Huntsville's notes:

MORE FROM LAST NIGHT: The Stars were defeated for only the third time this season on a walk-off hit from their opponent. The Stars fell to 16-11 on the season in one-run games which is still the 2nd best record in one-run games in the Southern League. Only Jacksonville at 21-11 is better in games decided by one-run. Chattanooga is now 13-19 in one-run games, which is the 2nd worst one-run record in the league. The Lookouts 32 one-run games they’ve been involved in are the third most played in the league.

The Stars scored one of their four runs with two outs. In the series the Stars have now scored 15 of their 23 runs with two outs. The Stars did not homer yesterday, but still have homered six times in their last six games…

RHP Andy Moye allowed 0 ER in just 2 IP. Huntsville starters in their last 14 starts are 3-6 with a 5.81 ERA (45 ER, 69.2 IP)… Eric Marzec allowed a pair of solo home runs. Stars pitchers have now given up nine home runs in the last eight games. They have now allowed 79 home runs on the season which is the most allowed in the Southern League, eight more than the next team Jacksonville…In the month of July, the Huntsville pitching staff has the second highest ERA in the Southern League at 4.62. The Stars, Birmingham and Tennessee are the only three teams to have a team ERA above 4.00 in the month…

In the last 13 games the Stars offense is batting .266 (131-492). Out of the 131 hits, only 38 have gone for extra base hits … Hainley Statia went 1-4 with an RBI single which continued his excellent hitting against Chattanooga. In the series, Statia is 5-11 with 4 RBI. On the season, Statia is batting .462 with two home runs and 10 RBI in eight games against the Lookouts. All three of this 3-RBI games have come against Chattanooga…

Nick Ramirez recorded a pinch-hit single in the 7th, his first pinch-hit at bat of the year. The single extended his hit streak to six straight games. He has now hit safely in twelve out of his last thirteen games…D’Vontrey Richardson did not play yesterday but went 2-3 with two RBI before coming out of the game in the sixth when he was hit by a pitch on Friday. He has hit safely in 13 of his last 18 games. In those 18 games, he is hitting .344 (21-61 with 2 HR and 8 RBI)…Kentrail Davis returned to the lineup snapping an 0-16 skid with an infield single in the 4th inning. Davis batted 6th in the order. This season Davis has batted first, second, third, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth and has best results have come out of the leadoff spot where he’s a .301 batter with an on base percentage of .421 in 30 games.

Josh Prince went 1-5 with an RBI single. He is now 16 for his last 56 (.286) at the plate... Nick Shaw went 1-4 with an RBI single. In the second half of the season through 17 games, Shaw is batting .340 with 6 RBI compared to just .229 in the first half of the season. Shaw has also been a better hitter when he plays 2B. As a 2B, he is batting .419 in 31 at bats compared to batting .229 with 192 at bats when he plays shortstop…

Rattlers Rock River Bandits 8-4

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Clint Coulter is greeted at the plate after his fourth inning grand slam against the Quad Cities River Bandits on Monday at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. (Ann Mollica/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers)

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers got a grand slam from Clint Coulter and defeated the Quad Cities River Bandits 8-4 on Monday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The win was the third straight for the Rattlers and gave them their first season series win over the River Bandits since 2008.

Quad Cities (47-46 overall, 12-12 second half) scored first. Chase McDonald hit a two-out, solo home run to right-center in the top of the second inning for a 1-0 lead.

Wisconsin (49-44, 13-11) came right back in the bottom of the second. Paul Eshleman doubled to right to drive in Rafael Neda from second base to tie the game.

Johnny Davis started the bottom of the third inning with a single. A balk moved him to second base and a slow grounder to short allowed him to take third base. Michael Ratterree lined a pitch through the drawn-in infield for an RBI single and a 2-1 lead.

The Timber Rattlers padded their lead in the bottom of the fourth against left-handed knuckleballer Blaine Sims. Eshleman, Steve Halcomb, and Davis had consecutive singles with one out to load the bases. Ratterree allowed a 3-2 knuckler to go by for ball four to force in Eshleman for a 3-1 lead. Coulter also worked the count to 3-2 and launched another knuckler to left for a grand slam and a 7-1 lead.

The slam was the second of the season for Coulter, who also hit one at South Bend on April 12. Coulter is the third Rattler to hit two grand slams in a season. The other two were Chris Snelling (2000) and Michael Cox (2004).

Wisconsin has hit four grand slams this season to tie the franchise record. Wisconsin also hit four grand slams in 1997, 2000, 2002, and 2004.

In the sixth, Taylor Brennan hit his eleventh home run of the season, a solo shot off the video board in left-center field. That put the Rattlers up 8-1.

Barrett Astin was cruising after the home run by McDonald. But in the seventh inning Quad Cities had runners at first and third with two outs. Brett Booth hit what appeared to be a routine fly ball to right on a 1-2 pitch from Astin. The ball kept carrying in a sudden gust of wind and blew out of the ballpark for a three-run homer to cut the lead to 8-4.

Astin would get out of the inning as a sudden rain shower fell on the stadium. He tossed seven innings to match his professional career high for a single game, walked three, and struck out five to be in line for the win.

Clint Terry took over in the top of the eighth in the rain and pitched two scoreless innings, allowed one hit, and struck out four to close out the River Bandits. The Sun was shining again by the time the final out was recorded.

Davis went 4-for-5 with a stolen base and two runs scored to pace Wisconsin's 13-hit attack.

Wisconsin won the season series from the River Bandits with nine wins out of the sixteen games played. The Timber Rattlers now own the tiebreaker over Quad Cities in case the teams tie for a second half Western Division playoff spot.

The Timber Rattlers are off on Tuesday before returning to action on Wednesday at home against the Bowling Green Hot Rods. Tyler Alexander (5-4, 4.22) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers. Ben Griset (0-5, 4.23) is set to start for the Hot Rods. Game time is 7:05pm.

The first 1,000 fans to attend the game will receive an Oyo mini figure of former Timber Rattler and current Milwaukee Brewer Scooter Gennett from Principal Financial Dreams Tour. The Principal Financial Dreams Tour will also be out front to meet fans and give the tour.

Plus, Wednesday is a WIXX Bang for Your Buck Night. Enjoy Cher-Make hotdogs, Pepsi products, and Miller beer for $1 as the Rattlers take on the Bowling Green Hot Rods.

If you can't make it out to the ballpark, there are many ways to follow the action. The television broadcast is on MyNew32's Sports Showdown starting at 7:00pm. The radio broadcast is on AM1280, WNAM and IHeartRadio beginning with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:45pm. The game is also available for subscribers to MiLB.TV.

Wisconsin Boxscore

Barrett Astin looked pretty decent, he was around the plate much of the day. He was at 81 pitches when he came back out for the 7th and gave up the 3HR. He threw the most pitches of any inning in the 7th and got burned leaving the ball up. I would have thought the call to the bullpen would have been made after the 6th. I'll put Astin's inning by inning velocities in another post. We left when the rain started to come down so I didn't see Clint Terry pitch in person.

Johnny Davis had 4 legitimate hits, no bunt base hits, 3 were line drives through the infield. Paul Eshlemen (3-4, 2B) had a nice day at the plate and a CS as well. Taylor Brennan (2-3,2B,HR,2 BB) also had a monster day, his HR hit half way up the score board, it was a no doubter off the bat.

Clint Coulter made the best contact he's made in a while, every ball he hit in play he hit well, his HR was actually the least well struck HR I've seen from him. It creeped over the LF wall by the foul pole, normally his HRs are no doubters, but it was a huge hit for him, hopefully it gets him back on track.

The opposing lefty, the knucklballer Blaine Sims, threw 1 pitch at 80, everything else was 74 or below.

Brandon Diaz doubles off 1st Rounder Kyle Freeland in the 1st. Comes around on a Rubio single.

We will cover this in a little more detail later, but the Helena Crew had 3 hits in the 1st inning and scored the first run that 8th overall draft pick LHP Kyle Freeland has given up as a professional (only his second outing). It proved to be the only run Freeland gave up in 3.0 IP tonight.

Garcia lifts Grand Junction to victory over Brewers

By Helena Independent Record

Grand Junction first baseman Henry Garcia was 3 for 4 with a pair of home runs and six RBIs, and the Rockies defeated the Helena Brewers 13-5 Monday at Suplizio Field in Colorado.

Helena starting pitcher Devin Williams (1-4) was hung with the loss, giving up six runs on seven hits through 3 1/3 innings. Grand Junction reliever Craig Schlitter (1-1) earned the win after throwing three innings of one-hit ball while striking out four.

The Pioneer League squads had a home run derby of their own going on Monday, as the two teams combined for four in the contest. First baseman Sthervin Matos and third baseman Tucker Neuhaus both hit homers for the Brewers, who have today off before returning to Helena for a seven-game homestand. The Brewers host Orem for three games, beginning Wednesday at 7:05 p.m., before four against Grand Junction.

Catcher Greg McCall and second baseman Gregory Munoz led the Brewers offensively Monday, each with a 3-for-4 effort. It was a hit parade, as Grand Junction finished with 13 hits and Helena had 11. The Rockies also stole four bases.

The Brewers (11-17) struck first, but then came 10 unanswered runs by the Rockies (16-12). Grand Junction led 10-1, before Helena plated four runs in the seventh inning.

But it was too little too late for the Brewers, who went 2-5 on the Southern Division road swing.

Final: Huntsville7, @Chattanooga 1, completed early, rain

Stars Claim Rubber Match

Steve Jarnicki, Huntsville Stars

Chattanooga, TN - The Huntsville Stars defeated the Chattanooga Lookouts 7-1 Monday night to claim the rubber match of their five-game series with the Lookouts at AT&T Field. The Stars won three out of five from the Lookouts. The game was called in the top of the seventh with one out due to heavy rain and lightning.

The Stars jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning against Lookouts starter Raydel Sanchez (2-6). Josh Prince doubled high off the left center field wall scoring Brent Suter, who also doubled.

Nick Ramirez grounded out to second scoring Prince making it 2-0.

The Lookouts cut the Stars lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the third. Noel Cuevas doubled down the left field line scoring Darnell Sweeney.

The Stars added to their lead in the top of the seventh inning. They recorded four straight hits and it started with Erik Komatsu hammering a leadoff home run over the right field wall to make it 3-1. It was Komatsu's first longball of the year with the Stars, and 4th overall in 2014 in 164 at-bats.

Shea Vucinich then tripled. Yadiel Rivera scored Vucinich on a single to left field. Two batters later Nick Shaw added a two-run single extending the Stars lead to 6-1.

With the bases loaded and one out, Lookouts RHP Juan Gonzalez walked Adam Weisenburger forcing in Shaw, making it 7-1 Stars.

The Stars batted around in the seventh. Komatsu came to the plate and was trailing 0-1 in the count with one out, when the game was delayed due to heavy winds and lightning. Heavy rains came down soon thereafter and the game was officially called after a 33-minute delay.

Suter turned in a quality start for the Stars, his second straight. The left-hander tossed six innings of four hit baseball allowing one unearned run. He also struck out six. Suter earned the win and improved to 9-6 on the season.

The Stars (11-13, 57-37) will return to Huntsville and have the day off on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the Stars will host the Tennessee Smokies, the Double-A Affiliate of the Chicago Cubs at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars will have RHP Drew Gagnon (5-4, 3.26) on the mound. Tennessee will feature RHP Matt Loosen (4-3, 5.47). The game can be heard starting at 6:15 pm CDT on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM and wtkiradio.com.

Huntsville Box Score

Second strong start for Brent Suter after an extended rough stretch; Suter can rake, the RH bat is up to .273 with a .668 OPS in 24 plate appearances. Nick Shaw has an OPS north of 1.000 in July's 31 AB's, he really needs to take a snapshot of his current MiLB page for framing. Contributions up and down the lineup here, pretty box score...

What is going on with Devin Williams?

Five errors didn't help the situation.

I remember watching some Helena games a few years back and thinking about how bad the defense was. Rookie ball!

I kind of felt bad for the pitchers, as their numbers got inflated by the lack of D.
