May be reading too much in to a tweet, but Tyler Wagner is listed as the scheduled starter for Brevard tomorrow night. Could a promotion be coming? Regardless, a 3 Ninjas tweet is too good to not be shared.

Good detective work, but the actual details from the Voice of the Manatees Dave Walkovic (tweet) --

Chad Pierce gets the start tonight for the 'Tees instead of Tyler Wagner. Nothing wrong with Wags...he is just having his start skipped.

It's too bad Clint didn't catch his entire baseball career, being a SS until his Junior year in high school has actually set him back some, but suggests he might be able to handle the hot corner.

The Baseballist: 10 Hitting Prospects Who Might Be Better Than You Think

June 25, 2014 by Matt Eddy

8. Clint Coulter, c, Brewers

SO/BB: 1.07. SO: 17.2%. BB: 16.0%.

First Half: .282/.427/.534 in 262 PA at low Class A Wisconsin.

Yes, Coulter spent the first half repeating the Midwest League, but he’s healthy this year and armed with new plate awareness ($) he learned from a tough 2013. Given his reduced strikeout rate, doubled-up walk rate and excellent power output compared with last season, the 2012 first-round pick could be zooming up prospect lists. If his offensive gains are real, however, the Brewers might not want to wait for his defensive tools to catch up, but if he sticks at catcher, he’s a serious sleeper

Rattlers scratch out a 3-2 win at Kane County

Wisconsin hangs on in the ninth

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GENEVA, IL - Pitchers Anthony Banda and Victor Diaz held the Kane County Cougars to two runs and Johnny Davis made a spectacular catch in the bottom of the ninth inning to preserve a Wisconsin Timber Rattlers victory on Wednesday afternoon. Wisconsin held on to defeat the Cougars 3-2 at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

The Cougars (49-26 overall, 4-2 second half) went in front in the bottom of the third inning. Kyle Schwarber, the player taken by the Chicago Cubs with the #4 pick in the 2014 draft, hit a 3-0 pitch from Banda over the wall in right for his second homer since joining Kane County on June 19. Schwarber has six homers in eleven games as a professional.

The Rattlers (41-34, 5-1) responded in the top of the fourth. Clint Coulter was hit by a pitch from Cougars starter Tyler Skulina with one out. Garrett Cooper doubled off the wall in right with two outs and Coulter raced home with the tying run.

Jake Hannemann created a run for the Cougars in the bottom of the fifth inning to put them back in front. Hannemann drew a four-pitch walk from Banda, stole second on the next pitch, and went to third on a wild pitch on the next pitch. Hannemann broke for the plate on the next pitch as Carlos Penalver squared to bunt on a suicide squeeze attempt. The pitch was low and in and got away from catcher Paul Eshleman. Hannemann scored and was credited with a steal of home.

Skulina turned the game over to the bullpen for the top of the sixth and the Rattlers rallied almost immediately. Coulter and Jose Pena walked with one out against Zak Hermans. Cooper was next and he was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Both managers made switches after that pitch loaded the bases. Kane County's Mark Johnson went back to the bullpen for Corbin Hoffner to face Steve Halcomb. Wisconsin's Matt Erickson put Francisco Castillo in as a pinch-runner for Jose Pena at second base.

Hoffner got Halcomb to send a one-hop grounder to Ben Carhart at first base. Carhart stepped on the bag at first for the out on Halcomb, but he needed to throw to second for a tag play on Cooper to complete the inning-ending double play. The throw was wild and wound up in left field. Coulter and Castillo both scored on the play and the Rattlers were up 3-2.

Diaz took over for Banda in the bottom of the sixth and proceeded to pitch four eventful - but scoreless and hitless innings.

Diaz tosses a 1-2-3 bottom of the sixth inning, but had a long wait before he went back to the mound of the bottom of the seventh as there was a 27-minute rain delay during the top of the seventh.

When play resumed, Diaz walked David Bote to lead off the bottom of the seventh Trey Martin was asked to bunt Bote to second base. Martin missed the ball, Bote strayed too far from first, and Eshleman threw a strike to first to pick Bote off for the out.

Schwarber came to the plate in the bottom of the eighth with one out and none on base. He launched a deep fly to center on a 1-2 pitch from Diaz, but the ball died just shy of the warning track and Davis made an easy catch.

In the bottom of the ninth, Diaz got the first out, but walked Jeimer Candelario to put the tying run on base. Kane County called on lefty Jacob Rogers to pinch hit for Cael Brockmeyer and face the right-handed Diaz. Rogers leads Kane County in doubles with nineteen and has also hit seven home runs this season.

Rogers hit a 2-2 pitch from Diaz high and deep to right-center. Davis had been shading Rogers to left-center, but raced back to the warning track and made a great catch. Candelario, thinking that no one could catch that ball, was racing around the bases and was about ten feet from third when Davis made the catch. Davis fired the ball into second and it rolled to third baseman Taylor Brennan on the infield grass just as Candelario was rounding second on his way back to first. Brennan lobbed the ball to Cooper covering at first to easily double off Candelario for the final out of the game.

Diaz has allowed one hit and no runs over his last two appearances which total ten innings. He also earned his first professional save with four innings on Wednesday.

The Timber Rattlers have won nine of their last ten games.

The final game of the series is Thursday night at 6:30pm. Tristan Archer (2-2, 3.98) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Kane County sends Daury Torrez (7-3, 3.48) to the mound. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:10pm.

Wisconsin Boxscore

Victor Diaz was fantastic in relief, he didn't allow a hit in his 4 innings, walked 2, but only struck out 1. If you look at his player link you'll see he's done things in "2s" all season and this was his second consecutive stellar effort. Hopefully he breaks the cycle here gets an extended hot streak going.

The Rattlers managed just 5 hits so Garrett Cooper (2-3,2B) had the only multi-hit game.

Omar Garcia was caught stealing for the 15th time in 44 attempts, his 66% success rate is surprising given how well he runs.

Final: Lakeland 4, Brevard County 1

Brevard's bats quieted in 4-1 loss to Flying Tigers

By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. - Behind seven stellar innings from starting pitcher Josh Turley, the Lakeland Flying Tigers downed the Brevard County Manatees, 4-1 at Space Coast Stadium on Wednesday night.

Turley (7-0, 1.86 ERA) remained undefeated with his seventh victory of the year, as he surrendered just one run on eight hits. The left-hander only struck out two, but he kept the 'Tees off the basepaths. Turley walked one batter all game and faced four or fewer batters in four different innings.

Brevard County (4-3 second half, 40-33 overall) scored its only run against Turley in the fourth inning, but the 'Tees were inches from scoring more. The Manatees were already down 4-0 at the start of the fourth, but Michael Reed roped a one-out double and Cameron Garfield followed with a single. Victor Roache then gave the Flying Tigers a scare.

The 'Tees left fielder got into a Turley offering and lifted it high and deep to left. Chad Wright ranged all the way back to the wall, reached up and made the catch with his hip on the fence. Reed tagged up and scored from third on the sacrifice fly, but Brevard County was dangerously close to pulling within one run. Instead, they settled for a 4-1 deficit.

Prior to that close call, Lakeland (3-4, 45-29) had feasted at the plate to take an early edge against 'Tees starter Chad Pierce. In the first, Wright reached on a leadoff error by second baseman Nathan Orf. Curt Powell then singled and Jeff McVaney plated the first run of the game with a double to score Wright.

After the double opened the scoring, Pierce walked Lance Durham to load the bases with nobody out. Luckily for Brevard County, Lakeland could not manage a hit in that big spot, but the Tigers produced back-to-back sacrifice flies by Connor Harrell and Austin Green to take a 3-0 lead.

The visiting side added insurance in the top of the third, as Pierce struggled with his control. The right-hander hit McVaney with a pitch to start the inning and then gave up a single to Durham that put runners on the corners. With nobody out and Harrell at the plate, Pierce uncorked a wild pitch that scored McVaney with the Flying Tigers' fourth run.

Thanks to Turley and the Lakeland bullpen, those four runs were all Lakeland needed to snap Brevard County's three-game winning streak. Calvin Drummond relieved Turley and pitched a scoreless eighth to set up the closer, Brennan Smith.

Smith promptly picked up his sixth save of the season without allowing a run in the ninth. The righty gave up a leadoff hit to Mike Garza, but then retired the final three 'Tees he faced.

Pierce (1-4, 4.05), who was making a spot start, took the loss for the Manatees. Of the four runs he surrendered, only two were earned. The right-hander struck out three, walked two, hit a pair of batters and surrendered four hits in three innings of work. This was the first time Pierce gave up a run as a starter this season and the first time he took home a decision as a starter.

Offensively, Orf was the biggest bright spot for the Manatees. He reached in four out of five plate appearances with two singles. The second baseman's 2-for-5 evening extended his career-high hitting streak to nine games. Orf is hitting .462 (18-for-39) during his current run.

Brevard County and Lakeland will close out their three-game set with the rubber game of the series on Thursday night. First pitch at Space Coast Stadium is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.

Thursday's game will feature a pair of hurlers who were just selected to play in the 2014 All-Star Futures Game on July 15 at Target Field in Minnesota. Jorge Lopez (7-3, 3.00) will get the call for Brevard County against Lakeland's Jake Thompson (6-2, 2.43).

Bradley with a decent outing. The 4 BB and HR weren't good but 9 K's in 7 innings are as well as a 8:2 GO:FO. Really nice to see him get his K rate up this year, and his GO:FO ratio which was good before this year has become great.

Brandon Diaz tied up the ballgame in the bottom of the third when he blasted a solo homerun to center off Brennan. It was Diaz's third of the year.

The two teams would go scoreless through the remainder of nine and send the game to extra innings for the first time in the Brewers' young season.

Chevy Clarke immediately put it to bed with his solo shot off of Junior Rincon (0-1).

The Brewers could not respond in the bottom of the 10th as Connor Walsh (1-0) came up with his second and third strikeout to end the game.

Clarke’s 10th inning HR wins pitchers’ duel

by Curt Synness, Helena Independent Record

In a good, old-fashioned pitchers’ duel at Kindrick Legion Field on Wednesday, Great Falls center fielder Chevy Clarke gave the visiting Great Falls Voyagers a 3-2 win over the Helena Brewers with a solo home run in top of 10th inning.

Great Falls improves to 7-3 on the young Pioneer League season, while Helena slips to 4-5.

The Voyagers used four pitchers to four-hit the Brewers, with relievers Grant Monroe, Matt Cooper and Connor Walsh combining to no-hit the hosts over the final 5 2/3 innings.

Starter Brandon Brennan went 4 1/3 frames, allowing four hits and two runs, one of which was unearned, with four strikeouts and one walk.

Closer Connor Walsh worked the last two stanzas for the win, fanning three.

Helena’s hurlers were almost as good, with middle reliever Luis Ortega twirling five innings of scoreless ball, giving up two hits and striking out three.

Brewer starter Cy Sneed worked three frames, allowing a pair of scores, neither of which were earned, with three strikeouts. Junior Rincon spelled Ortega in the ninth and wound up taking the loss, allowing three hits and fanning four. His fast ball was clocked at 93 mph.

Local manager Tony Diggs’ pitching staff did not issue a single walk on the evening.

Helena got on the board first in the bottom of the second when Mitch Meyer walked and went to second on an errant pick-off attempt by Great Falls pitcher Brandon Brennan. Meyer then scored on back-to-back wild pitched by Brennan.

The Voyagers went in front 2-0 in the top of the third on a Brewers' error, successive singles by Jackson Lawman and Jake Peter, and RBI ground-outs by Clarke and John Ziznewski.

In their half of the inning, the Brewers' Brandon Diaz knotted the score at 2 with a one-out, solo home run over the center field fence.

Next came six shutout innings by both teams' pitchers.

In the top of fourth, Helena first baseman Dustin DeMuth performed one of the contest’s best web gems, diving to his right and stabbing Zach Stoner’s hot smash before flipping the ball to pitcher Ortega for the inning’s third out.

With Great Falls runners on first and third and one down in the top of the fifth frame, the Brewers turned a 6-4-3 (Luis Aviles to Gregory Munoz to DeMuth) double play to get out of the inning.

The home team nearly broke the tie in the bottom of the eighth, as Diaz advanced to third with two outs. But then Greg McCall grounded out to second to end the inning.

Clarke, a 6-foot, 200-pound 22-year old from Atlanta finished the night 2 for 4 with the homer and two RBIs.

DeMuth stroked a pair of singles for the Brewers.

The two teams meet again today in the second tilt of the two-game series, with the first pitch slated for 7:05 PM (8:05 Central) at Kindrick Legion Field.

Final: @AZL Brewers 7, AZL Dodgers 6

The A-Crew moves to 4-1 with a walk-off win!

AZL Brewers Bottom of the 9th

Monte Harrison grounds out to first baseman Clint Freeman.

Sthervin Matos homers (2) on a fly ball to left field.

The 20-year-old Matos, a 4th-year pro, hit four HR's in 125 DSL at-bats in 2013.

Maryvale Box Score

Brewers led 6-2 before a four-run Dodgers' 7th tied things up.

20-year-old RHP Milton Gomez had a second consecutive five-inning start with no earned runs (one unearned run allowed five days prior, two on Wednesday). RHP Seth Harvey's Tommy John rehab continues well, and 21-year-old 24th round RHP Bubba Blau netted the win by retiring all seven batters he faced. Blau cleaned up the mess left behind by 20-year-old RHP Alex Lavandero, making his 2014 debut. Lavandero, a 9th round pick out of a Miami high school in 2012, is toiling in his 3rd consecutive Maryvale summer.

27th round Wake Forest catcher Matt Martin led the way offensively (double, single, HBP). Second baseman Daniel Leonardo also reached base three times (single, two walks). Carlos Belonis, playing LF, hit his first stateside home run, an inside-the-park job to right field. Matos doubled in addition to his game-winning bomb.

Contributions from many so view the box, although RF Monte Harrison was 0-for-5 with two K's. SS Jake Gatewood was thrown out for the second time in his three stolen base attempts, while leadoff CF Troy Stokes is now 3-for-3 on the basepaths.

Final: Montgomery 4, @Huntsville 2

Stars Drop 2nd Straight To Montgomery

Steve Jarnicki, Huntsville Stars

Huntsville, AL - The Montgomery Biscuits led wire to wire Wednesday night defeating the Huntsville Stars 4-2 at Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville.

The Biscuits scored early against Jed Bradley (1-3) who started for the Stars.

In the top of the first inning, Ryan Brett led off with a double down the left field line. Jake Hager then laced an RBI double to the gap in left center scoring Brett.

In the top of the second inning, Bradley retired the first two Biscuits before he walked Brett. That walk proved to be a costly one.

Hager launched a two-run homer over the left field fence giving the Biscuits a 3-0 lead.

Bradley, who suffered the loss, settled down and wound up pitching seven innings. He struck out a season high nine batters.

The Stars scored their lone runs of the game in the sixth and seventh inning. In the sixth, Kentrail Davis scored on a throwing error by catcher Luke Maile.

In the seventh, Nick Shaw produced an RBI single scoring D'Vontrey Richardson. Shaw's single cut the Montgomery lead to 3-2.

The Biscuits scored their final run in the ninth. With the bases loaded, Tanner Poppe hit Richie Shaffer forcing in Brett making it 4-2.

Matt Ramsey recorded his fifth save of the year for the Biscuits when he struck out Yadiel Rivera to end the game.

Michael Colla (4-8) earned the win for the Biscuits. He pitched a scoreless fifth.

Montgomery (5-2, 40-37) leads the series 2-0. Game three of the series will be Thursday night. The Stars (3-4, 49-28) will have RHP Drew Gagnon (4-2, 3.20) on the mound. Montgomery will turn to RHP Victor Mateo (8-4, 3.39). The game can be heard starting at 6:15 pm CDT on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM and wtkiradio.com.

Huntsville Box Score

Huntsville box scores without Shawn Zarraga and Mitch Haniger, not as fun...

Here's all the offensive players to see time for the Stars this season. The club is 49-28, wonderful, but the talent/prospect excitement simply can't equate.
