Peralta returns to Crew to face D-backs in opener

Righty away from team for family issue; McCarthy gets call for Arizona

By Caitlin Swieca / MLB.com | 6/15/2014 8:16 PM ET

After an unexpected three-day trip home to the Dominican Republic to tend to a family matter, Wily Peralta was back in the Brewers' clubhouse on Sunday and said he was ready to go for his start on Monday in the team's series opener against Arizona.

Peralta declined to specify what the family issue was, but said that his trip helped clear his mind. He completed the same throwing sessions he would normally do between starts, training with his offseason playing partners.

"I did everything down there," Peralta said. "I wasn't going to miss anything. I was going to be ready for [Monday]."

Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said Peralta had been concerned about this issue for some time. It didn't show in his start last Wednesday, when Peralta allowed one run over 6 1/3 innings against the Mets in New York.

"It's pretty tough," catcher Jonathan Lucroy said after that start. "I don't know how he did it, but he did it. It's pretty amazing, considering. He definitely did a good job. It's kind of tough because you want to enjoy the win, but knowing that, it's tough to enjoy it."

Peralta is 6-5 with a 2.90 ERA. On Monday, he'll face off against Brandon McCarthy, who has struggled this year, going 1-9 with a 5.29 ERA. He gave up five runs to the Astros over six innings in his last start June 11.

Brewers: Milwaukee grinding through tough stretch

Monday's game marks the beginning of the back end of a stretch in which the Brewers play 15 of 18 on the road. The team started the stretch on June 4 and made trips to Minnesota, Pittsburgh and New York before returning home for the weekend series against the Reds. Milwaukee will play four in Arizona and three in Colorado before the team sees Miller Park again.

Given the extensive travel, Roenicke said he felt this stretch was one of the most difficult spans of this season.

"This is an important time for us to get through, this period," Roenicke said. "If we get through it, I know there's a couple other [tough] stretches in the second half, but I think right now, especially where our bench is, I think these guys are going to get worn down."

The team is carrying eight relief pitchers and only has a four-man bench. Roenicke said he would try to give his starters days off when he could, but acknowledged the team would rely heavily on them.

D-Backs: Arroyo faces possible stint on DL

Bronson Arroyo has enjoyed a 15-year career in the Majors, with numerous highs and lows.

Now Arroyo, at age 37, is facing the possibility of landing on the disabled list for the first time in his career. In 13 starts this season, he is 6-4 with a 4.22 ERA, but has been battling elbow issues during his past few starts. The problem appears to be getting worse and Arroyo will have his elbow looked at in Phoenix on Monday.

"It's just slowly sliding downhill," he said. "I might be facing the inevitable for the first time in two decades."

Worth noting

Carlos Gomez has reached base in 30 straight games, the eighth time in franchise history a player has achieved that feat and the first since Prince Fielder in 2007.

• Ryan Braun's go-ahead home run on Saturday against the Reds made him the fourth Brewer to reach double digits in home runs. He joins Mark Reynolds, Gomez and Khris Davis. The Brewers and Blue Jays are the only teams with at least four players with 10 or more home runs.

Roof closer, no Gomez and already been harassed by the worst ushers in MLB. You'd think for a bottom feeder team that looks to draw *maybe* 19k tonight they wouldn't try to upset visiting fans by hounding them about seat locations

I went to Chase for both playoff games in 2011 - plenty of seats available for both games, as there were for the AllStar game earlier that year. That was understandable; it is not a very good place to watch a game. Roof closed and too much AC (in October) didn't help. I'm pretty sure the guy next to me the 2d game had a mental illness.

Then back to Tempe for the ASU ref-fest last September . . .

Herrera is just an awful defender. Not a very good hitter either. Why is he in the majors?

Isn't he an infielder by trade, seem to remember a diving stab at 3rd earlier this year that was pretty impressive.

Peralta an ace? Not yet anyways. Too many of these type games.

Herrera stinks. Figure something out Melvin because your depth stinks.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

He's versatile.
