Baseball America's Prospect Hot Sheet --

In The Team Photo

Clint Coulter, c, Brewers. Given that they have all-star starter Jonathan Lucroy in the big leagues, the Brewers can afford to be patient with Coulter’s development. His bat is too advanced for low Class A Wisconsin—he went 6-for-14 (.429) with two homers and seven walks this week—but the extra time in the Midwest League can only benefit his defensive growth. The 20-year-old ranks among the MWL leaders with 16 homers, 63 RBIs, 55 walks and a .512 slugging percentage.

Last day to sign draftees. Mass, I hope you're out on the Cape talking Kolton Mahoney into signing.

Real life got in the way, and I didn't get to visit Mahoney during his club's visit to the nearest Cape outpost Wednesday as I had planned. Can't believe it's been 12 years since I last made such a journey specifically to chat with a potential Brewer signing.

So like you, I wait to see if any additional talent signs today from this year's draft.

Don't look now, but 50 ABs in Jason Rogers is working on replacing Hunter Morris as the best option for a minor league first base call-up. I can't imagine he would do enough to actually replace any of our current options unless they completely tanked, but maybe a September call-up if he keeps putting up a solid line?

Final: St. Lucie 3, Brevard County 4

Sermo's walk-off blast leads 'Tees over Mets, 4-3

Manatees record second walk-off in a week to stay atop North Division

By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. - After not recording a walk-off win all season, the Brevard County Manatees tallied their second victory game-ending victory in a week, as they defeated the St. Lucie Mets, 4-3 at Space Coast Stadium on Friday night.

With no one on and one out, Jose Sermo stepped up to the plate against the Mets side-arming, left-handed reliever T.J. Chism. On the first pitch of the at-bat, Sermo uncorked a towering blast that cleared the left-center field wall and landed on the berm.

Sermo's home run was his second of the year and the Manatees' (15-8 second half, 51-38 overall) first walk-off home run since T.J. Mittelstaedt's game-winner against Tampa on August 7 of last year. It is also the 'Tees second walk-off victory in a week, as Alfredo Rodriguez drove in the winning run on Saturday night with a fielder's choice against the Charlotte Stone Crabs.

However, Sermo's heroics would not have been needed if it were not for a shaky top of the eighth inning.

With St. Lucie (16-9, 56-38) trailing 3-0, Manatees reliever Scott Lieser started the frame off strong by retiring the first two batters on a strikeout and a ground out to short. Then Major League rehabber Taylor Teagarden sparked the comeback with a single to right. Jared King and Cam Maron followed suit with a pair singles themselves, as Teagarden scored to trim the lead to 3-1.

Joe Ayrault then decided to call on his closer, Mark Williams, to try quell the rally. The right-hander, who was making his first appearance in exactly a week, could not locate his pitches, as he walked Phillip Evans on four pitches to load the bases.

It did not get better from there. On a 3-1 pitch, Williams then hit Aderlin Rodriguez on the left elbow to force home a run and cut the Manatees lead down to one. The next batter, Jeff McNeil, proceeded to walk on five pitches. Maron would score to tie the game at three.

Williams would battle back and retire the final four batters he faced, two via the strike out, to record his first win of the year.

Brevard grabbed the initial lead with a run in the fourth inning. With one out, Cameron Garfield cranked a double to right-center field. After Victor Roache flew out to left, Rodriguez came through with the Manatees first big hit of the game.

On a 3-1 pitch, Rodriguez sliced a single through the hole between third and short. Garfield was able to motor home from second to give the Manatees the lead, 1-0.

In the seventh, the 'Tees added some cushion courtesy of Michael Reed. Mets starter Kevin McGowan (2-1, 2.78 ERA) began to tire, as he walked both Rodriguez and Brandon Macias to start the inning.

St. Lucie manager Ryan Ellis then called upon righty reliever Julian Hilario to stop the bleeding. After a sacrifice bunt advanced both runners and a pop out to second, Reed stepped in. The right fielder grounded a single up the middle to score both Rodriguez and Macias and extend the lead to three.

Despite not recording a decision, Hobbs Johnson (9-6, 2.80) pieced together another phenomenal outing. The left-hander surrendered just four hits over six shutout frames. Johnson walked just one and struck out six. With tonight's performance, Johnson has now gone 12.1 innings without allowing a run.

The Manatees will look to keep their perch atop the Florida State League North Division when they wrap up their series against the Mets tomorrow night with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at Space Coast Stadium. It will be a battle of FSL All-Stars, as Damien Magnifico (6-5, 3.70) will get the start for Brevard against St. Lucie's Matthew Koch (7-3, 4.10).

Brevard County Box Score

No Orlando Arcia tonight after he left yesterday's game with an undisclosed injury. After having about two weeks off in late June/early July due to rainouts, Hobbs Johnson has been dominant in his last two starts, going 6 and 6.2 innings in his last two starts without allowing a run. Cameron Garfield has been heating up lately, hitting .306 over his last ten games and recorded his third straight multi-hit game tonight. Playing time has been sparse this season for Jose Sermo, but he's hitting .417 in July and has hit safely in four of his last five games.

Brevard County Play-By-Play

Brevard County Bottom of the 9th

Maikis De La Cruz remains in the game as the designated hitter.

Pitching Change: T. J. Chism replaces Julian Hilario.

Brandon Macias flies out to center fielder Gilbert Gomez.

Jose Sermo homers (2) on a fly ball to left field.

Owlz shut out Brewers 5-0

By Dustin Daniel / Helena Brewers

The Orem Owlz (21-10) shut out the Helena Brewers (12-19) 5-0 on Friday to pick up the series win in the two teams' final meeting of the year.

Josh Uhen (1-2) picked up the loss, despite his best outing of the year. The righty tossed six innings of one-run baseball, giving up four hits, walking one and striking out three.

The lone run off Uhen would come in the sixth when Andrew Daniel hit a solo homerun to left-center. It was Daniel's third homer of the season.

Trailing 1-0 the Brewers put J.B. Kole on the mound for the seventh. The Owlz would pad their lead with four more runs on four hits including a leadoff double for Michael Hermosillo. Kole would not make it out of the inning, just pitching two thirds of the frame.

Helena had just four hits on the night tying a season low which was set back on June 25th, against the Great Falls Voyagers. Brandon Diaz came up with two of those four hits, including his sixth double of the season.

Gregory Munoz's nine-game hitting streak came to an end as he went 0-for-3 with a strikeout.

It was just the second time this season the Brewers have been shut out and the first time at home.

The Brewers will now face off against the Grand Junction Rockies in a four-game series starting Saturday at Kindrick Field. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.

Helena Box Score

A night after putting up 15 runs the Helena offense was held to just 4 hits and no runs.

CF Brandon Diaz was 2-for-4 with a double, the lone extra base hit for the Brewers tonight.

Starting RHP Josh Uhen's final line was 6.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO, 1 HR allowed.

AZL Brewers SS Jake Gatewood replaced after batting in the second inning of tonight's game. Hopefully it is not injury related although that would seem to be the most likely scenario.

Bowling Green beats Rattlers 6-2 to take series

Rattlers strike out 15 times in second straight loss

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Bowling Green Hot Rods rode a four-run third inning to a 6-2 victory over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Friday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The Rattlers dropped their second straight game to the Hot Rods to drop the three game series to their Eastern Division opponents.

Bowling Green (44-52 overall, 12-15 second half) loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the third inning against Wisconsin starting pitcher Victor Diaz. Julian Ridings doubled to left-center to drive in the first two runs of the game. Kean Wong followed with a sacrifice fly to left. Ty Young got the final run of the frame home with a two-out single to center to drive in Ridings for a 4-0 lead.

Daryl George hit the first pitch of the top of the fourth inning over the wall for a home run and a 5-0 advantage.

Wisconsin (50-46, 14-13) had trouble putting the ball in play against Bowling Green starter German Marquez. The right-hander struck out eight of the first nine Timber Rattlers batters he faced. Marquez faced the minimum through the first four innings despite allowing a single and a hit batsman thanks to a caught stealing and a double play.

The Rattlers broke through in the bottom of the fifth. Clint Coulter extended his current hitting streak to seven games with a leadoff single. David Denson followed with a single and Taylor Brennan drew a walk to load the bases. Dustin DeMuth also drew a walk and that forced in a run. Marquez got Jose Pena to ground into a 6-4-3 double play that allowed Denson to score. The inning ended on a strikeout but the Rattlers had pulled to within 5-2.

Bowling Green added an unearned run against reliever Tyler Spurlin in the top of the sixth. George drew a walk and went to second on a grounder. He scored on an error with two outs and the Hot Rods were up 6-2.

Wisconsin tried to rally against Bradley Schreiber in the bottom of the seventh. Brennan singled with one out to extend his hitting streak to a season high eight games. DeMuth followed with a double to put runners on second and third. But, the strikeout bug bit the Rattlers again as Schreiber struck out the next two batters of the inning to end the last Wisconsin scoring opportunity of the game.

Anthony Banda pitched three scoreless innings of relief for the Rattlers to give the offense a chance to rally, but it didn't happen.

Schreiber worked a 1-2-3 eighth and Andrew Hanse pitched a perfect ninth to close out the Rattlers.

Wisconsin hitter struck out fifteen times on Friday night. That's the most times they have struck out in a game this season. Marquez had nine punchouts in five innings. Schreiber collected five in three innings. Hanse got one in his lone inning of work.

The homestand continues on Saturday night with a game against the Dayton Dragons. Tristan Archer (3-4, 4.12) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Dayton sends Nick Travieso (7-5, 4.05) to the mound. Game time is 6:35pm.

Wisconsin Box Score

Chris McFarland, Coulter, Denson, Brennan, & DeMuth had the only hits tonight for the T-Rats (one apiece).

Sounds Fend Off RedHawks, 7-6

Nashville Sounds

OKLAHOMA CITY - The first-place Nashville Sounds (52-47) survived a late surge from the Oklahoma City RedHawks Friday night at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, holding on for a 7-6 victory in game one of the doubleheader.

Leading by one run with one out in the 7th inning, the Sounds allowed Oklahoma City a pair of runners in scoring position; but closer Jeremy Jeffress settled in to fire a strikeout and induce a groundout to end the threat and pick up his fifth save of the season.

Nashville took the early 2-0 lead with a pair of RBI singles in the first inning from designated hitter Jeremy Hermida and outfielder Sean Halton, 3-for-4. Hermida's knock scored Caleb Gindl, who drew a four-pitch walk, while Halton's plated Jason Rogers, 2-for-4.

The RedHawks cut the Sounds' lead down to one in the home half of the third inning when outfielder Domingo Santana drove a sacrifice fly to right field to score Carlos Perez.

The run came against Sounds pitcher Michael Blazek, who worked a four-inning start for Nashville to limit the RedHawks to three hits.

The Sounds offense exploded for five runs in the 4th inning. Catcher Matt Pagnozzi drew a bases-loaded walk to score a run, which was followed by Pete Orr's bases-clearing RBI triple. Rogers added one more run by driving a single past the RedHawks' third baseman.

Nashville hitters batted around in the inning while Halton recorded two of his three hits. Halton becomes the first Sounds player to record two hits in the same inning since Caleb Gindl did so on July 1, 2012 vs. Iowa.

Oklahoma City mounted a rally in the 6th inning by starting the frame with five consecutive hits off Sounds reliever Dustin Molleken. Shortstop Jonathan Villar hit an RBI single, while Perez and Austin Wates drove RBI doubles. During Marc Krauss' at-bat, Molleken chucked a wild pitch to allow the runner from third to score and make it a 7-6 game.

Sounds reliever Brent Leach (4-1) picked up the win after working a scoreless 5th inning with two strikeouts.

Following the nightcap, the Sounds will play game three of the series on Saturday night at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. RHP Mike Fiers (6-5, 2.52) will make the start for Nashville opposite the RedHawks' RHP Tommy Shirley (0-0, 6.00).

Sounds Slip Late In 9-7 Loss

Nashville's Orr Contributes Three Hits; Gindl Homers

Nashville Sounds

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/8/4/6/81836846/cuts/MPS_9394_Large_cobaalws_8c32hck7.jpg

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- The first-place Nashville Sounds (52-48) could not contain the resilient Oklahoma City RedHawks (51-50), as the Sounds blew two leads in a 9-7 loss in Game 2 of a doubleheader at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark on Friday night.

Trailing 7-6 heading into the bottom of the sixth, the RedHawks reeled three runs off of Sounds reliever Jose De La Torre, who was saddled with the loss. The Sounds have now held leads in 19 of their 29 road losses during the 2014 season, but still sport an impressive 6-2 mark in games played as a part of doubleheaders this season.

It didn't take long for the Sounds to continue their hot hitting from Game 1, as Caleb Gindl smacked a two-run home run following a Pete Orr single to lead off the game to give Nashville an early 2-0 advantage. Gindl's blast gives Nashville homers in 14 of its last 18 games.

The Sounds padded their lead by adding two more runs in the top of the third, as Nashville strung four straight hits off of RedHawks starter Asher Wojciechowski to begin the frame. After Kevin Mattison led the inning off with a double, Orr scored him on a bunt single and advanced on a throwing error. Jason Rogers then followed with an RBI single.

Orr was an important part of Nashville's offense, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored in Game 2 while racking up four hits total across the doubleheader.

Like in Game 1, the RedHawks struck back, but they were able to complete the comeback to avoid being swept in the twinbill. A two-run double by Jonathan Villar in the bottom of the third cut the Sounds lead to 3-2. Oklahoma City then had their breakthrough in the bottom of the fifth, as the RedHawks offense tagged starter Ariel Pena and reliever Arcenio Leon for four runs on three hits and three walks.

Pena (6-6) was effective in his first four innings before struggling in the fifth. He ended up going 4.1 innings, allowing four runs on three hits while striking out four and walking up three.

Nashville took the lead back from the RedHawks in the top of the sixth when Mattison knocked in two runs with his second double of the game, but the bullpen would not be able to hold on for the victory.

The Sounds and RedHawks will resume the series tomorrow at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Sounds ace RHP Mike Fiers (6-5, 2.52) will make his first start after the All-Star break opposite Oklahoma City RHP Tommy Shirley (0-0, 6.00). Jeff Hem will have the call on 102.5 The GAME.
