So who had 20-year-old Dominican native RHP Milton Gomez in the Opening Night starting pitcher pool? I hear crickets (literally, I do, beautiful night here in Massachusetts). Gomez, in his 4th pro season already and repeating Maryvale, dazzled in five innings (only one run, unearned, allowed). Gomez' prior peripherals have been passable (actually, a bit below passable), but he obviously showed coaches here early enough to net tonight's honor.
Gomez was one of the Brewers' more high profile international signings before inking Mallen and Pierre last year. IIRC, he got a six figure bonus.

"The Brewers have signed 6-foot-2 Dominican righthander Milton Gomez for $350,000.

Gomez, who has passed his background investigation with Major League Baseball, is a 16-year-old from Santiago who has shown an average fastball that has been up to 92 mph and feel for a curveball."

Final: Brevard County 3, Dunedin 5

Three-run first dooms Brevard in 5-3 loss to Jays

By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees

Manatees shortstop Yadiel Rivera, seen here in a game from earlier this season, went 2-for-4 with an RBI in Brevard County's 5-3 loss to the Dunedin Blue Jays on Saturday night at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium in Dunedin. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

DUNEDIN, Fla. - Behind a three-hit night from All-Star Dwight Smith, Jr., the Dunedin Blue Jays defeated the Brevard County Manatees, 5-3 on Saturday night at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium.

Smith, Jr. got the Blue Jays (2-1 second half, 47-23 overall) offense started early as his lead-off single set the tone for a three-run first inning. Following his base hit, Dalton Pompey walked to put runners at first and second. L.B. Dantzler then ripped a single to right-center to score Smith, Jr. and put Dunedin in front, 1-0.

Smith, Jr. finished the day with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate. He tallied another single in the second, before crushing a mammoth home run - his fifth of the season - off Mike Strong in the seventh.

The Blue Jays bats were not done, however. Back-to-back singles by Kevin Patterson and Santiago Nessy pushed another run across to extend the lead to two. Dunedin tallied its final run of the first when Dantzler came across on a double play off the bat of Nick Baligod.

Brevard County (1-2, 37-32) rallied back in the top of the third, but could not come through with the big hit. After Victor Roache roped a double to start the inning, the Manatees managed to load the bases with nobody out for Nathan Orf.

On the first pitch of the at-bat, Orf hit a roller towards short that turned into a 6-4-3 double play. Roache raced home to score the Manatees' first run, but that was all they could push across. Dunedin responded immediately in the bottom of the third, as Patterson deposited a solo home run over the right field wall for his sixth long ball of the year and put the Jays up 4-1.

The 'Tees managed to put together two more rallies, but the game-tying or go-ahead hit eluded them yet again.

Brevard put runners at first and second with one out in the fifth for Yadiel Rivera. The second baseman ripped a run-scoring single to center to trim the lead to 4-2, but Orf and Orlando Arcia were retired consecutively to end the threat.

Then in the eighth inning down 5-2, Brevard County brought the tying and go-ahead runs to the plate. After a single by Orf and a walk to Tyrone Taylor, Nicky Delmonico slapped a single into the right-center field gap. Orf motored home and the lead was trimmed to 5-3.

After a walk to Michael Reed loaded the bases, Cameron Garfield crushed a ball that was ticketed for left-center. However, Dunedin shortstop Peter Mooney made a fantastic leaping grab to rob Garfield.

Dunedin starting pitcher Kendall Graveman (6-3, 3.16 ERA), who took the loss against the Manatees on Monday, earned the win on Saturday against the 'Tees. The right-hander retired the first six batters he saw and faced the minimum in five of the seven innings he pitched. Graveman finished the day with two runs allowed on four hits, one walk and four strikeouts.

After a bumpy, 37 pitch first inning, Manatees starter Jorge Lopez (7-3, 3.00) settled in nicely. The right-hander battled through five innings, but suffered his first loss since April 23. Lopez surrendered four runs on a season-high eight hits, but he did retire the last eight batters he faced, including nine of his last ten.

Rivera finished with a strong night at the plate in defeat. He recorded two hits for the second consecutive night and drove in a run. Rivera has now picked up a hit in eight of his last ten games and has a .351 batting average (13-for-37) during that span.

Southpaw Hobbs Johnson (7-6, 2.57) will look to put the Manatees back in the win column on Sunday evening as they battle the Blue Jays again, with first pitch scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Ben White (3-4, 4.98), who could not make it out of the second inning in his start against Brevard this past Tuesday, will get the ball for Dunedin.

Brevard County Box Score

Yadiel Rivera had the lone multi-hit game for the Manatees, going 2-for-4. Victor Roache doubled and recorded an outfield assist. Cameron Garfield extended his hitting streak to nine games.

Brevard County Play-By-Play

After Dunedin's big first inning, the Manatees had a chance for a big inning of their own in the third, but Nathan Orf grounded in to a double play that quickly ended the threat with Brevard only picking up one run in the inning.

Brevard County Top of the 3rd

Victor Roache doubles (8) on a line drive to left fielder Dwight Smith.

Mike Garza reaches on a fielder's choice, fielded by pitcher Kendall Graveman.

Yadiel Rivera singles on a ground ball to left fielder Dwight Smith. Victor Roache to 3rd. Mike Garza to 2nd.

Nathan Orf grounds into a double play, shortstop Peter Mooney to second baseman Christian Lopes to first baseman L. B. Dantzler. Victor Roache scores. Mike Garza to 3rd. Yadiel Rivera out at 2nd.

Orlando Arcia grounds out, third baseman Andy Fermin to first baseman L. B. Dantzler.

Rattlers rally for third straight win

Brennan's two-run double in eighth breaks tie at Burlington

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

BURLINGTON, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers got another clutch hit from Taylor Brennan and scoreless relief from Clint Terry to record a 5-3 win over the Burlington Bees at Community Field on Saturday night. Brennan's two-run double in the top of the eighth inning broke a 3-3 tie and helped send Wisconsin to their third straight win to start the second half of the Midwest League season.

The Bees (38-34 overall, 0-3 second half) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Erick Aguilera singled to drive in Angel Rosa from second base to put Burlington in front against Wisconsin starter Barrett Astin.

Rafael Neda doubled with one out in the top of the third. Neda was the first base runner against Bees starter Garrett Nuss. Angel Ortega followed with a single to center and Neda beat the throw home to tie the game. Ortega moved up to second on the throw to the plate and took third on a ground out by Francisco Castillo. Omar Garcia put the Rattlers (39-33, 3-0) in the lead with a bloop single to right-center to score Ortega.

Aguilera started the Burlington fourth inning with a double. Exicardo Cayones doubled with one out to drive in Aguilera to tie the game 2-2.

The Bees took the lead back in the bottom of the sixth inning. Stephen McGee doubled with one out against reliever Tyler Spurlin. Ryan Dalton was next and he doubled to drive in McGee for a 3-2 lead.

Burlington starting pitcher Garrett Nuss left after six innings and a season-high seven strikeouts. Then, Wisconsin rallied against the Bees bullpen.

Brian Loconsole got the first two outs in the top of the seventh, but Jose Pena kept the inning alive with a single to left. Garrett Cooper worked the count full against Loconsole before lining a single to right to move Pena to third with the tying run. Rafael Neda's grounder to third could have ended the inning. However, Angel Rosa's throw to second for the force on Cooper was wild and would up in right field to allow Pena to score and tied the game 3-3.

Terry took over for Spurlin in the bottom of the seventh inning and tossed a scoreless frame to keep the game even.

Garcia started Wisconsin's eighth inning rally with a single. Michael Ratterree drew a walk and Clint Coulter's check swing blooper dropped in for a single in shallow right to load the bases. That brought Brennan, who has three walkoff hits and a grand slam for the Timber Rattlers in 2014, to the plate.

Loconsole was ahead of Brennan 1-2 when the Rattlers third baseman fouled off a tough pitch to get another swing. Then, Brennan lined the next pitch on one hop off the wall in left for a double that scored Garcia and Ratterree for a 5-3 lead.

Terry got the first two outs via the strikeout in the eighth, but gave up consecutive two-out singles to Dalton and Erick Salcedo. Kody Eaves got a hold of a 2-0 pitch from Terry, but Ratterree made the catch on the warning track in right-center with his back nearly against the 365' sign.

The Rattlers closed out the win when Terry recorded a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth. Terry walked one and struck out five in his three shutout innings to earn his first Midwest League victory.

Wisconsin is 14-3 in June and has won seven of their last eight games.

The final game of the series is Sunday afternoon at Community Field. Taylor Williams (4-1, 3.18) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. The Bees send Victor Alcantara (4-3, 3.98) to the bump. Game time is 2:00pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 1:40pm.

WP: Clint Terry (1-1)

LP: Brian Loconsole (2-3)

TIME: 2:58

ATTN: 3,040

Wisconsin Boxscore

The Rattlers start the second half winning 3 in a row... pretty sweet!

Barrett Astin and Tyler Spurlin were OK... not great and not bad, but Clint Terry rebounded from his horrendous June 15th outing with a masterful 3 innings where he allowed 2 hits and 1 walk while striking out 5.

Omar Garcia (2-4) had the only multi-hit game.

Sounds Snap Losing Streak With 7-4 Win In Salt Lake

Hermida, Pagnozzi Homer To Back Another Solid Start By Jimmy Nelson

Nashville Sounds

(Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds)

SALT LAKE CITY - Nashville hitters belted a pair of homers to back another solid start by top prospect Jimmy Nelson in the Sounds' 7-4 victory over the Salt Lake Bees at Smith's Ballpark on Saturday evening in the opener of a four-game series.

With the win, the Sounds (39-38) snapped their season-high eight-game losing streak.

Nelson (8-2) worked his 13th quality outing in 14 trips to the hill this season for Nashville, picking up the win after allowing three runs on five hits while fanning five batters in seven innings of work.

Nashville grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning against Salt Lake southpaw Justin Thomas when Hunter Morris (3-for-5) led off with a double into the right field corner and came around to score on Jeremy Hermida's one-out single.

Hermida (3-for-4) upped the visitors' advantage to 3-0 in the fourth when he slugged his seventh home run of the season, a two-run shot to right off Thomas. Morris, who preceded Hermida with a single, also scored on the blast.

Bees right fielder Brennan Boesch (3-for-4) put Salt Lake on the board in the bottom of the inning when he swatted his 12th roundtripper of the year, a two-out shot to right off Nelson. It was the outfielder's sixth homer in his past six games.

Pete Orr (2-for-5) led off the Sounds' fifth with a double and later scored on a Jeff Bianchi sacrifice fly to make it a 4-1 contest.

Catcher Matt Pagnozzi stretched the Nashville lead to 7-1 in the sixth when he smashed a three-run homer off Thomas, his fifth big fly of the year. Sean Halton and Hermida each singled earlier in the inning before scoring on the homer.

Thomas (4-7) was saddled with the loss after giving up seven runs on 10 hits and fanning eight batters over his six frames of work.

Salt Lake third sacker Luis Jimenez pulled the home team back within 7-3 in the bottom of the sixth when he cranked a line-drive two-run homer over the right field wall for his 11th home run of the season.

Alfredo Figaro worked the final two innings in relief of Nelson and allowed one run in the ninth inning.

The teams continue the series with a 2:05 p.m. CT matinee on Sunday afternoon. Right-hander Tyler Cravy (NR), who started the Southern League All-Star Game on Monday, will make his Triple-A debut for the Sounds. Salt Lake will counter with right-hander Caleb Clay (NR).

Nashville Boxscore

The streak is over... finally. As noted earlier in the thread Jimmy Nelson was good, just not as dominant as he had been in the past.

Hunter Morris (3-5,2B) and Sean Halton (2-4) were the prospects who had multi-hit games for the Sounds but they pounded out 13 hits as a team.

Tyler Cravy tomorrow should be extremely interesting.

3-run 9th lifts Brewers to 9-6 win over Osprey

By Dustin Daniel / Helena Brewers

The Helena Brewers (2-3) rallied late to top the Missoula Osprey (2-4) 9-6 in their series opener at Allegiance Field.

The Brewers jumped on the board early, rallying for four runs in the top of the first off of Osprey starter, Gabriel Moya. Brandon Diaz led off the game with a solo homerun to deep left-center and was immediately followed up by a blazing double from Tucker Neuhaus. Neuhaus would come in on an RBI triple from Dustin DeMuth. The Brewers came in to the game not having hit a triple yet in the season and recorded two in the first inning and three on the game.

The Osprey responded with three runs of their own in the first two innings, pulling to within one after Sergio Alcantara ripped an RBI double off of Josh Uhen. Uhen tossed four complete innings, giving up three runs on five hits, while walking one and striking out one.

Taking a 6-3 lead to the eighth, Missoula would tie it up after Tyler Linehan (2-0) let in three runs in the frame. Trevor Mitsui and Matt Railey had back-to-back doubles to start the inning and both would later score. Alcantara tied the game by hitting an RBI single to right to score Dane McFarland.

Tied at 6-6 entering the top of the ninth, Greg McCall led off the Brewers' offense with a single off of Brody Greer (0-1). DeMuth then slapped a single to right which snuck under the glove of McFarland. McCall would score on the play and DeMuth would advance to third. After a wild pitch and a Gregory Munoz triple, the Brewers would head to the bottom of the ninth back on top by three.

Linehan shut it down quickly, going straight through the order, recording two strikeouts to pick up his second win of the year.

The Brewers and Osprey will face off Sunday in game two of their four-game series. First pitch at Allegiance field is set for 5:05 p.m.

Brewers slip past Osprey in ninth inning

AJ Mazzolini, The Missoulian

The Missoula Osprey chased down Helena, but this one just got past them.

After forcing a tie headed into the ninth inning, the Osprey fumbled a routine single in the outfield – allowing the ball to run straight to the warning track – and let the game-winning run score all the way from first base in a 9-6 Pioneer League loss.

The Osprey doubled their run output in the bottom of the eighth inning with three scores that tied things 6-6. After Greg McCall led off the ninth with a single to right, Dustin DeMuth hit a nearly identical ball to Missoula right fielder Dane McFarland. Keeping an eye on the base runner, McFarland bypassed the roller as Helena took back the lead.

“That’s part of the game, guys are gonna make an error,” Osprey manager Audo Vicente said. “We can’t crucify anybody. … They’re in the learning process, how to be more focused especially late in the game.”

The Brewers (2-3), who finished with 15 hits, tacked on two more runs to keep the Osprey (2-4) at bay for the home half of the final inning.

DeMuth hammered the ball against the Osprey, finishing a home run short of the cycle. He was 4 for 4 and also reached base via a hit by pitch.

Before Saturday’s wacky ending, Missoula put itself back in the game late for a third straight night. Trevor Mitsui doubled to start the home eighth and Matt Railey followed with an RBI double of his own. McFarland brought Missoula within a run with his RBI single and Sergio Alcantara tied the game with another single three batters later.

“I’ve been struggling these first few games, but I’ve been working on staying through the ball,” said Railey, whose 2-for-4 night that included hit his first pro home run improved the third-round draft pick’s batting average to .200. “It’s a big confidence builder. I’m just out there trying to put the ball in play.”

The Helena power show got started before many of the 3,129 fans in attendance even found their seats. Leadoff batter Brandon Diaz battled through a full count and sent a home run over the left-center field fence, but the Brewers’ big bats weren’t through.

Helena scored three more runs before the Osprey could take their turn at bat. Tucker Neuhaus doubled after Diaz’s bomb and then, with two outs each, DeMuth tripled into the gap in left and Mitch Meyer doubled him home.

Helena batters found back-to-back doubles two innings later in the third when McCall got on ahead of DeMuth’s two-bagger.

All of Helena’s six early runs came off Missoula pitcher Gabriel Moya, who was making his second start against the Brewers already this season. He earned the win on opening night in Helena in an 8-5 game.

DeMuth didn’t play in that one, but his team passed along the intel on the O’s starter.

“They gave me the scouting report: a lot of fastballs that ran a little bit, then he had a pretty good breaker,” DeMuth said.

After Helena’s four-spot in the first, the Osprey answered by scoring three of their own over the next two frames. Justin Williams singled in Alcantara in the home first before Railey’s home run and an Alcantara RBI double helped the Osprey score twice in the second.

The Missoula bullpen stood strong after Moya checked out in the fifth inning having surrendered the first six runs on 11 hits. Will Landsheft threw 2 2-3 scoreless innings and Jency Solis followed with a scoreless eighth. Brody Greer’s ninth inning may have been different if not for that big error.

“Our bullpen has been very solid,” Vicente said of his relievers, who allowed just one earned run in nine innings pitched during their two-game series with Great Falls that ended Friday. “You can see that like today, Moya giving up four (runs) early. Landsheft coming in with the bases loaded, no runs.”

Even the three runs charged to Greer went down as unearned. That thanks to the error that even surprised the Helena side.

“I saw it get away from him, didn’t really think he was gonna get all the way to home though,” DeMuth said of the game-changing play. “It kicked far enough away and I guess (McCall) was moving pretty well.”

Alcantara led Missoula with three of his own and two RBIs.

Brewers’ best prospect Jimmy Nelson shuts down Bees

By Steve Luhm, The Salt Lake Tribune

Pitcher Jimmy Nelson is rated the No. 1 prospect in the Milwaukee Brewers organization by Baseball America.

The Bees won’t argue.

Nelson, a 25-year-old right-hander, scattered five hits over seven innings Saturday night at Smith’s Ballpark, where 12,607 fans watched the Sounds score a 7-4 victory over Salt Lake.

Nelson, whose fastball touched 98 mph early in the game, struck out five and walked one while improving his record to 8-2. He has now fanned 96 batters in 90 1⁄3 innings with Nashville this season.

Luis Jimenez hit a two-run homer and Brennan Boesch added a solo shot for the Bees, but Nelson was in control most of the way.

"I thought he threw the ball well," said Salt Lake manager Keith Johnson. "Obviously he has a power sinker. He has a pretty good slider. His secondary stuff is really good for someone his age. He’s going to have a long career in this game."

Nelson also got a little help from the Los Angles Angels.

In the 24-hour span starting Friday morning, the Bees’ parent club called up Grant Green and Efren Navarro, leaving Salt Lake without two of its best bats.

In addition, Taylor Lindsey and Matt Long remain on the disabled list, although both made a rehab start with Orem in the Pioneer League on Saturday.

Asked about all the roster moves the Bees have endured this season, Johnson smiled.

"And it will just keep coming," he said. "At the same time, it’s opportunity for guys. … As long as those guys play well and the big club continues to win, it’s all worth it."

Nashville, which snapped an eight-game losing streak, took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Hunter Morris led off with a double and, one out later, Jeremy Hermida singled him home.

The Sounds bumped their lead in the fourth on Hermida’s two-run homer, but Boesch kept the Bees close in the bottom half of the inning with a long home run to right on a 2-2 pitch from Nelson.

It was Boesch’s sixth homer in the last six games.

After Nashville added a run in the fifth on Jeff Bianchi’s sacrifice fly, the Sounds broke away with a three-run sixth. Sean Halton and Hermida singled to open the inning before Matt Pagnozzi drilled a homer, making it 7-1.

Stars Win Nail Bitter Against Wahoos

Steve Jarnicki, Huntsville Stars

Pensacola, FL - The Huntsville Stars built an early 3-0 lead but had to come back late to hang on to defeat the Pensacola Blue Wahoos 5-4 Saturday night at Bayfront Stadium.

In the first inning, the Stars got back to back RBI singles from Jason Rogers and Shawn Zarraga. Greg Hopkins also had an RBI double making it 3-0.

Pensacola scored in the first against Stars RHP Drew Gagnon. Jesse Winker grounded out to second base scoring Yorman Rodriguez making it 3-1.

The Blue Wahoos tied the game in the fourth inning. Gagnon delivered back to back wild pitches allowing Brodie Greene and Winker to score tying the game at 3-3.

In the fifth the Blue Wahoos took the lead. Rodriguez singled off the wall in right field scoring Devin Lohman giving them a 4-3 edge.

Gagnon, who did not factor into the decision, went five innings allowing four runs on five hits. He did not walk a batter as he struck out four.

The Stars tied the game and took the lead for good in the seventh. Kentrail Davis, who was at second base, advanced to third on a wild pitch. He scored when catcher Ross Perez tried to throw him out and the ball went up the third base line.

Rogers later in the inning broke the tie on a hard single past the shortstop scoring Shea Vucinich giving the Stars a 5-4 lead.

Jose De La Torre(1-0) earned the win out of the Stars bullpen by pitching two scoreless innings.

David Goforth earned his 15th save after he pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings. Goforth stranded two runners in the eighth and recorded a 1-2-3 ninth for the save.

Rogers led the Stars with a 3-5 performance with two RBI.

The Stars (2-1, 47-25) and Blue Wahoos (1-2, 32-40) will play game four of their five game series on Sunday as the Stars lead the series 2-1. LHP Brent Suter (7-5, 3.65) will start for the Stars. Pensacola will have RHP Robert Stephenson (3-5, 3.99) on the mound. Sunday's game can be heard starting at 3:45 pm CDT on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM and wtkiradio.com.

Huntsville Box Score

Jason Rogers clearly the big dog here although Shawn Zarraga did reach base twice (dropping his OBP to .487) and Zarraga's 28 RBI are impressive given his somewhat more limited playing time (particularly before Adam Weisenburger's broken finger). Tough 0-for-5 for Nick Ramirez.

Maryvale Box Score

Wonderful job by Brewer hurlers here - just six hits allowed (HR for the sole tally), nine K's, and only one walk. 19-year-old 3rd-year pro Dominican RHP Miguel Diaz is following up a nice 2013 DSL campaign and was strong in his stateside debut here. Then 22-year-old 35th round LHP David Carver (Lamar University) and 6'5" 21-year-old 13th round RHP Kaleb Earls (Limestone College) combined to finish up over four scoreless innings.

Brewers reached base 12 times (eight hits, three walks, one HBP). LF Troy Stokes and 3B Sthervin Matos had the extra-base hits (doubles). Left-handed bat Tanner Norton had the day's best offensive performance, on base three times, and drove in two. Norton (will be 19 in July) again played first base as 27th round Wake Forest catcher Matt Martin took his turn behind the plate while making his pro debut.

Switch-hitting 18-year-old 14th round Puerto Rico high school SS Jonathan Oquendo made his pro debut as well, and his keystone partner, fellow switch-hitting 18-year-old DSL second baseman Daniel Leonardo, singled in his stateside debut.
