Cliff Lee

Building a package around Nelson would make a lot of sense. The Brewers are in pole position for a playoff run but they need a front-end starter, and Cliff Lee is one of the most reliable in the game.

I would have zero qualms about trading Nelson+ for Lee. Would prefer not to trade anybody from the next wave of high-upside prospects in the low minors though (like Coulter/Arcia/Taylor/Diaz/Medeiros/Gatewood/Harrison), so not sure how much Philadelphia would want.

Philly is going to want a LOT! There will be a lot of teams knocking on Lee's door, the question is, who will have the most to offer, and who will be willing to give up the package that it will take?

It is exciting, yet really scary to think what it would cost us to get him.

Only signed through 2015 and has an option for 2016. He's hurt so we should be able to get a deal on him without having to give up the farm so to speak.

Lee also makes 25 million dollars next year, with a 27.5 million dollar vesting option for 2016 or a 12.5 million buyout.

That's a lot of cash and then you also have to factor in the prospects he'd cost. I'd pass on going after Lee.

I'm reasonably fine with our rotation. It's the bullpen, firstbase, and Segura's pitiful hitting which concerns me most about the Brewers chances to make the playoffs. Even though Braun is hitting for average, it would also be nice to see him starting hitting home runs again. He only has one homer in his last 140 at bats.

IF Lee gets traded anywhere the Phillies will eat at least half of that contract. No one is going to trade for Lee and his full contract.

I'd rather pay the full salary and give up nothing than have them pay 50% and give up Nelson + . They need a complete rebuild and you could even trade him in the off season so you'd really only be paying him for a few months

Rumor has it that St. Louis is interested in David Price...That would suck!

Assuming the Brewers could absorb his salary, in all honesty I would rather have healthy Cliff Lee than David Price. Of course, it's unclear how healthy Lee is right now.

Cliff Lee on the mound tonight pitching versus the Giants. For what it's worth at least 1/3 of the teams in baseball have a scout there according to this Jerry Crasnick Tweet:

@jcrasnick: #Tigers, #bluejays, #orioles, #brewers, #angels, #royals, #sfgiants, #Rangers, #dbacks and #pirates have scouts in Philly tonight.
Not just “at Night” anymore.

I would rather trade for Papelbon over Lee honestly. Less prospects will have to be traded if the Brewers take on the majority of Papelbon's contract. I would rather give up a low end prospect than multiple prospects for Lee.

Might be able to get Mayberry thrown in on a Papelbon deal...the Phils have Ruf waiting in the wings and I'd think are tired out of waiting for Mayberry to turn the corner. Versatile high upside (1B / OF ) for cheap play if they can solve his RHP woes.

It wouldn't be the least bit surprising to see the Yankees who have wanted Lee for a long time, and at one point announced internally they had a trade for him to do just that in Jeter's last year.

I could also see the Angels taking on that salary...if he pitches well in his first few starts back(not a great start today).

With aces getting 200 million dollar deals now, this certainly isn't cost prohibitive for either team given the short time period.

Lee has a no trade clause with 20 teams, and the 9 other teams that the Phillies can trade him to without his consent are: Braves, Miami, Washington, Mets (AKA NL East/will never happen), Indians, Astros, Padres, Rays and Twins (AKA teams not really contending/why would they trade for him). so basically, in order for Lee to be traded he has to agree to it, and I bet he'll only agree to it if the other team will vest his final year. that is brilliant.

Well the Indians are only a half game out of the 2nd Wild Card and are 5.5 behind Detroit

Lee is still a very good pitcher, but at 36 years old, he's not the lights out ace he once was. I wouldn't unload the farm system for him at this point.

No, he pretty much is. His FIP this year is 2.87. Starting pitching age curves don't in general look like position player age curves. Pitchers pitch fine until they stop, usually due to injury or a build up of injuries.
