I think you'll find that even elite hitters are going to show pretty crummy numbers when they're hitting from behind in the count. What he needs to do (and you hit the nail on the head) is get back to being more patient, swinging at balls in the hitting zone, and getting ahead in the count.

Yeah, I'm sure the averages aren't great or anything, but even compared to Braun's previous years, his averages down in the count are well off the norm for him. And as you said, he needs to just be more patient and swing at strikes. It feels like right now he'll get down 0-2 or 1-2 after either fouling off the first pitch, then watches the second one go in for a strike (or vice versa) - then he has to go more into protect mode. I think he's been getting some good pitches to hit early in the count, but his timing or something is a little off right now, causing him to foul off pitches he usually hits hard. I'm not overly concerned right now though.

I'll say this for Estrada: his strike to ball ratio is outstanding.

BA saying he couldn't understand why Marco has been knocked around while having thrown so many strikes made me twitch a little. Can you really not understand that leaving meaty pitches over the plate will result in 1) lots of strikes & 2) lots of hits?

I'm not completely sure of this, but I'm pretty certain that Lucroy was a PTBNL option for the Indians in that trade too. So at least they didn't go that route.

I don't recall that at all. If anyone can dig up any info on this, it'd be interesting to see.

Still unsure if he actually was an option.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Hah - of course a good report on it would have been right on this very site. Kudos for searching & finding, Brew4U

One thing to consider -- would we have extended Gomez before his contract expired if Brantley had still been in our system at the time? I'm not sure we would have.

I don't think Brantley was the type of prspect that would have kept us from offering an extension to go-go.

I believe Cleveland had their choice of either Brantley or Taylor Green, not Lucroy.

Brantley or Green were the only two that Melvin confirmed because they were the "finalists" that Cleveland had it narrowed down to, but it's long been speculated that Lorenzo Cain and Lucroy were also on the list. It would be odd if there were only 2 names on the list.

We would have chosen the name instead of Cleveland had we not made the list that year.

Why? Brantley would almost certainly be in RF for the Brewers. And its questionable if he would be more than a #4 OFer until now. He hasn't had a great bat until this season and its hard to believe his power will stay going forward.

Brantley had an awfully nice 2012, and we re-signed Gomez after 2012. Course we don't know if he would have had enough playing time to do so here or how that was going to be split.

Prior to 2012 Gomez was still largely considered a bust, so it's entirely possible that we wouldn't have stuck with him in the starting lineup much or at least split it pretty evenly among them. I think trading Cain had the same effect in reverse, because we were pretty high on Cain.

All just speculation, of course -- I'm just not sure how much faith we still had in Gomez going into 2012 or if he was just our best option.
