Mark McCarter, a columnist for The Huntsville Times/al.com and long-time chronicler of the Southern League, will be signing copies of his new book, "Never A Bad Game: Fifty Years of the Southern League" tonight in Pensacola.

http://media.al.com/sports_impact/photo/15210068-large.jpg

Atlanta Braves reliever Craig Kimbrel, a Huntsville native, wrote the foreword.

The book, which will be sold at the event for $20, tax included, is a compilation of 50 different stories about different games, teams, events and players, some of them household names, many whose stories were told only in the agate type of a box score.

Specific to Huntsville there are chapters on the late Don Mincher, Jose Canseco, the hard-hitting '97 Stars team and the Stars' involvement in the longest game in Southern League history.

The book, printed by August Publications, also includes a look at the league's history and its forefathers, as well as lists of the best 50 major leaguers who have played in the Southern League and the 50 best players in league history who never hit it big.

Wrote Mark Bechtel, a senior editor at Sports Illustrated, "As someone who spent an inordinate amount of time watching the Huntsville Stars--go ahead, bet me that I can't name their 1985 championship-winning starting lineup--and can recite Joe Charboneau's Chattanooga Lookouts stat line by heart, I thought I knew all I needed to about the Southern League. I was wrong. Few history lessons are as entertaining as Never a Bad Game, and few writers are as entertaining as Mark McCarter. This book is proof that the best stories are often found far away from the glare of the big-league spotlight."

The book is available through August Publications. Personally inscribed copies may be obtained through the book's Facebook page, or contact Mark at mmccarter "at" al.com.

Rattlers storm back to beat Bees

Wisconsin opens second half with 8-4 win over Burlington

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

BURLINGTON, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers used a six-run fourth inning to erase a deficit and go on to defeat the Burlington Bees 8-4 in game one of a doubleheader on Friday night at Community Field. The game was the first game of the second half for both teams.

Wisconsin (37-33 overall, 1-0 second half) grabbed the early lead with two runs in the first inning against Bees starting pitcher Ryan Etsell. Omar Garcia doubled with one out. Michael Ratterree followed with an RBI single. Clint Coulter was next and he doubled to the wall in right-center to put runners on second and third. Taylor Brennan drove in Ratterree with a sacrifice fly to center and the Rattlers were up 2-0.

Burlington (38-32, 0-1) stormed back against Rattlers starting pitcher Anthony Banda with three runs in the bottom of the first. Kody Eaves drew a leadoff walk. Angel Rosa doubled to drive in Eaves. A single by Mike Fish scored Rosa with the tying run. Fish would score later in the inning on a wild pitch by Banda and the Bees were up 3-2.

Coulter tied the game with a leadoff home run in the top of the fourth. The homer was the twelfth of the season for Coulter and it gave the Rattlers offense a jump start.

Brennan and Francisco Castillo followed with singles. Then, Garrett Cooper launched a long home run to center. The three-run shot by Cooper put the Rattlers up 6-3 and knocked Bees starter Ryan Estell out of the game.

Burlington reliever Ben Carlson came into the game and retired the first two batters he faced. But, the rally restarted with consecutive singles by Johnny Davis and Garcia. Ratterree blooped in a single to right to knock in Davis. Coulter collected his second hit of the inning - and third of the game - with an RBI single to drive in Garcia and the Rattlers were up 8-3.

Banda regrouped after the first inning and didn't allow another run through his five total innings of work. Banda matched his professional single game high for strikeouts with eight.

Trevor Seidenberger tossed the final two innings out of the Rattlers bullpen. Ryan Dalton hit a leadoff homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to account for the final run of the game.

HOME RUNS:

Wisconsin Game 1 Boxscore

That's quite the way to start the second half, what a monster game from Clint Coulter (3-3,2B,HR)! I've said it before but he's a better hitter than there are pitchers in the league this year. In fact the entire top of the order was very strong with Johnny Davis (2-4,2B), Omar Garcia (2-4,2B), and Michael Ratterree (2-4) all turning in multi-hit games.

Rattlers start second half with doubleheader sweep

Wisconsin gets a twinbill sweep at Burlington with 4-1 victory in nightcap

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

BURLINGTON, IA - Zach Quintana pitched five scoreless innings as the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers beat the Burlington Bees 4-1 in game two of Friday's doubleheader at Community Field. The win in game two of the twinbill earned the Rattlers a sweep of the Bees to start the second half of the Midwest League season.

Wisconsin (38-33 overall, 2-0 second half) went up 2-0 with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. Clint Coulter singled to start the inning. Jose Pena followed with a triple to right-center to chase Coulter home. Pena scored later in the inning on a wild pitch.

Zach Quintana made that lead stand. The right-hander tossed five scoreless innings, allowed two hits, walked one, and struck out a season-high six batters.

The Rattlers added to their lead in the top of the sixth. Francisco Castillo drew a walk with one out. Michael Ratterree lined a triple to right-center and Castillo scored easily for a 3-0 advantage.

Burlington (38-33, 0-2) cut into the Wisconsin lead with a run in the bottom of the sixth against reliever Tristan Archer. Cambric Moye walked and Erick Salcedo singled to start the inning. A passed ball moved both runners into scoring position. Archer got the first out on a grounder to third that held the runners at their stations. A slow grounder off the bat of Mike Fish did get Moye home from third to make it 3-1.

Eric Aguilera was next and he lined a pitch ticketed for right field and an RBI single. But, Castillo, the Rattlers second baseman, leapt and snagged the line drive for the final out of the frame.

Wisconsin added to their lead again in the top of the seventh. Pena started the inning with a single and was replaced by pinch-runner Omar Garcia. A wild pitch moved Garcia to second base. Rafael Neda reached on an error that put Garcia at third. Then, Angel Ortega put down a perfect safety squeeze bunt up the first base line to score Garcia for a 4-1 lead.

Archer pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh to close out the Bees and earned his fourth save of the season.

Game three of the series is Saturday night at Community Field. Wisconsin plans to send Barrett Astin (5-3, 4.52) to the mound as the starting pitcher. Burlington has scheduled Garrett Nuss (3-0, 3.93) as their starter. Game time is 6:30pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:10pm.

WP: Zach Quintana (2-4)

LP: Clint Sharp (3-4)

SAVE: Tristan Archer (4)

Wisconsin Game 2 Boxscore

SWEEP! Obviously I'm a pretty happy camper with tonight's action thus far.

Zach Quintana had his best start since April 19th and I missed all of it... :( I wasn't able to tune in until the 6th, so I have no idea what he had going on other than the ultimate result was fantastic.

The T-Rats didn't have many hits but they made the most of their opportunities with plenty of assists from the Burlington defense. Jose Pena (2-3,3B) had the only multi-hit game.

Final: Huntsville 11, @Pensacola 1

RAMIREZ POWERS STARS PAST PENSACOLA

Pensacola, FL - Huntsville Stars first baseman Nick Ramirez launched a grand slam in the eighth inning that pulled the Stars away from the Pensacola Blue Wahoos in a 11-1 Stars win Friday night at Bayfront Stadium.

Ramirez hit two home runs in the Stars win as he finished 3-4 with 6 RBI. Ramirez now has 13 home runs on the season.

The Stars took a 3-0 lead in the first inning against Pensacola RHP Jon Moscot (4-6).

Hainley Statia roped an RBI triple down the right field line scoring Kentrail Davis for an early 1-0 lead. The next batter was Ramirez who drove a double over centerfielder Yorman Rodriguez’s head.

Shawn Zarraga also produced an RBI single in the first inning giving the Stars a 3-0 lead.

In the Stars fifth, Ramirez hit a solo home run to right field. Zarraga also scored in the inning on a throwing error by second baseman Ryan Wright which put the Stars ahead 5-0.

Moscot, who took the loss, worked five innings allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits.

Jed Bradley (1-2) earned his first Double-A win, pitching five scoreless innings for the Stars. He allowed five hits and walked four. He stranded eight runners on base and worked out of several key jams to hold the Blue Wahoos off the scoreboard. Bradley induced three double play balls in his start.

Pensacola scored their lone run of the game in the seventh off Casey Medlen. Rodriguez hit a solo home run, his third homer of the year, cutting it to a 5-1 deficit.

The Stars put the game away in the eighth inning. Shea Vucinich had a pinch hit RBI single making it 6-1.

The big blow was the back to back homers by Ramirez and Jason Rogers. Ramirez’s grand slam was crushed over the right center field wall and put the Stars ahead 10-1.

Rogers then followed with a solo home run to left center, his 7th of the season.

Zarraga finished 4-5 with an RBI.

The Stars (1-1, 47-25) and Blue Wahoos (1-1, 32-40) will play game three of their five game series on Saturday as the series is tied at 1-1. RHP Drew Gagnon (4-2, 2.95) will start for the Stars. Pensacola will have RHP Michael Lorenzen (4-4, 2.41) on the mound. Saturday’s game can be heard with Steve Jarnicki starting at 6:15 pm CDT on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM and wtkiradio.com.

Huntsville Box Score

Guess Nick Ramirez figured the only way he could outshine Shawn Zarraga was to have the monster night described above. Ramirez is now 3rd in the league in RBI with 51, and tied for 2nd in HR's with 13. With the Cubs' Kris Bryant now promoted, Nick has a chance to climb even further.

As for Zarraga, he's set to be a 25-year-old minor league free agent switch-hitting catcher at season's end -- he's doing all he can to have the Brewers retain him via a 40-man roster spot.

Seven-game hit streak for Kentrail Davis, who reached three times here.

Final: AZL Brewers 5, @AZL Reds 2

Arizona Box Score

So who had 20-year-old Dominican native RHP Milton Gomez in the Opening Night starting pitcher pool? I hear crickets (literally, I do, beautiful night here in Massachusetts). Gomez, in his 4th pro season already and repeating Maryvale, dazzled in five innings (only one run, unearned, allowed). Gomez' prior peripherals have been passable (actually, a bit below passable), but he obviously showed coaches here early enough to net tonight's honor.

Welcome back, RHP Seth Harvey! The 26-year-old fomer Timber Rattler and Manatee closer is on his way back from Tommy John surgery 12 months ago. Two innings here, one run.

So apparently 24th round RHP Bubba Blau's real first name is Bubba. You rock, Mom & Dad! Congrats, Bubba, on the successful pro debut and two-inning save.

OK, on to to the bats -- SS Jake Gatewood, we'll catch up with you later.

2nd round CF Monte Harrison was thrown out in his stolen base attempt - we say it was pass interference. The Nebraska University WR recruit has a 1.000 OBP after his pro debut (two singles, two walks). Sweet.

How about 18-year-old 4th round LF Troy Stokes Jr.? Batting leadoff, he singled and walked in five trips, stole two bases, and scored two runs.

So much to digest here:

Don't sleep on Carlos Belonis, he's now taken his 6'3", 175 lb. frame to right field after missing all but a handful of games last summer with a fractured thumb. Two singles tonight.

Is Tanner Norton, still just 18 for a couple of more weeks, transitioning from catcher to first base?

Four products of the Dominican Academy were in the starting lineup, and it was the stateside debut for each - Belonis, 3B Sthervin Matos (three-run HR!), DH Juan Ortiz, and 2B Jorge Quiterio.

Dutch catcher Milan Post doubled in his pro debut. His two passed balls were the only defensive miscues by the young Brewers all night.

Oh, Mr. Gatewood? Shake it off, young man, you'll laugh about your golden sombrero pro debut (0-for-5, four K's) someday.

Arizona Game Log

Opposite field!

AZL Brewers Top of the 3rd

Troy Stokes singles on a line drive to center fielder Jose Siri.

Jake Gatewood strikes out swinging.

With Monte Harrison batting, Troy Stokes steals (1) 2nd base.

Monte Harrison walks.

Sthervin Matos homers (1) on a fly ball to right field. Troy Stokes scores. Monte Harrison scores.

Juan Ortiz strikes out swinging.

Carlos Belonis grounds out, third baseman Gavin LaValley to first baseman Paul Kronenfeld.

Manatees blast Daytona, 9-3

By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees

Brevard County center fielder Tyrone Taylor, seen here in a game from earlier this season, went 2-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored and one RBI in a 9-3 win over the Daytona Cubs on Friday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Starting pitcher Tyler Wagner struck out a season-high nine hitters, while his offense tallied 14 hits in the Brevard County Manatees' 9-3 victory over the Daytona Cubs at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Friday night.

Wagner (6-4, 1.96 ERA), who threw seven innings of shutout basesball against the Yankees in his last outing on June 9, blanked the Cubs over five frames. The Florida State League All-Star allowed just two hits and walked two en route to earning the win.

The Manatees (1-1 second half, 37-31 overall) grabbed Wagner the lead before he even toed the rubber. Nathan Orf led off the game by depositing an 0-2 pitch off the left field wall for a double. Two batters later, Orf came across to score the game's opening run after a pair of ground outs by Orlando Arcia and Tyrone Taylor.

It took until the sixth inning for Brevard County to break the game open. Thanks to a double by Taylor and a single plus a stolen base by Cameron Garfield, the Manatees had runners at second and third with one out for Nicky Delmonico.

On a 2-2, Delmonico hit a broken bat, jam shot towards the third baseman. Jordan Hankins - who was making his FSL debut - could not field it cleanly and the ball trickled behind him, as Taylor crossed the plate.

However, neither Hankins nor shortstop Marco Hernandez could decide who would pick up the unattended ball. As a result of the confusion, Garfield motored home from second base and Delmonico advanced to second to put Brevard up 4-0.

After Delmonico was tagged out trying to advance to third on a dirt ball, Victor Roache demolished a pitch from Daytona reliever Jose Rosario over the left field fence for a solo homer - his team-leading eighth of the season - to put the Manatees up by five.

Daytona (1-1, 28-42) rallied to score a run in the bottom of the sixth, on a RBI double by Dan Vogelbach. However, the 'Tees got two runs back in the top of the seventh. After a walk to Arcia and a Taylor double, Garfield poked a one-out, two-run single to left to extend the Manatees lead to 7-1.

However, the Cubs' bats did not go down without a fight. Manatees releiver Martin Viramontes struggled to find the strike zone as he surrendered a single to Gioskar Amaya and issued a walk to Marco Hernandez, to start the bottom half of the inning.

After a one-out walk to Wes Darvill, Greg Holle was called upon to try and get out of the jam. The tall righty forced Albert Almore to hit a run-scoring ground out back to the mound before facing Vogelback. Daytona's first baseban, who drove in two runs on a homer and a double the night prior, smacked a RBI double to pull the Cubs within four runs at 7-3.

Holle then went on to retire seven of the last nine batters he faced, to finish off Brevard's first win of the second half. He threw 2.2 scoreless innings of relief and allowed three hits, along with three strikeouts.

Roache's sixth inning blast was not the only long ball Brevard hit on the night. Yadiel Rivera smoked his third homer of the season, off of Cubs starter Nathan Dorris. Delmonico left no doubt as to the final outcome of the game as he crushed a two-run bomb off of Zack Godley.

Brevard County's pitching staff struck out a season-high 15 and also received plenty of help from the defense. With the bases loaded and two outs in the third inning, Almora lofted a soft fly ball to shallow center field but Taylor made a tremendous sliding grab to take away multiple runs and end the inning.

Not to be outdone, Arcia made an unreal, highlight play to end the sixth. With runners on second and third with two outs, Hankins flipped a high pop-up down the third-base line in foul territory. Delmonico raced towards the fence, but seemed to lose the ball in the lights. Out of nowhere, Arcia came storming in and made an incredible, feet-first, sliding grab in the Daytona bullpen to end the threat.

Brevard's bats as a whole had a fantastic night as the 'Tees compiled 14 hits, with eight of them going for extra bases. All but one player in the lineup picked up at least one hit. The lone player who did not, Arcia, still managed to reach base twice on walks. Five players - Orf, Taylor, Garfield, Rivera and Mike Garza - all tallied multi-hit games in the victory.

The Manatees will stay on the road and open up a three-game series at 6:30 p.m. with North Division first half champions, the Dunedin Blue Jays. Jorge Lopez (7-2, 2.69) will get the ball for Brevard County, while Dunedin will counter with Kendall Graveman (5-3, 3.24)

Brevard County Box Score

A season high nine strikeouts from Tyler Wagner in just five innings of work and his ERA is under 2.00 now for the season. You'd have to think he'd be in line for a bump up to Huntsville before too much longer.

Nice to see the home run balls leaving the yard tonight also. Home runs from Victor Roache, Yadiel Rivera and Nicky Delmonico as eight of Brevard's 14 hits went for extra bases. Two more doubles from Tyrone Taylor, gives him 27 for the year.

Brevard County Play-By-Play

Nice start to the night for Wagner, who retired the first five batters he faced via the strikeout.

Daytona Bottom of the 1st

Zeke DeVoss strikes out swinging.

Wes Darvill strikes out swinging.

Albert Almora strikes out swinging.

Daytona Bottom of the 2nd

Dan Vogelbach strikes out swinging.

Willson Contreras called out on strikes.

Bijan Rademacher grounds out, third baseman Nick Delmonico to first baseman Mike Garza.

Oh Nashville, that's just painful (and sad).

Donovan Hand just "earned" the least-deserved hold of all time. He can't possibly be the closer any more, and this Sounds team is looking more and more like the other Nashville squads of this decade.

Sigh...details in a bit...
