Gagnon Pitches Stars To Victory

Steve Jarnicki, Huntsville Stars

Huntsville, AL - The Huntsville Stars climbed out of an early 2-0 hole, and defeated the Tennessee Smokies 6-4 Wednesday night at Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville.

The Smokies took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second against Huntsville starter Drew Gagnon (6-4, photo above). Jae-Hoon Ha lined a two-run, two-out single to left field.

The Stars responded with a run in their second. With runners at first and third base, Adam Weisenburger hit into a double play scoring Hainley Statia.

The Stars tied the game in the bottom of the third. Josh Prince walked and stole second base. Prince scored on Nick Ramirez's two-out single into centerfied knotting the game at 2-2.

Weisenburger gave the Stars a 3-2 lead in the fourth. He hit a two-out solo home run to left. It was Weisenburger's first home run of the season.

The Stars extended their lead when they scored a run in their fourth consecutive inning in the bottom of the fifth.

Ramirez blooped an RBI single to shallow centerfield scoring Gagnon. However, two runs scored on the play. Second baseman Stephen Bruno fielded the ball in the outfield and made an errant throw to shortstop Addison Russell at second enabling Prince to score as well.

Statia bunted a ball up the first baseline scoring Nick Shaw making it 6-2.

The Smokies drew two runs closer to the Stars by posting a pair of runs in the seventh against Gagnon. Ha grounded out to shortstop scoring Charlie Cutler making it 6-3. Jorge Soler pinch hit and clubbed an RBI single to left cutting the lead to 6-4.

Gagnon, who earned his sixth win of the season, turned in his ninth quality start. He pitched seven strong innings allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits.

The Stars bullpen did the rest. Big leaguer Jim Henderson, on an MLB rehab assignment for the Brewers, pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning. Henderson struck out a pair on a total of eighteen pitches, thirteen landing for strikes.

David Goforth entered in the ninth. After allowing a leadoff single to Cutler, Goforth induced a double play off Luis Flores's bat to erase the leadoff man.

Goforth nailed down his 19th save of the year after he got Pin-Chieh Chen to ground out to shortstop Yaidel Rivera.

The Stars (13-13, 59-37) lead the Tennessee Smokies (13-13, 46-49) 1-0 in their five game series. Game two will be Thursday. The Stars will have RHP Jacob Barnes (2-3, 4.63) on the mound. Tennessee will feature RHP Corey Black (4-6, 2.71). The game can be heard starting at 6:15 pm CDT on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM and wtkiradio.com.

Huntsville Box Score

2011 3rd round RHP Drew Gagnon, not necessarily a ground ball pitcher, etched 13 of them in his seven-inning outing. Gagnon's double lifted his average to .261, as Stars' pitchers continue to produce at the plate.

Josh Prince drew three walks, scored two runs, and stole his 29th base in 37 attempts. Nick Ramirez was 3-for-4 (double, two RBI, OPS now at .799). Adam Weisenburger's on-base skills are strong, but the slugging is down from 2013, so the home run here was welcome.

Huntsville Game Log

Milwaukee needs you, Jim Henderson --

Tennessee Top of the 8th

Pitching Change: Jim Henderson replaces Drew Gagnon, batting 5th, replacing third baseman Hainley Statia.

Defensive Substitution: Greg Hopkins replaces pitcher Drew Gagnon, batting 9th, playing third base.

Stephen Bruno strikes out swinging.

Addison Russell flies out to right fielder Kentrail Davis.

Christian Villanueva called out on strikes.

Wisconsin sprints past Hot Rods for 6-3 win

Coulter homers, Pitchers combine for 14 Ks

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers rallied from a 3-2 deficit to defeat the Bowling Green Hot Rods 6-3 on Wednesday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Clint Coulter homered and drove in three runs for the Rattlers, who won their fourth straight game.

The Timber Rattlers (50-44 overall, 14-11 second half) grabbed the lead with a first inning run. Chris McFarland singled - the first of his four singles on the night - with one out. He went to second on an errant pickoff throw and stole third. Coulter drove McFarland in with a two-out single to left for a 1-0 lead.

Jose Pena launched a two-out, solo home run in the bottom of the second inning to give the Rattlers a 2-0 lead. The homer was the sixth of the season for Pena, but his first since May 28.

Timber Rattlers starting pitcher Tyler Alexander retired the first nine batters he faced. But, he ran into trouble in the top of the fourth.

Julian Ridings and Juniel Querrecuto started the Bowling Green fourth with consecutive singles. Alexander got the first out of the inning with a strikeout, but gave up a single to Ty Young the drove in a run. Armando Araiza drew a walk to load the bases, but Alexander got the second out with another strikeout.

Alexander got ahead of Daryl George 0-2. George fouled off four straight pitches from Alexander before dumping a single into right that scored two runs to put the Hot Rods (42-52, 10-15) up 3-2.

A walk and a pair of Wisconsin errors in the top of the fifth inning loaded the bases for Bowling Green, but Alexander escaped with three strikeouts. The Wisconsin starter set a new professional single-game high for strikeouts with nine. But he trailed 3-2.

Coulter evened the game and got Alexander off the hook for the loss with a solo home run to start the bottom of the sixth. Coulter, who also homered in Monday's game, has fifteen home runs this season for Wisconsin.

Taylor Brennan was next and his fly ball to center was misjudged and dropped in for a double. Omar Garcia bunted Brennan over to third. Dustin DeMuth lined a single to left over the drawn-in infield to send Brennan home with the run that put the Rattlers up 4-3.

Wisconsin loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning on singles by Johnny Davis and McFarland and an intentional walk to Michael Ratterree. That brought Coulter to the plate and he drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch to force in Davis for a 5-3 lead. Coulter's three RBI on the night gives him 61 RBI for the season.

The Timber Rattlers tacked on one more run in the eighth for a 6-3 lead. Garcia reached on a bunt single and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by DeMuth. Garcia stole third, his 34th stolen base of the season, and scored when the throw to get him went into left field.

Taylor Williams came on to relieve Alexander in the top of the sixth and tossed four scoreless innings without issuing a walk. Williams pitched around five hits and struck out five to earn his seventh win of the season. Williams is 6-0 with two saves and a no decision in his last nine appearances.

Wisconsin's offense matched their season high for hits in a game with fourteen. The Timber Rattlers have reached double digits in hits four times in the first five games of this ten-game homestand.

Game two of the series is Thursday night. Preston Gainey (2-5, 3.79) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Chris Kirsch (4-6, 3.04) is set to start for the Hot Rods. Game time is 7:05 PM.

Avenue Jewelers and the Timber Rattlers present Ladies Night with lots of special samples of cheese, chocolate, and Barefoot Wine for the ladies on Thursday. A special auction to Win a Date with a Timber Rattler will be held during the game with the proceeds to benefit Christine Ann Domestic Abuse Services. One lucky fan will walk away from a Diamond Dig during the game with a diamond from Avenue Jewelers.

Thirsty Thursday presented by Arty's Old Fashioned and 95.9 KISS FM means 21-oz Pepsi products, 16-oz Miller products, or Arty's Old Fashioned drinks for just $2.

If you can't make it out to the ballpark, tune in for the broadcast on television, radio, or the internet. Time Warner Cable SportsChannel will have the television broadcast starting at 7:00 PM. The radio call may be heard on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting at 6:45 PM. Subscribers to MiLB.TV can catch the action, too.

WP: Taylor Williams (7-1)

LP: William Gabay (1-1)

TIME: 3:02

ATTN: 5,419

Wisconsin Box Score

22-year-old southpaw Tyler Alexander threw 64 strikes among his 83 pitches.

Last year's 4th round pick, RHP Taylor Williams, turns 23 later this week. He's been able to handle the tandem system swimmingly -- it'd hurt the Rattler's playoff chances, but he's deserving of a chance to test his wares in Brevard County before season's end, as all his peripherals have been stellar.

This is Chris McFarland's age 21 season, and the second baseman has posted a .296/.343/.451 line. Truly an exciting season, and McFarland should start to prominently appear on Brewer prospect lists heading in 2015. Well done, young man...

I would suggest that the Maryvale box score not be posted. The Tribe whooped them but good.

The score was closer, but there wasn't much to enjoy in the Helena game, either.

Nothing personal to the guys, but the Helena roster is pretty uninspiring, and we shouldn't ever be saying that about the Rookie Advanced level, where normally we can still dream on numerous guys.

Final: @AZL Indians 19, AZL Brewers 1

Maryvale Box Score

Hey, RHP Milton Gomez pitched a scoreless 2nd inning --

AZL Indians Bottom of the 2nd

Simeon Lucas walks.

Victor Cabral grounds into a double play, third baseman Garrett Cooper to second baseman Daniel Leonardo to first baseman David Denson. Simeon Lucas out at 2nd.

Silento Sayles reaches on a throwing error by shortstop Jake Gatewood.

With Alexis Pantoja batting, Silento Sayles steals (6) 2nd base.

Alexis Pantoja grounds out, third baseman Garrett Cooper to first baseman David Denson.

It would be the only scoreless inning for A-Crew pitchers.

Gomez' 2.78 ERA is pretty, but he's allowed 11 unearned run in 22.2 innings.

We still don't know why RHP Andy Hillis, coming off a wonderful 2013 Helena debut, got a late start in Maryvale, but he's had a very tough go in two of his four outings, which we'll refer to as rehab of some sort.

Maryvale Game Log

The A-Crew managed only two hits and six walks.

6'6" Garrett Cooper (6th round, Auburn, 2013) is not a third baseman, three fielding errors here. That experiment probably won't end well. It appears Cooper's current Maryvale assignment is no longer a rehab stint for his quad, but a standard assignment, perhaps to begin the position switch test.

Pitching keeps Sounds in first

Mack Burke, The Tennessean

Coming off the All-Star break, you may not be able to discern the status of this Sounds squad from last season’s squad at the same time.

Although they have several players from last year’s team, the Sounds are 51-47 at the break and leads their division. At this time last season, they were sitting in the cellar with a 33-65 record.

Many things have gone right so far, leading to a superb level of consistency.

The pitching staff is the best in the Pacific Coast League thanks to a 3.54 team ERA. Mike Fiers (6-5, 2.52 ERA), Brad Mills (4-2, 1.56 ERA) and Milwaukee Brewers top prospect Jimmy Nelson (10-2, 1.46 ERA) have anchored the starting rotation for most of the season.

“You win championships with starting pitching, and our starting pitching has been the best in the league,” Manager Rick Sweet said.

Mills was traded to the Oakland Athletics on June 17, and Fiers and Nelson have each spent time at the big league level. Nelson was called up again — maybe for good — on July 11.

Johnnie Lowe (1-3, 5.46 ERA) and Alfredo Figaro (4-1, 4.08 ERA) have provided solid spot starts, while relievers Brent Leach (3-1, 3.27 ERA), Jeremy Jeffress (4-1, 1.58 ERA) and Dustin Molleken (2-2, 3.66 ERA) have been consistent and effective.

“Overall, the biggest thing … is executing pitches and keeping us in ball games,” pitching coach Fred Dabney said of the staff.

Over the past month, the offense has performed at a high level and, despite its season numbers, can be considered one of the best in the league.

“Right now, we’re probably swinging the best we have all year,” Sweet said. “We’re really starting to come around. I want to make sure we continue to stay aggressive and play good baseball. We have to stay focused.”

Veteran infielder Pete Orr hit .313 in his last 30 games going into Sunday’s game against Round Rock. Outfielder Sean Halton hit .297 in his last 10 games, but he has only five home runs on the season.

“Halton has had an incredible June and July,” hitting coach Bob Skube said. “He’s right at the .300 mark, he’s driving in runs and he hit a home run a few nights ago, and I anticipate him hitting a lot more home runs at this point.”

Hector Gomez, one of the best defensive shortstops in the PCL, was hitting .368 with two home runs and six runs batted in in his last 10 games. Infielder Eugenio Velez and outfielder Jeremy Hermida were hitting .303 and .286, respectively.

“I really like our lineup right now,” Skube said. “I’d match it up against anyone in the league right now.”

The veterans have played a big role in the team’s overall success, Skube said.

“The biggest difference in the team, with the new, winning atmosphere, is that these guys have come together as a team. They know what they are capable of doing, and they’re very aggressive and they don’t like losing,” he said. “… It’s a loose atmosphere, but it’s an intense atmosphere.”

The Sounds kick off the second half of the season on Thursday at Oklahoma City.

Final (10 Innings): Orem 10, Helena 7

Owlz rally late and win in extras, 10-7

By Dustin Daniel / Helena Brewers

The Orem Owlz (20-9) used a late surge to beat the Helena Brewers (11-18) for the fourth time this year, topping their hosts 10-7 in 10 innings.

The Owlz would jump out to a 4-0 lead early on a pair of two-run homers, one belonging to Michael Strentz and the other to Ryan Seiz.

Helena's starter Jorge Ortega would go six innings, giving up five runs on eight hits while striking out three.

After trailing 4-0, the Brewers would come up with three runs in the second and third to pull within one. All three of those would come in after the runners reached on walks. Justin Anderson struggled with accuracy in the start for Orem, giving up three runs in his three innings of work and walking three batters.

Helena would then score four runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 7-5 lead which would last all the way to the ninth. Brandon Moore was unable to pick up the save, giving up two runs in the inning including an RBI single to Michael Strentz to score Andrew Daniel and draw things even.

It was more Owlz in extras as Donnie Hissa (0-1) could not deliver in the tenth, giving up three runs to give Orem a healthy 10-7 lead.

Ronnie Muck (1-0) pitched three solid innings of relief picking up his first win of the season and striking out five. Helena is now 1-4 against Orem.

The Brewers and Owlz will face off in game two of their three-game series Thursday from Kindrick Field. First pitch from Helena is set for 7:05 p.m.

Helena Box Score

CF Brandon Diaz was 1-for-5 with a walk and 2 stolen bases. Helena as a team was 6-for-6 on stolen base attempts.

DH Greg McCall was 1-for-3 with a walk, his season BA sits at .346.

3B Tucker Neuhaus went 0-for-4 with a walk.

SS Luis Aviles hit a triple, which proved to be one of just two extra base hits for Helena.

RF Mitch Meyer was the only Brewers player with a multi-hit game, he ended up 2-for-5 on the evening.

Orem rallies to down Helena in 10th

By Curt Synness / Helena Independent Record

The Helena Brewers overcame three early home runs by the Orem Owlz to send the game into extra innings Wednesday, only to have the league-leading Owlz score three runs in the top of the 10th for a 10-7 win.

The loss at Kindrick Legion Field drops the last-place Brewers to 11-18 on the year, while Orem improves to 20-9.

The visitors jumped out to an early 5-3 lead, powered by a pair of 2-run homers by Michael Strentz and Ryan Seiz, and a solo shot by Caleb Adams.

The Brewers got even in the fifth frame when, with the bases loaded and one out, Alan Sharkey lofted a towering fly ball to right-center field. The ball banged high off the wall, bringing home Edgardo Rivera and Greg McCall to make it 5-all.

The hosts pulled ahead 7-5 in the sixth by playing a little Billy Ball.

Greg Munoz led off with and walk and proceeded to swipe second base. Brandon Diaz’s single put runners on the corners, and then Munoz scored on a double steal.

Next, Diaz went to third on a passed ball before racing plateward on Greg McCall’s sacrifice fly to center.

After Orem’s explosive start, Helena pitching shut out the Utah club for four innings before the Owlz knotted things up in the ninth to force extra innings.

Then in the top of the 10th, Seiz rapped a ground ball to second baseman Munoz, with Nathaniel Delgado scoring the go-ahead run on the ensuing error.

Orem pushed across two more runs for insurance, and then relief pitcher Ronald Muck set the Brewers down in order in their last at-bat to clinch the victory.

Helena was outhit 15-8, with Strentz and Andrew Daniel posting three hits apiece for the visitors.

The Brewers used three pitchers — Jorge Ortega, Brandon Moore and Donnie Hissa — with Hissa taking the loss.

One of the game’s best web gems occurred in the top of the fifth, after the Helena catcher threw out Raul Linares on an attempted steal of second. For the next out, Brewers third baseman Tucker Neuhaus scooped a hot smash by Orem’s Michael Strenz and, with one motion, got his man with a throw to first.

The two teams meet again today at Kindrick Legion at 7:05 for the second tilt of a three-game series.

After getting caught in a pickle on the base paths, the Brewers’ Brandon Diaz slides back into second just out of reach of Orem’s Andrew Daniel.

The Helena kids deserved better in this one.

They battled back and played pretty good ball, only to see it slip away due to poor bullpen management. Talk about "development", the 9th would have been an excellent time to bring in a closer. Instead Diggs threw Moore out there to start his third inning and left him in there when he had obviously lost his stuff. Discouraging.

Its not all bad, Williams and Diaz are worth watching and Demuth was pretty solid earlier in the year but I get your point. It would help if Neuhas could do anything; major disappointment this year. Pitching prospects outside of Williams are really non-existent. I see that Denson has played in a couple games down in Maryvale coming back from injury; perhaps they should bump him back up to Helena. That would make box scores more interesting at least

Neuhas has been a major dissapointment at this point especially at the plate but seems his defense is above the line, hopefully he can turn it up.

Chris McFarland's seems like a real potential down the line @ Second base we seem to be ok at that Position with Prospects .

Clint C has been really mashing the Ball which is very good to see came as advertised what about his Defense will he have to move out from behind the plate

as he moves forward.

Deeter has looked good in a closer type role. But he's a college guy who should do well. Sthervin Matos has hit well in Helena but if you include his stint in Maryvale, it's more pedestrian. With more games, some of these guys should be able to show more of what they can do.

Tomorrow is the last day to sign draftees right? Hopefully, they can get Kolton Mahoney that Mass has linked a couple of times. They are probably holding out on him and will maybe sign somebody else if they can't sign Mahoney?
