Mike Carp [Latest -- claimed by TEX]

According to the Boston Globe via MLBTR, 1B/OF Mike Carp has officially requested a trade from the Red Sox: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/07/mike-carp-requests-trade.html

I feel like he is a perfect target for the Brewers: He's left-handed, he can platoon at 1B with Reynolds and can serve as a bench bat and fourth outfielder otherwise, he is a buy-low candidate, and the Brewers have allegedly already been scouting the Red Sox.

Last season Carp hit .296/.362/.523/.885 in 86 games, and his disappointing 2014 season has still been better than Lyle Overbay's (both overall and vs. RHP), and while he is not a great defender in LF over his career he appears adequate at 1B. ZiPS projects him to hit .252/.323/.423 over the rest of the season, which is a huge upgrade over Overbay and/or Schafer, and a change of scenery might just spark him to replicating some of his 2013 form. I see zero reason not to try to trade for Carp ASAP.

Whats he going to take to get?

He's probably going to be non tendered in the off season so I can't imagine it would be much. He's buried on Boston's depth chart so they might be happy with getting anything worthwhile for him.

A change of scenery with Gindl perhaps? Overall though it looks like a pretty solid way to improve, and a nice catch on giving Davis some days off strategically against tough right handers.

From where I'm looking at his numbers on BRef. Carp would be better to play 1b. In the OF, his Defensive numbers tell me he costs the team .2runs per game he's out there. Is his bat for the OF really going to be able to play up to cover that+? Over Davis? OR Schafer? Essentially you're swapping -.2runs offensively per game for Schafer and none defensively, for Carp's -.2runs defensively and none offensively.

I guess he's a better Pinch Hitter option than Schafer but if Gomez went down to injury? We're left with Braun playing CF. Davis/Carp one of them in RF!

So yeah, I'm not buying in to Carp in the OF. 1b over Overbay? man that's tough, Don't know for this year considering Overbay's clutch hits, but Next season, Carp would at least provide a viable 1b option

Carp's got such a small sample size this year that there's no reading into it. He's still taking his walks and getting on base, and historically he's hit for decent power as well. There's nothing to make me believe at age 28 that he suddenly lost that. It's just a small sample. I say go get him.

Not saying Herrera is some great option but he would be the one to play CF in your scenario not Braun.

And just by glancing at Carp's defensive numbers he really struggled in 2011 out in LF but since then has at least gotten better. Still below average. But your right is he really an upgrade over Overbay? I don't think it hurts to find out if you don't have to give up anything of significance. You can ride the hotter stick into the playoffs and nothing better than a little bit of competition at a position of weakness.

Schafer adds no offensive value and with the versatility of Herrera again hes not a world beater by any means, but it really helps he is a utility player. Why not take a flyer on Carp?

Whats he going to take to get?

When I mentioned Carp in another thread a few weeks ago another poster adamantly told me it would cost no less than Nelson. I didn't believe it then and don't now.

I think Carp is the perfect addition. He started off this year terribly like every other Red Sock, but he had an OPS of 872 a year ago, and I could see him finishing this year like that after a trade.

The cost? With Henderson coming back any day we need to clear a spot in the pen, I say over Kintzler. Similar age, experience, and past value considering their roles.

Get this done! If Carp comes over and reverts to last year's form this offense would be unstoppable. We'd have a World Series caliber team.

It's really odd that the Sox rushed Carp off the DL just to let him rot on the bench.

I think this is an cheap trade that makes sense. He is an improvement over Overbay and is 9 years younger. I don't think Boston would expect too much back for him either. I like your suggestion of Kintzler, but I am sure Boston would be looking for a minor leaguer back for him.

Carp at a minimum is going to cost a top 10 prospect in the Brewers system. That is just a bad idea as the Brewers would have to release him after the year as his salary would be way to high. Boston can afford the increase in his salary from arbitration so they are not going to release him.

At a minimum it is going to cost someone like Wagner, Jungmann, or Lopez for Carp. There is no chance the Red Sox give up Carp for someone lik Kintzler.

A reason to acquire Carp is because he'll be so affordable. He makes just $1.4 million this year, and will only be in his 2nd year of arbitration. Coming off a down year he'll make in the ballpark of what we're paying this year's struggling 1B platoon. That's more than affordable.

I don't even know who Wagner is, Jungmann has no upside whatsoever, and Lopez isn't the greatest of prospects, I would have zero issue with trading any of those guys for a nice upgrade like Carp.

I have thought adding Mike Carp was a good idea all the way back to last December. (To the point that my son was disappointed to hear him ask for a trade so that "dad would bring it up again")

My hope now is that Carp is included with a bigger deal between the teams with a bullpen piece or Lester included.

Anyone know how things work with claiming someone that was DFA'd? Do teams with worse records get first shot at him?

Yes, that's exactly it, though I don't remember if it's based on this season or the last.

Boston will first have ten days to try to trade him before he hits waivers, and they've been trying to trade him actively over the past few weeks, so I would think the asking price would be minimal (plus you'd get him immediately rather than waiting ten plus days for the waiver process to sort out). I'm pretty sure at this point of the season, the current year's standings are in play. And I'm pretty sure he must clear the entire AL before the NL teams even get a crack. So he would have to pass by the likes of Detroit, Oakland, etc before even making it to the Cubs for example.
