Final: Palm Beach 13, Brevard County 7

Brevard downed by Cards after two rain delays

By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. - In a game that began roughly an hour after the scheduled start time due to rain and was delayed again in the second inning, the Brevard County Manatees lost to the Palm Beach Cardinals, 13-7 on Friday night at Space Coast Stadium.

Once the game got underway, the Cardinals (23-11 second half, 59-44 overall) jumped on Manatees starting pitcher Jorge Lopez. Palm Beach began the contest with a five-run first inning that included three extra-base hits and a single.

David Popkins delivered the first blow of the onslaught with the lone single of the opening frame. His knock scored Nick Martini with the game's first run and Anthony Garcia followed with an RBI double to give the Cards a 2-0 lead. Mason Katz then capped the banner inning for Palm Beach with a three-run home run to put the visitors up by five runs before the 'Tees could grab their bats.

Brevard (16-14, 52-44) pushed a couple of runs across in the first to soften the blow. Nathan Orf worked his way on with a leadoff walk and Tyrone Taylor brought him home two batters later with an RBI single. Taylor then stole second and moved to third when Michael Reed reached on an error. That set up a run-scoring single by Cameron Garfield to cut the Manatees' deficit to 5-2.

Rain halted play with one out and nobody on in the top of the second, but the Cardinals picked up where they left off when the ballgame resumed. Martini worked a walk and Bruce Caldwell kept the inning alive two batters later with a two-out single.

The next three Cardinals hitters then proceeded to drive in runs. Luke Voit and David Popkins roped back-to-back RBI doubles and Anthony Garcia added a tally with a single. That rally put the Manatees down by seven runs after just 1.5 innings, 9-2.

The home side got one run back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Taylor, but Palm Beach got right back at it with the bats in the third and fourth against the Manatees' bullpen. Martin Viramontes relieved Lopez in the third and Greg Miclat greeted him by slamming a leadoff triple. Miclat later scored on a wild pitch and Voit hit a solo homer in the fourth to give Palm Beach an 11-3 lead.

Brevard County showed some life in the seventh inning and took a shot at coming back. After the Cards scratched across an insurance run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the inning, the 'Tees climbed back within five runs in the bottom half.

Cardinals starter Joe Cuda worked into the seventh with a 12-3 lead, but the 'Tees promptly struck with four straight hits. Orf began the rally by rolling an infield single toward third and Orlando Arcia came up right behind him with a ground rule double.

After Arcia's drive cleared the left field wall on a bounce to put a pair in scoring position, Taylor cleared that wall on a fly. Taylor's three-run homer was his sixth of the season and cut Brevard's deficit to 12-6.

Reed continued the Manatees' rally right after the big fly. He ripped a double and moved to third on a ground out. With only one out in the inning, Roache lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Reed. The four-run inning for Brevard County trimmed Palm Beach's lead to 12-7.

The Cardinals, however, put the game away in the ninth. In the top half, Martini stroked a two-out double against reliever Mark Williams. Martini moved up to third on a wild pitch and Ildemaro Vargas notched the Cardinals' final tally with an RBI single that brought Martini home. Brevard County then went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth against righty reliever Chris Perry.

Cuda (7-7, 6.20 ERA) was not spectacular, but his outing was good enough to earn a victory on this night. The starter gave up seven runs on 11 hits over 6.2 innings. Cuda struck out four and walked one in the winning performance.

Lopez (8-6, 4.29 ERA) took the loss after he gave up a career-high nine runs over the first two innings. The Manatees' starter only lasted those two frames, but tied a season-high with eight hits allowed. Lopez struck out two and walked two in the defeat.

Despite the loss, Taylor turned in one of his best offensive days of the season. Taylor reached a new season-high and tied a career-high with five RBI in a 3-for-5 night that included his first home run since June 27.

Orf was also solid at the dish. He reached base safely in each of his five plate appearances with three singles, a walk and his Florida State League-leading 17th hit-by-pitch of the season. Orf also scored a pair of runs.

Between the delay at the start of the ballgame and the rain interruption in the second inning, the Manatees and Cardinals officially waited through 1:46 minutes of delays. The length of Friday's delays totaled just one our less than the time it took to play the ballgame, as the final time of game clocked in at 2:46.

Brevard County will try to rebound from the loss on Saturday night at Space Coast Stadium, as the 'Tees again host the Cardinals. Austin Ross (7-3, 3.38 ERA) is the scheduled starter for the Manatees against Nick Petree (5-3, 1.93 ERA). First pitch will be at 6:35 p.m.

Brevard County Box Score

The starting and stopping couldn't have helped Jorge Lopez tonight, but it's been an ugly month of July for him. He's 0-3 with an ERA over ten. Nathan Orf reached base in all five of his plate appearances. Tyrone Taylor knocked in five of the Manatees seven runs.

Brevard County Play-By-Play

Taylor topped off his big night with a three-run home run in the seventh.

Brevard County Bottom of the 7th

Nathan Orf singles on a ground ball to third baseman Bruce Caldwell.

Orlando Arcia hits a ground-rule double (22) on a fly ball to left-center field. Nathan Orf to 3rd.

Tyrone Taylor homers (6) on a fly ball to left field. Nathan Orf scores. Orlando Arcia scores.

Michael Reed doubles (18) on a line drive to right fielder David Popkins.

Cameron Garfield grounds out, shortstop Ildemaro Vargas to first baseman Luke Voit. Michael Reed to 3rd.

Victor Roache out on a sacrifice fly to right fielder David Popkins. Michael Reed scores.

Mike Garza singles on a line drive to right fielder David Popkins.

Pitching Change: Danny Miranda replaces Joe Cuda.

Alfredo Rodriguez grounds into a force out, shortstop Ildemaro Vargas to second baseman Greg Miclat. Mike Garza out at 2nd.

Final: Missoula 22, Helena 5

Osprey cruise to 22-5 win

By Dustin Daniel / Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers (13-25) lost their fifth straight on Friday in a 22-5 blowout at the hands of the Missoula Osprey (17-21).

The Osprey scored 18 of their runs in the seventh and eighth innings alone which included two home runs. Fernery Ozuna hit a grand slam for his third hit of the night. He would finish with 7 RBI in the affair.

Justin Williams extended his league-leading hit streak to 20 games after he came up with three hits including an RBI double and three runs scored.

At one point Devin Williams (2-5) would retire 11 consecutive batters before giving up three runs in the fifth. He would strike out four in his five innings on the hill.

The Brewers trailed just 4-2 going to the seventh when the wheels really fell off. Eight runs scored in the seventh and ten runs scored in the eighth. The ten-run eighth is the most runs allowed in an inning all year by the Brewers and they allowed season-highs in runs and hits for the game at 22 for each category.

The Brewers and Osprey will face off in game two of their three-game series Saturday from Kindrick Field. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.

Helena Box Score

SS Francisco Castillo was 2-for-4 with a walk.

CF Brandon Diaz was 2-for-3 with two walks.

Tucker Neuhaus went 1-for-4 on the night with 1 walk.

Sthervin Matos played 3B and went 2-for-5.

So it wasn't a great night as the Helena crew as they allowed 22 runs, 20 of which were earned. Despite the tough overall outing for the Brewers, Devin Williams appeared to take a step in the right direction. His final line was: 5.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 Walk, 4 K's, 0 HR allowed. Devin actually retired 11 straight batters from the middle of the 1st inning through the 4th inning. Entering the 5th inning he had only allowed one run, and it came in the 1st inning from his own throwing error on a pickoff attempt. He did give up three hits in the 5th inning, but a wild pitch and another throwing error on a pickoff attempt didn't help his cause in ultimately giving up 3 runs in the inning.

Captains halt Rattlers winning streak

Lake County edges Wisconsin 2-1

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

EASTLAKE, OH - The Lake County Captains defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 2-1 on Friday night at Classic Park to end Wisconsin's four-game winning streak. Nellie Rodriguez hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth to provide the winning margin.

Wisconsin (54-48 overall, 18-15 second half) grabbed the lead in the top of the first inning. Michael Ratterree knocked in Chris McFarland from third base with a grounder to short for a 1-0 lead.

The Captains (43-60, 16-17) tied the game in the bottom of the third. Grant Fink singled to start the inning. A fly ball to left off the bat of Jorge Martinez was misplayed for an error that put runners on second and third with no outs. Wisconsin starting pitcher Zach Quintana got the first two outs of the inning on grounders to third, but threw a wild pitch with Clint Frazier at the plate to allow Fink to score the tying run.

Rodriguez put the Captains in front with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth. Rodriguez hit his seventeenth home run of the season to give Lake County their first lead of the three game series.

Captains starting pitcher Mitch Brown struck out eight over 6-1/3 innings, walked two, hit one, and held Wisconsin to a single run. Clint Coulter was the first Wisconsin batter to face Lake County reliever Jimmy Stokes and he lined a double to left-center. Stokes got the next two batters on grounders to maintain the one-run lead.

Chris Razo and Tristan Archer each worked two scoreless innings out of the Wisconsin bullpen to keep the deficit at one run.

McFarland, who extended his hitting streak to nine games with his first inning single, gave the Rattlers a chance in the ninth. The Wisconsin second baseman singled to lead off the frame against Lake County closer Trevor Frank. David Denson would single with one out to send McFarland around to third base with the tying run. But, Frank would strikeout the next two batters to finish off the Rattlers.

Lake County snapped an eight-game losing streak with their victory.

The Timber Rattlers continue their road trip on Saturday night with game one of a series at Parkview Field in Fort Wayne, Indiana against the Fort Wayne TinCaps. Barrett Astin (6-4, 4.42) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Jeffery Enloe (2-3, 2.19) has been named as the starting pitcher for the TinCaps. Game time is 6:05pm CDT. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 5:45pm.

HOME RUN:

LC:

Nellie Rodriguez (17th, 0 on in 4th inning off Zach Quintana, 1 out)

WP: Mitch Brown (3-8)

LP: Zach Quintana (3-5)

TIME: 2:27

ATTN: 7,035

Wisconsin Boxscore

Zach Quintana appears to be making some incremental improvements with his control, he was so bad early in the season it's going to take time for that ERA to come down but he's been alternating good/bad starts for a while now.

Chris McFarland's 2-4 day was the only multi-hit game. David Denson has hit safely in 7 of his last 10 games but he only has 1 multi-hit game in that stretch so his AVE is just .273 over said span.

Wisconsin Recap

This proved big...

Wisconsin Top of the 4th

  • Christopher McFarland grounds out, catcher Eric Haase to first baseman Nellie Rodriguez.
    Michael Ratterree walks.
David Denson walks. Michael Ratterree to 2nd.
With Clint Coulter batting, wild pitch by Mitch Brown, Michael Ratterree to 3rd. David Denson to 2nd.
Clint Coulter called out on strikes.
    Rafael Neda strikes out swinging.

Nashville's Jungmann Pitches Six Shutout Innings

Nashville Sounds

(MIKE STRASINGER )

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Logging his best start in nearly a month, Nashville starter Taylor Jungmann threw six strong innings to propel the first place Sounds (57-50) to a 2-0 win over the Oklahoma City RedHawks (53-55) at Greer Stadium on Friday night in front of 8,021 fans.

The shutout victory gives Nashville 10 for the year, which is the most in the PCL, and is the team's first time holding the opposition scoreless since blanking Round Rock on July 4.

Jungmann (5-5), ranked as the No. 8 prospect in the Milwaukee Brewers' system by Baseball America, twirled six scoreless innings while allowing just five hits and no walks to go along with four strikeouts. This outing was his best since his last victory, when he threw seven shutout innings against New Orleans at Greer on June 28.

Nashville scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the third on a Kevin Mattison RBI double and a clutch, two-out single from Jason Rogers.

Mattison went 2-for-3 on the evening, continuing his impressive hot streak where he has recorded multi-hit games in seven of his last 11 starts, hitting .436 during that span. Rogers finished the game 1-for-4, and now has hits in 10 of his last 13 starts while driving in a run in eight of his last 11 games.

Sounds reliever Dustin Molleken was dominant out of the bullpen behind Jungmann, pitching 1.2 scoreless innings and striking out four to complete his third consecutive scoreless appearance. Brent Leach followed to get out of the eighth before Rob Wooten retired the RedHawks in order in the ninth to record his sixth save.

The Sounds and RedHawks continue their series on Friday, when Nashville RHP Donovan Hand (1-6, 5.17) will face off against Oklahoma City LHP Rudy Owens (5-4, 4.91) at 6:35 p.m. Fans can listen to the action live on 102.5 The GAME.

Nashville Boxscore

As noted above Taylor Jungmann with one of his better AAA efforts shining bright in an otherwise dismal pitching day for the minor league teams.

With just 11 hits and 4 walks between the teams this game was playing in a brisk 2:38.

Final: @Jackson 8, Huntsville 3

Generals Knock Out Stars Early

Steve Jarnicki, Huntsville Stars

Jackson, TN - The Jackson Generals delivered the knockout blow early to the Huntsville Stars Friday night. The Generals scored all eight of their runs in the first two innings leading them to an 8-3 win over the Huntsville Stars at The Ballpark At Jackson. The Stars have lost four straight games.

All eight runs the Generals scored came against Huntsville starter Brent Suter (9-8) who took the loss.

In the bottom of the first inning, Dan Paolini grounded a two-out RBI single into center giving the Generals a 1-0 lead.

The Generals blew the game wide open in the bottom of the second when they sent eleven batters to the plate. Suter retired the first batter, but things went south after that.

Mike Dowd walked. Brock Hebert reached on an infield single. Leon Landry scored Dowd on a single to center making it 2-0 Generals.

Ketel Marte then followed with a two-run double to the gap in left center making it 4-0. D.J. Peterson followed with an RBI double of his own to push the lead to 5-0.

The Generals weren't finished just yet. Dario Pizzano doubled over CF Josh Fellhauer's head scoring two more runs making it 7-0.

Suter left the game after pitching just 1.2 innings. Tommy Toledo entered out of the bullpen and gave up an RBI double to Patrick Brady making it 8-0 Jackson.

Suter was charged with allowing all eight runs on eight hits.

With the Stars trailing 8-0, they then scored all three of their runs in the top of the third inning with two outs against Jackson starter Tyler Pike.

With the bases loaded, Nick Ramirez stroked a two-run single into right field scoring Yadiel Rivera and Nick Shaw, cutting the lead to 8-2.

The next batter, Hector Gimenez, produced an RBI single scoring Hainley Statia which made it 8-3 Jackson.

Pike did not stick around long enough to earn the win as he only pitched three innings allowing six hits on three runs.

Cam Hobson (6-8) pitched four scoreless innings out of the Generals bullpen and held the Stars to just two hits. Hobson earned the win for Jackson.

Shaw led the Stars offense with a 3-5 performance.

The quartet out of the Stars bullpen of Tommy Toledo, Manny Barreda, Greg Holle and Tim Dillard combined for 6.1 scoreless innings.

The Stars (16-19, 62-43) return to Huntsville to begin a ten-game homestand Saturday with the first of five games against the Chattanooga Lookouts, the Double-A Affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers. RHP Drew Gagnon (7-4, 3.20) will be the starting pitcher for the Stars. Chattanooga will have RHP Andres Santiago (2-6, 4.79) on the mound. The game can be heard starting at 6:15 pm CDT on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM and wtkiradio.com.

Huntsville Box Score

Kudos, bullpen.

Nick Shaw a nice night. When was the last time an organizational left fielder on July 25th had a .319 SLG? In his 518th pro game, Shaw sees the outfield for the first time.

Two big innings lead to Osprey runaway

by Amber Kuehn, Helena Independent Record

With a force-out at second base, the first half of the Pioneer League season came to a close Friday night.

The Helena Brewers are no doubt happy to bid it adieu.

The Missoula Osprey combined for 18 hits in the seventh and eighth innings and went on to win a wild one at Kindrick Legion Field, 22-5. The loss — the Brewers’ fifth straight — dropped Helena to 13-25.

What began as a pitcher’s duel ended in a train wreck for the Brewers. The game was within reach for the hosts after five innings, when Helena trailed just 4-2. But the wheels came off with Brandon Woodruff on the bump in the seventh, when Missoula recorded four straight hits and batted around. Eight runs came in, and little did the 930 fans in attendance know, the Osprey were just getting started.

Missoula second baseman Fernery Ozuna hammered a grand slam to the net in right field in the eighth inning to drive the dagger even deeper. It was just the first time reliever Ryan Deeter had given up an earned run in his professional career. But it was that kind of night for the Brewers, who allowed season highs in runs and hits. Ten runs scored in the eighth frame alone.

Ozuna finished a double shy of the cycle, left fielder Justin Williams ran his hit streak to a league-leading 20 games, and everything went Missoula’s way in the first-half finale. Every player in the Osprey lineup — even pinch hitter Bennie Robinson, the team’s newest addition — recorded a hit.

Helena third baseman Sthervin Matos was 2 for 5 with an RBI, catcher Jack Cleary had a two-run double, and Francisco Castillo and Brandon Diaz each had two hits. But the Brewers’ 7-9 batters went without a hit, and Helena stranded a season-high 13 base runners. Missoula, meanwhile, was an incredible 16 for 26 with runners in scoring position.

Osprey starter Brad Keller picked up his first win of the season, going five innings and allowing just two runs on four hits. Helena starter Devin Williams was tagged with the loss, despite a stretch where he retired 11 in a row. Milwaukee’s highest-round pick a year ago, he is now 2-5 this season for Helena.

It was the biggest loss of the season for the local team, who will eagerly wipe the slate clean today when the second half of the season gets started.

Jorge Ortega will get the nod for Helena while Carlos Hernandez makes the start for Missoula. First pitch is 7:05 PM (8:05 Central).

NOTES: The Brewers are now 0-8 when recording at least three errors in a game. ... The Great Falls Voyagers closed out the first half with a 6-3 loss to Billings, but the Voyagers (23-15) are the first-half North Division champions, clinching a postseason berth. ... Missoula (17-21) finished the first half tied for second place with the Mustangs, while Helena finished in the cellar.

Jungmann with an excellent game. Only 4 Ks but no BBs, all five of the hits given up were singles with three of the five being ground ball singles plus a 7:1 GO:FO. Only 79 pitches through 6 innings.
