Top 10 Fantasy Prospects: Jimmy Nelson Is Ready And Waiting

June 26, 2014 by J.J. Cooper

1. Jimmy Nelson, rhp, Brewers

Season Totals: 8-2, 1.79, 90 IP, 59 H, 23 R, 18 ER, 27 BB, 96 SO at Triple-A Nashville.

Update: Nelson gave up two home runs in a start at Salt Lake after giving up only one home run in his first 13 Triple-A games but otherwise was his usual, effective self. He walked one, he struck out five and he picked up the win.

Prognosis: At this point, talk to a scout with Pacific Coast League coverage and one of the first questions you get is “why is Nelson still here?” Good question, no great answer. But Nelson should be up in Milwaukee at some point soon, and with his newfound ability to work to both sides of the plate and to neutralize a previously pretty significant platoon advantage for hitters, he’s ready to be a useful add in both mixed and NL roto-leagues.

Rattlers shutout in final game of road trip

Kane County stops Wisconsin 5-0

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GENEVA, IL - Daury Torrez tossed eight innings and got enough offensive support from the Kane County Cougars to defeat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 5-0 on Thursday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. Torrrez, who is 3-0 in three starts against the Timber Rattlers this season, allowed five hits, struck out seven, and earned his eighth win of the year.

Wisconsin (41-35 overall, 5-2 second half) started the game with something that looked promising against Torrez. Angel Ortega tripled with one out. But, Torrez struck out the next two batters to end the threat. The first inning was the only time during the game the Timber Rattlers got a runner to third base.

Kane County (50-27, 5-2) scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Jake Hannemann singled and took second on an error to lead off the inning. Rattlers starting pitcher Tristan Archer struck out Carlos Penalver for the first out. The ball was returned to Archer and Hannemann took off for third while the next batter was being announced for an extremely delayed steal of third base. Kyle Schwarber grounded out to short on a 3-0 pitch to get Hannemann home with the first run of the game.

The Cougars added to their lead in the bottom of the third inning. Archer retired the first two batters he faced in the inning. But, Schwarber and Ben Carhart singled to get the inning to Jacob Rogers. The Timber Rattlers defense was set up with Ortega, the Wisconsin shortstop, set up behind second base. Rogers defeated the shift by sending a grounder to the normal shortstop position on a 2-1 pitch for a single to score Schwarber for a 2-0 advantage.

Zach Quintana relieved Archer to start the bottom of the sixth inning. He walked Carhart and allowed a single to Rogers, the first two batters he faced. Trey Martin doubled with one out to knock in both runners and Kane County's lead doubled to four runs.

Schwarber started the bottom of the eighth inning with a double and scored on a double by Carhart to account for the final run of the game.

That was more than enough for Torrez. In three starts against Wisconsin, Torrez has allowed five runs in 20-1/3 innings. On Thursday night, Torrez never reached a three-ball count on any batter and only topped fifteen pitches in an inning once.

This marked just the second time Wisconsin has been shutout this season. The Cougars handed the Rattlers their other shutout defeat when they topped Wisconsin 1-0 in nine innings for a win in the second game of a doubleheader on May 20 at home.

Wisconsin finished their extended ten-game road trip with a 7-3 record. Wisconsin was 2-1 at Quad Cities to end the first half of the Midwest League season June 13-15; swept a four-game series at Burlington from June 20-22; and dropped two of three at Kane County in a series that began on Tuesday.

The Cougars still have not lost a home series and are now 33-9 at home in 2014.

The Timber Rattlers begin a seven-game homestand on Friday night when they host the Burlington Bees in game one of a four-game series. Clint Terry (1-1, 3.48) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Burlington has named Garrett Nuss (3-0, 3.84) as their starting pitcher. Game time is 7:05pm.

There will be plenty going on at the stadium to welcome the team back to town for their first home game since June 12.

It's the sixth annual Peanut Free Night. No peanuts will be in the stadium to allow fans with peanut allergies to attend the game.

Neuroscience Group presents the MEGA Brain and Strike Out Stroke Night. The MEGA Brain is a one of a kind display and Neuroscience Group will have it in front of the stadium plus they will provide free blood pressure screenings inside the ballpark.

The first 500 fans to attend this game will receive a magnet featuring former Timber Rattler Jim Henderson from Lamers Bus Lines. This is magnet number two in a series of four that are being given away this season.

It's also a North Shore Bank Family Night w/ Y100. All children 12 and under receive a free hot dog and soda as part of North Shore Bank Family night. There will be a postgame fireworks display. Then, kids 14 and under may participate in Kids Run the Bases thanks to Molina Healthcare after the fireworks. Plus, Potawatomi Bingo Casino presents Baseball Bingo, a chance to win prizes by playing a baseball-themed bingo game.

If you can't make it out to the ballpark, there are several ways to catch the action. MyNEW32's Sports Showdown will have the television broadcast beginning at 7:00pm. The radio call may be heard on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:45pm. The game is also available to subscribers of MiLB.TV.

WP: Daury Torrez (8-3)

LP: Tristan Archer (2-3)

TIME: 2:15

ATTN: 7,653

Wisconsin Boxscore

Well this was an ugly listen... Daury Torrez only had 38 SO in 72.1 IP coming into tonight's game but he now has 16 SO in 20.1 IP against the T-Rats. I have a feeling the Rattlers are going to be the wrong side of a feature story tonight, Torrez isn't currently at top 30 prospect for the Cubs.

The bottom of the order accounted for 4 of Wisconsin's 5 hits and Jose Pena (2-3) had the only multi-hit game.

I'm pretty excited about Jorge Lopez' development this season. For as much attention as a lot of other prospects get, Lopez' may be more indicative that the team's patience and overall scouting/player development system is putting this organization back on the right track. That may sound like a big leap, but Lopez was a very promising pitcher coming out of HS in Puerto Rico when the team took him, so if he's development in a positive fashion it points to a system that has the pieces in place to allow raw, young players to be successful.

And he's just one of several feel-good stories this year for the farm system. There may be a night and day different when it comes to the organizational rankings next year.

Oh yeah, Lopez out-dueling another Futures Game pitcher this evening, and check out that groundball/flyball rate.

Sounds Thumped by Zephyrs, 11-1

Nashville Scatters Seven Hits; Pete Orr Goes 2-for-4

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE - The Nashville Sounds (40-41) dropped a tough 11-1 decision to the American Conference Southern Division leading New Orleans Zephyrs (43-37) at Greer Stadium on Thursday night. The 10-run deficit is the most allowed by the Sounds this season.

Nashville starter Ariel Pena struggled with his command in a brief three inning start where he allowed seven earned runs on six hits while walking four and throwing five wild pitches. The Zephyrs hit Pena early and often, jumping out to a 3-0 lead after the top of the first.

New Orleans increased the deficit to 9-0 before the Sounds got on the scoreboard with a Jeff Bianchi RBI double in the bottom of the fifth, scoring Logan Schafer. Schafer was an on-base machine for Nashville, drawing a season-high three walks.

The only Sounds batter to record multiple hits was Pete Orr, who went 2-for-4. Orr is now hitting .382 in his last 17 games while picking up at least one hit in 15 of those contests.

Caleb Gindl's double in the bottom of the fourth gives him extra-base knocks in his last four games, which matches a Sounds season high previously set by Hector Gomez from April 24 to April 27.

The Sounds were able to save the bullpen thanks to Eric Marzec pitching four innings, his longest outing of the season. He allowed one earned run while tying a season-high with four strikeouts. Brent Leach followed by allowing one run in two innings of work. In the last two games, the Sounds bullpen has allowed just three runs in 13.1 innings pitched.

With the win, New Orleans increased their lead over the Sounds in the Southern Division to 3.5 games.

Nashville will look to get back in the division race against the Zephyrs Friday at 7:05 p.m. Brewers No. 1 prospect Jimmy Nelson (8-2, 1.79 ERA) will take to the hill for Nashville against Zephyrs LHP Brian Flynn (7-5, 3.56 ERA). Jeff Hem will have the call on 102.5 The GAME.

Nashville Boxscore

Is there a bigger tease in the entire Brewers' system than Ariel Pena? Tonight was the alter ego to those occasional flashes of brilliance.

Old friend Jesus Sanchez is having a tough year but had a good night tonight against the Sounds.

Final: @Huntsville 4, Montgomery 1

GAGNON AND MAY LEAD STARS TO WIN

Steve Jarnicki, Huntsville Stars

Huntsville, AL - The Huntsville Stars got an outstanding start from RHP Drew Gagnon (5-2) and just enough offense from catcher Lucas May, leading them past the Montgomery Biscuits 4-1 Thursday night at Joe Davis Stadium.

May gave the Stars the lead in the bottom of the second inning. He hit a two-out solo home run over the wall in left field for his first home run of the year.

The Biscuits tied the game against Gagnon in the top of the fourth inning. Jake Hager led off by tripling down the right field line. The next batter, Taylor Motter, brought Hager home on RBI single into centerfield tying the game at 1-1.

The Stars took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth.

Jason Rogers worked a one out walk against Montgomery starter Victor Mateo (8-5). Hainley Statia then grounded out to second base.

With two outs and Rogers at second base, D’Vontrey Richardson hit a grounder to second baseman Ryan Brett. Brett tried to scoop the ball and he couldn’t handle it allowing Richardson to reach.

With May at the plate, Mateo attempted to pick off Richardson at first base. First baseman Jeff Malm chased Richardson towards second base, but instead threw home trying to get Rogers. His throw sailed over catcher Luke Maile’s head, scoring Rogers and allowing Richardson to reach third base.

May then singled into left field scoring Richardson.

The Stars got an insurance run in the seventh on a Kentrail Davis sacrifice fly making it 4-1.

Gagnon worked seven innings allowing four hits. He allowed just one run and struck out four.

Jose De La Torre worked scoreless eighth and ninth innings to record his first save of the season. De La Torre struck out three out of the Stars bullpen.

May finished 2-2 with two RBI in the Stars win.

Montgomery (5-3, 40-38) leads the series 2-1. Game four of the series will be Friday night. The Stars (4-4, 50-28) will have LHP Brent Suter (7-5, 3.45) on the mound. Final: Lakeland 2, Brevard County 4

Lopez outduels Thompson as 'Tees top Lakeland, 4-2

By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees

Manatees starting pitcher Jorge Lopez allowed two runs in eight innings and earned his eight win of the season in Brevard County's 4-2 victory over the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium in Viera. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

VIERA, Fla. - In a battle of 2014 All-Star Futures Game selectons, Jorge Lopez and the Brevard County Manatees defeated Jake Thompson and the Lakeland Flying Tigers, 4-2 on Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium in a rain-shortened, eight-inning contest.

Lopez's first seven innings were nearly flawless. He two-hit the Flying Tigers through seven frames, did not walk a batter and did not allow a single run.

Lakeland's only runs against Lopez came right before the rain fell in the eighth inning. Lopez took a 4-0 'Tees lead into the eighth, but Austin Green led off the frame with a single. Right after that, James Robbins drove an opposite-field home run over the left field wall to cut Brevard County's lead in half.

The rain would drown out any further chance that Lakeland had at coming back, as the game was unable to be completed due to heavy precipitation and lightning.

Brevard County (5-3 second half, 41-33 overall) built its lead behind Orlando Arcia's hot bat. The shortstop - who had five hits and five RBI two nights ago - opened the scoring with the bases loaded and one out in the third. Arcia hit a hard grounder up the middle that bounced off the mound and drifted to second baseman Curt Powell behind the bag. Powell could not make a play and Alfredo Rodriguez scored to give the Manatees a 1-0 lead on the infield single.

Two innings later, Arcia came up again with a chance to plate some runs. Rodriguez and Nathan Orf had knocked back-to-back two-out singles to start a rally. Arcia then delivered a line drive over the head of Robbins at first. Rodriguez trotted home, as Arcia cruised into second with an RBI double to make it a 2-0 game.

Orf went 3-for-4 on the night to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. During that stretch, he has recorded eight multi-hit games and is hitting .488 (21-for-43).

The Manatees tacked on two more runs in the sixth that proved to be the difference. Michael Reed began the inning with a clever bunt single down the third baseline. Nicky Delmonico then dunked a single into center to put runners on first and second.

With Victor Roache at the plate, both Reed and Delmonico took off on a double steal. Lakeland catcher Austin Green tried to throw out Delmonico at second, but his throw soared into center. Reed scored easily to push the Manatees' lead to 3-0.

After Roache flied out for the first out of the inning, Lakeland (3-5, 45-30) made a call to the bullpen and brought in right-hander Nate Fury to replace Thompson. Fury induced a groundout for the second out, but the reliever could not retire Parker Berberet. Brevard's catcher punched a single to right field that scored Delmonico and the 'Tees took a 4-0 lead.

Thompson (6-3, 2.75 ERA) ended up as the losing pitcher in the rain-shortened ballgame. He was charged with all four runs over his 5.1 innings of work. The Manatees tallied nine hits against Thompson and struck out twice.

Lopez (8-3, 2.93) earned his eighth victory to pull him even with Hobbs Johnson for the team-lead. The righty pitched eight innings and allowed two runs on five hits. Lopez did not issue a walk and struck out three Flying Tigers, as the 'Tees took the rubber match of the three-game series.

Johnson (8-5, 2.97) will get the ball for Brevard County on Friday at 6:30 p.m., as the 'Tees hit the road for a three-game series against the Clearwater Threshers (4-4, 21-55). Clearwater is expected to send righty Jeb Stefan (4-6, 4.63) to the hill.

Final: Great Falls 7, Helena 3

Great Falls sweeps series, win Thursday 7-3

By Dustin Daniel / Helena Brewers

The Great Falls Voyagers (8-3) swept their two-game series with the Helena Brewers (4-6) at Kindrick Field with a 7-3 victory on Thursday.

The Voyagers scored in every inning from the second until the fifth, posting all seven of their runs in those frames.

Brewers starter Josh Uhen (0-1) gave up four runs in his three innings of work, striking out three batters and allowing six hits.

A four-hit second inning saw Great Falls take control and they never looked back. John Ziznewski and Jackson Laumann doubled in the inning and two runs would score on a single from Mason Robbins. Robbins was 3-for-5 in the game with three RBI and a double.

Voyagers' starter Zach Thompson made his professional debut Thursday night. He would pitch just two innings, but did not give up a hit and struck out three batters. Thompson was teammates with Helena catcher Greg McCall in college at UT-Arlington.

Dionis Hinijosa would score in the sixth on an RBI single from Eric Williams to bring the lead for Great Falls to four. That is where the Helena scoring would end as Aaron Bummer and Jon Bengard closed out the ballgame with shutout pitching.

The Brewers will now travel to Billings to take on the Mustangs in a four-game series. First pitch from Billings on Friday night is set for 7:05 p.m.
