It's like on the last day before the break, these guys have realized "hey, I don't have to swing as hard as possible to get base hits"

Just watching the swings, it's like there's a totally different approach at the plate from everyone. Unbelievable.

I was thinking the same thing. You wish that you could keep that approach all year - even though the results won't always be there. Homeruns can be hard to come by.. and they've hit one solo one today. 8 runs by hitting the ball (for the most part) the other way is impressive.

I think a lot of us are thinking this today. Hopefully the players are seeing it, and realizing it too.

So we need our most used reliever to pitch in a 8 run game.... To get some work???

In a game where the starter was at 79 pitches through 7 innings........

Maybe he wants to give Smith an inning before the break to help him get his groove back. While also resting Peralta in a game in the bag. makes perfect sense to me.

No, it doesn't make any sense. Smith isn't just our most used reliever, he's on pace to tie the team record for relief appearances in a season. He's going to break down before the season is over with if they keep pitching him, literally(am I am using that term correctly) every other day. Going into today he's on pace for 83 games. Team record is 83 games. He doesn't need more work, he needs more rest.

What would you guys think if your highest paid player led the league in GIDP, batted .260 in the 3 hole with half as many HR's as the SS and was a butcher in the outfield?

Just wondering.

Braun has an .850-ish OPS, leads the team in RBI's, and has done this while being injured most of the year..... and the vitriol I see aimed at him on this board is pretty incredible. I can't imagine what would be said about him if he was putting up Holliday-like numbers.

LOL. It would pretty bad.

I would say the game is still in question sadly lol. I only turned the game on to see the last out and of course they're stretching it out

OK, I guess that settles it as fact. You must be right.

I would be wondering if it is a slump or if he is truly going into decline. Would also start to think he should be moved down in the order, at some point. Holiday is 34 years old now, a pretty typical age for hitters to start declining. He is in year 5 of a 7 year contract meaning the Cards are on the hook through 2016.

He's been steadily slumping since he got here. The former MVP for the Rockies has YET to lead the Cardinals in ANY positive catagory, and the GM refuses to have him moved down in the order. It's fairly infuriating and a constant topic of conversation in St. Louis.

Game over thankfully! See you guys on All Star day. ;)

Apparently the Carlos Gomez #FAIL in breaking the bat over his knee was the capitulation of our struggles? Nice to see us finally dish it out on somebody else, division is too close for my liking but feels good to enter the break in the lead after what has taken place lately.

Elian Herrera is now hitting .276 for the season and .328 as a left-handed hitter. What?

Smart move switching Braun into his three spot and Lucroy to fifth. Braun is most consistent hitter at the moment, and Lucroy is in a mini-slump.

Peralta was experiencing cramping in his legs, so they took him out as a precaution per rr in the post game.

Didn't get to see the game but was following it on my phone, was nice to see Peralta put a strong outing after his recent struggles.

Amazing that Brauny is only 12 behind the league leader in RBI. He's missed a bunch of time, and has played all year with multiple nagging injuries.

Braun is a remarkable player and it is rather sad how he tainted his reputation and is now so vilified by so many. :(
