"Pitching: Orleans’ Kolton Mahoney (BYU Junior) gave up just two hits and three walks while striking out six over six shutout innings during the Firebirds’ 7-0 win against Wareham on 6/21. Mahoney is now 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in two appearances this season. He earned a save in his first outing — a four inning appearance on June 14 against Chatham."

Ten scoreless innings thus far -- 4 H, 4 BB, 13 K

I hope to attend the Orleans at Wareham game on July 16th. Maybe I can convince Mahoney to sign by the July 18th deadline ;).

Mahoney struck out 11 and walked zero in a six-inning win on Saturday (three ER). He's now walked only four while striking out 24 in 16 innings.

Having served on a Mormon mission, the BYU junior and Brewers 23rd round pick turned 22 in May.

There's this from the Haudricourt article linked in the prior post:

With their first 16 picks signed and 27 of 40 overall, the Brewers have a bit of money left from their $7.6 million draft allotment. The deadline for signing is July 18.

"We have our eye on a couple of other guys," (Bruce) Seid said.

"We're pretty satisfied with where we're at. We drafted guys we thought had good value after the top three."

***

Mahoney made another scoreless start on Saturday 7/5 (five IP, 2 H, 3 BB, 4 K's), he now has scoreless appearances of four, six and five innings among his three outings, as seen here.

The 23rd round pick is certainly boosting his potential bonus value.

Learn about Kodi Medeiros and much more, as Tom Haudricourt's latest is a very nice read for followers of the Minor League system.

"For those wondering why Medeiros hasn't pitched yet for the Brewers' rookie entry in Arizona, he was given some time to go back home and rest and relax with family after participating in several pre-draft workouts. He should make his pro debut sometime this week."

Bandits shutout Rattlers in game one

Quad Cities beats Wisconsin 5-0

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

DAVENPORT, IA - Anthony Banda struck out ten Quad Cities River Bandits in game one of Sunday's doubleheader at Modern Woodmen Park. Chris Lee held the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scoreless through six innings. It was Lee who picked up the win as the Bandits got some timely hits to beat the Rattlers 5-0.

The River Bandits (44-41 overall, 9-7 second half) took advantage of an error in the second inning to score three unearned runs for an early lead. Chase McDonald's reached on a throwing error after his routine grounder to short to start the Quad Cities second. Brett Booth singled with one out to put two runners on base. Banda struck out Brian Holberton for the second out. Thomas Lindauer followed the strikeout with a home run to left. The three-run blast gave Quad Cities a 3-0 lead.

McDonald sparked another rally for the River Bandits in the bottom of the third with a two-out single. Ronnie Mitchell's triple to center scored McDonald from first to make the score 4-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, McDonald cashed in a run with an RBI single. Jose Fernandez drew a walk, stole second, and stole third. McDonald drove a one-out single through a drawn-in infield and the Bandits led 5-0.

The Timber Rattlers (45-40, 9-7) struggled to get anything against Lee. Chris McFarland had a single in the first and a single in the fourth, but did not score. In the fifth, Rafael Neda singled and Jose Pena walked with one out, but Lee got a pair of flyouts to right to end the threat. In the sixth, Johnny Davis reached on a bunt single and Clint Coulter doubled with two outs to put runners on the corners. Taylor Brennan lined a 1-0 pitch right at the second baseman for the final out of the inning.

Banda struck out ten over five innings to set a new single game high as a professional for strikeouts, but allowed five runs - two earned - on six hits to take the loss. The defeat ended Banda's personal three-game winning streak. Lee walked one and struck out one to earn his second straight victory.

Chris Cotton closed out the Rattlers with a scoreless ninth. This game was just the third time the Timber Rattlers have been shutout this season.

HOME RUN:

QC:

Thomas Lindauer (4th, 2 on in 2nd inning off Anthony Banda, 2 out)

WP: Chris Lee (4-5)

LP: Anthony Banda (4-6)

Final (12 innings): Billings 12, Helena 11

Billings needs extras to top Helena 12-11

By Dustin Daniel / Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers (9-12) lost a heartbreaker on Sunday 12-11 to the Billings Mustangs (11-10) in 12 innings.

The Mustangs put three runs on the board in the top of the first, scoring in the first frame for the third straight game. Cory Thompson and Aristedes Aquino had homers in the inning off Helena starter Josh Uhen. Uhen pitched four innings in the start, giving up three runs on five hits and striking out a season-high seven strikeouts.

Billings would extend their lead in the fifth with two more runs, making it a 5-0 lead when Aquino had an RBI single off J.B. Kole. Aquino was 4-for-5 with five RBI, three runs, and two homeruns.

Trailing 7-1 going to the bottom of the seventh, Helena put on an offensive showcase. Seven runs would cross the plate in the inning for the Brewers giving them an 8-7 advantage. Mitch Meyer, Sthervin Matos and Francisco Castillo came up with doubles in the inning off of two Mustangs pitchers, knocking Jose Guzman out of the game.

It would be back and forth for the next two innings with the Brewers taking a 9-8 lead to the ninth. Zach Hirsch came in for the save, but was unable to convert. The former Cornhusker would let in three Mustangs runners in the inning to give the visitors an 11-9 lead. The late rally included two homeruns; one from Alex Blandino, a solo shot to left, and Aquino's second round-tripper of the day.

Trailing by two going to the bottom of the ninth the Brewers found their way back into the ballgame. Greg McCall came up with a clutch two-RBI single to tie the ballgame and send it to extras. McCall was 3-for-6 with 4 RBI, a season-high in both hits and RBIs for the catcher out of UT-Arlington.

After Ryan Deeter pitched two shutout innings of relief in the 10th and 11th innings, Luke Curtis entered the game for the Brewers in the 12th. The closer would give up two hits including a chopping single over the head of Gregory Munoz to score the go-ahead run for the Mustangs.

Helena's offense would go down in order in the bottom of the 12th to end the game.

The Brewers now take to the road for a seven game trip, starting with four contests with the Owlz. First pitch on Tuesday from Orem is set for 7:05 p.m.

Helena Box Score

With their hottest hitter, Dustin DeMuth, now in Wisconsin the Helena squad hammered out 11 runs on 18 hits, including 5 doubles. Leadoff hitter Francisco Castillo went 3-for-7 with a double. Outfielder Elvis Rubio went 3-for-5 with a double and 2 walks. The recently turned 20 year old Rubio is now 14-for-41 in his last 10 games with a .426 OBP over that same period. In his second game for Helena, 3B Sthervin Matos went 4-for-6 with double and 2 stolen bases. Catcher Greg McCall continues to take advantage of Pioneer League pitching, going 3-for-6 with a walk and 4 RBIs. McCall also threw out Reds supplemental 1st round pick, SS Alex Blandino, twice in the game, once on steal attempt of 2B and once on a pickoff at 1B.

On the pitching side, the Brewers combined to give up 15 hits (5 of which were HRs) and 12 runs. Starter Josh Uhen went 4.0 innings, giving up 5 hits, 3 runs, 2 walks while recording 7 strikeouts. Relief Pitcher Ryan Deeter pitched 2.0 hitless/scoreless innings, and has now pitched 7.0 innings on the season only giving up 2 hits and no earned runs while striking out 9.

Final: Jackson 8, @Huntsville 5

Stars Late Rally Falls Short

Steve Jarnicki, Huntsville Stars

Huntsville, AL - The Jackson Generals hit a pair of home runs including a three-run homer late in the game by D.J. Peterson, giving the Generals an 8-5 win over the Huntsville Stars Sunday at Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville.

The Stars led only once and that was in the first inning after Robinzon Diaz singled home Kentrail Davis giving the Stars a 1-0 lead.

From there it was all Generals. Huntsville starter Drew Gagnon only lasted two innings and Jackson got to him in the top of the second.

With one on and one out, Dan Paolini sent a two-run homer over the left center field wall for his fifth home run of the season. It put Jackson ahead 2-1. Jack Marder also contributed a sacrifice fly in the inning pushing it to a 3-1 lead.

Jackson starter Victor Sanchez (4-4) was in control most of the day after allowing the first inning run. Sanchez, did however let the Stars to close the gap on their 3-1 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Nick Shaw led off with a triple. Diaz scored Shaw on a sacrifice fly making it 3-2.

Jackson extended their lead in the eighth inning against Tommy Toledo. Paolini singled into left field scoring Peterson. Dario Pizzano then reached on a fielder's choice scoring Patrick Kivlehand making it 5-2.

Jackson then in the top of the ninth added the three-run home run by Peterson off Tanner Poppe. It was Peterson's second home run of the season and in as many games.

With the Stars trailing 8-2 going into the bottom of the ninth, the Stars attempted a late comeback. Shea Vucinich delivered a two-run single and later scored on a throwing error by the catcher Mike Dowd cutting it to an 8-5 lead.

David Colvin, the Jackson righty, got Davis to ground back to the pitcher's mound to end the game.

Sanchez, who earned the win for Jackson, turned in a quality start. He went seven innings allowing two runs on four hits.

Gagnon (5-4) took the loss, pitching a season low two innings. He allowed three runs (two earned) on one hit.

The Stars (8-10, 54-33) trail the Generals (6-12,37-50) 2-1 in their five game series. Game four of the series will be Monday at Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville. The Stars will have LHP Brent Suter (7-6, 3.84) on the mound. Jackson will send RHP LHP Tyler Pike (1-0, 1.46) to the hill. The game can be heard starting at 6:15 pm CDT on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM and wtkiradio.com.

Huntsville Box Score

Gagnon exited after only 31 pitches, 15 strikes. Sure, his effort was uneven, but hardly pull-worthy at that point. What else was at play there?

Kudos, RHP Eric Marzec, on four scoreless innings behind Gagnon.

Hacktastic Robinzon Diaz has walked four times in 161 AB's, but he rakes against AA pitching.

It kind of goes unspoken in the clubhouse, I'm sure, but it's tough to motivate teamwise after that first-half clinch. Individual self-motivation shouldn't be an issue at all, though.

Huntsville Game Log

Another premature exit was that of D'Vontrey Richardson --

Huntsville Bottom of the 2nd

D' Vontrey Richardson flies out to center fielder Leon Landry.

Joey Paciorek grounds out, shortstop Ketel Marte to first baseman Patrick Kivlehan.

Shea Vucinich flies out to center fielder Leon Landry.

Jackson Top of the 3rd

Defensive switch from left field to center field for Erik Komatsu.

Defensive Substitution: Josh Prince replaces center fielder D' Vontrey Richardson, batting 6th, playing left field.

Rattlers fall in game two on a walkoff grand slam

Phillips sends QC 6-4 win and a doubleheader sweep

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Timber Rattlers starting pitcher Victor Diaz went 6-1/3 innings in game two of Sunday's doubleheader against the Quad Cities River Bandits at Modern Woodmen Park. (Rich Guill)

DAVENPORT, IA - Brett Phillips hit a walkoff grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Quad Cities River Bandits a 6-4 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in game two of Sunday's doubleheader at Modern Woodmen Park. The River Bandits swept the twinbill with a 5-0 win in game one and the walkoff win in game two. Wisconsin starting pitcher Victor Diaz was within two outs of a complete game victory, but the bullpen could not hold on after he came out of the game with two on and one out.

Quad Cities (45-41 overall, 10-7 second half) appeared headed for a big inning in the bottom of the first against Diaz. James Ramsay reached on an error to start the frame. Diaz walked the next two batters to load the bases with no outs. Diaz got the first out on a foul pop. Ronnie Mitchell hit a sharp single to right to drive in Ramsay for a 1-0 lead. Diaz slammed the door on the Bandits in the first with a strikeout and a force play.

Wisconsin (45-41, 9-8) got on the board in the top of the fourth without a hit. Angel Ortega was hit by a pitch with one out to reach first. Johnny Davis drew a walk. Ortega took third on a pitch in the dirt with Omar Garcia at the plate. Garcia's grounder to short was enough to get Ortega home with the tying run.

Michael Ratterree put the Rattlers in front with a long, leadoff home run in the top of the fourth. The homer, Ratterree's fourteenth of the season, was the first hit of the game for the Rattlers.

Dustin DeMuth and Rafael Neda kept the hits coming with back-to-back singles. Steve Halcomb loaded the bases with a one out single to bring Ortega to the plate. Ortega lined a single to left to drive in DeMuth for a 3-1 lead.

The Rattlers tacked on a run in the top of the fifth against reliever Michael Feliz. DeMuth drew a walk with two outs. Neda stepped in and worked the count to 3-2. Neda drilled a double to left-center and DeMuth, who was running on the pitch, scored easily for a 4-1 lead.

Quad Cities shaved a run off the Wisconsin lead in the bottom of the fifth. James Ramsay tripled to start the inning. A grounder to short by Marc Wik drove in Ramsay to make the score 4-2.

Diaz worked a 1-2-3 sixth and went back out for the bottom of the seventh inning, but allowed a leadoff single to Dayne Parker. Diaz got the first out on a flyball to center. Diaz looked like he would get the second out on a flyball to center off the bat of Ramsay, but the ball was lost in the lights and dropped in for a single. That was the end of the line for Diaz, who was near 100 pitches.

Tyler Spurlin, who picked up the win for the Rattlers in Friday's comeback victory, took over and got ahead of Wik 1-2. But, Wik chopped a single through the left side of the infield to load the bases.

Phillips drove the first pitch of his at bat against Spurlin over the wall in right-center for the walkoff slam and the doubleheader sweep.

Sunday marks the first time the Timber Rattlers have been swept in a doubleheader this season. They had split four and swept three from their opponents prior to Sunday.

The Timber Rattlers are off on Monday. They resume play on Tuesday at Cedar Rapids with the first game of a three-game series against the Kernels. Tristan Archer (3-3, 3.44) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Wisconsin. Lewis Thorpe (1-1, 5.16) is set to start for the Kernels. Game time is 6:35pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:15pm.

Wisconsin Game2 Boxscore

I might be getting too attached to this team, when Chris said the ball left the park I shut off the radio feed instantly in disgust. Speaking of Mehring he mentioned that when new arrivals join the team they have to answer 3 questions on the bus, anyone can ask a question and anything goes. Dustin Demuth was asked how to get Kyle Schwarber out and Demuth answered that it wasn't possible... here's hoping he was very wrong.

Angel Ortega was actually hit square in the head by the pitch but managed to stay in the game. Mehring reiterated that the T-Rats are using the new batting helmets this year and he credited the new equipment with Ortega's ability to stay in the game.

Rafael Neda (2-2, 2B, HBP) has been an OBP machine of late, though he's clearly sick of being hit by pitches, now 4 games in a row. He's hitting .393 over his last 10 which has pushed his season AVE up to .272.

Johnny Davis continues his steep learning curve as he made a great play in the 4th inning but he also had a couple of gaffes today, 1 in each game which directly led to runs but weren't scored as errors.

Sounds Take Series With 10-6 Win

Nashville's Halton Goes 4-for-5 with 3 RBIs; Clark Drives In Four

Nashville Sounds

(MIKE STRASINGER )

ROUND ROCK, Texas - The first-place Nashville Sounds (48-43) picked up their third straight series win by offing the Round Rock Express in Sunday night's series finale, 10-6.

The Sounds jumped out to an early 3-0 lead courtesy of newcomer Matt Clark, who drove a three-run two-out double over right fielder Engel Beltre's head to mark his first hit with the club.

Clark's at-bat was preceded by an infield error to put Eugenio Velez on first, a two-out walk to Jeremy Hermida, and a fielding miscue that allowed Sean Halton to reach base on an infield single with no one covering first base. Clark finished with three hits and four RBIs.

Halton, 4-for-5, added to Nashville's lead with his single in the 3rd inning which scored Jason Rogers, who reached base on balls. Catcher Shawn Zarraga, 2-for-3, made it a 5-0 game with his bases-loaded sacrifice fly.

Shortstop Hector Gomez, 3-for-5, hit a double in the 4th inning to extend his season-best hit streak to six games. He currently holds the team's longest active streak. Gomez came around to score on a single from Halton for a six-run advantage.

Gomez hit his second double of the game in the 7th inning to plate Nashville's seventh run. Then in the 8th, the Sounds scored three with consecutive RBI singles from Halton, Clark and Zarraga.

Nashville has now scored five runs or more in 10 of its last 11 victories.

Sounds starting pitcher Ariel Pena (5-6) turned in six innings for Nashville, firing a season-high 10 strikeouts en route to his fifth win of the year. Pena ran into trouble in the 4th inning, during which four runs came across, including a two-base run-scoring wild pitch.

Reliever Arcenio Leon delivered a scoreless 7th inning for Nashville, before Round Rock plated a pair of runs in the 8th up against Brent Leach, who loaded the bases to open the frame.

Jose De La Torre stepped in to offer a bases-loaded walk and then a one-out sacrifice fly. Jeremy Jeffress closed out the 8th and 9th innings to pick up his second save.

The Sounds will continue their road trip in Memphis on Monday against the Redbirds (AAA-Cardinals). RHP Jimmy Nelson (10-2, 1.56) will take the hill for Nashville opposite Memphis' LHP Tyler Lyons (2-1, 5.35). Broadcaster Jeff Hem has the call on 102.5 The Game.

Nashville Boxscore

The Ariel Pena rollercoaster ride continues... it will be interesting next season when both he and Johnny Hellweg are out of options. Will they make effective relievers?

Quite the game for the offense, Shawn Zarraga's renaissance as a player continues... Caleb Gindl (playing CF in this one) only has 2 hits in his last 10 games. Jason Rogers is only 6-33 thus far in AAA, hopefully he gets his feet underneath him soon. Sean Halton's big day pushed his AVE up to .294 but even though he's almost hitting .300 his OPS is only .770. It's really too bad he doesn't have much power since he's limited to the corners but regardless he's hitting .462 over his last 10 games.
