Final: Helena 4, Grand Junction 2

Brewers even series with 4-2 win

By Dustin Daniel / Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers (13-20) scored two late runs to top the Grand Junction Rockies (18-15) 4-2 and even their series record at a game apiece.

The Brewers pitching staff came up with one of their top outings this season, shutting out the Rockies through the first seven innings. Brandon Woodruff had his best start of the year, pitching five innings of shutout baseball, striking out two and giving up five hits.

The 8th overall pick in the 2014 draft, Kyle Freeland, was perfect through his first 10 hitters for the Rockies before Brandon Diaz came up with an infield single in the fourth. Freeland pitched four innings, giving up two hits and striking out three.

Helena broke the scoring open with two runs in the fifth off reliever Logan Norris. Mitch Meyer, Luis Aviles and Edgardo Rivera came up with three consecutive two-out hits in the frame to score two runs off the righty.

The Rockies would tie it up in the eighth with two runs off reliever Devin Williams. Henry Garcia ripped an RBI single to center to score Omar Carrizales and later scored on a wild pitch.

Helena immediately responded with two more runs in the bottom of the eighth. Tucker Neuhaus put a double down the left field line to advance Brandon Diaz to third and put two runners in scoring position with no outs. Natanael Mejia came up with an RBI single to score Diaz and Eric Williams laid a sacrifice bunt down the first base line to bring in Neuhaus.

Devin Williams closed out the ninth, striking out Carrizales to end the game.

The Brewers and Rockies will go at it on Monday night in game three of their four-game series from Kindrick Field. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.

Helena Box Score

Helena managed eight hits on the day, but only two hits came off 2014 first rounder, LHP Kyle Freeland (back-to-back singles by Brandon Diaz and Tucker Neuhaus in the 4th inning).

CF Brandon Diaz was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.

3B Tucker Neuhaus was 2-for-4 with the lone extra base hit for the Brewers, a double in the 8th inning.

It was just a two man pitching show for Helena, as they held the Grand Junction to just two runs on nine hits.

Brandon Woodruff's final line was 5.0 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 1 walk, and 2 strikeouts.

Over 4.0 IP Devin Williams allowed 4 H and 2 ER. He did issue 3 walks while striking out 5. He also had a wild pitch that allowed a run to score.

Final: Brevard County 4, Lakeland 7

Brevard falls in series opener at Fort Myers, 7-4

By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees

http://brevardcounty.manatees.milb.com/assets/images/9/0/0/73877900/cuts/Michael_Reed_FredBenavidez_640x360_nkv6hoep_hd5yp0qi.jpg

Brevard County outfielder Michael Reed was named the Florida State League Player of the Week for the period of April 28-May 4. In six games that week, he hit .571 (12-for-21) with two home runs, five runs batted in, scored nine runs and had a .700 on-base percentage. (Fred Benavidez)

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Tim Shibuya pitched a gem and Niko Goodrum delivered late at the dish to drive the Fort Myers Miracle past the Brevard County Manatees, 7-4 on Sunday at Hammond Stadium.

Typically a ground ball pitcher, Shibuya (7-3, 3.13 ERA) was true to form. He held the Manatees (15-10 second half, 51-40 overall) to just one run over seven innings with the help of four double plays. The starter also struck out five men, including the first four men he faced, allowed seven hits and walked one.

Shibuya's shot at a victory was in jeopardy late, but his shortstop and nine-hitter picked him up. With Fort Myers (19-9, 60-37) clinging to a 3-1 edge in the sixth, Goodrum came up with two outs and two on.

Manatees starter Jorge Lopez had his pitch-count running up over 100 in his first game back since pitching in the MLB All-Star Futures Game on Sunday and Goodrum was likely the last man he would face. Goodrum had two strikes against him, but turned on a pitch from Lopez (8-5, 3.54 ERA) and drilled a high fly ball over the right field wall. The home run ended the night for Lopez and pushed the Miracle's lead to 6-1.

The Manatees nearly stormed back again in the eighth when Michael Reed smashed a three-run home run over the left field wall against reliever B.J. Hermsen that made the score 6-4, Fort Myers. The next half-inning, however, Goodrum was there again to bail the Miracle out. With Stuart Turner on first, he ripped a single to right that scored the runner. That knock gave Fort Myers a 7-4 lead and helped secure the win for Shibuya.

Before Goodrum's late-game surge, Fort Myers started early with the bats. Adam Brett Walker opened the scoring when he smoked a two run double down the left field line in the third. Manatees left fielder Victor Roache had trouble with the ball and threw wild to the plate, which allowed Walker to move to third base. Mike Gonzales then pushed the Miracle's lead to 3-0 with an RBI single to right.

The 'Tees responded in the fourth. Nathan Orf smacked a double to lead things off and Reed singled to put runners on the corners with nobody out. After Shibuya induced a fly out, Mike Garza put Brevard on the board with a single to right that scored Orf.

The Manatees had a big chance to cut further into the lead in the fourth, but could not capitalize. With runners on first and second, Roache hit a ground ball back to the mound. Shibuya fielded the ball and turned to throw to first base. Both Miracle middle infielders, Goodrum and Jorge Polanco, arrived at the bag and Shibuya's throw kicked off Goodrum's glove.

Goodrum was charged with the error and the 'Tees had the bases loaded for Alfredo Rodriguez. Shibuya remained composed, though, and produced another ground ball to the rubber. The pitcher threw home for the first out and Turner threw to first to complete the inning-ending double play. It was Shibuya's second double play of the game, after he had manufactured one in the third, and it kept Fort Myers ahead, 3-1.

Brevard County had another shot at Shibuya in the top of the sixth, but the starter's third double play suppressed that threat. The Manatees had Orf on first following a leadoff single and Reed hit a ground ball to third. Aderling Mejia threw to Polanco to force out Orf, but the runner made a hard slide into the bag and Polanco's throw to first went wild. The ball bounced out of play and Reed moved up to second.

After Taylor grounded a single, the Manatees had runners on the corners with one out. Garza came to the plate with the tying runs on, but hit into 4-3 twin-killing to get the Miracle out of the jam.

The seventh inning brought another Manatees rally and yet another Shibuya double play. Roache ripped a double to start the frame and Rodriguez walked to put a pair on. Garrett Cooper, however, rolled a ground ball to shortstop and Goodrum turned two to end the inning and complete Shibuya's outing with the starter's fourth and final double play.

Right-hander Todd Van Steensel came in for the ninth and completed the win to record his first Florida State League save. Van Steensel issued a one-out walk, but was able to seal the victory by inducing a fly out to center and a ground out to second to end the ballgame.

Lopez took the loss for Brevard County. He pitched 5.2 innings and allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits. The starter struck out three and walked three in the losing effort.

Orf was the hottest-hitting Manatee on the evening. He led Brevard with three hits in five trips to the plate. The second baseman singled twice, doubled and scored a pair of runs. Reed was the only other Manatee with multiple hits, as he went 2-for-4 with the three-run homer in the eighth and a single.

Sunday's game marked the return to the Manatees lineup for Cooper. The first baseman had been transferred to Class-A Wisconsin in June and then went to the Rookie Arizona League for a spell before being sent back to Brevard County on Friday. Cooper went 1-for-4 in his first game back.

The Manatees are 0-4 against Fort Myers, but get another crack at the Miracle on Monday night. First pitch at Hammond Stadium is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Austin Ross (7-2, 3.12 ERA) is the probable starter for Brevard County against lefty Matt Tomshaw (8-2, 2.88 ERA).

Brevard County Box Score

Perhaps I missed it, but I'm curious as to what the status of Nicky Delmonico is. He's no longer listed on the BC roster and his milb.com player page shows him on the temporary inactive list. He hadn't played in a game for the Manatees since July 7th, and you'd think if it was injury related he'd just go on the DL. Given his late start to the season for personal reasons, hopefully everything turns out alright for the 22-year-old Delmonico. Orlando Arcia was out of the lineup once again today as well. On a more positive note, it was nice to see Michael Reed muscle up for a big three run homer and Nathan Orf picked up a pair of singles and a double in five at bats.

Brevard County Play-By-Play

Reed's eighth inning blast

Brevard County Top of the 8th

Pitching Change: B. J. Hermsen replaces Tim Shibuya.

Brandon Macias singles on a ground ball to left fielder Travis Harrison.

Nathan Orf singles on a fly ball to left fielder Travis Harrison. Brandon Macias to 2nd.

Michael Reed homers (3) on a fly ball to left center field. Brandon Macias scores. Nathan Orf scores.

Tyrone Taylor flies out to center fielder Max Kepler.

Mike Garza grounds out, shortstop Niko Goodrum to first baseman Dalton Hicks.

Victor Roache walks.

Alfredo Rodriguez flies out to right fielder Adam Walker.

NL All-Stars 9, AL All-Stars 7

Joantgel Segovia started in right field for the National League and went 0-for-2. Yerald Martinez entered the game later as a pinch-hitter and stayed in the game to play left field. He went 0-for-1 with a sacrifice and scored a run.

There's a big eight page photo gallery posted up on dominicansummerleague.com that features some nice shots of Martinez (page 2) and Segovia (page 6) as well as a couple of manager Jose Pena (page 2).

Wisconsin stops skid with 3-0 win over Dayton

Terry and Astin combine on 4-hit shutout

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/8/1/4/85470814/cuts/Clint_Terry_July_20_v58ypafi_p65mhgn4.jpg

Clint Terry pitched six shutout innings in Wisconsin's 3-0 win over Dayton on Sunday afternoon.

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Clint Terry and Barrett Astin gave the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers just what they needed to snap a three-game losing streak. The Timber Rattlers pitching tandem combined on a four-hit shutout in a 3-0 victory over the Dayton Dragons Sunday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

Chris McFarland put the Timber Rattlers (51-47 overall, 15-14 second half) into the lead. McFarland singled up the middle with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the third inning. The hit drove in Jose Pena and Steve Halcomb for a 2-0 advantage.

Michael Ratterree lined a solo homer just inside the left field foul pole with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning to extend Wisconsin's lead to 3-0. The home run gave Ratterree the team lead in homers over Clint Coulter, who has 16. Ratterree is second in the Midwest League in homers behind South Bend's Daniel Palka, who has 18.

That was all the Wisconsin pitchers needed.

Terry allowed three hits, walked two and struck out five over his six scoreless innings. That put him in line for his third win of the season.

Astin took over in the top of the seventh and retired the first six batters he faced.

Dayton (50-47, 14-15) made it interesting in the top of the ninth against Astin. Robert Ramirez was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Phillip Ervin followed with a single to bring the tying run to the plate. Then, Astin fell behind Avain Rachal 3-1, but closed the game and earned his third save of the season by getting Rachal to ground into a 6-4-3 double play and Joe Hudson to ground out to third.

The shutout was the fifth of the season for the Timber Rattlers.

The final game of the homestand is Monday afternoon. Taylor Williams (7-1, 2.72) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Dayton will counter with Amir Garrett (4-5, 3.86). Game time is 12:05pm.

The first 500 fans to attend this game will receive a magnet featuring Timber Rattlers All-Star catcher Clint Coulter from Lamers Bus Lines. This is player magnet number three in a series of four that are being given away this season.

You can earn a free ticket to this game - or any other Monday home game remaining in the regular season - by purchasing a lunch entrée at either Qdoba location in Appleton (3813 E. Calumet Street or 4343 W. Wisconsin Avenue) as part of Qdoba Q*Monday.

Monday is also a day for a Baker Tilly Business Person Special. Show your business card when you purchase a ticket and for $13.50 you will receive a box seat ticket, a beverage, and your choice of brat or hot dog. The offer is also available to senior citizens (55 & older) courtesy of WVBO and AM1280 WNAM.

If you can't make it out to the game, tune into the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 11:45am. Monday's game is also available to subscribers of MiLB.TV.

Wisconsin Boxscore

Clint Terry and his 85 MPH FB continue to get it done, just a fantastic effort here.

There were no multi-hit games by any Rattler but on the flip side they played flawless defense in a crisply played 2:21 game.

Sounds' Rallies Fall Short In Oklahoma City, 7-5

Nashville's Gomez Belts His 11th Homer of the Year

Nashville Sounds

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/9/4/6/78466946/cuts/Hector_Gomez_519_1_Large_fpnfh2vr_mziy8nhz.jpg

OKLAHOMA CITY - Despite rallying to tie the game in the 7th and 8th innings, the Nashville Sounds (53-49) were unable to top the Oklahoma City RedHawks Sunday night at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, losing the series final 7-5 .

In the 8th inning, Sounds shortstop Hector Gomez, 3-for-4, belted a two-run home run, his 11th of the year, to level the game at five runs apiece; but the RedHawks answered by driving in two runs on a pair of two-out singles in the bottom of the frame, proving to be the difference.

Eight of the game's 12 runs were scored with two outs.

The RedHawks scored two runs in the 1st inning on Marc Krauss's groundout and a Preston Tucker RBI double to left field. In the following inning, Oklahoma City added one more run when Austin Wates slapped a single to centerfield, scoring Matt Duffy, who doubled to lead off the frame.

Nashville plated its first run in the 2nd inning on outfielder Kevin Mattison's single to right-center field to score Gomez from third base. Mattison finished the game two-for-four and has recorded multiple hits in five of his last seven games.

In the 5th inning, left fielder Eugenio Velez drove a two-out single to center field to pull Nashville to within one run. Nashville worked a tie game in the 7th with infielder Irving Falu's second bunt single of the night.

Tied 3-3 with one on and two outs in the bottom of the 7th inning, Sounds reliever Dustin Molleken entered the game looking for the inning's final out, but instead the RedHawks touched the righty for a pair of RBI singles for the 5-3 advantage.

Nashville reliever Brent Leach (4-2) was charged the loss after allowing two runs on three hits in the 8th inning.

Sounds starter Taylor Jungmann worked five innings for Nashville, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks. He fanned five RedHawks before reliever Kyle Heckathorn stepped in to begin the 6th inning.

The Sounds return to Nashville on Monday to begin their third-to-last homestand of the season. The club welcomes the Colorado Springs Sky Sox to town for a four-game series. RHP Donovan Hand (1-6, 5.44) will make the start for Nashville opposite the Sky Sox's LHP Chris Capuano (0-0, 3.52). Jeff Hem will have the call on 102.5 The GAME.

Nashville Boxscore

Interesting pitching match-up tomorrow...

Taylor Jungmann was alright but this < 6 IP thing is becoming a trend, he's only gone 6 IP or more in 4 of his 12 AAA starts. Tonight he threw 47 of 82 pitches for strikes.

Brewers get even with Grand Junction, win 4-2

By Helena Independent Record

The Helena Brewers broke open a tie game with two runs in the eighth inning Sunday, beating Grand Junction 4-2 at Kindrick Legion Field.

Tucker Neuhaus doubled down the left-field line to advance Brandon Diaz to third, putting two in scoring position with no outs. Natanael Mejia’s RBI single brought Diaz home, and Eric Williams laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Neuhaus.

It was a solid outing for Helena starter Brandon Woodruff, who pitched five innings of shutout baseball. He allowed just five hits while striking out a pair.

The Rockies (18-15) entered the eighth inning trailing Helena 2-0, then tied the game with two runs off reliever Devin Williams. Henry Garcia had an RBI single to put the visitors on the board, and he later scored the tying run on a wild pitch.

But after Williams (2-4) was charged with the blown save, he was able to come back and get the win thanks to his offense. Williams struck out Omar Carrizales to end the game. Following a four-hit night in the previous game, Carrizales was just 2 for 5 Sunday.

Grand Junction closer Marc Magliaro (0-1) took the loss.

Denver’s Kyle Freeland got the start for Grand Junction and was perfect through the first 10 batters he faced. Diaz had the first hit against Freeland, the eighth overall selection in the 2014 draft. Through four innings, Freeland allowed only two hits.

Tucker Neuhaus, playing third base, was the only Brewer with multiple hits, going 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored.

Helena catcher Greg McCall is still out with a knee ailment, while outfielder Elvis Rubio was also rested one day after getting hurt in the series opener against Grand Junction.

The Brewers improved to 13-20 with the win. They’ll take on the Rockies in Game 3 of the series tonight, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Not just “at Night” anymore.
