Baseball America --

PITCHER OF THE DAY: Tyler Wagner, rhp — high Class A Brevard County (Brewers)

A sinker-slider guy whom the Brewers tapped with their fourth-round choice in 2012, Wagner has had himself a fine season. On Tuesday, he was superb. He tossed seven innings of three-hit shutout ball, with three walks and seven strikeouts mixed in. He hasn't had an ERA above 2.04 in any month this season.

Brewers' farmhand Tyler Wagner leads the way in Tuesday shutout of Daytona Cubs

By Sean Kernan, Daytona News-Journal

The Daytona Cubs have seen enough of Brevard County pitcher Tyler Wagner this season.

The 6-foot-3, 194-pound right-hander stymied Daytona for the third time in four starts this season, giving him 12-scoreless innings in his last two outings against the Cubs.

Wagner spun seven scoreless innings and struck out seven to lead the Manatees in a 3-0 shutout at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Tuesday night. He said his familiarity with Daytona's lineup and the Jack's comfortable mound were instrumental in his success.

“I love the mound that they have here,” said Wagner, who gave up just three hits and walked three. “It's kind of higher. You're able to work through the ball and stay on top of it.”

Overall, Wagner improved to 7-4 with a 1.81 ERA and extended his personal scoreless innings streak to 19.

“I was able to pitch to my strengths,” Wagner said. “I got ahead with first-pitch strikes and was able to mix up my three pitches. I was able to stay focused on the mound every pitch.”

The Manatees, an affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, took over first place in the Florida State League North Division with a 9-3 second-half record. The Cubs slipped to second place with an 8-4 mark.

Brevard County got an unearned run in the second when Wes Darvill booted a ball with a runner on second base. Cameron Garfield, who had led off with a double, scored as the ball bounced into shallow left field.

The Manatees added two runs on Mike Garza's two-run single in the sixth inning.

Daytona starter Jose Rosario (4-5) allowed just four hits and two earned runs in 5.2 innings.

Daytona's offense never got on track. The Cubs managed just five hits and bounced into three double plays.

“You have to give Tyler Wagner all the credit,” Daytona manager Dave Keller said. “He's faced us four times and has made adjustments from outing to outing against our guys. And at the same time, I'm really disappointed in our ability to make adjustments offensively.”

Keller has been frustrated by the Cubs' approach at the plate in situations and the number of fastballs taken for strikes.

“We take too many fastballs for strikes with runners in scoring position and third-strike calls,” he said.

The Cubs were able to keep the game close in large part to four terrific catches by corner outfielders Bijan Rademacher and Pin-Chieh Chen.

Rademacher stole a two-run homer from Nick Delmonico and made a running over-the-shoulder grab with two runners on base in the ninth. Chen, the only Cub with two hits, made a diving catch to end the ninth inning and went into foul territory, clipping a padded fence corner near the visiting bullpen, for an out in the fifth.

WEBER HANDCUFFS STARS

Steve Jarnicki, Huntsville Stars

Pearl, MS - Mississippi Braves RHP Ryan Weber (3-2) turned in eight dominant innings leading the Braves past the Huntsville Stars 5-1 Wednesday night at Trustmark Park in Pearl.

Weber, who was making a spot start for the injured J.R. Graham, allowed just three hits in his eight innings. The only run he allowed was a Josh Prince RBI single in the top of the fourth inning which tied the game at 1-1.

Mississippi took the lead for good against Huntsville starter Brent Suter (7-6) in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Kyle Kubitza, who went 3-4 with 3 RBI, broke the tie on a two-run triple giving the Braves a 3-1 lead.

Daniel Castro and Kyle Wren each provided RBI singles giving the Braves a 5-1 advantage.

Suter, who did not make it out of the fifth inning, gave up five runs in 4.1 innings on the mound. Suter also walked three and struck out two for the Stars who lost their third straight game.

The Braves (9-5, 48-35) lead the Stars (7-7, 53-31) 3-1 in their five game series. The series finale will be Thursday. RHP Andy Moye (4-0, 2.80) will start for the Stars. Huntsville Box Score

LHP Brent Suter's ERA by month prior to this tough July debut -- April 1.80, May 3.16, June 6.20. Suter also isn't faring well vs. LH bats this season, so he'll need to turn things around.

The Braves' Ryan Weber with Rick Porcello-like dominance here -- 8 IP, 0 K, 1 BB.

Sounds Blank 'Birds, 5-0

Nashville's Pagnozzi Belts Two Homers; Nelson Picks Up 10th Win

Nashville Sounds

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/3/0/6/82840306/cuts/MPS_1737_Large_na124duk_6skoolul.jpg

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds (46-41) extended their win streak to six games by shutting out the Memphis Redbirds, 5-0, Wednesday night at Greer Stadium, powered by Matt Pagnozzi's two-homer night and another quality start from Jimmy Nelson.

Leading 2-0 in the 4th inning, Pagnozzi added to the Sounds' lead with a solo home run off the guitar scoreboard. The shot was the 31-year-old catcher's seventh of the season.

Pagnozzi continued his attack on the scoreboard in the 6th inning with another dinger off the big guitar. The solo homer made it a 4-0 game for Nashville and marks Pagnozzi's fourth multi-homer game of his career.

Guiding the Sounds from the mound was Pacific Coast League triple-crown candidate Jimmy Nelson (10-2), who served up 6 2/3 scoreless frames for Nashville to pick up his league-leading 10th win of the season.

He limited the 'Birds to four hits on the night, twirling five strikeouts to bring his season total to a league-leading 110. Nelson's ERA drops from 1.66 to 1.56, which ties him with former Sound Brad Mills for best in the PCL.

Nelson has now worked quality outings in 15 of his 16 PCL games this season.

Nashville strung together three two-out knocks in the first inning to take an initial 2-0 lead on Memphis. Outfielder Jeremy Hermida drove a double to dead centerfield to score Jason Rogers 2-for-4, before being driven home himself on Sean Halton's RBI single.

Hermida has reached base in each of his last 27 home games, marking the longest such streak among Pacific Coast League batters this season.

Shortstop Hector Gomez connected for an RBI double in the 8th inning for the Sounds final run.

Sounds relievers Alfredo Figaro and Jeremy Jeffress combined with Nelson for the team's PCL-leading eighth shutout victory.

The win streak matches the Sounds' season-best, first winning six in a row from April 30 to May 4. The Sounds have recorded five runs or more in each of their last nine victories.

The Sounds will look to sweep the Redbirds in Thursday's homestand finale at 7:05 p.m. RHP Taylor Jungmann (4-4, 5.14) will take the hill for Nashville opposite the Redbirds' LHP John Gast (1-3, 10.13). Broadcaster Jeff Hem has the call on 102.5 The Game.

Nashville Boxscore

Woohoo just beat the Cards!

Nashville pitching limited the Redbirds to just 4 hits, 1 for extra bases, Wong and Piscotty picked up a hit a piece.

The only thing Jimmy Nelson hasn't done this season is hit, he's still 0 for the year, but the offense hasn't needed any kind of contribution from him and pounded out 12 hits tonight.

In Jim Henderson's absence, there isn't much in terms of big league bullpen heat (Kintzler, Wooten). Jeremy Jeffress (and for that matter, Dustin Molleken), fit the bill. Jeffress three ground ball outs in a perfect 9th.

Final: Daytona 3, Brevard County 4

Delmonico's blast sparks comeback as 'Tees beat Cubs, 4-3

Sixth straight win pulls Manatees one win shy of claiming I-95 Trophy for first time since 2007

By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. - Despite falling behind 2-0 and 3-1 in the first half of the ballgame, the Brevard County Manatees rallied back to win their season-high sixth straight, 4-3 over the Daytona Cubs on Wednesday night at Space Coast Stadium.

It was a mammoth blast off the bat of Nicky Delmonico that sparked the turn around. Trailing 2-0 with two out in the bottom of the fourth, Delmonico walloped a 1-1 pitch from Cubs starter Justin Amlung (1-2, 5.48 ERA) over the right field wall for a solo home run. It was the lefty swinging third baseman's fourth home run of the year and it trimmed the lead to one.

After the Cubs (8-5 second half, 34-46 overall) grabbed that run back in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Dan Vogelbach, the Manatees (10-3, 46-33) bats began to chip away again.

Victor Roache led off the bottom of the frame with a walk and Mike Garza followed with a single to center. It looked as if things took a turn for the worst when Alfredo Rodriguez hit a slow tapper towards third base. Jordan Hankins stepped on third to get the force on Roache and then threw across the diamond to try and turn the double play. However, Hankins' throw was wild and it skipped past the first baseman Vogelbach. That allowed Garza to advance to third and Rodriguez to second with one out. Nathan Orf made the Cubs pay as a groundout to short allowed Garza to scamper home and trim the lead back to one.

The Brevard bats managed to tie the game an inning later. After Tyrone Taylor led off the frame with an infield single to third, Cubs manager Dave Keller went to the bullpen and brought in right-hander Starling Peralta. Michael Reed greeted the new pitcher rudely, as he cranked a ground-rule double to left-center field to put the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position. After Delmonico struck out, Cameron Garfield came through with a unique sacrifice fly. The 'Tees catcher lofted a high fly ball into shallow right field, but Daytona right fielder Bijan Rademacher did not read the ball well. Second baseman Gioskar Amaya ranged out to make the play, but his momentum took him away from home plate. Noticing that, Taylor broke for home and beat the off balance throw from Amaya to tie the game, 3-3.

The Manatees train kept rolling, as Brevard completed the comeback in the seventh. Once again, Brevard got the first two men on thanks to a Garza double and a Rodriguez single. However, a bobble by Zeke DeVoss out in left field allowed Rodriguez to advance to second to force Daytona to move its entire infield in. This loomed large, as on a 1-0 pitch, Orf hit a ground ball to second base. Garza immediately broke for home, but the second baseman Amaya could not field it cleanly. The ball caromed off the infielder's glove and rolled towards second base. Amaya was able to recover and get the out at first, but Garza managed to score and give the Manatees its first and only lead of the night, 4-3.

Brevard County's bullpen was stellar as Chad Pierce and Mark Williams slammed the door on any potential comeback.

Pierce, who took over for starter Jorge Lopez (8-3, 2.83) at the start of the seventh, scattered three singles and struck out three over two shutout frames en route to his second win of the year.

In the ninth, Williams was spotless once again. The right-hander retired the side in order to close out the win and pick up his seventh Florida State League save of the year. After tonight, Williams has yet to allow an earned run in 13 innings with the Manatees and has not allowed a hit in his last four outings.

Delmonico and Garza led the charge for the Manatees offensively, as both players recorded multi-hit nights. Delmonico finished the ballgame with a 2-for-3 performance with a single and walk to accompany his solo blast. The Tennessee native is now hitting .421 (8-for-19) against the Cubs and has hit three of his four home runs against them. As for Garza, he collected his fourth straight multi-hit game with a 2-for-3 night at the plate.

Lopez picked up the no decision, but deserves credit for a gutty performance. Despite tying a career-high with five walks, the right-hander kept the Manatees in the ballgame. The former second round pick allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits and struck out five.

Brevard will travel back to Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark for the third game of this series with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. With a victory tomorrow, the Manatees will clinch the season series against the Cubs and take home the I-95 Trophy for the first time since 2007. Hobbs Johnson (9-6, 3.23) will get the start for Brevard County against fellow left-hander Nathan Dorris (3-4, 4.54).

Kernels pitchers strikeout 14 Rattlers

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Cedar Rapids Kernels grabbed an early lead against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and their pitchers would not let it go on Wednesday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The Kernels topped Wisconsin 6-1.

The Kernels (35-47 overall, 4-8 second half) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Zack Granite started the game with a double. Chad Christensen singled with one out to drive in Granite. The Kernels loaded the bases on a single by Bryan Haar and a two-out walk to Jason Kanzler. Then, Alex Swim lined a single to right to knock in Christensen and Haar.

Cedar Rapids added to their lead in the top of the second. Granite scored from third on a wild pitch by Rattlers starting pitcher Barrett Astin.

Swim struck again in the top of the fifth with a two-out single to drive in JD Williams from second base and the Kernels were up 5-0.

Wisconsin (43-39, 7-6) got to Kernels starter Lewis Thorpe in the bottom of the fifth. Rafael Neda singled to start the inning. Thorpe struck out the next two batters, but gave up singles to Johnny Davis and Chris McFarland to load the bases. Thorpe was replaced one out shy of qualifying for the win. Chris Mazza took over to face Michael Ratterree.

Ratterree sent a hard grounder to third that Haar made a nice play on after a tough hop. But, Haar dropped the ball making the transfer to throw to first and all hands were safe with Neda scoring. Clint Coulter was next and he sent a hard grounder to third, too. But, Haar fielded this ball cleanly and stepped on third to force McFarland for the final out.

Cedar Rapids tacked on an unearned run against Astin in the top of the sixth. Tanner Vavra reached on an error. There were two errors on one play after a grounder off the bat of Ryan Walker that put Vavra on third base. Engleb Vielma slow chopper to short allowed Vavra to score the final run of the game.

Four Cedar Rapids pitchers combined to strike out the Timber Rattlers 14 times and held the Rattlers to an unearned run on seven hits. Thorpe recorded eight strikeouts in 4-2/3 innings. Mazza had three in 1-1/3 innings. Alex Muren (2) and Hudson Boyd (1) finished off the Rattlers in the final three innings.

The final game of the series is Thursday night. Tyler Alexander (4-3, 3.67) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Ryan Eades (5-7, 6.17) is set to start for the Kernels. Game time is 7:05pm.

Wisconsin Boxscore

I don't think I've seen Barrett Astin pitch well all season, he's had good games but never when I've been watching. His WP that allowed a run in the 2nd never appeared to hit the dirt until after Coulter got a glove on it, I thought that should have been a PB as it was a relatively decent pitch off the corner. I was multi-tasking doing my P90x so I didn't rewind and watch the pitch again. Clint Terry was very solid in relief.

Paul Eshleman hasn't had a hit since June 15th though he hasn't gotten regular playing time since Cooper came back down to WI, regardless that's got to be tough. Michael Ratterree continues to watch FBs on the outside corner, he just doesn't like that pitch at all so he's going to have to adjust because that's where most A ball pitchers are going to try and work. Ratterree did make a very nice running over the shoulder catch late in the game.

Johnny Davis (2-4,BB) and Rafeal Neda (2-4) had the multi-hit games for the T-Rats.

This was perhaps the poorest defensive effort I've witnessed by the Rattlers all season.

Diggs ran Helena out of this game.

I don't know if stealing bases is now a front office philosophy or if Diggs thinks he has a team of speedsters (which he doesn't) but the second inning was bad game calling. Neither Sharkey nor Munoz had a chance against the left-handed Freudenberg, neither could get a decent lead off of 1B and neither were even close to being safe at 2B.

I have seen some improvement of Diggs with his in-game management but stealing bases isn't one of them. In 16 games Helena has 15 CS vs 19 SB.

Props to Zelous for the call up ... never should have been released.

Always appreciate the first-hand insights, MTB.

Technically, Wheeler was removed from the 40-man roster and the Orioles swooped in with a waiver claim (March of 2012). This is Zelous' 8th pro season, so even if he had cleared waivers in 2012, he likely would have left via minor league free agency last fall.

Fooling around with baseball reference this morning. Who's walking for the Brewers? Yunior Santana getting a walk every 3.8 plate appearances. Monte Harrison every 4.8. Okay those guys are in rookie ball with few at bats against wild pitchers.

Then you have Michael Reed 5.2 PAs and Taylor Brennan 5.6 PAs. Other notables: David Denson 5.8, Nick Shaw 6.0, Brandon Diaz 6.0, Logan Schafer 6.4 (minors only), Shawn Zarraga 6.5, Clint Coulter 6.6.

On the other end is Mike Garza 39.6 although he's shown a good hit tool this year. Nick Delmonico 23.5, Johnnie Davis 20.2, Hunter Morris 19.4.
