Sounds Stung By Bees, 5-1

Nashville's Bullpen Allows One Run in 8 2/3 Innings; Gindl Continues Hot Streak

Nashville Sounds

SALT LAKE CITY - The Nashville Sounds (40-40) could not overcome a poor start in a 5-1 loss to the Salt Lake City Bees (32-48) on Tuesday afternoon at Smith's Ballpark. The defeat dropped Nashville to an 8-16 mark in its last 24 road games.

The Bees tagged Sounds starter Johnnie Lowe (0-3) for four runs in the top of the 1st, providing all the offense they would need to pick up a win. Lowe lasted just 2/3 of an inning, taking the loss after allowing four earned runs on four hits and two walks.

Salt Lake took a 2-0 lead after just two batters when J.B. Shuck hit a home run following a lead-off single from Matt Long. The Bees added two more runs in the opening frame on an Ian Stewart sacrifice fly and a Roberto Lopez RBI single.

Kyle Heckathorn took over for Lowe and gained control before things got out of hand, providing 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. Heckathorn combined with relievers Alfredo Figaro, Donovan Hand, Arcenio Leon and Brent Leach to allow just one run in 8 2/3 innings of bullpen work.

Nashville's offense had batters reach safely in six of nine innings, but failed to put together a big rally needed to get back in the game.

Outfielder Caleb Gindl, however, continued his hot streak, going 3-for-4 including an RBI triple in the top of the 6th that cut the deficit to 4-1. In his last 12 games, Gindl has posted a .364 batting average (16-for-44) with six multi-hit games.

Sounds second baseman Pete Orr has hits in 14 of his last 16 games after hitting a double in the 2nd inning, posting a batting average of .373 (19-for-51) during that span.

The Bees answered in the bottom half of the 6th when Matt Long hit an RBI single off of Hand. Salt Lake City then put the game away by retiring the Sounds in order in two of the last three innings.

The Sounds return home and will begin an eight-game homestand on Thursday against the first-place New Orleans Zephyrs at 7:05 p.m. Sounds RHP Ariel Pena (4-5, 4.04 ERA) will face off against Zephyrs RHP Alex Sanabia (2-2, 5.23 ERA). Jeff Hem will have the call on 102.5 The Game.

Nashville Boxscore

I've been down on Kyle Heckathorn but he's been better over longer outings and hasn't given up any runs over his last 2 appearances (5.1 IP). Alfredo Figaro went 2 scoreless and Donovan Hand's struggles continue as he's now given up runs in 5 of his last 6 appearances. Arcenio Leon was oddly pulled after a single in the 8th so Brent Leach had to retire the final batter the Sounds faced.

The bats had a forgettable afternoon with Caleb Gindl (3-4,3B) putting half the hits on the board.

Final: Lakeland 4, Brevard County 10

Arcia's career night leads 'Tees over Lakeland, 10-4

Brevard shortstop goes 5-for-5, falls homer shy of cycle

By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. - Behind an incredible 5-for-5 night from Orlando Arcia, the Brevard County Manatees upended the Lakeland Flying Tigers, 10-4 at Space Coast Stadium on Tuesday night. His five hits were a new career-high and tied a career-high with five RBI, as the shortstop was just a home run shy of the cycle.

It was with his help that Brevard County (4-2 second half, 40-32 overall) jumped out to an early lead. In the bottom of the first, Nathan Orf led off with a triple that he demolished to left-center field. Arcia wasted no time driving him in, as he roped the first pitch he saw down the left field line for his first of two doubles of the night. The extra base-hit allowed Orf to score easily and gave the Manatees the lead, 1-0.

After James Robbins slammed a two-run home run to give Lakeland (2-4, 44-29) the 2-1 edge, the Brevard's bats struck right back. With one out in the third inning, Arcia picked up his second hit of the night with a single to left. Tyrone Taylor followed with a perfectly executed bunt single to put the pressure on Lakeland starter Kevin Eichhorn (4-2, 2.39 ERA).

With Michael Reed at the plate, the Manatees attempted a double steal. Both Arcia and Taylor slid in safely, but catcher Austin Green's throw sailed down the left field line. That allowed Arcia to scamper home and Taylor to advance to third and tie the game up at 2-2.

Reed then got in on the action by hitting a slow tapper back towards the mound that Eichhorn could not field cleanly. The Lakeland starter tried to flip the ball home to try and retire Taylor, who was racing home, but the throw and tag were late as the Manatees regained the lead for good, 3-2.

With the lead now in hand, Brevard busted the game open in the fourth and fifth. A single by Victor Roache and a double by Alfredo Rodriguez proceeded Arcia's next big hit. \

The Venezuela native slapped the ball into the right-center field gap, which allowed Roache and Rodriguez to scoot home easily and push the lead to 5-2. Arcia kept the motor on, as he slid into third with his third hit of the night and his team-leading fifth triple of the year.

The Manatees then put the game on ice in the following inning. With one out, Roache got plunked by Flying Tigers reliever Tyler Clark and Mike Garza followed with a single to put runners on the corners.

After Rodriguez brought home a run with a fielder's choice, Orf doubled to left to set the stage for Arcia once again. The 19-year-old did not disappoint, as he ripped another double - this time down the right field line - to bring home both runners and give the Manatees a six-run lead, 8-2.

Brevard extended their run total to ten in the seventh. With two outs, Orf was hit by his Florida league-high 13th pitch and Arcia picked up his fifth hit with a single to center. Taylor and Reed then followed suit by driving home both runners with back-to-back RBI singles.

Lakeland tallied their final two runs of the game on a run-scoring ground out by Lance Durham in the sixth and a RBI single by Connor Harrell in the eighth.

After going winless for just over a month, Damien Magnifico (4-4, 3.24) emerged victorious again tonight. In his longest start since May 24, the FSL All-Star went six innings and surrendered three runs - two earned - on four hits. His control was much improved, as he struck out four and issued just two walks.

Brevard County's offense continues to impress, tallying 11-plus hits for the fourth time in five games. As whole, the team recorded 16 base knocks with four players - Orf, Arcia, Taylor and Garza - put together multi-hit efforts. Brevard County showed speed too, as they stole five bases to set a single-game high for 2014.

The Manatees will battle the Flying Tigers again on Wednesday night, with first pitch slated for 6:35 p.m. Tyler Wagner (6-4, 1.96) gets the start, with the 'Tees looking to tie a season-high four-game winning streak. Lakeland will send southpaw and fellow All-Star Josh Turley (6-0, 1.91) to the mound to oppose him.

Brevard County Box Score

Orlando Arcia bumped his average up 14 points from .264 to .278 with his game tonight. Nathan Orf also had a nice game, reaching base three times. he doubled, tripled, and was hit by a pitch (box score currently says he walked, but game story says hbp and I was listening to the game and they said hbp on the broadcast as well). Michael Garza had three more hits and is hitting .362 in the month of June. The 'Tees ran wild on the bases, going 5-for-5 in steal attempts. Arcia, Michael Reed and Cameron Garfield each swiped a bag and Tyrone Taylor got two.

Damien Magnifico gave up just four hits in six innings of work to pick up his fourth win. Martin Viramontes breezed through the seventh inning but ran in to a little bit of trouble in the eighth before turning things over to Scott Lieser who mowed down all four hitters he faced to close out the game.

Manatees' Arcia shows off skills at plate

Brewers' No. 4 prospect goes 5-for-5, falls home run short of cycle

By Mark Emery / MiLB.com

If all you had seen of Orlando Arcia was his performance on Tuesday night, you would have no clue that the Brevard County shortstop is known more for his glove than his bat.

The Brewers' fourth-ranked prospect posted a 5-for-5 night in the Manatees' 10-4 win over Lakeland at Space Coast Stadium. He fell a homer shy of the cycle, ending up with two doubles, a triple, five RBIs and two runs scored. He threw in his 13th stolen base of the season.

"He was crushing the ball tonight," Brevard County batting coach Ned Yost IV said. "Every single at-bat, he hit the ball hard, which was great. He's been doing that as of late. He's really been working on just being on time and tonight, it all clicked for him. ... It was good to see. It was a lot of fun to watch."

Arcia set a career high for hits in a game while matching his previous best in RBIs. He also drove in five runs on June 7, 2011, in the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League. Four of his RBIs on Tuesday came with two outs.

"You really know it's going well when that happens," Yost said. "That really demoralizes the other team, when they get you on your heels like that and then it seemed like every time he came around, he was in a big situation and came through for us."

The 19-year-old Venezuelan became the second member of the Manatees to go 5-for-5 this season; as Tyrone Taylor achieved the feat while hitting for the cycle on April 29 in a 20-0 rout of Clearwater.

Against the Flying Tigers, Arcia doubled to left field in the first, singled to left in the third, tripled to right-center in the fourth, doubled to right in the fifth and singled to center in the seventh. Less than halfway through the game, he'd made the cycle a possibility.

"It definitely crossed my mind," Yost said. "In his last at-bat, the first pitch, he was on it. He crushed it but pulled it foul. I mean, it wasn't home-run distance, but if he lets it get maybe just a tick deeper, he keeps it fair and then he's got a chance. But he came through and ended up getting a two-strike single up the middle.

"It's so impressive for a kid that young to be in that situation and not try to hit a home run and get that single up the middle."

Through 71 games, Arcia owns a .278/.338/.381 slash line with 16 doubles, five triples and one homer. He's also collected 29 RBIs while swiping 13 bags in 18 tries.

Yost mentioned Arcia's natural ability when explaining his success, also noting that it doesn't hurt for him to have an older brother playing for the Twins in Oswaldo Arcia. Regardless, the hitting coach had nothing but praise for the player who turned in a perfect night at the plate.

"He's having an excellent year," Yost said. "We always felt like he's a good player. And he's been outstanding defensively. We knew that coming in, that he was going to be that way. And offensively, we weren't expecting a whole lot, but he's really opened our eyes this year and he's really come on strong. He's doing an excellent job.

"Honestly, I'd just like to see him keep doing what he's doing. For him being 19 in this league, like I said, he's opening up a lot of eyes. And if he can continue to do this, he's going to end up having an outstanding year."

Cougars snap Rattlers win streak

Wisconsin falls 9-3 to Kane County

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GENEVA, IL - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers four-game winning streak came to an end with a 9-3 loss to the Kane County Cougars at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Tuesday night. The Cougars erased a 3-2 Wisconsin lead with four runs in the bottom of the third inning and never looked back.

Wisconsin (40-34 overall, 4-1 second half) pulled a successful double steal to get on the scoreboard in the first inning. Johnny Davis walked and went to third on a single by Omar Garcia. Garcia stole second and the throw went through to the base. Davis took off for the plate with the ball on the way to second and scored without a play.

But, Kane County rallied (49-26, 4-1) for two runs in the bottom of the first. Jake Hannemann and Carlos Penalver singled to start the inning. Kyle Schwarber was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Yasiel Balaguert's grounder to second was enough to get a force play at second, but the throw to first was wild. Both Hannemann and Penalver scored to put the Cougars up 2-1.

Jose Pena struck out but reached first on a wild pitch to start the Wisconsin second. Garrett Cooper singled to center and Pena hustled around for third base. Angel Ortega knocked in Pena with a sacrifice fly to right to tie the game.

The Rattlers went back in front in the top of the third. Michael Ratterree and Clint Coulter both walked to start the inning. After a fielder's choice and a flyout to shallow left Ratterree was at third and Taylor Brennan was at first. Pena knocked in Ratterree with a sharp single to center for a 3-2 Wisconsin lead.

But, the Cougars came right back against Wisconsin starting pitcher Preston Gainey in the bottom of the third. Schwarber walked to start the inning. Balaguert doubled to right-center and Schwarber came around to score the tying run. Jacob Rogers singled on an 0-2 pitch to put runners on the corners with no outs. Will Remilard's grounder behind third resulted in Balaguert scoring as the only play Brennan had was to first base. Balaguert's run made it 4-3 in favor of the Cougars.

Jeimer Candelario kept the inning going with an RBI double to get Rogers home. A wild pitch by Gainey let Candelario score the fourth run of the inning and the Cougars were up 6-3.

Kane County starter Paul Blackburn tossed a 1-2-3 fourth and allowed a two out single to Brennan in the fifth before exiting with the 6-3 lead.

The Cougars added a run off reliever Tyler Alexander in the fifth on a two-out RBI single by Hannemann to score Remillard.

The Rattlers could not score in three innings against Kane County reliever Michael Wagner, who struck out four and allowed one hit.

Kane County pushed two more runs across the plate in the seventh inning against reliever Harvey Martin. Hannemann tripled with one out to get Trey Martin home from second. Penalver followed with an RBI single and the Cougars were up 9-3.

In the ninth, Garcia singled with one out against Michael Heesch. It was the third hit of the game for Garcia. But, Heesch struck out the other three batters he faced in the ninth to close out the game.

The loss was the first of the second half of the season for the Rattlers. The Timber Rattlers are 2-8 in ten games with the Cougars this season. Kane County is now 32-8 at home in 2014.

Game two of the series is Wednesday afternoon at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. Anthony Banda (3-5, 4.47) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Kane County will counter with Tyler Skulina (4-3, 2.70). Game time is 12:00pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM and IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 11:40am.

WP: Paul Blackburn (6-2)

LP: Preston Gainey (2-4)

TIME: 2:51

ATTN: 4,212

Wisconsin Boxscore

Boo to losing to Cubs yet again and also for the pitching in this one.

Since Chris covered everything else of note in the game story and this was a sour loss anyway I'll mention that Ortega committed his 18th error of the season and Coulter had 2 passed balls bumping his season total to 9. But hey, at least Ratterree scored an OF assist so the defense wasn't all bad.

To end on a happy note, Coulter's OBP is over .100 higher than his AVE but he's not alone, although Brennan is only hitting .241 his OBP is actually .375. When Denson was healthy and qualified he was the 3rd member of that club as he was hitting .245 at the time of the injury but posting a .376 OBP. Not too shabby for a trio of A ballers, 2 of which came to pro ball directly from the HS ranks...

Helena squeaks out 4-3 win to move into tie for 2nd in North

By Dustin Daniel / Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers (4-4) fought back to .500 and clinched their first series victory of the season with a 4-3 win over the Missoula Osprey (3-6) on Tuesday night.

Jorge Ortega (1-0) picked up his first win with another solid outing. Ortega would go five innings, giving up three runs on nine hits, striking out two and walking none.

It would be a pitcher's duel early on as both Ortega and Markus Solbach (0-2) would toss shutout baseball through four innings.

The Osprey would strike first, posting a run in the bottom of five when Dane McFarland scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Fernery Ozuna. Ozuna was 3-for-4 in the game with two doubles and an RBI.

Helena responded quickly by posting all four of their runs in the top of the sixth. The Osprey pitching staff would give up five consecutive hits to begin the inning as Solbach would be pulled after three batters. The Brewers came up with three doubles in the inning, as Tucker Neuhaus picked up his first RBI of the year by blasting a line drive into right to bring in Brandon Diaz. Neuhaus was 2-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored and an RBI.

Taking a 4-1 lead to the bottom of the sixth, the Brewers would let the Osprey back into the ballgame when Kevin Cron lined a two-run homer over the left field fence. It would be Cron's first professional base hit and brought the home team to within one run.

Luke Curtis closed out the game, pitching a clean ninth and picking up his first save.

The Brewers now return home for a two-game series with the Great Falls Voyagers. First pitch Wednesday night is set for 7:05 p.m.
