Sounds Edged 4-1 In Salt Lake City

Nashville's Gindl Homers; Cravy Makes Triple-A Debut

Nashville Sounds

SALT LAKE CITY - The Nashville Sounds (39-39) were on the losing end of a 4-1 tilt against the Salt Lake Bees on Sunday afternoon at Smith's Ballpark.

Tied 1-1 in the 5th inning, Salt Lake pulled ahead by plating a pair of runs off of Sounds reliever Arcenio Leon (0-2). J.B. Shuck hit a double off the outfield wall before moving to third and scoring on a pair of Leon wild pitches.

Right fielder Brennan Boesch followed with a single through the infield to score Tommy Field, who reached base on balls.

Sounds starting pitcher Tyler Cravy saw his Triple-A debut end earlier than anticipated, leaving the game after 3 1/3 innings pitched with an apparent injury.

The right-handed 24-year-old, who held an 8-1 record with a 1.72 ERA in Huntsville, limited Salt Lake batters to one run on two hits and three walks, while striking out four. Leon, who was charged with the loss, completed the 4th inning for Cravy.

Outfielder Caleb Gindl helped Nashville out to an early 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the 2nd inning; Nashville's only run of the ballgame.

Nashville batters collected six hits in the game, led by Eugenio Velez, who went two-for-four. Hunter Morris, Sean Halton, and Hector Gomez each recorded a hit.

Salt Lake's Zach Borenstein capped off the Bees scoring with a solo home run off of Brent Leach in the bottom of the 8th inning. Leach picked-off the baserunner at first before the home run to avoid allowing another run to score.

Caleb Clay (1-0) earned the win for Salt Lake, limiting Nashville to one run on three hits across 5 2/3 innings of work. Yoslan Herrera notched the save, his second.

The Sounds will continue their series with Salt Lake on Monday at 8:05 p.m. RHP Taylor Jungmann (2-4, 6.83) will take the hill for Nashville opposite Salt Lake's RHP Joel Pineiro (1-1, 9.00). Broadcaster Jeff Hem has the call on 102.5 The Game.

Nashville Boxscore

NOOOOO! Hopefully this Tyler Cravy injury isn't serious but at least the injuries are hitting the minor leagues instead of significant pieces of the big club this year. Eric Marzec put up a scoreless inning so his ERA remains spotless in limited AAA opportunities thus far.

Rattlers beat the rain and the Bees for fourth straight victory

Wisconsin tops Burlington 5-2 in rain-shortened game

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

BURLINGTON, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers defeated the Burlington Bees 5-2 Sunday at Community Field in game shortened to six innings by a severe thunderstorm. Taylor Brennan drove in a pair of runs and Taylor Williams worked six innings for a complete game victory for the Rattlers. Wisconsin has opened the second half of the season 4-0 after their four-game sweep of the Bees.

Wisconsin (40-33 overall, 4-0 second half) took advantage of a bout of wildness by Burlington starting pitcher Victor Alcantara in the first inning. Johnny Davis walked, Omar Garcia singled, and Michael Ratterree walked to load the bases with no outs. Clint Coulter's fly ball to right was deep enough to score Davis. Garcia would score on an errant throw on the play and the Rattlers were up 2-0. Ratterree would take third on a wild pitch and score on a ground out by Brennan for a 3-0 lead.

The Bees (38-35, 0-4) got on the scoreboard with an unearned run in the bottom of the second inning. Stephen McGee reached on an error and took second on a ground out. Ismael Dionicio singled to center with two outs to drive in McGee and cut Wisconsin's lead to two runs.

The Rattlers answered in the top of the third. Coulter started the inning with a double. Brennan followed with a single to drive in Coulter. The throw home was wild and Brennan wound up on third base. Rafael Neda drove in Brennan with a double to left and Wisconsin was up 5-1.

The storm clouds were rolling in during the sixth inning and Mike Fish hit a solo home run for the Bees with one out in the bottom of the frame. Williams got the second out, but a double by McGee, a passed ball, and a walk to Exicardo Cayones put runners on the corners and brought the tying run to the plate as rain started to fall.

Williams got Ranyelmy Mendoza to pop out to right to end the inning. Then, the umpires called for the tarp. The Burlington grounds crew got the cover on the infield just before a torrential downpour hit Community Field. The game was called thirty minutes later as the rain showed no signs of letting up and the outfield began to flood.

Williams earned his fifth win of the season. He allowed two runs - one earned - on six hits in a six-inning complete game. Williams walked one and struck out four.

Wisconsin has opened the second half of the 2014 Midwest League season by doing something no other Timber Rattlers team has ever done. In twenty seasons of Timber Rattlers baseball, no team had ever come into Burlington and swept a four-game series from the Bees…until this series.

The Timber Rattlers are off on Monday. They return to action on Tuesday at Kane County. Preston Gainey (2-3, 3.27) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Game time against the Cougars is 6:30pm. Catch the action on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:10pm. Wisconsin will have three games in Kane County before playing their next home game, a contest with the Bees on Friday, June 27 at 6:35pm.

HOME RUN:

BUR:

Mike Fish (7th, 0 on in 6th inning off Taylor Williams, 1 out)

WP: Taylor Williams (5-1)

LP: Victor Alcantara (4-4)

TIME: 1:59 (:30 delay)

ATTN: 994

Wisconsin Boxscore

Taylor Williams was pretty good, he only posted a single 1-2-3 inning (the 4th) but he scattered the 6 hits and 1 walk around his 6 innings enough that the solo HR in the 6th was the only damage charged to him.

Steven Halcomb (2-3) had the only multi-hit game in this rain shortened affair but for those old school types who still like to count RBIs Clint Coulter collected his 50th of the year with the sac fly in the 1st.

Final: Brevard County 6, Dunedin 5

Sixth inning rally pushes 'Tees past Dunedin, 6-5

By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/9/5/2/81158952/cuts/Orf_6.8_640x360_527urpew_r4bxxl0u.jpg

Manatees designated hitter Nathan Orf, seen here in a game from earlier this season, went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored in Brevard County's 6-5 win over the Dunedin Blue Jays on Sunday evening at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium in Dunedin. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

DUNEDIN, Fla. - Trailing 5-3, the Brevard County Manatees struck for three runs in the top of the sixth inning to knock off the Dunedin Blue Jays, by a final of 6-5 on Sunday evening at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium.

After a single by Mike Garza and a double by Yadiel Rivera, Nathan Orf came to the plate with one out and Brevard County (2-2 second half, 38-32 overall) trailing by a pair. On a 1-0 pitch from reliever Justin Jackson, Orf sliced a line drive down the right field line and into the corner. Garza and Rivera jogged home with ease, as Orf's double knotted the game up at five apiece.

After an infield single by Orlando Arcia, it looked like Dunedin (2-2, 48-25) would escape with the game tied. Tyrone Taylor hit a tailor-made double play ball to short, but it took a wild hop and ricocheted off Emilo Guerrero and rolled behind him. Everyone was safe and Dunedin called on left-hander Tony Davis to face Nicky Delmonico.

On a 3-2 pitch, Delmonico lofted a fly ball to shallow center. It did not seem deep enough to score the run, but Orf decided to test Dalton Pompey regardless. Pompey's throw was short and off line, as Orf scored the go-ahead run and put Brevard back in front, 6-5.

The Manatees wasted no time getting on the board, as they tallied two runs in the first inning against Blue Jays starter Ben White (3-4, 5.01 ERA) Orf started the ball game with a single to left and advanced into scoring position on a ground out by Arcia. Taylor then served a single into left to bring home Orf for his team-leading 39th RBI of the year and put the 'Tees on top, 1-0.

Three batters later - with the bases loaded - Garza hit a slow roller back up the middle. Guerrero ranged behind the second base bag, but had no play as Taylor raced home to extend the lead to two.

However after every Manatee run, Dunedin answered back. The Blue Jays tied the game up with runs in the first and second inning courtesy of a RBI groundout off the bat of Marcus Knecht and a single by Gustavo Pierre, respectively.

Brevard took the lead right back on a run-scoring double from Michael Reed, but it was short lived, as a two-run shot off the bat of Pierre in the fourth gave Dunedin its first lead of the game, 4-3.

The Blue Jays brought home another run in the fifth on an RBI single by Guerrero, but that would be all the offense they would muster for the remainder of the game. Dunedin managed to get five runners on base over the course of the game's final four innings, but none crossed the plate.

Kevin Shackelford, who took over for starter Hobbs Johnson (8-6, 2.97) at the start of the sixth inning, played a huge role in keeping those runners right where they were.

After a leadoff single in the sixth, he induced a double play to put an immediate end to threat. Again in the eighth inning, with runners on second and third and one out, Shackelford struck out Christian Lopes and then got Dwight Smith, Jr. - who went 3-for-4 on Saturday - to ground out to second base to end the rally. Shackelford finished his evening right there, with four hits allowed in a season-high three innings pitched.

The Manatees relied on Mark Williams to close out the win and that is exactly what he did. Much like Shackelford, after a one-out single, Williams forced L.B. Dantzler to ground into a game-ending 6-3 double play, as he picked up his fourth Florida State League save of the year.

Despite not having his best stuff, Johnson was able to battle through five innings and pick up his eighth win of the year, which puts him in a three-way tie for the FSL lead. Johnson allowed five runs on eight hits to tie a season-high.

Johnson was bailed out by a strong offensive output. The Manatees recorded 13 hits against Dunedin pitching; with three players - Orf, Reed and Garza - all recording multiple hits. Orf had the best night of them all, as he reached base four times with two runs scored, two doubles, two RBI and got hit by an FSL-leading 12th pitch.

Brevard County will turn to Austin Ross (6-1, 2.75) - who defeated the Blue Jays this past Wednesday - as they take close out their three-game set with Dunedin on Monday morning at 11:00 a.m. The Blue Jays will counter with All-Star Taylor Cole (5-3, 2.60) in the rubber match of the series.

6-2 win for Brewers pulls them back to .500

By Dustin Daniel / Helena Brewers

The Brewers won their second straight at Allegiance Field on Sunday, topping the Missoula Osprey 6-2.

The Brewers scored at least one run in the first five innings, putting all six runs of their runs up in the first five frames.

Chad Thompson (1-0) pitched solid baseball through five innings, giving up just one earned run on five hits, while striking out three.

Mitch Meyer put the game out of reach when he blasted a two-run homerun to right off of reliever Holdin Helmink. It was Meyer's second hit in professional baseball and first for extra bases. The Brewers designated hitter would go 1-for-3 in the game with a walk.

Javi Salas and Wesley Cox made their professional debuts on Sunday, both coming in from the Brewers bullpen. Salas lasted one and two thirds innings, giving up one hit and striking out one, while Cox finished off the game, pitching a solid ninth and striking out two.

The Brewers and Osprey will meet again on Monday for game three of their four-game series in Missoula. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.

Cravy looked to be favoring his side-torso/back area, kid's got heart to gut out the nerves of the debut though. Worked through a two walk first unscathed, then went on damage control, pun intended (injury+scoring threat), in the third:

Salt Lake Bottom of the 3rd

J. B. Shuck walks.

Tommy Field singles on a line drive to right fielder Jeremy Hermida. B. Shuck to 3rd.

Luis Jimenez singles on a ground ball to third baseman Pete Orr. B. Shuck scores. Tommy Field to 2nd.

Brennan Boesch grounds into a double play, first baseman Hunter Morris to shortstop Hector Gomez to pitcher Tyler Cravy. Tommy Field to 3rd. Luis Jimenez out at 2nd.

Roberto Lopez flies out to left fielder Caleb Gindl.

Hopefully this is minor for him.

Final: @Pensacola 4, Huntsville 3, 11 innings

Stars Fall In Extra Innings

Steve Jarnicki, Huntsville Stars

Pensacola, FL - The Pensacola Blue Wahoos stormed back from a two run deficit in the ninth inning and posted a 4-3 win over the Huntsville Stars in eleven innings Sunday at Bayfront Stadium.

With the Stars leading 3-1 in the ninth, Stars RHP Casey Medlen walked Brodie Greene. Jessee Winker singled to left field. Seth Majias-Brean then drew a walk to load the bases.

Medlen exited the game and in came RHP Tanner Poppe. Poppe struck out Ross Perez. The next batter Travis Mattair was hit by Poppe on a 2-2 pitching scoring Greene making it 3-2.

Poppe was able to strikeout Marquez Smith. With two outs though, Winker scored on a passed ball by Joey Paciorek tying the game at 3-3.

In the bottom of the eleventh, Stars RHP Tommy Toledo (3-1) walked Winker to start the inning. Winker advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt.

Two batters later Mattair drove a pitch over CF D'Vontrey Richardson's head scoring Winker giving the Blue Wahoos a 4-3 walkoff victory.

LHP Brent Suter took a no decision for the Stars after he pitched seven innings. He allowed just three hits on one run.

The Stars took a 2-1 lead in the second inning after back to back home runs by Paciorek and Greg Hopkins.

Hainley Statia had an RBI single for the Stars in the sixth inning which increased the Stars lead to 3-1.

The Stars (2-2, 47-26) and Blue Wahoos (2-2, 32-41) are tied 2-2 in their five game series. The rubber match will be on Monday night. RHP Andy Moye (7-5, 3.65) will start for the Stars. Pensacola will have heralded Cincinnati prospect RHP Ben Lively (0-0,0.00) on the mound. Monday's game can be heard starting at 3:45 pm CDT on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM and wtkiradio.com.

Huntsville Box Score

LHP Brent Suter nets a deserved mention in this post with easily his best start this month. RHP Tim Dillard then pitched a perfect 8th before the unfortunate events described above.

The Paciorek-Hopkins back-to-back HR combo isn't one we'd predict normally, so kudos to them on that.

Special mention to Shea Vucinich, playing shortstop Sunday, reaching base four times (two singles, two HBP).

Huntsville Game Log

Lots of extra-inning frustration for the Stars, and Pensacola fears Shawn Zarraga --

Final: AZL Indians, @AZL Brewers 3

Maryvale Box Score

The Crew scored all their runs in the 1st inning as 19-year-old LH bat and LF Juan Ortiz hit a three-run blast to center field, scoring Jake Gatewood, who singled, and Monte Harrison, who reached on a fielder's choice. Ortiz (career stats) is stateside for the first time after hitting seven HR's combined in his two DSL seasons (that's actually a fairly significant number for that league).

The Maryvale men managed only four hits and two walks over the final eight innings.

20-year-old RF Yunior Santana singled in three trips in his stateside debut. 23-year-old catcher Leudi Otano also made his U.S. debut after three DSL seasons.

Tough baserunning day for the squad:

CS: Santana, Y (1, 2nd base by Chiang/Chu), Gatewood (1, 2nd base by Lopez, F/Calderon, K).

PO: Oquendo (1st base by Chiang).

Maryvale Game Log

Puerto Rico native Joshua Torres, a 20-year-old RHP with two DSL seasons under his belt, got the start and made his Maryvale debut, but was touched up for a three-run Indians 3rd inning that tied the game. We're certainly seeing that there's been an emphasis on the Latin starting pitchers in these early games. RHP Gian Rizzo, still just 20 years old, stranded a runner for Torres, then tossed two scoreless innings.

6th round Louisiana HS RHP David Burkhalter, still just 18 years old, followed in his pro debut, and although he allowed the eventual winning run in his second inning of work, he showed some real skill getting out of a jam that was none of his doing --

AZL Indians Top of the 6th

Pitching Change: David Burkhalter replaces Gian Rizzo.

Li-Jen Chu reaches on a fielding error by second baseman Daniel Leonardo.

Jodd Carter flies out to right fielder Yunior Santana.

Alexis Pantoja reaches on a force attempt, fielding error by shortstop Jonathan Oquendo. Li-Jen Chu to 2nd.

Silento Sayles singles on a ground ball to pitcher David Burkhalter. Li-Jen Chu to 3rd. Alexis Pantoja to 2nd.

Willi Castro flies out to center fielder Monte Harrison.

Bobby Bradley grounds into a force out, fielded by shortstop Jonathan Oquendo. Silento Sayles out at 2nd.

AZL Indians Top of the 7th

Emmanuel Tapia pops out to third baseman Sthervin Matos in foul territory.

Nathan Winfrey singles on a fly ball to left fielder Juan Ortiz.

With David Armendariz batting, Nathan Winfrey steals (1) 2nd base.

David Armendariz strikes out swinging.

Kevin Calderon singles on a fly ball to left fielder Juan Ortiz. Nathan Winfrey scores.

Jodd Carter called out on strikes.

It was a scoreless two-inning pro debut for 31st round UNC-Charlotte RHP Brock Hudgens.
