2014-06-24 Nationals (Zimmermann) at Brewers (Gallardo), 7:10 PM CDT [Brewers lose, 4-2, 16 innings]

That throw by Desmond was Brooks Robinson in the 1971 World Series-esque. Wow.

I assume you mean this from the 1970 WS. Brooks was still better, he was moving away from 1st and had to retire a player that was not walking down the line.

Another WI - Cubs link besides Merkle is Ryne Duran. More of a traitor to WI than Wendy Selig-Prieb, he was a big part of the Yanke 1958 3-1 WS deficit comeback against the Braves. He had a big triple digit fastball.

This was his WS line

[pre]Year Tm Lg Series Rslt Opp W L ERA G GF SV IP H R ER HR BB SO

1958 NYY AL WS W MLN 1 1 1.93 3 2 1 9.1 7 2 2 0 6 14[/pre]

He was the namesake for Ryne Sandberg, a Chicago hero, but purely by chance as his dad was watching the Yankees while trying to think of his unborn baby's name. They are the only 2 players in MLB history named Ryne. He was also a hard drinker and was very involved with AA after his career

If I don't see the Brewers hitting into another double play for a while, I'll be ok.

Also, are we going to run out of pitchers? Roenicke is burning through them at an alarming rate. Meanwhile, Detwiler continues to mow us down.

Nice Ryne Duren reference. I believe that he is also the pitcher who purposely would throw to the backstop during his warm up pitches to intimidate the other team.

What's the over/under on how many innings this game is going to go tonight?

Yup, that's it. Thank you for finding it. I had a brain fart, thinking the play was against the Pirates in the '71 World Series. It was in the '70 Series against the Reds. Such a great play.

And yes, I agree, Brooks' throw was better. Robinson gets the nod as my all-time best defensive third baseman.

Ha! I actually did that once or twice in high school, as the irony of it was that I was a control pitcher.

My pitching coach also wanted to teach me a knuckle ball so that I could throw it just once in the first inning. That way, it was another pitch the other team would have to think about. And of course, my catcher had a sign for "shake off the sign" as a fake-out.

Pants Rowland, from Platteville, WI was the skipper for the victorious 1917 Chicago White Sox. He was also the manager for the Sox in 1918, but he was not the manager in 1919 when the Black Sox Scandal hit.
