Not even 21 years old yet, but what a miserable lost year for catcher Dustin Houle, the youngster from up north had been trying to overcome fractures on his hand since spring, and now he tweets that he'll need to undergo Tommy John surgery. A super strong defender, Houle was looking to emerge offensively as well in 2014.

Best wishes, see you in the spring, sir...

Today Dustin tweets this post-surgery photo and thought.

Miss the Power 50?

Thank you Brad and the Miller Park Prospects Staff for this sweet Top 40.

You need a catchier name, though ;).

Very well done Brad (and staff)! The list certainly appears considerably deeper than those from the pre-season. A lot of young guys on that list that I am looking forward to watch develop.

As far as the name goes, maybe a BF.net naming contest? My submissions are "Miller Park Future Forty" or "Brewers Back Forty". Sorry if those are a lame start. :)

Not just “at Night” anymore.

"Tonight’s interview is with former and current Sound Jim Henderson, who pitched for the Sounds in ’11 and ’12 and is back in Nashville on major league rehab assignment from the Brewers. Henderson has been on the disabled list since May 2 with right shoulder issues. He discusses the rehab process and then recalls some memories of 2012-13, including his first-ever major league call-up — almost two years ago to the day — after 10 years in the minors, his emotions in his first few outings with the Brewers that summer, and his 28-save season a year ago."

Stars Fall in Jackson

Steve Jarnicki, Huntsville Stars

The Jackson Generals jumped all over Huntsville starter Jacob Barnes (2-5) in the first inning leading them to a 5-2 win over the Stars Tuesday night at The Ballpark At Jackson.

In the bottom of the first inning D.J Peterson singled into left field scoring Ketel Marte making it 1-0 Jackson.

Two batters later Pat Kivlehan lined a two-run triple to the alley in right center making it 3-0.

Dario Pizzan capped off the scoring in the first with a sacrifice fly giving the Generals a 4-0 lead.

Jackson extended their lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the second inning. Peterson provided a sacrifice fly.

Barnes, who took the loss, pitched 5.1 innings allowing five runs on eight hits. He struck out seven. Barnes gave up seven of of his eight hits in the first two innings before settling down.

The Stars only offense came in the top of the fifth. Hainley Statia drove a two-run home run over the twenty foot wall in left field. The home run was Statia’s third of the year. It was the only mistake Jackson starter Tyler Olson (5-5) made in the game.

Olson pitched six innings and allowed two runs on eight hits.

Mayckol Guaipe recorded his 7th save of the year in the top of the ninth as he struck out Josh Fellhauer to end the game.

The Stars (16-16, 62-40) and the Generals (13-18, 44-56) are tied at 1-1 in their five-game series. Game three will be Wednesday night. RHP Eric Marzec (1-2, 3.89) will start for Huntsville. Jackson will send RHP Stephen Landizuri (4-2, 3.38) to the hill. The game can be heard starting at 6:50 pm CDT on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM and wtkiradio.com.

Huntsville Box Score

RHP Jacob Barnes did well later on, as he ended up fanning seven and walking none. RHP Kevin Shackelford didn't mope after losing his 40-man roster spot, as he stranded two runners for Barnes and pitched an additional scoreless inning.

SS Yadiel Rivera has only walked three times in 79 Double-A AB's, but his 2-for-4 night has him up to .291 now.

Sounds Strike Early in 7-5 Win

Nashville Returns to First Place With Victory

Nashville Sounds

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/4/8/2/85814482/cuts/Jason_Rogers_627_3_z19d4h17_r7bqhtsh.jpg

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Behind an early offensive outburst and a solid start from Michael Blazek, the Nashville Sounds (54-50) picked up a 7-5 win over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (44-58) at Greer Stadium on Tuesday night. The victory, coupled with a 1-0 New Orleans loss in Iowa, moved the Sounds back into first place in the American Conference Southern Division.

Nashville took a 3-0 advantage off of Sky Sox starter Brian Burres (1-3) in the top of the first thanks to a string of RBI singles by Jason Rogers, Matt Clark and Hector Gomez. The opening strike and win improves the Sounds' record when scoring first at Greer Stadium to 26-2.

Rogers went 2-for-3 in the contest, giving him hits in nine of his last 12 starts with nine RBIs in that span. Gomez's impressive July continued as well, as his 1-for-3 performance, which also included a sacrifice fly in the third inning, gives him hits in 16 of 19 games played this month.

Sounds starter Michael Blazek (1-4) dealt four scoreless innings, striking out five while allowing just three hits. He was followed by Jose De La Torre, who threw two innings of scoreless relief to pick up his second win of the year.

Nashville added an insurance run in the top of the seventh after Sean Halton scored Eugenio Velez on a fielder's choice.

It took until the top of the eighth for the Sky Sox to get on the board, as they cut Nashville's lead to 5-2 after a Matt McBride RBI single and an error by Gomez off of Sounds reliever Alfredo Figaro. Brent Leach and Rob Wooten, however, combined to get out of the inning with the Sounds still holding a comfortable margin.

Matt Pagnozzi delivered a crushing blow in the bottom of the eighth when he hit a two-run home run over the left field wall, his 10th of the season.

Colorado Springs did not go down without a fight, scoring three runs off of Wooten in the top of the ninth and putting the winning run on base before Dustin Molleken came in to get the final out and pick up his third save of the year

The series between the Sounds and Sky Sox rolls along with the next game scheduled for Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Sounds RHP Ariel Pena (6-6, 4.62) will take to the bump opposite Sky Sox RHP Mike McClendon (2-1, 3.30).

Nashville Boxscore

Yes that Mike McClendon, our old friend. Apparently this is former Brewer pitcher week for the Sounds... where's Claudio Vargas when you need him? Maybe his Mexican league team will give him up to complete a trifecta...

Final: Brevard County 6, Fort Myers 7

Brevard lets two leads slip, loses in 12

By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees

Brevard County starting pitcher Tyler Wagner pitched seven shutout innings against the Fort Myers Miracle on Tuesday night at Hammond Stadium to improve his Florida State League best ERA to 1.61. The Manatees lost in 12 innings, however, 7-6. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees had the game in hand twice, but ended up losing in 12 innings to the Fort Myers Miracle on Tuesday night at Hammond Stadium, 7-6.

Heading into the bottom of the eighth, Brevard County (15-12 second half, 51-42 overall) held a 4-0 lead, thanks to seven shutout innings by Tyler Wagner. After Wagner exited, however, Fort Myers (21-9, 62-37) pounced.

Tyler Grimes led off the inning with a double off of reliever Martin Viramontes. With two outs, Jorge Polanco slammed a double of his own to cut the Manatees' lead to 4-1.

Fort Myers threatened to add more, but Mark Williams came in to stop the bleeding. After he walked Dalton Hicks to load the bases, Williams induced an inning-ending double play to preserve the three-run advantage.

In the ninth, however, the Miracle got to Williams. After a leadoff walk to Mike Gonzales and a one-out free pass to Niko Goodrum, Grimes ripped an RBI double to cut the Miracle's deficit to two runs.

Williams exited after the double and Stephen Peterson entered in an attempt to close out the game. Aderling Mejia, however, cut further into Brevard's lead with an RBI ground out that scored Goodrum and pulled Fort Myers within one run. Grimes moved up to third on the ground out and Peterson walked Polanco to bring Travis Harrison to the plate. Harrison smoked a single up the middle to score Grimes and tie the game.

The ballgame went to extra innings and the 'Tees got what, at the time, looked like a game-deciding hit. After Peterson left the winning run on third in the bottom of the 10th, Brevard rallied with two outs in the top of the 11th.

Alfredo Rodriguez doubled off of reliever Madison Boer and Greg Hopkins worked a walk. Brandon Macias came up with the outfielders playing in to cut off the run at the plate, but the number nine hitter drove a ball over the head of Grimes in center. Rodriguez and Hopkins both scored to give the Manatees a 6-4 lead. Macias, however, was thrown out on a 9-4-5 relay, as he tried to stretch his double into a triple.

For the second time in the game, Brevard had a chance to beat Fort Myers. Left-hander Trevor Seidenberger came in to pitch the bottom of the 11th, but promptly gave up a walk to Mejia. After Seidenberger struck out Polanco, Harrison hit a broken-bat grounder to second and Mejia made a cerebral baserunning play that kept the ballgame alive.

Nathan Orf fielded Harrison's grounder at second and went to tag Mejia. The runner, however, stopped and backpedalled toward first. Orf eventually tagged Mejia, but had no time to complete the double play at first, as Harrison reached safely. If the 'Tees had turned two there, the ballgame would have been over.

Mejia's baserunning allowed Hicks to come to the plate as the tying run with two outs in the 11th. The left-handed hitter came through with a towering, two-run home run over the right field wall that tied the game again, 6-6.

Fort Myers finally put the Manatees away in the 12th. Seidenberger gave up a leadoff double to Gonzales and Stuart Turner sacrificed the winning run over to third base with a bunt. The Manatees brought the infield in for Goodrum, but Seidenberger worked around the switch-hitter and eventually put him on with a walk.

With runners on the corners and one out, Fort Myers called on a surprise pinch runner. Sunday's starting pitcher, Tim Shibuya, entered the game to pinch run for Gonzales with Grimes coming to the plate. After Goodrum moved to second on defensive indifference, Grimes took the ballgame into his own hands.

The 'Tees still had the infield in and Grimes pulled a line drive. Macias dove, but the ball went past his outstretched glove and into left field. Shibuya came home with the game-winning run and the 'Tees fell for the fourth time in a row.

Left-hander Steven Gruver picked up the win after pitching a scoreless top of the 12th. Gruver (2-5, 3.05 ERA) allowed one hit and walked the batter, but left the potential go-ahead run on second base to preserve the tie score.

Seidenberger took his first Florida State League loss. The lefty allowed three runs, the two-run homer by Hicks that tied the game and the walk-off single by Grimes, over 1.1 innings. Seidenberger (0-1) surrendered three hits, walked two men and struck out a pair.

Lost in the heartbreaking defeat was the tremendous pitching performance of Wagner. Brevard County's starter pitched seven scoreless innings and only allowed four hits. Wagner struck out four and walked two. He also maintained the best ERA in the FSL at 1.61.

Since June 9, the starter has allowed just two runs over 41.1 innings for a remarkable 0.44 ERA. Wagner, however, saw his five-start winning streak snapped after the 'Tees gave up the lead in the ninth.

Brevard County will try to salvage a game from the Miracle on Wednesday morning. The 'Tees have lost all six meetings against Fort Myers and will get one more shot at the first-half south division champs with an 11:35 a.m. first pitch. Hobbs Johnson (9-6, 2.80 ERA) will get the ball for Brevard against Brett Lee (6-2, 1.85 ERA).

Well at least Harrison is holding his own, I was so thrilled with that pick, I had Pitt taking him in the mock draft...

I would rather the score in Maryvale wasn't 20-3 right now for the bad guys, but Kodi Medeiros and Jake Gatewood have plenty of time to make adjustments and get their feet under them. Neither player's stat line is pretty which is why I didn't link them.

Final: Grand Junction 8, Helena 7

Tying run left at second, Brewers fall 8-7

By Dustin Daniel / Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers (13-22) came up just short on Tuesday, losing 8-7 to the Grand Junction Rockies (20-15).

For the second time in their four-game series with the Rockies, the Brewers stranded the tying run in scoring position in the ninth.

Grand Junction took an early 3-0 lead with runs in the first and second off Cy Sneed. Wes Rogers led off the game with a single and later scored on an RBI single from Forrest Wall. Rogers was 2-for-4 in his second game of professional baseball while Wall went 4-for-5 on the night.

Helena tied it up in the third when Sthervin Matos hit a 3-RBI double to clear the bases. Matos now has 18 RBI in 12 games in the Pioneer League.

The Brewers took a 4-3 lead in the fourth when Gregory Munoz hit an RBI single up the middle to score Edgardo Rivera from second.

Play would be suspended in the top of the fifth due to lightning. The Brewers had a 4-3 lead at the time and were just two outs from taking home the win.

Luis Ortega (2-4) replaced Sneed after the delay, giving up five runs on six hits in just a third of an inning of work. That would end Grand Junction's scoring for the night, but it would be enough.

After dropping the lead down to one, the Brewers made a late rally in the ninth. Brandon Diaz and Tucker Neuhaus were both hit by pitches to put two men aboard with one away. Gavin Glanz then entered the ball game and threw one pitch to end it. Sthervin Matos grounded into a 5-4-3 double play to give the Rockies their 20th victory of the year.

The Brewers now head North to take on the Great Falls Voyagers in a two-game series. First pitch from Centene Stadium on Wednesday is set for 7:00 p.m.

Helena Box Score

Brandon Diaz went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk. Diaz also added two stolen bases, both of 3B.

Tucker Neuhaus was 1-for-3 as well.

Sthervin Matos was 1-for-5 with a double and three RBI.

Mitch Meyer was 2-for-4 with a double and a triple.

Cy Sneed's final line was 4.1 IP, 8 hits, 3 earned runs, 1 walk, and 1 strikeout

Brewers up early, fall late to Rockies

By Amber Kuehn / Helena Independent Record

Helena’s Gregory Munoz waits for a relay from Sthervin Matos, giving the Brewers an out at second base Tuesday at Kindrick Legion Field.

The lightning struck first and the thunder followed Tuesday at Kindrick Legion Field.

After the players were called off the field, a light rain began to fall.

Fifty-two minutes later, a different sort of storm descended on the Helena Brewers, this one in the form of the visiting Grand Junction Rockies. The Rockies exploded for five runs in the sixth inning following the weather delay and beat the Brewers 8-7 after thwarting a late comeback attempt by the hosts.

“We once again had that one big inning where we had a letdown,” a disappointed Helena manager Tony Diggs said. “We’ve got to figure out a way to not let those big innings happen.”

Helena trailed 3-0 early before Sthervin Matos struck a game-tying, bases-clearing double in the third. The Brewers took the lead in the fourth on an RBI single by Gregory Munoz.

Luis Ortega came in to pitch for Helena after the long delay and retired the first three he faced. But the Rockies got to the reliever in the sixth, getting three straight hits — a single, a two-run homer by Max George, and another single — before the Brewers recorded a single out. When all was said and done, it was 8-4 Grand Junction.

But the Brewers weren’t done yet.

Against Rockies reliever Alex Rodriguez, Francisco Castillo hit a one-out double and came home on a balk call to make it 8-5. Brandon Diaz then reached on a strikeout passed ball, stole third and scored on a wild pitch to trim the lead to 8-6. An RBI triple by Mitch Meyer, who extended his hitting streak to 12 games, made it 8-7, giving new hope to the hometown team and bringing life to the small crowd that rode out the storm.

Grand Junction didn’t find home plate the rest of the night against Helena reliever Brandon Moore, who retired all nine batters he faced — including two by back-to-back strikeouts on minimum pitches. He was effective and his defense was athletic, with center fielder Brandon Diaz making several highlight-reel plays Tuesday evening.

“He came in and did exactly what’s expected of a guy of his caliber,” Diggs said of Moore. “He mixed his pitches well and put up zeros, and had good defense behind him.”

But despite putting the go-ahead run on base in the ninth frame, Helena couldn’t muster a win. Yoely Bello hit back-to-back batters to bring the Brewers’ biggest bat to the plate with only one out, but Sthervin Matos — who leads the team with a .413 average — grounded into a 5-4-3 double play.

“They showed me great heart and good effort in playing through tonight,” Diggs said.

Grand Junction won the season series 5-2. Forrest Wall led the Rockies at the plate, going 4 for 5 Tuesday with a pair of RBIs. Reliever Taylor Black got the win on the mound to improve to 3-0 on the year, while Ortega (2-4) was charged with the loss.

Helena heads to Great Falls next for a two-game set before returning home to host Missoula for three.

NOTES: Chad Thompson was promoted from Helena to the low-A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers of the Midwest League on Tuesday morning. The right-handed pitcher spent 2012 with the Rattlers prior to being sidelined for the 2013 season due to shoulder surgery. Currently, no pitcher has been called up from the Arizona League to take his spot in the rotation. ... ...Orem clinched the fist half Southern Division title and a playoff berth with a win over Missoula.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Final: AZL Padres 20, @AZL Brewers 3

Maryvale Box Score

LHP Kodi Medeiros' day was detailed earlier.

So a Padres squad that was 6-18 coming into the game obviously dominated the A-Crew here. Included in the carnage were five Padre innings of at least three runs, so only RHP Alex Lavandero (one scoreless inning) and RHP Taylor Stark (one out stranding two baserunners for an again wild RHP Andy Hillis) were spared. 22-year-old Stark (30th round) has yet to allow an earned run in his limited action.

The Maryvale Men have been outscored this season 145-117, but are .500 overall.
