2014-06-11 Brewers (Peralta) at Mets (deGrom), 6:10 PM CDT [Brewers win, 3-1]

Is it just me, or are Met fans surprisingly indifferent to Braun? Figured there would be a lot more boo birds in New York.

Mets fans have been in a comatose for a few years

They have a great stadium though...

I thought the concensus on Citi was that it's a really generic ballpark?

I went to Yankee stadium and Citi Field last August. Citi Field blew Yankee Stadium out of the water.

Yankee Stadium is as generic as can be. It was a complete disappointment.

Citi Field was great! It had a real ballpark feel to it. I could see going to a lot of games there if I were a New Yorker.

Yankee Stadium is good to see once, but nothing special. I wish I had gone to the original before it was tore down, but I missed out...

taking out peralta why?

September and October.

Because 92 pitches is so taxing for a large, strong guy like peralta? I don't agree with the use of so many bullpen arms when peralta was already pitching well

OR... because the bullpen - in aggregate - had thrown 252 pitches over the past 7 days? a whopping 36 pitches per day* (not counting bullpen and in-between-inning warm-up pitches, of course). Or selectively dating back to Lohse's gem... 356 pitches over 10 days - again, 36 pitches per day?

OR... because, of course, Ron and Doug have no idea what they're doing? And it would be nice if just someone within the organization was paying attention to bullpen usage and / or the long term.

side note... never noticed how much Wooten was being used (~20% of that 10 day load), before getting bored of the exercise. Way to go workhorse Woot.

The first couple of innings the Mets fans weren't in their seats yet. They became very vocal - and god knows how vile - as the game wore on. Why do fans vilify Braun more than other guys who tested positive?

I fully support BA in his anti greeting card pro hustle double stances.

Nice to hear some real talk on the broadcast.

I buy greeting cards but I purchase them at Dollar General where all the cards cost only a buck.

We are just trying to not score runs. Stupid send. Then a pop up with the infield in. This is almost certainly going to come back to bite us I think.

Why send him with nobody out and the middle of the order coming up??? He was out by a mile.

Yeah, because if one thing is true about this years Brewers teams, it's that they're really bad in these close games!

The Brewers have continually won games like this all year long. I don't think they've really blown many chances at scoring. They loaded them in the 1st on some really weak hits and then got some nice, timely hitting.

And Peralta was outstanding as was Segura's D behind him.

The fact that we've won a bunch of these types of games this year doesn't make it ok that we failed to execute when we had the chance to score runs. This could have been an easy win without silly baserunning and some simple offensive execution. (sac flies). Can we continue to win close games all year long? Sure, it's possible, but the more we put ourselves in, the more high stress innings our bullpen has to endure. The fact is that we left a lot of runs on the bases tonight and it very easily could have come back to bite us. It didn't, and that's great, but we still had chances to widen the lead and failed to do so.

You don't think they blew chances to score?

First inning...Bases loaded 1 out, no runs. Weak hits or not, the bases were loaded.

Fifth inning, run in already...First and third, no outs. Wind up with no more runs in the inning.

Seventh inning....Braun thrown out at the plate for the first out of an inning, then failure to score with man on third and one out again.

Those are about as big of scoring opportunities as you can ask for. We had several chances to score runs without even needing a hit and we failed to do so. Brewers were 4-15 with RISP and left 10 men on base compared to scoring just 3 runs. My main problem is sending Braun there. He was out by a mile and we ran ourselves right out of an inning. Sending him made very little sense with no outs and Gomez and Ramirez coming up.

It is maddening when we can't get a run in when we have a guy at 3rd and only one out. :tongue

They sure don't like Overbay though, for some reason.

Probably because he played for the Yanks.

Take a step back from your Brewer fandom and it's pretty easy to see why. He was an MVP so he was in the spotlight. He came out and denied it like no other guy has before. Swearing that there was no way he did that. He had guys like Rodgers backing him because of his lies, bringing more attention to it. He also threw the tester under the bus and many people out there think he ruined that guys life (which I don't believe he did). He looked like a huge jerk. That's why.

Plenty of other players have denied just as vehemently as Braun. It has to be just the tester side-story.

Man, I don't know how many have denied as hardcore as he did. He went on the attack. I don't think anyone is in this category. Not since the Steroid stuff first came out at least. I think now, everyone's approach has been, say little, say your sorry, take the suspension.

Braun:

"If I had done this intentionally, or unintentionally, I'd be the first one to step up and say 'I did it.' By no means am I perfect, but if I have ever made any mistakes in my life, I have taken responsibility for my actions...I truly believe in my heart, and would bet my life that this substance never entered my body at any point."

He then blamed others for tarnishing his name, and that he was putting the game ahead of himself:

"There were a lot of times when I wanted to come out and tell the entire story, to attack everybody as I’ve been attacked, as my name’s been dragged through the mud as everything I’ve worked for my entire life was called into question. There were a lot of times I wanted to come out, tell the entire story, but at the end of the day I recognized what’s actually best for the game of baseball and I put that ahead of what was actually best for myself."

He claimed he was fighting for others that were wrongly accused:

"I’ve always stood up for what is right. Today is about everybody who’s been wrongly accused, and everybody who’s ever had to stand up for what is actually right...I will continue to take the high road because that’s who I am, and that’s the way that I’ve lived my life. We won because the truth is on my side."

And wanted everybody to know that he was the victim:

"I am a victim of a process that completely broke down and failed the way it was applied to me in this case."

Media coverage, media coverage, media coverage and media coverage.

Approximately 8 words were written about Jhonny Peralta testing positive but about eleventy billion were written about Braun while his entire process dragged on for 18 months (the initial report in December 2011 to his suspension in July)

Braun's not passing the test in 2011 should have been kept quiet under the agreement between the players association and MLB. We should have never had known Braun failed a test until he appealed and lost. Since he won that appeal the public should have never of known about the positive test. Whoever leaked his failed test should have been fired but I doubt anything happened. These are the kinds of issues that makes me willing to give Braun a second chance. I also love to watch him play.

Off the top of my head, Miguel Tejada, Raffy Palmeiro, & Mark McGwire were all guys that I remember really denying hardcore. I may well be wrong given how much time has passed, but I really don't think Braun was a special case aside from The Collector™. Clemens took his case to court, & denied big-time iirc.

Are you suggesting this is a lot? How many pitches per game would be acceptable to you?

I guess there is just absolutely no pleasing some fans. There was one post in which someone complained, in the same paragraph about Roenicke taking Garza out and not letting him work out of his own jam, and then in the next sentance complaining about the following start(Baltimore) when RR DID try to let Garza work out of his jam and he gave up the lead.

These complete morons who aren't paying any attention to bullpen usage(despite the fact that RR talks about it regularly) have managed to use the bullpen less than all but 4 teams in the NL and are 23rd in IP by relievers in MLB.

So apparently everyone GM and Manager have no clue what they're doing...according to you.

By the way, Rob Wooten, your example of how we're overusing our BP has pitched a whole...4.2 IP in June. So it's possible you never noticed how much work he was getting...because he's really not getting that much. We have ONE reliever who's ranked in the top 30 in innings pitched. K-Rod.

We have do have 3 relievers ranked in the top 80 in appearances. K-Rod(our closer, pretty cut and dry there). Will Smith, one of the best relievers in the game, and Zack Duke, a left handed specialist.

So when you dig a little deeper, you see we're not only not overusing our BP, we're actually using them less than just about every other team out there.
