Sounds Fall To Express, 4-3

Pagnozzi Belts Three-Run Homer To Provide Nashville Offense In Loss

Nashville Sounds

(Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds)

ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Round Rock Express scored four unanswered runs to hang a 4-3 loss on the Nashville Sounds on Saturday evening at The Dell Diamond.

With the defeat, Nashville's lead in the PCL American Conference Southern Division was reduced to a half-game over the Express.

Mike Fiers (6-4) took the loss despite turning in a quality start for the Sounds, allowing two earned runs (four total runs) on four hits while striking out eight and not walking a batter in his seven frames of work.

Catcher Matt Pagnozzi gave the Sounds a 3-0 lead in the third inning when he belted a three-run homer to left off Express starter Luke Jackson. Caleb Gindl (walk) and Hector Gomez (single) scored on the blast, the backstop's ninth round tripper of the year.

Pagnozzi's longball extended Nashville's season-best home run streak to eight straight games.

Nashville missed a chance to do further damage in the frame after loading the bases with one out following the Pagnozzi homer. However, Jackson escaped the jam by fanning Matt Clark and retiring Pete Orr on an inning-ending groundout.

Clark made his Sounds and Brewers organization debut in the contest, going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.

Round Rock pulled back within a run at 3-2 in the bottom of the third with a pair of unearned runs resulting from a throwing error by Orr at third base. Following the gaff, Luis Sardinas and Jared Hoying contributed run-scoring doubles against Fiers.

The Express pulled in front in the fifth against Fiers. After the right-hander hit Josh Wilson with a pitch, Ryan Strausborger ripped a game-tying triple into the right field corner. Sardinas followed with a go-ahead RBI groundout to put the home team in front, 4-3.

Michael Kirkman (2-4) picked up the victory after working a pair of perfect relief innings behind Jackson for the Express.

After squandering the bases-loaded opportunity in the third, Nashville placed only one runner into scoring position in the final six frames against Round Rock pitchers. Kevin Mattison was stranded at second when Jeremy Hermida struck out to end the seventh.

Sidewinding closer Ben Rowen retired the Sounds in order in the top of the ninth to notch his third save of the year.

The teams wrap up the three-game series with a 7:05 p.m. rubber match finale on Sunday evening. Right-hander Ariel Pena (4-6, 4.73) will make the start for the Sounds and face Round Rock right-hander Phil Irwin (4-1, 4.21).

Game One Final: Helena 5, Billings 3

Game Two Final: Billings 6, Helena 5

Brewers and Mustangs split a double-header

By Dustin Daniel / Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers (9-11) split a double-header on Saturday with the Billings Mustangs (10-10) taking game one 5-3 and falling 6-5 in the second.

The Brewers posted four runs in the bottom of the second inning of game one on five hits off of Mustangs starter Tejay Antone (0-1). Antone threw two and two thirds innings in his Pioneer League debut, giving up four runs on seven hits and three walks.

Cy Sneed and Brandon Moore (1-0) combined for a dandy of an outing, striking out seven batters on seven hits.

Francisco Castillo was the offensive anchor, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored in game one. He would rack up two stolen bases on the day, doubling his season total.

The second game would become much more interesting as late scoring from Helena pushed the Mustangs to the brink.

Billings took a 6-1 lead to the bottom of the seventh with the help of three Helena errors. They would do all of their scoring in two innings, putting three runs on the board in the first and fifth.

With a 6-1 lead going to the bottom of the seventh inning, the Mustangs almost gave the game away. Natanael Mejia led off with a single and the Brewers later loaded the bases. With the bases juiced, Francisco Castillo ripped a three-RBI triple to right field to bring the tying run to the plate. Elvis Rubio then popped a single over the head of Cory Thompson to score Castillo and bring the tally to 6-5. Sthervin Matos, playing in his first Pioneer League game, then struck out to end the contest.

The Brewers and Mustangs will face off in the finale of their three-game series on Sunday. First pitch from Kindrick Field is set for 1:05 p.m.

Brewers earn Saturday split

by Amber Kuehn, Helena Independent Record

Coming up just one run short of a sweep, the Helena Brewers dropped the nightcap of a doubleheader 6-5 to the Billings Mustangs on Saturday night at Kindrick Legion Field.

Helena handed Billings a 5-3 setback in the first game, which was a makeup contest from a June 20 rainout.

“The first game we were solid,” Brewers manager Tony Diggs said. “Once everybody settled in, it was good all around. We swung the bats well and we played good defense.”

Both contests were seven-inning games. Helena is now 9-11, while Billings is 10-10.

Brewers second baseman Francisco Castillo had the hot bat on the evening. After going 3 for 4 with a pair of RBIs in the first game, Castillo was 2 for 4 with a three-run, bases-clearing triple in the second tilt.

Billings and Helena meet again today in a matinee, with first pitch scheduled for 1:05 PM (2:05 Central). Josh Uhen gets the nod for the Brewers.

GAME ONE: HELENA 5, BILLINGS 3

Cy Sneed and Brandon Moore pitched effectively, and Castillo went 3 for 4 with a pair of RBIs to lead the Brewers to a 5-3 victory in top open the doubleheader.

The Mustangs took the early lead in the first on a sacrifice fly by Cory Thompson, but the Brewers answered back in the second. Greg McCall and Tucker Neuhaus hit back-to-back singles to start, and Mitch Meyer advanced the duo on a sac bunt. McCall came home on an RBI single by Natanael Mejia, and Alan Sharkey’s RBI single scored Neuhaus with the go-ahead run. Castillo’s two-run single made it 4-1 as the Brewers batted around against Billings starter Tejay Antone.

Helena added an insurance run in the fourth on Brandon Diaz’s RBI single. The Mustangs trimmed into the lead with a pair of runs in the seventh, but Moore worked out of the jam to earn his first win of the season.

Diaz and Mejia were each 2 for 3 for the Brewers. Mejia, a catcher, was playing out of position at third base after the promotion of Dustin DeMuth and the pre-game scratch of Gregory Munoz left Helena short on infielders. Neuhaus was moved over to shortstop, the position he has played for most of his career prior to being drafted, and Sharkey appears to be the new everyday first baseman for Helena.

DeMuth was promoted to the Low-A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Saturday after returning home from a two-game trip to Great Falls. He left Helena as the Pioneer League-leader in hits (25), second in average (.403) and fourth in on-base percentage (.441). Upon his promotion, DeMuth was also the team leader in total bases, slugging percentage and OPS.

“That’s great for him,” Diggs said. “But he was a pretty solid bat in our lineup.”

Diggs said Sthervin Matos should fill that void. He was promoted from the Arizona League and played in the second game. He was batting below the Mendoza line in the AZL, but was 2 for 4 in his Helena debut.

Antone was tagged with the loss for the Mustangs after allowing four earned runs on seven hits through 2 2/3 innings. Sneed, the Helena starter, settled down after giving up back-to-back base hits in the first, pitching shutout ball after that first frame. Sneed and Moore combined to strike out seven.

GAME TWO: BILLINGS 6, HELENA 5

Coming to Helena Saturday evening between games, catching a ride shortly after his plane arrived in Great Falls, Matos wasted little time finding his groove.

The third baseman, who woke up Saturday morning in Phoenix, impressed with a booming solo shot in the fourth inning. Matos, who spent the past three years in the Dominican Summer League, received the call up from the AZL upon DeMuth’s promotion. He reportedly hadn’t even arrived in the Capital City as of first pitch of Game 1, but was in the lineup batting cleanup for the nightcap.

Although his first play of the game was a defensive error, Matos more than made up for it with a home run in the fourth. The ball cleared the net in left, sailing roughly 415 feet, and appeared to hit the side of the house across the street.

“That’s a testament to him, showing pretty good fortitude,” Diggs said. “He traveled all day and he comes in and makes an impact. Was he a little tired? Maybe. But I think adrenaline takes over.”

Matos’ homer was the only tally on the scoreboard for the Brewers heading into the final frame, as the hosts trailed 6-1 after six. But a couple of singles by Mejia and Edgardo Rivera, along with a Billings error, loaded the bags for Castillo’s heroics. Castillo’s line-drive triple one-hopped the wall in right, scoring three runs to cut into Billings' lead.

Elvis Rubio then struck an RBI single for his first hit of the night to make it 6-5, but Matos struck out swinging to end the comeback.

Eliza Wiley Photo, Helena Independent Record - Francisco Castillo slides into home plate just before the ball Saturday night putting the Brewers up 5-1 in the fourth inning against the Billings Mustangs.

Hermida is red-hot, and if Ryan Braun's injury requires a DL stint, one wonders if Hermida might leapfrog Caleb Gindl and find his way on to the 40-man roster...

Final: Jackson 7, @Huntsville 6, ten innings

Stars lose back and forth extra innings game

Steve Jarnicki, Huntsville Stars

Huntsville, AL - The Jackson Generals won a back and forth game with the Huntsville Stars Saturday night at Joe Davis Stadium. There were four ties and five lead changes. Jackson eventually won the game 7-6 in ten innings over the Stars in Huntsville to even the five game series at 1-1.

Julio Morban hit the Generals second home run of the day in the top of the tenth inning against Stars reliever Kevin Shackelford (1-2) breaking a 6-6 tie and giving the Generals a 7-6 lead. Shackelford ended up taking the loss out of the Stars bullpen.

The Stars had runners on the corners with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but Richard Vargas struck out Josh Prince to end the game. Vargas earned his fifth save of the season.

Jackson took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Patrick Kivlehan grounded out to second base scoring Leon Landry.

The Stars came back in the bottom of the first tying the game at 1-1 when Robinzon Diaz singled past the shortstop and into centerfield scoring Kentrail Davis.

The Stars took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the second. Davis stroked a two-out two-run double to left field giving the Stars a 3-1 advantage.

Dario Pizzano tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the fourth on at two-run triple against Huntsville starter Jed Bradley.

Bradley took a no decision after pitching 6.2 innings allowing eight hits on four runs.

D.J. Peterson gave the Generals the lead again on his solo home run that just cleared the wall in left center. It was Peterson's first Double-A home run.

The Stars tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth on a Nick Ramirez RBI single to right field scoring Prince.

The Stars recaptured the lead in the bottom of the seventh against Moises Hernandez. Diaz broke the 4-4 tie on an RBI single scoring Nick Shaw to make it 5-4. Erik Komatsu then followed with a groundout back to the pitcher which scored Davis putting the Stars ahead 6-4.

In the top of the eighth, Tim Dillard hit Kivlehan to start the inning. Morban then singled to right field. Davis the right fielder misplayed the ball allowing Kivlehan to score from first base cutting it to a one run game.

Dillard struck out the next two batters before David Goforth entered the game.

With two outs, and Morban at third base, Pizzano hit a double to right center scoring Morban tying the game at 6-6.

Kyle Hunter improved to 2-3 as he earned the win out of the Generals bullpen after tossing 1.1 scoreless innings.

The Stars (8-9, 54-33) and Generals (5-12,36-50) are tied 1-1 in their five game series. Game three of the series will be Sunday at Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville. The Stars will have RHP Drew Gagnon (5-3, 3.14) on the mound. Jackson will send RHP Victor Sanchez (3-4, 4.30) to the hill. The game can be heard starting at 3:45 pm CDT on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM and wtkiradio.com.

Huntsville Box Score

Jed Bradley pitched 6.2 innings -- eight hits, four runs, one walk, six K's, one HR.

Overall, 11 K's vs. just that one walk for Stars hurlers, but the seven runs (six earned) sullies that mark.

Kentrail Davis and Nick Shaw each drew three walks, as Davis also doubled and filled the box score, unfortunately including that key error. Kentrail's OBP up to .381. The Brewers still own Davis' rights for two more seasons, as he was late signing and missed his would-be rookie 2009 season.

Welcome back, Adam Weisenburger, walk, sacrifice bunt, run scored.

Huntsville Game Log

From a fan perspective, nine different half-innings saw a run (or two) scored, Great game, if unsatisfying loss...

Final: @AZL Reds 7, AZL Brewers 2

Maryvale Box Score

Five Brewer errors, a few of which contributed to four unearned runs, spelled doom here.

The A-Crew offense only managed four hits (one a Jake Gatewood double), five walks, and 14 K's.

All those K's seem to be a pattern, so a review of Arizona League team batting stats shows the Brewers with the 2nd-most in the league. You'll also notice on those sortable stats that the team is in the bottom 3rd of the league in all the slash-line numbers.

CF Troy Stokes did walk twice to boost his OBP to .345.

The Brewers' team ERA is a flashy 3.27 (league (team) pitching stats), and despite Saturday's situation, the Maryvale arms have limited the unearned runs as well.

20-year-old Dominican RHP Milton Gomez has been the biggest victim of defensive lapses, and was so in this one as well. Three 2014 college draft arms followed, as you'll see in the box.

Maryvale Game Log

The ugly frame --

AZL Reds Bottom of the 3rd

Jose Siri triples (1) on a fly ball to center fielder Monte Harrison.

Bryson Smith reaches on a fielding error by second baseman Daniel Leonardo. Jose Siri scores.

Gavin LaValley singles on a fly ball to center fielder Monte Harrison. Bryson Smith scores. Gavin LaValley to 3rd. Throwing error by center fielder Monte Harrison.

Reydel Medina out on a sacrifice fly to center fielder Monte Harrison. Gavin LaValley scores.

Narciso Crook strikes out swinging.

Paul Kronenfeld homers (1) on a fly ball to right field.

Morgan Lofstrom doubles (3) on a fly ball to left fielder Troy Stokes.

Josciel Veras walks.

Hector Vargas lines out to right fielder Carlos Belonis.

I wonder if Kentrail might be in-line in the not so distant future to get a chance to be the 5th OFer instead of Schafer? Schafer was always a little bit light on the walks, but if one goes back to his last full year in the minors in 2012 his BB rate dropped a little, while his K rate shot way up. Since then he hasn't been able seemingly to get a high enough batting average.
