Fascinating brief glimpse of Mormon mission life within this excellent feature article on Brewers unsigned 23rd round BYU RHP Kolton Mahoney, who has been dominating on the Cape this summer.

Reads as though there's a chance he could be signed, although he's preparing for a return to BYU as well.

I'm reaching out to the Brewers today to see if I should make the trip locally here to catch up with Mahoney on Wednesday.

'Tees rally in ninth to walk-off Charlotte, 2-1

Manatees score two runs in the ninth for their first walk-off win of the year

Brevard County center fielder Tyrone Taylor, seen here in a game from earlier this season, hit a double and scored the game-tying run in the Manatees walk-off 2-1 win over the Charlotte Stone Crabs on Saturday night at Space Coast Stadium. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

VIERA, Fla. - It took until July 12, but the Brevard County Manatees finally recorded their first walk-off win of the season with a 2-1 victory over the Charlotte Stone Crabs on Saturday night at Space Coast Stadium.

It all started with Tyrone Taylor in the bottom of the ninth inning. Trailing 1-0, Taylor smacked a deep fly ball to straight away center field. Ariel Soriano chased it all the way to the warning track, but the ball landed over his head for a lead-off double.

The next batter, Cameron Garfield, wasted no time in tying the ballgame. The 'Tees catcher demolished a ball to roughly the same spot as Taylor. Once again, the ball tailed over the head of Soriano. Taylor scored easily and Garfield motored into third with an RBI triple.

Stone Crabs reliever Kevin Brandt then issued an intentional walk to Victor Roache. With runners now at first and third, Brandt elected to pitch to Mike Garza.

The move paid off, as Garza hit a slow tapper back to the mound. Roache advanced to second, but Garza was retired for out number one.

Instead of giving Alfredo Rodriguez a free pass to load the bases and create a force at every base, Brandt chose to pitch to him, as well. With the infield in, Rodriguez hit a ground ball into the hole between third and short. Leonardo Reginatto made a backhand stop to keep the ball in the infield, but his throw to the plate was high and Garfield slid in safely to score the game-winning run.

The walk-off victory was the first by the Manatees (12-7 second half, 48-37 overall) since T.J. Mittelstaedt hit a walk-off home run to defeat the Jupiter Hammerheads on June 10 of last year.

Charlotte (7-16, 38-52) grabbed the lead in the eighth inning, but not without some controversy.

With two outs, reliever Stephen Peterson faced off against Josh Sale. The left-handed hitter poked a high fly ball to deep right-center field that Taylor chased all the way to the wall. He leaped to make the catch, but came up short, as he banged into the padding. Michael Reed scurried to get the ball back into the infield, but Sale was already standing at third.

The play created confusion, with both teams unsure of whether or not the ball cleared the fence. Base umpire Josh Winter took charge and ruled that it was indeed a home run. Brevard County manager Joe Ayrault came out to argue the call, but it was to no avail. Ayrault was ejected and the Stone Crabs had a 1-0 lead.

Both starters were phenomenal, but neither factored into the decision.

After two-plus weeks of rest, Hobbs Johnson (9-6, 3.01 ERA) showed no rust and was stellar for the Manatees. The left-hander shutout the Stone Crabs over six innings and allowed just two base-hits. He struck out four and did not walk a batter.

Unfortunately, Johnson's night ended prematurely. After throwing his warmup pitches in the top of the seventh, he was removed from the ballgame with apparent heat prostration.

Charlotte's starter Reinaldo Lopez (4-4, 3.69) matched Johnson every step of the way. He yielded just four hits and two walks over seven scoreless frames.

The Manatees will look to ride the momentum of tonight's victory into another matchup with the Stone Crabs tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 5:35 p.m. at Space Coast Stadium. Damien Magnifico (5-5, 3.95) will try and shake off a rough outing in his last start against fellow right-hander Marcus Jensen (3-3, 3.05).

Stars Come Back On Lookouts

Steve Jarnicki, Huntsville Stars

Chattanooga, TN - The Huntsville Stars jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and had to come back late to defeat the Chattanooga Lookouts 5-4 Saturday night at AT&T Field in Chattanooga.

Joey Paciorek gave the Stars a 3-0 lead in the first inning on his two-out three run homer against Chris Reed.

Chattanooga responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first against Huntsville starter Jed Bradley.

Scott Shebler singled into right field on a 3-2 pitch scoring Darnell Sweeney. Daniel Mayora also hit into a 6-4-3 double play scoring Noel Cuevas trimming the Stars lead to 3-2.

The Lookouts tied the game in the bottom of the second inning. Alex Liddi led off the inning with a triple against the right field wall. The next batter, Chris O'Brien, then scored Liddi on a groundout to shortstop.

Chattanooga grabbed their first lead of the game in the bottom of the third. Sweeney led off with a walk. He advanced to second on a throwing error by catcher Adam Wesienburger on a pick-off attempt.

Sweeney later scored when Scott Shebler grounded out to shortstop giving Chattanooga a 4-3 advantage.

The Stars came back late in the game against Chattanooga reliever Juan Gonzalez (1-6). In the top of the seventh inning, Gonzalez walked Greg Hopkins. Yadiel Rivera followed by reaching on a bunt single.

With the bases loaded and one out, Weisenburger produced a sacrifice fly scoring Hopkins, tying the game at 4-4.

With Rivera at third base and Josh Prince at second and Hainley Statia at the plate, Gonzalez delivered a pitch that was low and off the catcher's glove. Rivera alertly broke for the plate scoring on a passed ball by O'Brien giving the Stars a 5-4 lead.

Tim Dillard pitched scoreless seventh and eighth innings for the Stars out of the bullpen.

David Goforth pitched the ninth for the Stars and recorded his Southern League best 18th save when he got O'Brien to fly out to centerfielder Erik Komatsu to end the game.

Bradley improved to 2-4 on the season as he earned the win. He pitched six innings allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits.

The Stars (11-12, 57-36) lead the Lookouts (9-14,35-58) 2-1 in their five game series. Game four will be Sunday afternoon. The Stars will have RHP Andy Moye (4-2, 4.70) on the hill. Chattanooga will feature RHP Andres Santiago (2-5, 5.00) on the mound. The game can be heard starting at 1:00 pm CDT on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM and wtkiradio.com.

Huntsville Box Score

Jed Bradley posted a 9-to-1 GB/FB ratio here, and fanned five while walking two. If you compare to his 2012-13 numbers, you'll see he's getting more than twice the ground balls this season.

Josh Prince reached base four times, including thrice by base on balls. The 26-year-old stole his 28th base in 36 attempts, but was also picked off once.

Still at 21 games over .500, it's been a pleasure to follow the results for the Stars. If only the club was truly prospect-laden, particularly from a position player perspective. We await Mitch Haniger's return (elbow)...

Final: Grand Junction 13, Helena 2

Grand Junction rocks the Brewers 13-2

By Dustin Daniel / Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers (10-16) were trounced by the Grand Junction Rockies (15-11) 13-2 in their series opener from Suplizio Field in Colorado.

J.B. Kole got the start for Helena, pitching a solid first inning before falling apart in the second.

Kole (0-1) gave up a leadoff walk, hit two batters and allowed four hits for seven runs in the second before being pulled. It was the second highest scoring inning the Brewers have allowed this season.

The Brewers would score the first of their two runs in the third when Luis Aviles led off with a single. He advanced to third on an Eric Williams base hit and scored on a Gregory Munoz grounder. Aviles was 2-for-4 in the ballgame with a double and two runs scored.

The Rockies added to their lead with six runs over a three-inning span including four runs in the sixth.

Max George led Grand Junction offensively hitting for the cycle. He was 4-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI. He is the first player since June of 2011 to hit for the cycle in the Pioneer League for the Rockies.

Despite keeping scoring to a minimum, Grand Junction would put six pitchers on the hill. Logan Norris (3-0) got the win pitching two innings of shutout baseball and allowing just one hit.

The Brewers and Rockies will face off in game two of their three-game series Sunday from Suplizio Field. First pitch is set for 4:05 p.m.

Rattlers win a wild one over the River Bandits

Wisconsin led 8-1, wins 9-8 with run in bottom of the eighth

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers squandered a big lead, but managed to defeat the Quad Cities River Bandits 9-8 on Saturday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Taylor Brennan went 2-for-2 and drove in four runs for the Timber Rattlers, who won despite being outhit 9-6 in the game.

Wisconsin (47-44 overall, 11-11 second half) took advantage of three walks by Quad Cities starting pitcher Jandel Gustave in the bottom of the first inning to score three runs. Johnny Davis drew a walk to start the inning. Michael Ratterree and Clint Coulter each drew walks with one out to load the bases. Gustave got a strikeout for the second out of the inning, but threw a wild pitch to let Davis score. Taylor Brennan followed with a bloop single to right that drove in two runs for a 3-0 lead.

The Timber Rattlers added to their lead in the third inning. Ratterree drew a one out walk and Coulter singled to right on a hit-and-run to put runners on the corners. Brennan doubled to left to drive in two more runs. Then, Brennan stole third and scored when the throw sailed into left field and the Rattlers were up 6-0.

Quad Cities (47-44, 12-10) got their first run in the fourth inning. Chase McDonald singled to drive in Tyler White from second with one out, but was thrown out trying to stretch his hit into a double. Rattlers starter Anthony Banda escaped the inning without allowing more damage.

Chris McFarland and Michael Ratterree had back-to-back RBI singles in the bottom of the fourth inning to push the Wisconsin lead out to 8-1.

Banda walked Jake Rodriguez, the leadoff batter, in the top of the fifth, a passed ball sent him to second and an errant pickoff throw by Banda to second allowed Rodriguez to take third base. Brett Phillips and Thomas Lindauer had back-to-back RBI doubles with one out to make it 8-3 and drive Banda out of the game. Chris Razo came out of the bullpen and got the final two outs of the inning.

Razo went back out for the sixth and gave up a double to McDonald on a routine fly ball to medium right-center that dropped in for a hit. A passed ball with the next batter up sent McDonald to third, but Razo got the next two outs on strikeouts. Razo struck out James Ramsay to end the inning, but the ball eluded Coulter for his third passed ball of the game. The dropped third strike allowed McDonald to score and Ramsay to reach to keep the inning going.

Phillips doubled again to put runners on second and third with two outs. Razo threw a wild pitch to let Ramsay score. Then, an error on a grounder to second allowed Phillips to score and the Rattlers lead was down to 8-6.

Wisconsin had two on with no outs in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn't add any insurance. It would cost them.

Victor Diaz, who had tossed a scoreless seventh, walked Phillips with one out in the eighth. Two errors on one play off a grounder to third by Thomas Lindauer put runners at the corners with one out. Diaz struck out Ronnie Mitchell for the second out.

Tyler White worked the count to 3-2 against Diaz and lined a double to right-center. Phillips and Lindauer scored to tie the game 8-8.

Quad Cities brought in knuckleball pitcher Blaine Sims in the bottom of the eighth inning. McFarland reached on an error, the fifth of the night on the River Bandits, with one out. McFarland stole second and the River Bandits walked Ratterree intentionally. Paul Eshleman's grounder to second wasn't handled cleanly and all the River Bandits could get was the second out of the inning at first base.

McFarland scored the go-ahead run when a knuckler from Sims got back to the screen with Dustin DeMuth at the plate and the Rattlers were up 9-8.

Diaz didn't allow the River Bandits any chances in the ninth as he retired them 1-2-3 to close out the game.

Both defenses committed five errors. The five runs scored against Wisconsin's bullpen were unearned. There were five wild pitches - three by Bandits pitchers and two by Rattlers pitchers. The pitchers combined for 14 walks and 19 strikeouts in the game.

Quad Cities went 4-for-17 with runners in scoring position while the Rattlers were 4-for-15 with runners in scoring position.

Game three of the series is Sunday afternoon. Zach Quintana (2-4, 5.69) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Edison Frias (5-4, 5.92) is scheduled to start for the River Bandits. Game time is 1:05pm.

Wisconsin Boxscore

I watched this game on the DVR and it was literally like watching a high school game, the T-Rats even won in a high school manner. Anthony Banda didn't get ahead of many hitters but it didn't hurt him until the 4th.

Chris Razo was really solid, in case you missed it above the defense gave Cedar Rapids 6 outs in the 6th, it was awful. Razo hung in there and kept throwing strikes though.

Victor Diaz is going to be a player to watch with Taylor Williams down the road. His command isn't great, but his stuff is above average and there's always a chance Diaz will locate better as he matures.

Clint Coulter was awful defensively, so bad that Erickson replaced him for the 7th. Paul Eshleman isn't a great defensive catcher either, between them they let 2 strike 3s get right through them for PBs which extended the innings, but I thought Matt was correct to pull Coulter.

I really liked the approach at the plate from Michael Ratterree and Taylor Brennan in this game.

Opposing starter Jandel Gustave is actually fairly nasty he just has no idea where the ball is going. His FB was 94-97 and his off speed was pretty decent.

Nashville Sounds

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/2/0/0/84441200/cuts/MPS_3825_Large_rhjw75c1_2iec7hmb.jpg

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Fueled by Caleb Gindl's go-ahead home run in the bottom of the third and 6 1/3 scoreless innings from the Sounds bullpen, the first-place Nashville Sounds (51-46) took down the Round Rock Express, 5-3, at Greer Stadium in front of 8,441 fans on Saturday night.

Sounds pitchers overwhelmed opposing hitters throughout the evening, tying a season high with 15 strikeouts.

Down 3-1 with one out in the third, Gindl took an 0-1 pitch over the left field wall for his seventh homer of the year, giving Nashville its first lead of the night. The Sounds got their first run of the night when the previous batter, Eugenio Velez, knocked in Hector Gomez with an RBI single.

The Express jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top half of the third on Sounds starter Johnnie Lowe. Helped by a pair of errors and four hits, Round Rock knocked Lowe out of the game after just 2 2/3 innings, but reliever Jose De La Torre (1-0) got control of the game shortly after. In his longest relief outing of the year, De La Torre went 3 1/3 innings, striking out seven and allowing just one hit to earn his first win with Nashville.

Arcenio Leon continued the good vibes out of the bullpen with two clean innings and striking out three. Closer Jeremy Jeffress then took over in the ninth and held Round Rock scoreless to pick up his fourth save of the season.

Jason Rogers gave the Sounds an important insurance run in the bottom of the eighth with his second home run of the year. Round Rock starter Justin Germano (3-9) went the distance despite the loss, pitching an eight-inning complete game and allowing five earned runs on seven hits.

The Sounds will go for their second series sweep of the season Sunday at 6:35 p.m. RHP Taylor Jungmann (4-5, 5.37) get the start for Nashville against RHP Jerome Williams, who is making his debut with the Express. Jeff Hem will have the call on 102.5 The GAME.

Nashville Boxscore

Jose De La Torre was absolutely on fire, what a performance. One would think that Jeremy Jeffress is going to get the call at some point, maybe this time he can stick.
