch hitter Robinzon Diaz recorded a single scoring Rivera making it 4-2.

The Stars were not finished in the seventh. With runners at second and third base with one out, Josh Fellhauer chipped in with a sacrifice fly scoring Davis, cutting the Lookouts lead to 4-3.

Nick Ramirez then tied the game on a double down the right field line scoring Diaz.

Blake Smith (0-4) then came in from the Lookouts bullpen to get the final out of the inning.

Final: AZL Brewers 12, @AZL Reds 2

Maryvale Box Score

Real nice showing here.

19-year-old RHP Miguel Diaz continues to have a really solid debut stateside season - he struck out seven while walking none (one HBP) in five innings of two-run ball. His peripherals here show he may be a candidate to start 2015 in Appleton.

After LHP David Carver followed Diaz with a needed strong bounceback two-inning stint, LHP Kodi Medeiros allowed just one hit and one walk in the final two innings.

Offensively, the A-Crew whacked four doubles among their 11 hits; 21-year-old catcher Matt Martin of Wake Forest has had a strong season when given the opportunity.
