7.08 Any runner is out when—

* * *

(b) He intentionally interferes with a thrown ball; or hinders a fielder attempting to

make a play on a batted ball;

Rule 7.08(b) Comment: A runner who is adjudged to have hindered a fielder who is attempting to make a play on a batted ball is out whether it was intentional or not.

If, however, the runner has contact with a legally occupied base when he hinders the fielder, he shall not be called out unless, in the umpire’s judgment, such hindrance, whether it occurs on fair or foul territory, is intentional. If the umpire declares the hindrance intentional, the following penalty shall apply: With less than two out, the umpire shall declare both the runner and batter out. With two

out, the umpire shall declare the batter out.

So it is in the rule book multiple times and it seems under any reading of any of them Rendon has to be called out if Span is.

Thanks for the tech advice brewerfans! Got at bat in time to hear Strasburg walk Scooter out of pure fear.

My advice is too late but... I think it's like $20/month but MLB TV uses GPS not your billing address so you could watch the games out here in CA.

Evening, everybody. Nice start of the second half getting 4 off of Strasburg. Let's hope that we can keep the Nats off the scoreboard further.

Btw....may be old news but I just found out my Roku will overlay Uecker on the tv broadcast. Looks like Extra Innings is gone next season.

I have MLB.tv also. Where did you read or hear that Extra Innings is no more after 2014?

Yes, listening to Ueck is a nice option. :)

The MLB.TV app for Fire TV also came out last week, finally. Gets the job done in that you can watch games, but somewhat disappointing that it has none of the features that the browser version has, nor the At Bat app.

Wooten, then Duke. Everything ok with Will Smith? Had a couple bad outings, but I thought the dominant last outing plus time off would have had him in.

never understood the obsession managers have with bringing a RP just to face one guy. That's nitpicking at it's finest. Wooten got the out, why take him out? No wonder guys like Smith and K-Rod have logged so many innings.

Agreed completely. I understand wanting to take advantage of matchups that benefit us, but not at the cost of having to have a bullpen pitcher come in when they really weren't needed to get the job done.

I have a really good feeling that tonight's performance is going to be the start of a really nice run for the Brewers! We're going to hold on to win here, and beating Strasburg to kick off the second half will give this team the boost it needs.

I agree. If the guy coming up is hitting .350 against Wooten, then I can understand taking him out. Baseball is a game of hot streaks and cold streaks. We were long overdue for a cold streak. We got it out of the way and now it's time for a long winning streak. I think a lot of bad things would have to happen for the Brewers to lose the division. Everyone in the division sucks except for St. Louis and they just lost Molina. We'll be fine.

INTERFERENCE

(a) Offensive interference is an act by the team at bat which interferes with,

obstructs, impedes, hinders or confuses any fielder attempting to make a play.

If the umpire declares the batter, batter-runner, or a runner out for interference,

all other runners shall return to the last base that was in the judgment of the

umpire, legally touched at the time of the interference, unless otherwise provided

by these rules.

According to Ueck the throw beat Rendon anyway. Even if it didn't, how could he have reached first at the time of the interference, unless the interference happened well after the throw, and in that case how is it interference? It has to be a blown call.

Later Bill said he found a rule that could apply to the situation. Basically, if the umpires thought it was unintentional interference, the interferer is out and then it's a dead ball, so the batter would be safe.

However in the post game this is what Ron said about it ''I think they got it wrong, but I can't tell you the ruling on it because I've never seen it before,'' Roenicke said. ''(Crew Chief Bill Miller) said once the umpire calls him safe and then calls the interference it becomes a dead ball.'' That just makes no sense and I think they got it wrong.

Remember what Yoda said:

"Cubs lead to Cardinals. Cardinals lead to dislike. Dislike leads to hate. Hate leads to constipation."

The comment to 7.08 addresses intentional v unintentional interference. If the interference is deemed intentional both runners are out. If it were deemed unintentional Span would have been called safe since he'd reached second. Once they call Span out they have to call Rendon out. Plus Rendon was out anyway so how can he be put in a better position based on the interference by his teammate.

Plus the rules generally make sense. As the Nat announcers commented how can the guy who was safe be called out and the guy who was out be called safe. How can you possibly not know that has to be wrong. Calling Span safe and Rendon out would have been arguable although I think wrong. Calling both out was I think the right call. Doing what they did can't possibly be defended and was just bizarre. There should be a clarification at the least.
