So, instead of Johnnie Lowe in another spot start, Nashville's Monday starter is listed as RHP Donovan Hand.

The rotation now sits at Blazek - Pena - Fiers - Jungmann - Hand.

Hand's spot could simply be a rotation place-holding turn as well, like Lowe, he's hardly fully stretched out.

Manatees will have a manager walkthrough at 5 ET. Earliest they would start. Sounds like the field is in bad shape. They already have 4 doubleheaders scheduled in, I think, 8 days so the 'Tees will have a brutal schedule the second half.

Some Huntsville notes from Steve --

The Stars won their sixth straight game over Tennessee, all of which have been in Huntsville… Drew Gagnon turned in a quality start. It was the first time Huntsville strung together two consecutive quality starts since June 25th and June 26th when Jed Bradley and Gagnon did it against Montgomery. The Stars starters have now turned in a quality start in three out of their last four games. When the Stars get a quality start, they are 31-7…Huntsville starters in their last 16 starts are 5-6 with a 5.12 ERA (47 ER, 82.66 IP)… In the month of July, the Huntsville pitching staff has the third highest ERA in the Southern League at 4.36.

Adam Wiesenburger hit his first home run of the season, and his first since last July 23rd in Huntsville also against Tennessee. Weisenburger hit five home runs last year. The Weisenburger home run was the Stars' 8th home run in their last eight games… Nick Ramirez recorded a three-hit game, his sixth of the season. He added two more RBI to his total, which is now at 65. He now has seven RBI in his last eight games….

Josh Prince went 0-1 with three walks. Prince has now walked 47 times which are the 5th most in the Southern League. It was the second time in the last four games where he walked three times (7/12 at Chattanooga). He is now 17 for his last 60 (.283) at the plate. Prince stole his 29th base of the year which now leads the Southern League.

Since the Stars clinched the 1st half championship they’ve gone 20-18.

Final: Helena 15, Orem 7

Offense charges Brewers win over Owlz

By Dustin Daniel / Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers (12-18) powered their way to a 15-7 win over the Orem Owlz (20-10) on Thursday night on the power of 17 hits.

The Brewers set a season-high for runs on Thursday with 15, courtesy of a seven-run seventh inning.

Helena grabbed a 2-1 lead after the first inning and would never lose it.

Arjenis Fernandez was roughed up in the start for Orem, giving up eight runs on nine hits in his four innings of work.

Sthervin Matos would take Fernandez deep in the fourth for a three-run homer to break open an 8-2 lead for the Brewers. Matos had his best game of the season, going 3-for-5 with two homeruns, six RBI and two runs scored. He now has 15 RBI in just nine games in the Pioneer League.

The Owlz pulled to within one run in the seventh when they made it an 8-7 ballgame, but the Brewers would respond with a seven-run bottom of the frame to put it away for good.

Sthervin Matos had his second homer of the game and Eric Williams hit his first professional homerun to left-center. Williams was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.

Cy Sneed pitched the final three innings for the Brewers and closed out the game by striking out Ryan Seiz.

The Brewers and the Owlz will face off in a rubber match Friday night at Kindrick Field. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.

Helena Box Score

2B Francisco Castillo was 2-for-4 with a walk.

3B Tucker Neuhaus was 3-for-4 with a walk and 2 RBI's. Neuhaus had two hits up the middle to center field and a line drive base hit to right field.

Sthervin Matos was playing 1B this evening and had a 3-for-5, 2 HR, 6 RBI night. Since arriving in Helena Matos is now 17-for-38 with 3 doubles and 4 homers. Still an extremely small sample size, but very encouraging nonetheless.

The only Helena batter to go hitless was the guy you might least expect, C Greg McCall finished the night 0-for-5.

LF Mitch Meyer had a hit, but also showed off some defensive prowess. He was credited with two outfield assists for throwing out base runners, once at second base and once at home plate.

DH Eric Williams and SS Gregory Munoz each had two hits including a homer for Williams and a double for Munoz.

CF Edgardo Rivera was 3-for-5 and had two stolen bases.

Helena Game Log

It was the night of the big inning(s) for Helena. The first of which was a five-run 4th inning which included 3 singles, a double and Sthervin Matos homerun.

Helena Bottom of the 4th

  • Eric Williams singles on a fly ball to right fielder Caleb Adams.

Helena outdid their earlier big inning with a seven-run 7th inning. It included 4 singles and homeruns from Eric Williams and once again, Sthervin Matos. While Helena sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning, Catcher Greg McCall had the dubious distinction of bookending the frame with strikeouts (one looking, one swinging).

Wagner leads 'Tees past Mets in Game One, 6-1

Wagner picks up fifth straight win in his first complete game of the season

By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees

Brevard County Manatees starting pitcher Tyler Wagne, seen from a game earlier this year, tossed his first complete game of the season in a 6-1 victory over the St. Lucie Mets in game one of Thursday's doubleheader at Tradition Field. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - Behind another phenomenal outing from Tyler Wagner (9-4, 1.71 ERA) and a pair of doubles from Tyrone Taylor the Brevard County Manatees defeated the St. Lucie Mets, 6-1 in game one of Thursday's doubleheader at Tradition Field.

Despite a two-hour and thirty-two minute delay before first pitch due to poor field conditions, Wagner showed no sign of rust. He stifled St. Lucie (15-8 second half, 55-37 overall) en route to his first complete game since May 8 of last year with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.

The former Utah Ute did not record the high strikeout numbers that he had in his past few outings, but he was effective nonetheless.

Wagner was strong over all seven innings, allowing just one run, a solo blast by Eudy Pina in the third, on four hits. He struck out just one, but did not walk a batter.

With the victory, Wagner put himself in a four-way tie with teammate Hobbs Johnson, Bradenton's Chad Kuhl and Fort Myers' Jose Berrios for the Florida State League-lead in wins with nine. He also lowered his league-best ERA to an incredible 1.71.

Wagner finished his night with a flourish. He retired the final 11 batters he faced and 14 of the last 15, as he recorded his fifth straight win.

In his last five starts, Wagner has been untouchable. He has allowed a measly two runs over his last 34.1 innings which equates to a mind-boggling 0.52 ERA.

Wagner got all the support he needed when the Manatees (14-7, 50-37) offense exploded and set the tone for the rest of the game.

After Brandon Macias led off with an infield single to short, Nathan Orf followed with a single to left. Orlando Arcia attempted to sacrifice the runners to second and third, but his bunt did not hug the third base line enough. Mets starter and Major League rehabber John Lannan (0-2, 7.88) shot off the mound and threw on to third to get the force for out number one.

That brought Taylor to the plate, who made Arcia's mistake an afterthought. The 'Tees center fielder cranked a double into the gap in left-center field. Both Orf and Arcia scampered home and Brevard County had the game's first lead, 2-0.

After Pina's home run trimmed the lead to one going to the fourth, Brevard rallied back for two more in the fourth.

The rally began with a double to left by Mike Garza and a single to right by Alfredo Rodriguez, which put runners on the corners with nobody out. Macias would bring home Garza with a sacrifice fly to center to extend the 'Tees lead to 3-1.

Following an Orf single, Arcia drove home another run with a single to right to push the Manatees advantage to three, 4-1.

Brevard County pushed across two more runs with tallies in the fifth and seventh.

Michael Reed started the fifth with a triple to right off Mets reliever Seth Lugo and scored on a lined single to right by Garza.

In the seventh, Taylor drove his second double of the game and 33rd two-bagger of the year to left and raced home on a single through the box by Cameron Garfield.

The Manatees offense finished an impressive game with a whopping 14 base-hits. The 'Tees recorded four extra-base hits and four players - Orf, Taylor, Garfield and Garza - put together multi-hit nights. Garza's performance stood out most of all, as the Manatees first baseman pieced together a season-high four hits, which also tied a career-high.

Final: Brevard County 2, St. Lucie 3

'Tees drop Game Two to Mets, 3-2

Manatees get go-ahead run on base in seventh, but can't pull ahead

By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees struck for two runs in the seventh, but could not complete the comeback, as they dropped game two of Thursday's doubleheader, 3-2 to the St. Lucie Mets at Tradition Field.

Trailing 3-0, Mike Garza started the comeback effort against Mets reliever Beck Wheeler with a double into right-center field. Alfredo Rodriguez followed with a four-pitch walk. After Parker Berberet whiffed on a 3-2 pitch, Brandon Macias walked to load the bases for Nathan Orf.

That was all for Wheeler, as the Mets (16-8 second half, 56-37 overall) called on Paul Sewald to try and close out the win. He struck out Orf for out number two, but then Jose Sermo came up with the big blow.

Sermo, who came into the ballgame in the fifth when Orlando Arcia left with an undisclosed injury, drilled a double down the right field line. Garza and Rodriguez came across to score, while Macias rolled into third to trim the Mets lead to 3-2.

After a two double, two RBI performance in game one, Taylor looked to play the role of hero once again in the nightcap.

However, Sewald got the best of him. The right-handed closer forced Taylor to hit a lazy fly ball to shallow center field. Gilbert Gomez camped under it to make the catch to end the ballgame and seal Sewald's seventh save of the year.

After the game was scoreless going to the bottom of the fifth, the Mets grabbed the lead despite recording just one hit in the frame.

Martin Viramontes came in out of the bullpen and had trouble locating his pitches. The right-hander walked Gomez and Maikis De La Cruz, which set up a bunting situation for the nine-hitter Eudy Pina.

Pina squared and laid a sacrifice bunt down the third base line that was fielded by Viramontes. His throw to first was high and went over the glove of the first baseman Rodriguez. Gomez scored and De La Cruz went to third to give the Mets their first lead of the day, 1-0.

After back-to-back strike outs of Jeff McNeil and Phillip Evans, Viramontes ended his night by walking Cam Maron to load the bases again.

Joe Ayrault called on Stephen Peterson out of the bullpen to face the switch-hitting Jared King. Peterson did his job by forcing a weak ground ball to short, but Arcia's throw was late. De La Cruz sped home with another run to extend the Mets lead to two.

It was on this play that Arcia came up lame and was removed from the ballgame. He was checked on earlier in the ballgame after he fielded a ground ball up the middle in the fourth, but remained in the contest. Sermo would come in to play third base, while Macias moved over to finish the game at short.

St. Lucie tacked on another run off Peterson in the sixth. After a lead-off single by Gavin Cecchini and a walk to Gomez, De La Cruz sacrifice bunted both runners to second and third. Pina then followed with a sacrifice fly to right to increase the St. Lucie lead to 3-0.

The loss put a damper on a fabulous spot start by left-hander Mike Strong (1-1, 2.87 ERA). The former Oklahoma State Cowboy, who was making his first start since August 20 of last year with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, allowed three hits and two walks over four scoreless frames.

His counterpart was even more impressive, as Michael Fulmer (4-8, 4.08) scattered four hits and a walk over six shutout innings. The Oklahoma native showed his dominance by using his mid-90's fastball to strike out nine Manatees (14-8, 50-38) en route to his fourth win of the season.

Brevard County will look to get back in the win column tomorrow night, as their series with St. Lucie shifts to Space Coast Stadium with first pitch slated for 6:35 p.m. Hobbs Johnson (9-6, 3.01) will go for his Florida State League-leading 10th win of the season against right-hander Kevin McGowan (2-1, 2.16), who will make his fourth start with the team since being called up from Class-A Savannah.

Brewers power past Owlz

by Curt Synness, Helena Independent Record

The Helena Brewers — and Sthervin Matos — used two big innings to pound out a 15-7 win over the Orem Owlz in Pioneer League action at Kindrick Legion Field on Thursday.

The Brewers scored five runs in the fourth inning to go up 8-2. After the Owlz closed the gap to just one run in the seventh, the hosts answered back with an emphatic seven-run inning to stretch their cushion to 15-7.

Matos, a first baseman from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, blasted a pair of home runs and posted six RBIs.

Helena improves to 12-18, while Orem slips to 20-10.

In the fourth frame, the Brewers sent eight men to the plate, with the big blow being Matos’ three-run homer over the left-field fence. Also sparking the offense was Gregory Munoz’s double, and singles by Eric Williams, Edgardo Rivera and Tucker Nuehaus.

Orem mounted a comeback and scored two in the fifth, but it could’ve been much worse if not for a stellar play by Helena’s defense.

With runners on second and third with none out, Bo Way drove a shot that bounced high off the left-field wall. Wendell Soto scored, but when Andrew Daniel was also waved home, a perfect relay from Mitch Meyer to shortstop Munoz to catcher Greg McCall resulted in the Orem runner being nipped at the plate by McCall’s swipe tag.

Matos again led the charge in the seventh with a two-out, two-run homer over the left-center field wall.

The inning started badly for the visitors. After Elvis Rubio was hit by a pitch, Meyer drove a single to center, and both Brewers wound up scoring thanks to the throwing error by third baseman Zach Houchins.

Adding to the inning’s onslaught were Williams with a solo home run, and base raps by Rivera, Francisco Castillo and Nuehaus.

The Brewers outhit their opponents 17-12 on the night, led by Matos, Nuehaus and Rivera, with three base knocks apiece.

Matos, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound 19-year old, lifted his season batting average to .447.

Houtchins went 3 for 5 for Orem, driving in three runs.

Helena used three pitchers on the night, with starter Luis Ortega notching the win. He went five innings and allowed eight hits, while giving up four runs.

Junior Rincon and Cy Sneed performed the relief work, with Sneed getting the save.

Owlz starter Arjenis Fernandez was saddled with the loss.

The teams meet for the rubber match of the three-game series — Orem won 10-7 on Wednesday — tonight at Kindrick Legion Field, with the first pitch slated for 7:05 PM (8:05 Central).
