"Tonight’s interview is this week’s installment of “Mondays with the Manager” with Sounds skipper Rick Sweet, who discusses the Sounds’ recent hot hitting, including Jeremy Hermida and Sean Halton, the offense’s balance in the lineup, the addition of first baseman Matt Clark and the injuries to Hunter Morris and Dustin Molleken."

By the way, in this Monday audio, Sweet briefly discusses catcher Shawn Zarraga and the need to develop his defensive skills (blocking balls, etc.).

Nashville --

Shortstop Hector Gomez, who went 2-for-4 to extend his season-best hitting streak to seven games, broke up a scoreless deadlock in the top of the sixth when his one-out RBI single followed Elian Herrera's hustle double on a ball up the middle. Gomez is batting .433 (13-for-30) over his hit streak.

AUDIO: Hector Gomez Go-Ahead RBI Single

Xavier Scruggs led off the Memphis ninth with a single and advanced to second when Greg Garcia laid down a bunt that was mishandled by first baseman Matt Clark, allowing both runners to remain safe on the play. Pinch-hitter Jermaine Curtis followed with a ground ball deep in the hole at second base, where Pete Orr attempted to make a play at the plate but his throw was late as Scruggs hustled in with the tying run. After an Audry Perez grounder erased Garcia at the plate, Luis Mateo ended the game with an RBI infield single that gave Memphis a 2-1 win.

Miscellaneous notes from Mr. Jarnicki in Huntsville from Monday's postgame:

With the 6-2 win, that was the most lopsided win the Stars have had since beating Pensacola 6-2 on June 23rd. Their last five wins all had been by three runs or less…With the rubber match tonight, the Stars have only lost back to back series once this year (May 31st-June 9th at Jackson vs Mobile)…

LHP Brent Suter gave the Huntsville starting staff their first win in their last nine starts. In that stretch, starters are 1-5 with a 6.46 ERA (33 ER, 46 IP). Stars pitchers have given up five home runs in the last three games. They have now allowed 75 home runs on the season which is the most home runs allowed in the Southern League, nine more than the next team Jacksonville.

In the month of July, the Huntsville pitching staff has the highest ERA in the Southern League at 4.57. The Stars and Tennessee are the only two teams to have a team ERA above 4.00 in the month…The last eight starters the Stars have faced have posted a 3.15 ERA (16 ER in their 45.66 IP).

Brandon Macias, who got promoted from High-A Brevard County on Sunday, made his Double-A debut and produced an RBI single in his second at bat. That extended his hit streak to nine straight games which has carried over from Brevard County to Huntsville…Greg Hopkins hit a home run in the 6th inning. That was the first Stars home run since D’Vontrey Richardson’s two run homer in the 3rd inning on June 28th against Montgomery. In the last nine games the Stars offense is batting .262 (87-332). Out of the 87 hits, only 24 have gone for extra bases

Richardson went 1-4 with a two-run double. He has hit safely in ten of his last fifteen games. In that run, he is hitting .308 (16-52 with 1 HR and 5 RBI)…Kentrail Davis did not play last night which ended a string of him batting leadoff in twenty ninth consecutive games. In his games as the leadoff man, he is (34-110, .309) with an on base percentage of .434.

Since the Stars clinched the 1st half championship they’ve gone 16-15.

AUDIO via Jeff Hem's blog --

"Tonight’s interview is with new Sounds first baseman Matt Clark, who has played in three games with the Sounds after signing with the Brewers as a minor league free agent. The former LSU Tiger played in the Padres system for several years, including two very successful years at Tucson in ’11 and ’12, where he worked with current Sounds hitting coach Bob Skube. Clark then played in Japan in 2013 and, after finding out late in the winter he wouldn’t be going back to Japan, signed with the Mets in January and went to Double-A. The Brewers signed him last week when they confirmed Sounds first baseman Hunter Morris had suffered a fracture in his right wrist and would be missing several weeks."

26-year-old Nashville SS Hector Gomez has 31 extra-base hits (18 doubles, three triples, 10 HR's) in 281 AB's.

24-year-old Milwaukee SS Jean Segura has 15 extra-base hits (seven doubles, four triples, four HR's) in 327 AB's.

Alec Dopp via Twitter:

Jean Segura has now gone 58 consecutive plate appearances without an extra-base hit.

Please don't read too much into that, not suggesting anything radical, more to point out Gomez' nice season from a power standpoint (and Gomez' only 15 walks).

Final: Brevard County 2, Lakeland 9

Flying Tigers trounce 'Tees in opener, 9-2

By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees

Brevard County left fielder Victor Roache - seen here in a game from earlier this season - turned in his second multi-homer game of the season with a pair of long balls against the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Tuesday night. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

LAKELAND, Fla. - Despite a big two home run performance by Victor Roache, the Brevard County Manatees fell to the Lakeland Flying Tigers, 9-2 at Joker Marchant Stadium on Tuesday night.

Roache, who had a three home run performance for Brevard County (10-6 second half, 46-36 overall) against Clearwater on May 4, had another magical performance tonight.

Trailing 2-0 in the top of the fifth, Roache uncorked on a pitch from Lakeland starter Kevin Eichhorn (5-2, 2.40 ERA). The Milwaukee Brewers first round pick from 2012 crushed it deep to left field. The ball ended up on the concrete walkway behind the berm in left field, as the 'Tees trimmed the lead to one.

Now down 9-1 in the seventh, Roache delivered again. This time against reliever Tyler Clark, Roache blasted another ball to deep left. This one didn't carry as far, but still landed a quarter of the way up the berm for another solo shot.

Unfortunately for the Manatees, that was all the excitement the game featured. Lakeland's (4-14, 46-39) bats exploded for nine runs in the game's middle three innings to snap the team's 10-game losing streak.

It all went downhill in the fourth, when Major League rehabber Andy Dirks picked up the Flying Tigers' first hit with a single to center. After a sacrifice bunt and another single put runners at the corners, things began to get wacky.

With one out, Connor Harrell hit a tapper back to Manatees starter Jorge Lopez (8-4, 3.26). The right-hander spun and threw towards second base, but neither shortstop Orlando Arcia nor second baseman Nathan Orf was at the bag yet. Orf finally received the ball and stepped on the base for the force, but his rushed relay throw to first was high and Harrell was safe. Instead of an inning-ending double play, Lakeland was on the board with a 1-0 lead.

The craziness was not over, as Lance Durham followed with a single to right. With Austin Green at the plate, Durham broke for second base. As Cameron Garfield threw down to second, Harrell broke for the plate. Orf's throw back to the dish was late and Harrell slid in safely with a swipe of home to extend the lead to two.

The Flying Tigers attack did not stop there, as they tacked four more runs in the fifth on a RBI single by Jared Reaves and a two-run triple by Curt Powell, who later came around to score on a wild pitch.

Lakeland finally put the game out of reach with a pair of home runs off reliever Martin Viramontes in the sixth. Durham cracked a solo shot that hugged the right field foul pole for his third blast of the year. Three batters later, Reaves unloaded and drilled a pitch three-quarters of the way up the berm in left to extend Lakeland's lead to 9-1.

Brevard did have its fair share of opportunities to score, but could not tally the big base knock.

After Roache's blast in the fifth, Brevard County loaded the bases with one out. Arcia hit a shallow fly ball to center that was tracked down by Harrell. Alfredo Rodriguez, who reached on a single, was then gunned out at the plate, as he tried to tag from third to score the tying run.

Following another Roache long ball in the seventh, the Manatees missed another opportunity to capitalize. With runners at first and second and one out, Orf hit a soft flair towards first. James Robbins made the catch coming in and tagged out Jose Sermo, who was going back to first after taking his lead, for an inning-ending double play.

The Manatees' bats certainly got enough hits, as the team recorded 10 base knocks. Four players - Orf, Roache, Rodriguez and Sermo - all recorded two-hit nights. However, Roache's two homers were the only extra base-hits the 'Tees recorded in the ballgame.

Lopez took just his second loss since May 9. The Puerto Rico native was phenomenal through three innings, before things fell apart in the fourth. Lopez retired the first nine he faced and struck out four batters on just 30 pitches. However, in his final two innings, he allowed a season-high six runs on seven hits. He finished the night with one walk and six strike outs.

Eichhorn picked up his first win against the Manatees in 2014. The right-hander allowed just one run on five hits, walked two and struck out three over five innings of work.

Brevard County will look to end their three-game skid against Lakeland tomorrow, as they battle again at 6:30 p.m. at Joker Marchant Stadium. The game will feature an outstanding pitching matching, as the top two active ERA leaders in the Florida State League will square off. Tyler Wagner (7-4, 1.81) will get the start for the 'Tees against the Flying Tigers' Josh Turley (7-0, 1.69).

Kernels crack 19 hits to beat Rattlers 15-5

Wisconsin drops third straight game

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels banged out nineteen hits and defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 15-5 on Tuesday night at Perfect Game Field. JD Williams led the way by going 4-for-4 with four runs and four RBI for the home team. Wisconsin briefly held a 2-1 and tied the game 3-3, but the Kernels offensive onslaught was too much to overcome in this game.

The Kernels (37-50 overall, 6-11 second half) took the lead in the bottom of the first inning with an unearned run. Ryan Walker singled with one out and Chad Christensen reached on an error when his potential inning-ending double play ball was misplayed. A two-out single by Bryan Haar drove in Walker.

Wisconsin (45-42, 9-9) went in front with a home run in the top of the second inning. Dustin DeMuth was hit by a pitch from Kernels starter Lewis Thorpe. Taylor Brennan followed with a two-run home run to right and the Rattlers were up 2-1. Wisconsin had two one with one out and were looking for more in the second, but Thorpe kept the Rattlers from scoring another run in the frame.

Williams put the Kernels back in front with a two-run homer off Tristan Archer in the bottom of the second. Jason Kanzler started the inning with a double. Then, Williams launched his first home run of the season and the Kernels had a 3-2 lead.

The Timber Rattlers scratched out a run in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game. Brennan walked and went to second on a wild pitch. Rafael Neda's grounder to first was misplayed for an error that put runners on the corners with no outs. Jose Pena grounded into a 6-4-3 double play and Brennan scored the tying run.

Cedar Rapids went up one more time in the bottom of the fourth by sending eight men to the plate and scoring four runs. Williams and Tanner Vavra started the inning with consecutive singles. John Murphy doubled off the wall in left to send Williams home for a 5-4 lead.

Omar Garcia made a spectacular catch in left-center for the second out of the inning to rob Walker of extra bases, but Vavra scored from third on the sacrifice fly. The Kernels added to their lead in the inning with an RBI single by Chad Christensen and an RBI double by Mitch Garver. Chris Razo came on to get the final out of the inning.

Michael Ratterree knocked in a run in the top of the fifth inning with a single to get the Rattlers back to within four.

The Kernels got to Razo for three runs in the bottom of the fifth. The first run scored on a throwing error by Razo. Walker doubled in two runs later in the inning for a 10-4 lead.

Zach Quintana took over in the bottom of the sixth and got the first out of the inning. The next three batters reached to load the bases. Williams singled to center to drive in a run and an error on the play let a second run score for a 12-4 advantage.

Brennan knocked in his third run of the game with a single in the top of the eighth and the Rattlers were within 12-5.

But, the Kernels added three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Williams picked up his fourth hit of the night with an RBI double. Vavra chipped in with his third hit, an RBI single. Walker capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly for his fourth RBI of the night.

The Timber Rattlers have lost three straight games for the first time since May 20-22 and are back to .500 in the second half for the first time. Tuesday also marked the first time Wisconsin had allowed ten or more runs in a game since the final game of the first half when they lost 13-2 at Quad Cities.

Game two of the series is Wednesday night. Clint Terry (1-2, 3.77) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. The Kernels have named Ryan Eades (5-8, 6.37) as their scheduled starter. Game time is 6:35pm. The radio broadcast is on AM1280, WNAM and IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:15pm.

HOME RUNS:

WIS:

Taylor Brennan (10th, 1 on in 2nd inning off Lewis Thorpe, 0 out)

CR:

JD Williams (1st, 1 on in 2nd inning off Tristan Archer, 0 out)

WP: Brandon Bixler (5-4)

LP: Tristan Archer (3-4)

Wisconsin Boxscore

Most of the time I'm torn when I have something going on and won't get to listen to a game, craptastic efforts like tonight make it much easier to be away from a radio broadcast... my goodness. The Rattlers had almost as many errors (4) as runs (5)...

At least Taylor Brennan (2-3,HR,BB) had a heck of a game.

Come back and get 'em tomorrow boys.

Sounds Rally To Win In Memphis, 4-2

Nashville's Hector Gomez and Pete Orr Go Deep

Nashville Sounds

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/9/4/6/78466946/cuts/Hector_Gomez_519_1_Large_fpnfh2vr_mziy8nhz.jpg

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds (49-44) got off to a slow start Tuesday night at AutoZone Park, but mounted a late-inning comeback to win 4-2 over the cross-state rival Memphis Redbirds.

After being held without a hit through the game's first six innings and trailing by two, Nashville's bats awoke from their slumber and the Sounds plated three runs in the 7th to take a lead they would never surrender.

Outfielder Elian Herrera became the team's first baserunner of the night by reaching on a two-base fielding error by Memphis third baseman Jermaine Curtis.

Hector Gomez followed Herrera by lifting a home run over the left-field wall to tie it up, 2-2, and extend his season-best hit streak to eight games. The dinger is Gomez's 10th of the season, one shy of matching the team lead.

The Sounds took the 3-2 lead on newcomer Matt Clark's RBI double to left field, which scored Jason Rogers, who singled, but left Sean Halton to be tagged out at home plate.

Infielder Pete Orr added an insurance run for Nashville with his solo homer to lead off the 8th inning, marking the final run of the game.

The rally marks the first win in 32 opportunities for Nashville when trailing after the 6th inning.

Reliever Alfredo Figaro (4-1) picked up the win for his two perfect innings behind Sounds starter Taylor Jungmann, who allowed Memphis two runs in five innings of work.

Closer Jeremy Jeffress notched his third save for the club, inducing double-play balls in both the 8th and 9th innings to strand Redbirds runners.

Memphis grabbed an early 1-0 lead on the Sounds in the 1st inning, when Shane Robinson scored on a groundout after his lead-off single. He moved to second base on a wild pitch from Jungmann and took third on a groundout.

Memphis doubled its lead in the home half of the 5th inning on a pair of two-out knocks. Tommy Pham hit a triple to the right-field corner and was driven home by Stephen Piscotty's single to left.

Redbirds starter John Gast used 61 pitches to retire 17 consecutive Sounds batters in his rain-shortened start.

The game went into a 20-minute rain delay prior to the start of the 4th inning, and paused for a 36-minute hiatus in the top of the 6th.

The Sounds will take on the Redbirds again on Wednesday. RHP Michael Blazek (1-3, 4.44) will take the hill for Nashville opposite Memphis' LHP Tim Cooney (8-5, 3.94). Sounds broadcaster Jeff Hem has the call on 102.5 The Game.

Nashville Boxscore

I've found it very hard to get excited about Taylor Jungmann at all since I was so vocal against the draft pick from the start. Now that he's one of us I keep hoping he'll turn a significant corner like Nelson has, I guess we'll have to see how it turns out. He was alright tonight giving up 5 hits but not walking a batter, the 2 runs he allowed in 5 IP actually lowered his ERA.
