Brewers put it all together for home win

by Amber Kuehn, Helena Independent Record

You know those days where it seems like everything is going your way? It was that kind of night for the Helena Brewers.

The Brewers executed a hit-and-run, a suicide squeeze and stole a base, displaying the team speed manager Tony Diggs has been talking about. Helena’s pitchers had another solid night, and the offense pounded out 11 hits against a struggling Great Falls squad.

The end result Tuesday was a 3-1 victory by the home team at Kindrick Legion Field, as the Brewers handed the reeling Voyagers their fifth straight defeat and ended a two-game skid of their own. It was also redemption for last week, when Great Falls swept Helena here.

“We’ve kind of struggled at home, so it’s good to get a win,” said Helena left fielder Mitch Meyer.

It was another phenomenal outing by the Brewers pitching staff. Starter J.B. Kole didn’t give up a hit until the fourth inning, and Josh Uhen and Zach Hirsch pitched five frames of shutout ball in relief to earn the win and the save, respectively. Helena is now 4-0 when the bullpen doesn’t allow a run.

“J.B. did a good job starting us off,” Diggs said. “He established his fastball early, and that’s what we’ve been preaching to these guys.”

Kole retired nine straight Voyagers batters at one point, but gave up three singles and a run in the fourth inning to end his evening. Uhen and Hirsch were superb in relief, combining for seven strikeouts.

Hirsch, a 19th-round pick out of Nebraska, said it was one of those games where every pitch he threw seemed to be spot on. He also credited the defense behind him, as well as his catcher, Greg McCall.

“Greg called a great game,” said the southpaw, who has so far given up just one hit in his professional career.

McCall saw his five-game hitting streak come to an end, but his teammates more than made up for it. First baseman Dustin DeMuth was 3-for-4 with a run scored, Eric Williams was 2 for 4 and Luis Aviles went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI triple.

Aviles’ triple in the second inning bounced off the wall in right-center field to score Williams all the way from first, putting the hosts on the scoreboard early. Helena hung three more hits on Voyagers starter Zach Thompson in the third inning, and Elvis Rubio’s RBI single made it 2-0 Brewers.

Jake Peter had an RBI single to trim Helena’s lead an inning later, but that was all the offense Great Falls could muster Tuesday. The Voyagers were just 1 for 8 with runners in scoring position, as Brewers pitchers worked out of jam after jam, and second baseman Francisco Castillo always seemed to come up with one big defensive play after another.

Desperately in need of an insurance run in the sixth to build some separation, DeMuth reached on a leadoff single. He then went to third on a two-base throwing error by center fielder Chevy Clarke. Then with one out, Williams laid down a beautiful suicide-squeeze bunt that just barely stayed fair to score DeMuth for the final run. It looked as though the ball would cross the chalk, but it stopped just inches away from rolling foul, much to Williams’ relief. The Brewers right fielder clapped his hands with excitement when the umpire signaled it was fair.

“He executed it perfectly,” Diggs said after the game.

DeMuth upped his Pioneer League-leading batting average to .444 with his big night. He said the entire team is seeing the ball well right now.

“We’ve just gotta keep playing hard,” he said. “It’s just a matter of trying to attack fastballs early in the count.”

The Brewers (7-8) will look to win back-to-back games when they again host the Voyagers (8-8) tonight at 7:05. Great Falls lefty Chris Freudenberg is scheduled to take the mound, while Chad Thompson will get the start for the Brewers.

It occurred to me while I was watching the T-Rats tonight that I complete forgot to mention Zach Quintana threw a very nice change on a couple of occasions last night, it was the sharpest secondary pitch he's had all year.
