From March 29th --

Via Adam McCalvy (MLB Trade Rumors text) --

The Brewers have inked catcher Connor Narron (career stats), the son of bench coach Jerry Narron, to a minor league deal, tweets MLB.com's Adam McCalvy. Narron will report to extended Spring Training.

The 22-year-old was drafted in the fifth round in 2010 by the Orioles, and has topped out at the high-A level thus far. He was released by the O's earlier this week.

***

In his pro career, the switch-hitting Narron has played at the following positions --

First base - 94 games

Third base - 81 games

Left field - 45 games

Shortstop - 8 games

Right field - 4 games

Catcher - 0 games

From this year-old article (I suggest this click for the full read):

Connor Narron's nearly ended earlier this year over a tray of brownies.

While attempting to scoop brownies out of the tray with a knife instead of a spatula — a move even he knows is ill-advised — Narron sliced open the palm of his left hand and needed 10 stitches to close the wound.

The mishap caused Narron, the only son of former major league catcher and manager Jerry Narron, to miss nearly all of spring training. He practiced for about a week before being assigned to Frederick, where he will open the season Friday with the Keys as one of the team's first basemen.

Narron knows he is lucky. If that cut was a few centimeters deeper, his career epitaph would have read something like: Connor Narron, lacerated hand (brownies).

It's hard to imagine a more ignominious career-ending injury and it's even more impossible to imagine how he might have lived it down, especially as the son of a former major leaguer. Not that Narron was giving it much thought.

"I had a full stomach (from the brownies)," he said.

***

No matter how you slice it (pun intended), those are ugly career offensive numbers. And now it's an apparent transition to catcher. Starting over in Maryvale at age 22 is not a crime, however, so we'll see...

***

Narron is making his debut for the Brewers organization for Maryvale tonight.

Nelson goes 7 innings giving up no runs, 4 hits, and 2 BB with 4 k's. I cannot wait until he is past his super 2 status

I don't think Super 2 is a consideration at all. I don't believe (may be wrong) that September call-up time counts against that clock for arbitration purposes. Even if so, that threshold has long past.

Toolivebrew and Crew07 both make it sound like Super 2 is a consideration and that he wont be past Super 2 until mid July or something like that

'Tees shutout in suspended game

Viera, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees were shutout by the Clearwater Threshers, 3-0 in the completion of a suspended game on Monday at Space Coast Stadium.

On Sunday night, the 'Tees (10-4 second half, 46-34 overall) and Threshers (6-10, 23-61) were supposed to play a doubleheader and Cliff Lee was due to make his first Major League rehab start for Clearwater. The first game and Lee's start, however, were halted in the top of the third inning due to heavy rain.

Prior to the rain, Lee pitched two scoreless innings against Brevard County. The four-time All-Star used an inning-ending double play to get out of a jam with a pair of 'Tees on base in the first. He then pitched a one-two-three second inning to finish with two scoreless innings, two strikeouts and one hit allowed.

Clearwater opened the scoring with two outs in the top of the third. With the rain coming down hard and the wind whipping at Space Coast Stadium, 'Tees starter Austin Ross inadvertently hit Roman Quinn in the foot with a pitch. The next batter was J.P. Crawford and he hit a fly ball that carried over the left field wall.

Immediately after Crawford's homer gave the Threshers a 2-0 lead, the umpiring crew directed the tarp to be put on the field. After a 1:05 delay, the game was suspended until Monday.

When the game resumed on Monday night, Clearwater maintained its lead thanks to a solid pitching performance by rookie Aaron Nola. The Phillies' first round pick in this year's draft pitched five shutout innings in relief of Lee.

Nola (1-1, 3.18 ERA) struck out five men over his five frames and only allowed one hit en route to his first professional victory. The only hit against Nola was a sixth-inning single by Nathan Orf who delivered the only other 'Tees hit of the game back in the first inning.

Though Nola did not appear to need any help, the Threshers tacked on an insurance run in the fifth. With Chad Pierce on the hill, Anthony Phillips drilled a one-out double. Phillips then moved to third on an errant pick-off throw by Brevard County catcher Cameron Garfield. That allowed Quinn to drive in Phillips with a sacrifice fly to center and the Threshers took a 3-0 lead. They went on to win by that score.

Ross (7-2, 3.12 ERA) took the loss for the Manatees. His only two runs allowed were on Crawford's home run in the third. Ross pitched 2.2 innings, allowed three hits, hit a batter and struck out two.

Brevard County's loss marked just the third time in 10 meetings that the 'Tees had fallen to Clearwater this season. All of those defeats have come at Space Coast Stadium. The 'Tees and Threshers are now finishing their brief two-game series with a seven-inning contest that began approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the suspended game.

Brevard County Box Score

Not much to talk about in this one aside from Nathan Orf's 2-for-3. Trevor Seidenberger tossed two scoreless innings in his Manatees debut.

Torts did a really good job via some Fangraphs articles explaining the Super 2 situation in that thread linked above, but with the old 17% Nelson would be up already. With the new CBA it's now the top 22% of 2-3 year players to qualify for super 2.

edit. And yes, why on earth did Sweet try to push Hand 2 innings when he's been struggling much of the season?

Final: Clearwater 7, Brevard County 3

Threshers' four-run first sinks Brevard, 7-3

By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees

Manatees outfielder Michael Reed, seen here in a game from earlier this season, drove in two runs in Brevard County's 7-3 loss to the Clearwater Threshers in the second game of a doubleheader on Monday night at Space Coast Stadium. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

VIERA, Fla. - After losing the completion of a suspended game earlier in the day, the Brevard County Manatees fell to the Clearwater Threshers in a seven-inning contest, 7-3 at Space Coast Stadium on Monday night.

Clearwater jumped in front in a hurry. After Brevard's starter Damien Magnifico hit Roman Quinn to begin the game, Everett Williams slammed an RBI double to open the scoring.

Williams was later retired on a ground ball to third base off the bat of Brandon Short. The runner tried to advance to third when Nicky Delmonico bobbled the ball. However, Magnifico covered third and Delmonico threw to him for the tag-out.

Short reached first on the play and Art Charles worked a walk to bring Brian Pointer to the dish. Pointer delivered the big blow of the inning, as he lifted a homer to left that gave the Threshers a 4-0 lead in the opening frame.

In the bottom of the third, the Manatees mounted a big rally to pull within one run. Parker Berberet and Jose Sermo hit back-to-back singles, but Nathan Orf rolled into a 6-4-3 double play. Sermo and Orf were retired, but Berberet moved to third with two outs.

Orlando Arcia then worked a walk to put runners on the corners and Tyrone Taylor put the 'Tees on the board with an unlikely double. Taylor ripped a single up the middle and Clearwater second baseman Anthony Phillips dove after it. The ball deflected off of Phillips' glove and toward shortstop. Berberet scored easily and Taylor hustled up to second with an infield two-bagger.

The Manatees had Arcia on third and Taylor on second for Michael Reed with a chance to tighten the score. Reed rolled a single up the middle that scored both runners and the 'Tees only trailed, 4-3.

Clearwater, however, pulled away in the fifth. After Phillips led off with a single, Quinn dropped a bunt single down the third base line. Crawford then singled to load the bases for Williams. The left fielder had already roped an RBI double, plus a single and he added another knock with a two-run single to put the Threshers further ahead. A sacrifice fly by Short scored Crawford shortly thereafter and Clearwater led, 7-3.

Threshers starter Mark Leiter kept the Manatees from threatening again. The only runs he allowed over his six innings came in the third. Leiter (1-0, 3.46 ERA) struck out five, walked one and surrendered seven hits.

Magnifico (5-5, 3.95 ERA) eventually took the loss after he allowed seven runs in 4.1 innings. The starter gave up eight hits, walked one and struck out three.

Before Lee Ridenhour closed the game out for Clearwater in the bottom of the seventh, five players were ejected in the top of the inning.

Manatees reliever Mark Williams was tossed first after throwing a pitch that nearly hit Crawford. Arcia and Jose Sermo of the 'Tees and Clearwater's Brian Pointer and Corey Bass were also ejected. Leiter had hit Arcia with a pitch in the fifth inning.

Following a pair of losses on Monday night, the 'Tees will head to Lakeland to start a three-game series against the Flying Tigers on Tuesday. Brevard County is expected to throw Jorge Lopez (8-3, 2.83 ERA) against Kevin Eichhorn (4-2, 2.44 ERA). First pitch at Joker Marchant Stadium is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Brevard County Box Score

Michael Reed went 2-for-3 and knocked in a pair of runs and Orlando Arcia was on base three times with a single, a walk and a hit by pitch. As previously mentioned, some fireworks late in this one. You would have to think it goes back to Arcia getting thrown at a couple of times last week when he was destroying Clearwater pitching. He got plunked tonight and things escalated from there. I'm sure I'm biased, but if I were in Arcia's shoes I'd probably be ready to fight too. He does his job (and does it very well, going 7-for-15 with three doubles and two home runs in a three game series) and his reward is to get head-hunted? Then he has to face the same team again a week later and he's getting thrown at again. So Mark Williams sticks up for his guy, gets tossed and now suddenly Clearwater has a problem with the beanballs? The two teams play each other seven times yet this season, but not again until August so hopefully things cool down by then. The last thing we need is a player of Arcia's caliber getting hurt because a pitcher would rather thrown at him than man up and try to get him out.

Brevard County Play-By-Play

Brevard's three run third

Brevard County Bottom of the 3rd

Parker Berberet singles on a line drive to right fielder Brian Pointer.

Jose Sermo singles on a line drive to right fielder Brian Pointer. Parker Berberet to 2nd.

Nathan Orf grounds into a double play, shortstop J. P. Crawford to second baseman Anthony Phillips to first baseman Art Charles. Parker Berberet to 3rd. Jose Sermo out at 2nd.

Orlando Arcia walks.

Tyrone Taylor doubles (29) on a ground ball to second baseman Anthony Phillips. Parker Berberet scores. Orlando Arcia to 3rd.

Michael Reed singles on a line drive to center fielder Roman Quinn. Orlando Arcia scores. Tyrone Taylor scores.

Nick Delmonico strikes out swinging.

Fun fact: Cutter Dykstra is a 2014 Eastern League (AA - Nationals) All-Star.

And yes, Dykstra, recently turned 25, is still with Jamie-Lynn Sigler of Sopranos fame, their son Beau turns one in August.

Dykstra looks like he's turned himself into a useful young nice utility player. Playing everywhere but catcher and pitcher. And he's drawing a lot of walks. Still just 25 he could carve out a nice career still.

Sounds Suffer Tough Loss In Series Opener In Memphis

Redbirds Plate Two In Bottom Of Ninth To Steal 2-1 Victory

Nashville Sounds

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/8/3/0/78648830/cuts/Jimmy_Nelson_805_2_Large_oivj6akn_x7xrw46m.jpg

(Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds)

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Redbirds plated two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to steal a 2-1 victory against the Nashville Sounds on Monday evening at AutoZone Park in the opener of a four-game series.

The late Memphis rally, which came against Donovan Hand in his second inning of work in the contest, erased a chance for top Brewers prospect Jimmy Nelson to pick up his league-leading 11th victory following another brilliant pitching performance.

Nelson, who took a no-decision following his 16th quality outing in 17 trips to the hill for Nashville this season, extended his scoreless innings streak to 22 with seven scoreless frames, limiting Memphis to four hits while walking two and striking out four during his 83-pitch effort. The right-hander lowered his league-leading ERA to 1.46 with his seven goose eggs in the contest.

Nashville (48-48) fell to 18-26 in road games this season as it suffered its eighth last at-bat loss. The Sounds have held a lead in 18 of their 26 road defeats.

Shortstop Hector Gomez, who went 2-for-4 to extend his season-best hitting streak to seven games, broke up a scoreless deadlock in the top of the sixth when his one-out RBI single followed Elian Herrera's hustle double on a ball up the middle. Gomez is batting .433 (13-for-30) over his hit streak.

Memphis starter Zach Petrick matched Nelson's effort with an outstanding outing of his own. The right-hander held the Sounds to just one run on six hits while fanning six in his seven frames of action.

The Sounds missed chances to add an insurance run in the eighth and ninth against Memphis reliever Eric Fornataro, stranding a runner in scoring position in each frame as the right-hander kept it a 1-0 game.

Hand (1-5) worked around a pair of baserunners in a scoreless eighth before running into trouble in the ninth, when he suffered a blown save and took the loss.

Xavier Scruggs led off the Memphis ninth with a single and advanced to second when Greg Garcia laid down a bunt that was mishandled by first baseman Matt Clark, allowing both runners to remain safe on the play. Pinch-hitter Jermaine Curtis followed with a ground ball deep in the hole at second base, where Pete Orr attempted to make a play at the plate but his throw was late as Scruggs hustled in with the tying run.

After an Audry Perez grounder erased Garcia at the plate, Luis Mateo ended the game with an RBI infield single that gave Memphis a 2-1 win.

The teams continue the series with a 7:02 p.m. matchup on Tuesday. Right-hander Taylor Jungmann (4-5, 5.55) will toe the slab for the Sounds to face Memphis southpaw John Gast (2-2, 9.43).

Nashville Boxscore

I disagree with the premise of the article, this game wasn't stolen as much as it was given away. Jimmy Nelson wasn't as dominant from a SO perspective as he's been but was still exceedingly effective.

Donovan Hand should have had his 5th consecutive scoreless appearance, he's not a 2 inning guy at this point but Sweet has been leaning heavily on the pen. He needed 4 relievers to get through 3 innings yesterday and you gotta believe even though Jeffress had pitched 2.1 innings he could have closed it down one more time in the 9th.
