The Ortega boys --

Not to be confused with last night's Helena starter, who was Venezuelan RHP Jorge Ortega (who turns 21 on Friday, by the way), Thursday night's Helena starter will be making his formal Brewers' organization debut.

21-year-old LHP Luis Ortega gets the nod Thursday. He was acquired from the Red Sox for Burke Badenhop last winter. Listed at just 5'10, 155, Luis Ortega will be making his first appearance before a traditional stadium crowd, as the Dominican native has played one season in the DSL and one season in the Gulf Coast League in Florida.

Miscellaneous notes from Steve in Huntsville --

The Stars completed a series sweep over Chattanooga which marked their second series sweep over a team this year. They also swept Tennessee May 26th-30th. Both sweeps came in Huntsville at Joe Davis Stadium...The Stars took 11 out of the 14 series in the first half of the season with seven of them being decided after the first three games…

During the Stars six game winning streak every winning pitcher for the Stars has been out of the bullpen. Tim Dillard has two wins while Casey Medlen, Tommy Toledo, David Goforth and Brent Suter have all factored into the decisions…

Last Saturday, the Stars for the 5th straight game hit at least one homer. The Stars are 27-9 when they hit at least one home run in a game. 28 out of the 45 or 62% of the Stars home runs have been solo shots. Hainley Statia hit a two-run homer in the 2nd inning. Statia had a very impressive series against Chattanooga going 7-15 with a HR and 6 RBI’s. He had two 3 RBI games against the Lookouts…. Mitch Haniger did not play Saturday. In his last 25 games, Haniger is batting .330 (31-94) with 7 home runs and 17 rbi’s…. Haniger has enjoyed hitting at home with his .314 home batting average compared to .209 on the road. Only Shawn Zarraga (.434) swings the bat better at home. Eight of Haniger’s ten home runs have been hit in Huntsville. Haniger’s six home runs in the month of June are the most in the Southern League. Haniger is on pace for 22 home runs this year… Zarraga did not play Saturday. In his last nine games, Zarraga is batting .619 (13-21) with 8 RBI… Kentrail Davis has batted leadoff now in eleven straight games. He has an RBI in four straight games. In his ten games as the leadoff man, he is 13-43, .302 with an on base percentage of .375. This season Davis has batted first, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth. The only spot in the order that Davis has had a higher batting average than the leadoff spot is 7th (.333 BA 15 G)…

Since the Stars clinched the 1st half championship they’ve gone 7-5…In the month of June alone, the Stars are 7-7. The Stars have the 2nd highest team ERA in June of any team in the league with a 5.13 team ERA.

Speaking of Burke Badenhop:

Via Jen McCaffrey --

"Badenhop stretched his career-best scoreless inning streak to 16 innings and has now thrown 30.1 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run. That marks the third-longest relief stretch of that kind in Red Sox history behind Koji Uehara in 2013 and Dick Radatz in 1963."

Final: @Pensacola 7, Huntsville 2

BIG FIRST INNING LEADS TO PENSACOLA WIN

Steve Jarnicki, Huntsville Stars

Pensacola, FL - The Pensacola Blue Wahoos took advantage of three first inning walks from Stars RHP Jacob Barnes (1-3) and posted five runs in the opening frame for a series opening 7-2 win over the Stars Thursday night at Bayfront Stadium.

After Barnes retired the first batter in the first, Ryan Wright reached on a throwing error by shortstop Nick Shaw. Barnes then proceeded to walk back to back hitters.

With the bases loaded Ross Perez cleared the bases on a three-run double to right center giving Pensacola a 3-0 lead.

Kyle Waldrop made it 4-0 on his RBI single into right. Devin Lohman capped off the scoring with a sacrifice fly putting the Blue Wahoos ahead 5-0.

Barnes only lasted 1.2 innings as he walked five batters. He allowed five runs (three earned).

The Stars got on the board in the fourth inning when Shawn Zarraga singled home Josh Prince to make it 5-1.

In the fifth the Stars chipped away at the deficit. Shaw was able to score on a wild pitch from Pensacola RHP Daniel Corcino (7-5) making it 5-2.

Corcino, who earned the win, pitched six innings. He allowed two runs on six hits.

Pensacola scored the final two runs of the game to put the game away. In the sixth inning, Kyle Waldrop broke for third on a wild pitch from Andy Moye. The catcher Zarraga threw to third but it went into left field scoring Waldrop.

The Blue Wahoos made the score 7-2 in the eigth on Perez’s solo home run. It was his third of the year as it came against Tommy Toledo.

The Stars (0-1, 46-25) and Blue Wahoos (1-0, 32-39) will play game two of their five game series on Friday. LHP Jed Bradley(0-2, 5.14) will start for the Stars. Pensacola will have RHP Jon Moscot (4-5,2.56) on the mound. Friday’s game can be heard starting at 6:15 pm CDT on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM and wtkiradio.com.

Huntsville Box Score

This was an ugly start for 24-year-old RHP Jacob Barnes, that's 22 walks in his first 34.1 innings at the AA level, and that's not the Barnes we saw at Brevard last summer (36 walks in 105.1 IP). RHP Tim Dillard was stellar, stranding Barnes' two baserunners and allowing only one baserunner in 3.1 innings. Heck, Tim also doubled for the Stars' lone extra-base hit and had a sacrifice bunt. Honestly, one could see Dillard joining a flush September roster as an experienced arm chewing up low-leverage innings, if he keeps it up.

SS Nick Shaw had the lone two-hit game, both singles, no surprise -- 37 of 42 hits are singles, "slugging" .268.

Catcher Shawn Zarraga is going to see plenty of time behind the plate while Adam Weisenburger's broken index finger is on the mend, so we can gawk at his numbers some more. With a single and walk tonight, Zarraga has three times as many walks as strikeouts on the season (30-to-10 in 182 plate appearances). His line is now at .378/.481/.497 (.977 OPS).

Brevard drops second half opener to Cubs, 7-4

VIERA, Fla. - In the first game of the second half, a big seventh inning by the Daytona Cubs sank the Brevard County Manatees, 7-4 at Space Coast Stadium on Thursday night.

Brevard County (0-1 second half, 36-31 overall) was clinging to a 4-3 lead at the start of the seventh and it looked like the score would remain that way. However with two outs, Albert Almora ripped a double to left-center field off of reliever Chad Pierce to keep the inning alive. Dan Vogelbach came up next and delivered the biggest hit of the game to that point. He drilled a double to score Almora and tie the game.

After Pierce walked Bijan Rademacher to put a pair on with two outs, the Manatees called on Kevin Shackelford out of the bullpen to try to escape the inning with the tie intact. The first hitter he faced was Wilson Contreras and the catcher greeted him rudely by hitting a laser to left-center field. Contreras' double scored both Vogelbach and Rademacher to give the Cubs a 6-4 lead.

Daytona (1-0, 27-42) tacked on one more insurance run in the eighth inning before Andrew McKirahan finished off the win. The left-hander allowed a double to Nathan Orf, but otherwise retired the Manatees for his sixth save of the season.

Daytona and Brevard traded runs early in the evening. The Cubs took advantage of Damien Magnifico's erratic control in the first inning. The 'Tees starter walked the first two men he faced and skipped a wild pitch past Cameron Garfield to score Pin-Chie Chen with the first run of the game. Vogelbach later hammered a solo homer to left-center to give Daytona a 2-0 lead.

The Manatees answered in the bottom of the inning. Orf led off with a single and Orlando Arcia slammed a double to bring him home. Later in the inning, Nicky Delmonico tied the ballgame with an RBI single.

Two innings later, the Manatees took their first and only lead of the game. Tyrone Taylor led off the inning with a triple and Michael Reed knocked him home with a double to put the 'Tees ahead, 3-2. Delmonico then came through with his second big hit of the night, as he smacked an RBI double to extend the lead to two runs.

After Daytona pulled within one run in the third on an RBI single by Gioskar Amaya, Taylor made a tremendous throw from center field to preserve Brevard County's lead. With Rock Shoulders on second and one out, Zeke DeVoss singled up the middle. Shoulders rounded third and tried to score, but Taylor unleashed a bullet of a throw to the plate. Garfield slapped the tag on Shoulders to keep the 'Tees on top by one run.

The Manatees eventually relinquished that lead and Cubs reliever Starling Peralta came away with a much-deserved win in relief. Peralta, who relieved starter Felix Pena in the fourth inning, pitched 4.2 perfect frames and struck out four.

Pierce took the loss in relief, as he allowed three runs, including the tying and go-ahead runs, over 2.2 innings of work. He gave up two hits, walked two and struck out four. In his shortest start since May 1, Magnifico allowed three runs on six hits, while walking four and fanning four in four innings.

Brevard County and Daytona will face off again on Friday night, this time at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Tyler Wagner (5-4, 2.09) will get the starting nod for the Manatees against southpaw Nathan Dorris (2-3, 5.96) for the Cubs.

Sounds' Skid Hits Unlucky Seven In Vegas

Nashville Sounds

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/2/0/6/80694206/cuts/FaluRed_q0jc33ro_8n9orx3r.jpg

(Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds)

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Nashville Sounds suffered their seventh straight loss on Thursday evening at Cashman Field, falling 6-2 to the host Las Vegas 51s.

Nashville (38-37) fell 2 1/2 games behind first-place New Orleans with the setback.

Las Vegas left-hander Darrin Gorski (2-1) struck out 11 Sounds batters while twirling a quality start to earn the win. The southpaw held Nashville to two runs (one earned) on five hits over his 6 1/3 frames of action.

The Sounds took a short-lived 1-0 lead in the first inning when Irving Falu (3-for-4) singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Hunter Morris.

Las Vegas responded with a pair of runs in the home half of the initial frame to grab a 2-1 advantage against spot starter Johnnie Lowe. Andrew Brown and Cory Vaughn contributed RBIs for the 51s in the inning.

51s catcher Travis d'Arnaud (3-for-5) upped the home team's lead to 5-1 in the second when he slugged a three-run homer to left off Lowe, the backstop's sixth big fly of the year.

Lowe (0-2) took the loss in his spot start for the Sounds, surrendering five runs on six hits over his three innings of action.

Brown recorded his second RBI of the night for Las Vegas in the fourth, when his two-out single off Sounds reliever Dustin Molleken brought home d'Arnaud, who had doubled.

Nashville plated its second run of the night with a two-out rally in the fifth as Logan Schafer coaxed a free pass from Gorski and later scored on a Falu single.

The visitors mounted an unsuccessful rally in the ninth, putting runners on the corners with two outs courtesy of a Hector Gomez walk and a pinch-hit single off the bat of Pete Orr. However, 51s reliever Eric Goeddel popped up Schafer to close out the contest.

The Sounds look to avoid their second consecutive series sweep in the 9:05 p.m. CT finale between the clubs on Friday evening. Right-hander Ariel Pena (4-5, 4.27) will man the bump for Nashville and face Las Vegas right-hander Giancarlo Alvarado (2-3, 6.80).

Nashville Boxscore

This is just a much different ball club without the elite pitching featured earlier in the year. To be clear I don't have a problem with Jungmann and now Cravy moving up but Fiers and Mills were simply fantastic which carried this erratic offense. Brent Leach had a nice outing going 2 scoreless innings with 5 punchouts.
