Notes from Steve in Huntsville --

The Stars lost their fourth straight game for only the second time this season. The other four game losing streak was June 6th-9th, all against Mobile…During this current losing streak, they have managed to score a grand total of five runs. The Stars are 5-29 (.172) with runners in scoring position during this slide. Even though the Stars offense has sputtered as of late, in their last six games, the Stars offense is still batting .284 (57-201). Out of the 57 hits, only 12 have gone for extra bases… The series loss to Mississippi was only their fourth series loss of the season out of seventeen and only their second where they dropped four out of five.

Huntsville starters in their last five starts are 0-4 with a 7.96 ERA (23 ER, 26 IP) Two out of those five starts have been quality starts by Jacob Barnes and Drew Gagnon….D’Vontrey Richardson went 2-3 with a double Thursday. He has now hit safely in nine of his last eleven games. Excluding his pinch hit at bat Monday, Richardson has recorded a hit in his last six starts. In his last eleven games, he is hitting .385 (15-39 with 1 hr and 3 RBI)…Kentrail Davis batted leadoff for the 26th consecutive game. In his games as the leadoff man, he is (32-101, .317) with an on base percentage of .421. This season Davis has batted first, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth and has best results have come out of the leadoff spot.

Josh Prince pinch hit and went 0-1. After going 1-22 recently, Prince is now 11 for his last 32 (.344)… Nick Shaw went 2-3 with a pair of doubles to extend his on base streak to 13 straight games. In the second half of the season through 10 games, Shaw is batting .393 compared to just .229 in the first half of the season…Robinson Diaz started behind the plate and became the 5th different Stars catcher this year to start a game… The Stars did not homer last night, but still have hit 16 homeruns in their last 20 games…Since the Stars clinched the 1st half championship they’ve gone 14-13.

Final: Helena 5, Great Falls 3

Helena rallies late, wins 5-3

By Dustin Daniel / Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers (8-10) overcame a two-run deficit on Friday night to top the Great Falls Voyagers (10-9) with a 5-3 win.

Helena took the first lead of the ballgame, coming up with a lone run in the top of the first inning. Brandon Diaz hit a one-out single off Voyagers starter Dane Stone and later scored on an RBI single from Greg McCall. Stone was lights out in the start for Great Falls, pitching seven innings, giving up one run on four hits and striking out 10 batters. He would retire the last 11 batters he saw. Stone left with the lead, but would not receive a decision.

Great Falls responded with a run in the bottom of the first to tie things up. Hunter Jones and Jake Peter each came up with triples off of Jorge Ortega. Peter's would score Jones for the lone run of the inning. Ortega pitched five innings, giving up three runs on eight hits and whiffing three Great Falls batters.

The Voyagers then took the lead in the second when they added two runs to their total and pulled ahead 3-1. Back-to-back base hits to start the inning put ducks on the pond and both would score on RBIs from Ethan Gross and Ryan Jones.

The score would stay 3-1 for the next five innings as Stone got into the zone, hurling a season-high 10 strikeouts. The Brewers pitching staff would put up their own streak as Jorge Ortega and Wesley Cox (1-0) retired 11 straight batters as well.

Helena reclaimed the lead in the top of the eighth with three runs. Back-to-back singles followed by a hit batter and a wild pitch scored a run and a series of sacrifices and Voyagers mistakes brought Edgardo Rivera, Gregory Munoz and Brandon Diaz across the plate.

The Brew Crew added an insurance run in the ninth as Rivera posted his second run scored of the game.

Luke Curtis picked up his second save of the year, pitching a clean ninth.

The Brewers now travel back to Helena to take on the Billings Mustangs in a three-game series over two days. There is a double-header Saturday at Kindrick with first pitch in game one set for 5:05 p.m. Fans can purchase a general admission ticket good for both games for just $2.

Blazek allowed just one hit in 5 1/3 innings while striking out six and not allowing a walk to pick up his first victory in 2014.

Alfredo Figaro, Brent Leach, and Donovan Hand followed out of the Nashville bullpen to clinch the victory, combining to allow just two hits and no walks over the remaining 3 2/3 innings. It marks the Sounds' league-leading ninth shutout victory of the season.

Nashville Boxscore

The shortest game summary of the year...

I have a love/hate thing going with Michael Blazek, this

sums it up well. More than once I've been ready to move on from him...

I apologize for missing the Hunter Morris injury, I should have been on top of that from the get go.

Nashville Recap

If you like good pitching this is the game log for you, Blazek faced the minimum thanks to a DP in the 1st.

Rattlers declare victory with 5-run ninth

Wisconsin stuns River Bandits with late comeback

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

DAVENPORT, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored five times in the top of the ninth inning to defeat the Quad Cities River Bandits 5-3 on Friday night at Modern Woodmen Park. Steve Halcomb's two-out, two-run double broke a 2-2 tie and sent the Rattlers to the win. Preston Gainey struck out ten over seven innings for the Timber Rattlers.

Wisconsin (45-39 overall, 9-6 second half) had a shot to score first. Johnny Davis started the game with a walk and Chris McFarland followed with a single. Michael Ratterree's chopper to short was fielded by Dayne Parker, who threw to third. It appeared that Bandits third baseman Marc Wik caught the ball in foul territory off the bag and missed the bag as he stepped to it for the force out. Davis and Wisconsin manager Matt Erickson were unhappy when Davis was ruled out by the base umpire who was positioned on the infield grass with a tough angle to see whether Wik got the base or not.

Clint Coulter continued the inning against River Bandits starter Adrian Houser with a single to shallow right to load the bases with one out. But, Houser escaped the inning with a strikeout and a force play at second. The hit by Coulter was the last hit Wisconsin would get until the ninth.

Houser allowed one more runner, a two-out hit batsman on Rafael Neda in the fourth, over his final five innings of work.

Jose Fernandez broke the scoreless tie with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth. Brett Phillips started the inning by reaching on an error. Gainey got the next two outs. Then, Fernandez homered to the left field berm and the River Bandits (43-41, 8-7) were up 2-0.

Gainey went seven innings, allowed two hits, and walked four. He allowed those two unearned runs, but set a new single game high for strikeouts in a game as a professional with his ten punchouts. However, it appeared he was headed for his third straight loss.

Tyler Brunnemann relieved Houser in the seventh and worked two perfect innings to maintain the 2-0 lead.

Quad Cities went to Frederick Tiburcio to close out the game in the ninth. McFarland singled back up the middle on an 0-2 pitch to start the inning for the first Wisconsin hit since the first inning. Ratterree and Coulter walked to load the bases. Brennan's sacrifice fly to right was deep enough to score McFarland. Ratterree tagged and went to third. Coulter saw the throw going through to third and he took second base. Rafael Neda walked to reload the bases and that was all for Tiburcio.

Andrew Walter took over on the mound and faced Omar Garcia first. Garcia lined an 0-1 pitch that looked like a sure hit to right-center. Fernandez made a leaping grab and got the ball in his glove for a moment. The ball popped free and rolled towards second.

Coulter held the base to make sure the line drive got through, but took off for third when the ball dropped out of the glove of Fernandez. The Bandits second baseman corralled the ball and stepped on second for the force play on Neda. His throw to first was late to get Garcia. The throw to third by first baseman Jon Kemmer was too late to get Coulter for the third out. Since the River Bandits could not turn the game-ending double play on the sequence, Ratterree scored the tying run from third.

Garcia stole second to get into scoring position with Steve Halcomb at the plate. Then, Halcomb drilled a hanging 1-2 pitch down the line in left for a double that scored both Coulter and Garcia to put the Rattlers up 4-2.

Angel Ortega followed with an RBI single to score Halcomb and the Rattlers were up 5-2.

Tyler Spurlin, who took over for Gainey to start the eighth, went back out for the bottom of the ninth and allowed a double to Ronnie Mitchell. Brian Holberton singled with one out to knock in Mitchell to cut Wisconsin's lead to two runs. Spurlin got Kemmer to fly out to left for the second out and struck out pinch-hitter Brett Booth to close out the River Bandits.

Friday was the second time the Timber Rattlers have won a game when trailing heading into the ninth inning this season.

The series continues on Saturday night at Modern Woodmen Park. Anthony Banda (4-5, 4.40) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Quad Cities will counter with Chris Lee (3-5, 4.27). Game time is 6:00pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 5:40pm. The game is also available to subscribers of MiLB.TV.

Final: @Huntsville 4, Jackson 3

Diaz's Hit Leads Stars To Victory

Steve Jarnicki, Huntsville Stars

Huntsville, AL - Designated hitter Robinzon Diaz broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning with an RBI double down the left field line giving the Stars a 4-3 lead. That proved to be the final score as the Stars beat the Jackson Generals in front of a sellout crowd of 10,596 Friday night at Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville.

The Generals got on the scoreboard first in the top of the first inning against Huntsville starter Jacob Barnes.

The Generals got four straight singles including back to back RBI singles by D.J. Peterson and Julio Morban putting them ahead 2-0.

The Stars tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the second. With two outs and two on base, Shea Vucinich lined a two-run single over the third baseman's head, scoring Lucas May and Greg Hopkins.

The Generals recaptured the lead in the top of the third inning on a two-out RBI single by Morban putting Jackson back in front 3-2.

The Stars tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Josh Prince doubled to left field scoring Yadiel Rivera which knotted the game at 3-3.

The Stars then took their only lead of the night in the seventh on Diaz's clutch hit to put the Stars ahead 4-3.

The Stars received excellent bullpen work from the duo of Greg Holle and David Goforth.

Holle, who earned the win to improve to 1-1, threw 1.2 scoreless innings.

Goforth, nailed down his 17th save of the season after a two inning save. Goforth struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to end the Stars four game losing streak.

Barnes, who took a no decision, worked 5.1 innings. He allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits.

The Stars will have LHP Jed Bradley (1-4, 4.80) on the mound. Jackson will send RHP Stephen Landazuri (3-2, 3.55) to the hill. The Great Falls Tribune's game story is from the Voyagers' perspective, but includes this Helena text --

Michael Blanke came on in the eighth, and the wheels fell off the apple cart. Edgardo Rivera bunted his way on base, and Francisco Castillo executed a perfect hit-and-run single to right, moving Rivera to third. Castillo then stole second, but when the ball eluded Zach Stoner behind the plate, not only did Rivera score, but Castillo kept going right to third. Munoz then tried to score on a passed ball but was thrown out by Stoner to Blanke covering the plate. Gregory Munoz was then hit by a pitch, and Poe had seen enough of Blanke and brought in Connor Walsh.

Walsh then walked Brandon Diaz as Munoz took third and later scored when Tucker Neuhaus reached on a fielder’s choice. Both runners advanced to second and third on a wild pitch, before Ryan Jones’ error where the ball skipped right through the wickets.

Helena added some insurance in the ninth as Rivera walked with one out, stole second, took third on Castillo’s single to short and scored on a grounder by Munoz.

Luke Curtis finished off the Voaygers with a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his second save as the win went to reliever Wesley Cox (1-0).
