Final: Brevard County 5, Clearwater 3

Brevard rides fifth inning rally to sweep

By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees

CLEARWATER, Fla - It took a two-out rally in the fifth and a big triple from Michael Reed, but the Brevard County Manatees completed a three-game sweep of the Clearwater Threshers on Sunday with a 5-3 win at Bright House Field.

The top of the fifth started rather pedestrian for the 'Tees. With Clearwater (4-7 second half, 21-58 overall) leading 3-1, Threshers starting pitcher Miguel Nunez retired the first two batters of the inning. At that point, Brevard County (8-3, 44-33) broke out the bats.

After Nathan Orf watched a first-pitch fastball whiz past his chin, the 'Tees leadoff man ripped a single to left. Orlando Arcia came up next and smacked a double to put runners on second and third with two outs.

Nunez (2-6, 6.22 ERA) was already in trouble, but he was about to make it worse. The righty uncorked a wild pitch that scored Orf and brought Arcia to third with the tying run. Tyrone Taylor came up with a chance to tie the game and he did so in surprising fashion.

Taylor dropped a picture perfect bunt down the third base line. Arcia scored easily from third and third baseman K.C. Serna could do nothing but pick up the ball and toss it back to the pitcher, as Taylor reached with an RBI bunt single to tie the game at 3-3.

For the second day in a row, the Manatees had mounted a comeback against Clearwater, but they were not done that inning. Reed, who hit his first triple of the year the previous night, slammed another three-bagger into right-center. Taylor scored the go-ahead run and Brevard County took a 4-3 lead.

The visitors held onto the lead with some quality pitching. Starter Damien Magnifico (5-4, 3.38 ERA) tied a season-high with six strikeouts over five innings to set himself up for the win. The righty allowed three runs on five hits and left with the 'Tees on top by one run.

After Magnifico exited, Mike Strong finished the job. The southpaw reliever pitched four shutout innings for the second straight outing. Strong struck out five Threshers, did not walk a batter and only allowed two hits, as he recorded his third save of the season.

Mike Garza had provided the Manatees with an insurance run in the eighth inning on a one-out RBI double. That two-bagger capped a big day for Garza, who had also driven in Brevard's first run with a double in the fourth, finished 3-for-4. The first baseman hit .429 (6-for-14) during the three-game sweep.

Brevard County has an off-day on Monday, but the 'Tees hit the road on Tuesday to face the Daytona Cubs. Tyler Wagner (6-4, 1.96 ERA) is scheduled to start against Cubs right-hander Jose Rosario (4-4, 4.96 ERA) First pitch at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark will be at 7:05 p.m.

Brevard County Box Score

Mike Garza with another big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs batted in. He's up to .306 on the season now after today's performance. Michael Reed had a double and a triple while Tyrone Taylor and Brandon Macias each went 2-for-4. Nathan Orf reached base three more times with a single, a walk and a hit-by-pitch. It was the 14th time this season that Orf has been plunked. Orlando Arcia and Parker Berberet each added a double.

Damien Magnifico started and went five innings, giving up three runs and striking out six to improve his record to 5-4. Michael Strong was brilliant in his four innings of work, giving up just two hits and no runs while striking out five to earn the save.

The 'Tees have won four in a row and seven of their last eight. Granted, players like Garza, Orf and Macias are old for the league, but the recent play of youngsters like Arcia and Taylor is exciting to see, and even Victor Roache has hit safely in nine of his last ten games. The combination of veteran players and talented young prospects should make for an entertaining second half and hopefully a playoff run.

Final: Billings 4, Helena 3

Walkoff hit for Billings tops Brewers 4-3

By Dustin Daniel / Helena Brewers

Late-game heroics were not enough for the Helena Brewers (6-7) as the Billings Mustangs (6-7) found a way to come out on top with a 4-3 win.

It was a pitcher's duel on Sunday afternoon as both starters went six innings allowing one run each. Helena's Jorge Ortega struck four without a walk in his outing while Luke Moran struck out five and walked two for Billings.

The Mustangs pulled ahead first when Garrett Boulware led off the second with a double. He advanced on a bunt from Argenis Aldazoro and later scored on a sacrifice from Alex Greer. Greer had two RBI on the day, a run scored and a double of his own.

Tucker Neuhaus tied the game up at 1-1 with his first professional homerun, a solo blast off Moran. Neuhaus went 1-for-2 with two runs scored.

The hosting Mustangs regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh as Brandon Moore allowed two runs in his first inning of relief. Greer and Nick Benedetto picked up back-to-back RBI hits to make it a 3-1 advantage for the Mustangs.

Down to their last three outs, the Brewers pulled a rabbit out of the hat in the top of the ninth and overcame their 3-1 deficit. Tucker Neuhaus scored on a wild pitch and Jack Cleary picked up an RBI single to score Elvis Rubio to even things up at 3-3.

Luke Curtis (0-1) came in in relief in the bottom of nine, but would not last long. A leadoff walk for Boulware and an advance to second on a bunt put a runner in scoring position with no outs. Kevin Franklin then picked up his second hit of the day for a walkoff single to end it.

Helena now drops to a tie for third in the Pioneer League North Division with the loss.

The Brewers and Mustangs will face off in their series finale Monday at Dehler Park. First pitch from Billings is set for 7:05 p.m.

Helena Box Score

Helena had 5 hits by 5 different players. The only player with an extra base hit was Tucker Neuhaus with a 6th inning homerun. Neuhaus also drew 2 walks in the game. Dustin DeMuth had a rare 0-for-4 game. It was a tough day for the left-side of the infield defensively, as they combined for 3 errors including a fielding and throwing error on the same play by SS Luis Aviles to open the 7th inning that proved costly. As noted in the game story, Jorge Ortega had a nice outing going 6.0 innings and allowing 1 run on 4 hits while walking none and striking out 4.

NASHVILLE - The Nashville Sounds (42-40) continued their offensive hot streak to their third-straight victory, a 6-4 win over the New Orleans Zephyrs (43-40) on Sunday night at Greer Stadium. The win clinched another home series victory for Nashville, which is now 6-1-3 in home series during the 2014 series.

The Sounds were paced by outfielder Jeremy Hermida, who went 3-for-4 including a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth that proved to be the game-winning hit. Hermida finished the four-game series against New Orleans going 5-for-11 with a home run and 3 RBIs.

Hunter Morris got the back-and-forth affair started in the bottom of the first by blasting a two-run homer to right field. The Sounds are now 23-1 at home when scoring first this season, and Morris is now hitting .344 (11-for-32) in his last eight games.

New Orleans answered with a run in the top of the second on a Kyle Jensen double, and then tied the game in the top of the third when pitcher Brad Hand hit a home run.

Nashville briefly took the lead again on a Sean Halton single in the bottom of the fourth, but the advantage wouldn't last long as Zephyrs reliever Jesus Sanchez knocked in two runs on an infield single in the top of the fourth. Nashville later tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a Hector Gomez triple.

The Nashville bullpen again shined behind starter Michael Blazek, as Kyle Heckathorn, Brent Leach, Dustin Molleken and Jeremy Jeffress combined to allow just one earned run in 5.1 innings of work. Leach picked up the win after pitching 1.1 clean innings while striking out three. Jeffress earned his first save of the season after retiring the Zephyrs in the ninth.

The Sounds moved into second place after the victory are now just a half game back of the Zephyrs for first place in the division.

The Sounds will now open a four-game series with the Memphis Redbirds at Greer on Monday at 7:05 p.m. RHP Mike Fiers (6-3, 2.53 ERA) will make his return in a Nashville uniform against Zach Petrick (4-3, 4.48 ERA). Jeff Hem will have the call on 102.5 The Game.

Back-to-back Bees blasts beat Rattlers

Burlington tops Rattlers 5-3

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Burlington Bees batters Eric Aguilera and Brandon Bayardi bopped consecutive home runs in the top of the fifth inning to break a 2-2 Sunday at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The Bees held on to beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 5-3.

Both teams had chances in the first two innings, but neither could score. Each team got a leadoff double in the first inning. Bayardi drew a leadoff walk in the Burlington second, but was left stranded at second base. The Timber Rattlers (42-37 overall, 6-4 second half) loaded the bases with no outs in the second, but could not score.

Burlington (43-36, 5-5) broke the ice first with two runs in the top of the third inning. Erick Salcedo singled and Kody Eaves walked to start the inning. Angel Rosa doubled to left-center and Salcedo scored while Eaves moved to third base. Mike Fish knocked in Eaves with a grounder to short and the Bees were up 2-0.

The Rattlers answered in the bottom of the third. Chris McFarland and Omar Garcia both singled to start the inning. Ratterree doubled to drive in McFarland and send Garcia to third base. Clint Coulter drew a walk to load the bases. Taylor Brennan grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to score Garcia and tie the game 2-2.

Aguilera hit the first pitch of the fifth inning deep to right-center for his tenth home run of the season. Then, Bayardi hit a 1-0 pitch out to left-center for back-to-back homers and a 4-2 lead.

Wisconsin pulled to within a run in the bottom of the eighth. Michael Ratterree hit a solo homer with one out. The homer was the thirteenth of the season and ties him with Clint Coulter for the team lead in that category. Ratterree finished the day 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a walk in four trips to the plate.

The Bees tacked on an insurance run in the top of the ninth on an RBI double by Bayardi.

Brewers prospect Ratterree showing power with Rattlers

Ratterree hits 13th home run, has three hits in Rattlers loss

Tim Froberg, Post-Crescent Media

Two years into his pro baseball career, Michael Ratterree is establishing himself as a legitimate prospect whose best tool is coveted in the big leagues.

The kid can hit the ball out of the park.

Ratterree was a bright spot Sunday afternoon for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in a 5-3 loss to the visiting Burlington Bees. The 23-year-old right fielder went 3-for-3 with a long home run and knocked in two runs.

It was the 13th home run of the season for Ratterree, tying him with teammate Clint Coulter and Lake County's Eric Haase for second in the Midwest League in homers. Ratterree leads Wisconsin in runs scored (54) and doubles (21) and is second on the Rattlers in RBI (44). His batting average (.253) is nothing special, but his slugging percentage is over .500.

"Even though his average isn't tremendous, he's been a pretty good production guy for us," said Wisconsin manager Matt Erickson. "He's been pretty decent in all facets of the game."

A 10th-round draft pick out of Rice University in the 2013 first-year player draft, Ratterree showed instant power in his first season at Helena, socking 12 homers and collecting 58 RBI while hitting .314 in 258 at-bats. He impressed the Milwaukee organization in spring training and turned some heads with a home run at Miller Park while playing for the Brewers in the team's exhibition finale against the Kansas City Royals.

"He's had to work on the tempo and rhythm of his swing," Erickson said. "There's been a major adjustment there. He'll get into it for a while and then get out of it. But no matter what his rhythm is, his swing creates a lot of backspin. And if you can create backspin, you can generate power and find the gaps."

There was no doubt about Ratterree's solo homer Sunday. He jumped on a fastball by Bees right-hander Brian Loconsole and hammered it well over the wall in left-center. Both Ratterree and Coulter have a shot at the Rattlers' single-season home run record of 22, shared by current Milwaukee Brewers left fielder Khris Davis and Victor Roache.

"I'm just trying to be aggressive up there," said Ratterree, a right-handed hitter. "I'm looking for fastballs and trying to stay toward the middle of the field. I'm a pull hitter, though, so it usually ends up going to left."

Even with his impressive power numbers, Ratterree sees plenty of room for improvement.

"I feel like I can play a lot better," said Ratterree, a Houston native. "I've been working with (hitting coach) Chuckie Caufield and have come to the field prepared and ready to work. I got some good results today."

Ratterree has also played well defensively in right field, showing good range and a strong arm.

"Defensively, I just try and stay ready for every pitch," said Ratterree. "It's always nice to be able to help out your pitchers when you get a chance."

Second baseman Chris McFarland, activated Saturday following a long stay on the disabled list with a sprained ankle, added two hits for Wisconsin. The Rattlers, though, were outhit 10-7 and hit into three double plays. Wisconsin dropped to 42-37 overall and 6-4 in the second half.

Burlington starter Harrison Cooney went 5 2/3 innings to pick up the win before a Neuroscience Group Field crowd of 3,185, outpitching Wisconsin starter Preston Gainey.

"We had the potential for some big innings the first three innings, but couldn't get it done," said Erickson. "We had a chance to get to Cooney early, but couldn't get the big hit. Cooney is a pretty decent pitcher. He sinks the ball a little bit and changes speeds well."

Gainey allowed four runs on seven hits in five innings, surrendering back-to-back homers by Eric Aguilera and Brandon Bayardi in the top of the fifth which broke open a 2-2 game. Tyler Spurlin followed with three innings of effective relief for the Rattlers, lowering his ERA to 2.49.

"Gainey was a little sporadic," said Erickson. "He managed to stay out of the real big inning, but those back-to-back homers hurt. They put two pretty good swings on him."

Paciorek Pinch Hits Stars To Victory

The Stars and Braves exchanged leads several times and both blew leads.

The Braves took a 3-0 lead in the second inning against Huntsville starter Jacob Barnes.

With runners at second and third base with two outs, Daniel Castro blooped a single to right field. Braeden Schlehuber followed with an RBI when he reached on a fielder's choice. Mississippi starting pitcher Jason Hursh then came through on a soft single to right making it 3-0.

The Stars tied the game in the top of the third inning.
