"Tonight’s interview is with Corey Rodriguez, a member of the Sounds’ parent-club Milwaukee Brewers’ scouting department. He discusses the fascinating world of baseball scouting, especially around the annual amateur draft, how the Brewers approached this year’s draft and the depth in their farm system. (Note: I also caught up with him last year when he visited Nashville after the ’13 draft. You can hear that HERE)."

Sounds Walk It Off Again Versus Reno

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds walked off against the Reno Aces for the second straight night, recording a 2-1 triumph on Tuesday evening at Greer Stadium.

Jeremy Hermida provided the game-winner for the first-place Sounds (36-30), driving home Elian Herrera with a one-out single to center in the bottom of the ninth off Aces reliever Joe Paterson. Herrera got things started in the frame with a one-out infield single then hustled to third on Hunter Morris' single to right.

The win -- the Sounds' fourth in their last five contests -- was Nashville's sixth last at-bat victory of the season, including five walkoff wins at home.

The contest began as a pitchers' duel between the Sounds' Ariel Pena and Reno's Zeke Spruill. Both starting pitchers were on their game early as the teams combined to send the minimum number of batters to the plate in the first five innings.

Ariel Pena retired his first 17 batters faced before issuing a walk to opposing pitcher Zeke Spruill with two outs in the top of the sixth inning. The run of 17 consecutive retired hitters was one shy of the best by a Sounds hurler this year (Brad Mills).

Pena, who took a no-decision despite working his third quality start of the year, struck out a season-high nine batters in the contest. He allowed one run on two hits over 6 2/3 innings of work.

Jeff Bianchi (2-for-4) broke up the scoreless deadlock in the home half of the sixth when his one-out single through the left side of the infield plated Pete Orr, who had opened the frame with a bunt single.

Nashville had Spruill on the ropes in the frame, loading the bases with one out, but failed to push another run across as the Reno right-hander retired Herrera on a flyout before fanning Morris to escape the inning with only one run crossing the plate.

Pena carried his no-hit bid into the seventh inning before Reno rallied to knot the contest at 1-1 Alfredo Marte followed an inning-opening walk to Roger Kieschnick with a single to left. After Pena induced a pair of popups, Danny Dorn floated a single to shallow left-center to bring in Kieschnick with the tying run and chase the Nashville starter from the contest.

Reno attempted to take its first lead of the night in the ninth against Dustin Molleken. With runners on first and second and two outs, Mike Freeman singled to center and Kevin Mattison came up firing, gunning down Mike Jacobs by three steps at the plate to end the inning and keep the game tied.

Molleken (2-2) picked up the win following 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for Nashville.

The teams continue the series with another 7:05 p.m. matchup on Wednesday at Greer. Brewers top prospect Jimmy Nelson (7-1, 1.51) will make the start for the Sounds and face Reno right-hander Mike Bolsinger (5-1, 2.74).

Going to the 17 inning...

I'm exhausted and this game won't end, I need to be up early so I'm pulling the plug here at midnight. MH it would be great if you could post the game story in the morning.

Wisconsin Boxscore

Barrett Astin leaves quite a few FBs up, but I couldn't see from the angle exactly why, it may be just as simple as a short stride but that's not something you can see from the CF camera... he was cruising until the 5th when his command fell apart.

Clint Terry was awesome but he only threw his FB at 86 according the broadcast crew and his change-up at 72. His FB has to have arm side run because even though he left the FB up and didn't necessarily locate well in the zone hitters consistently swung through it. It was a masterful job going 6 IP allowing just 1 hit, 1 walk, and 8 strike outs.

Harvey Martin looked good while I was watching but I was falling asleep so I had to get off the couch.

There are some very ugly hitting lines for the T-Rats in this game and they had a ton of chances to win the game but haven't gotten it done against position players for the last 4 innings. Taylor Brennan (2-6,HR,BB), Francisco Castillo (2-7,2B), Rafael Neda (2-6), Paul Eshleman (2-5,2B,BB) and Angel Ortega (2-6) have the multi-hit games thus far.

Manatees get special delivery from starting pitchers

Michael Parsons, FLORIDA TODAY

Anybody who has followed the Brevard County Manatees through the years knows the history of strong starting pitching.

From Yovani Gallardo to Manny Parra to Wily Peralta, there always seems to be one or two former Manatee starters that we see pitching for the Milwaukee Brewers.

In 2012, Jimmy Nelson, Hiram Burgos and Taylor Jungmann led the way for the Manatees. Nelson and Burgos already have made spot starts for the Brewers and Jungmann has been solid at Triple A.

This year's group has the makings of being one of the better quintets to toe the rubber at Space Coast Stadium.

Led by All-Star Tyler Wagner (photo at article link) the starting rotation is second in the Florida State League in ERA as a staff at 2.60.

Four of the five in the rotation have ERAs under 3.00 and Damien Magnifico has a 3.05 ERA after a rough start last Thursday. He will get the start tonight in Lakeland.

Wagner leads the way with at 2.09 through 13 starts this season. Hobbs Johnson has been terrific as well, sporting a 2.62 ERA through 11 starts.

Johnson and Jorge Lopez each have six wins, tops on the club. Lopez has a 3.00 ERA heading into his final start of the first half on Thursday night in Lakeland.

"Guys have been really picking us up in the first half," Brevard County manager Joe Ayrault said of the rotation.

One big addition as of late has been Austin Ross. He entered the rotation after Jed Bradley was promoted to Double A and has been dominating.

The right hander is coming back from Tommy John surgery and has been as good as new.

He has a 5-0 record with a 2.56 ERA in 13 gamesheading into tonight's start at Lakeland. As a starter, the Shreveport, La., native has given up just four runs in three starts, totaling 19 innings while striking out 17.

"He is just bouncing back," Ayrault said of Ross. "He was doing a great job in the pen and we knew he would be the guy to step in the rotation when one of our guys went up."

The pitching staff has nine shutouts in the 62 games and catcher Cameron Garfield has seen it all from close up and is proud of the numbers being put up.

"It is my job to go out and help them as much as I can," Garfield said. "Their ERA is my ERA and I take pride in that and I want them to do the best they can and reach the big leagues."

Just like Gallardo, Parra and Peralta before them.

This whole thing is really just dumb... pay the players a livable wage during the season. The system has been complete garbage for a long time, it needs to be revisited. The 3 main points being argued by MLB are at the bottom of the article.

Catching up on the amazing Timber Rattlers' 17-inning loss last night (hoping you all clicked on the links for Chris' game summary and blog entry). Anyway, there's this --

Wisconsin Bottom of the 13th

Pitching Change: Sam Roberts replaces Tyler Hollstegge.

Omar Garcia called out on strikes.

Michael Ratterree strikes out swinging.

Clint Coulter walks.

Taylor Smith-Brennan flies out to center fielder B. J. Boyd.

Wisconsin Bottom of the 15th

Johnny Davis grounds out, pitcher Sam Roberts to first baseman B. A. Vollmuth.

Omar Garcia triples (2) on a line drive to right fielder Tyler Marincov.

Michael Ratterree out on a sacrifice fly to right fielder Tyler Marincov. Omar Garcia scores.

Offensive Substitution: Pinch-hitter Jose Pena replaces Clint Coulter.

Jose Pena flies out to right fielder Tyler Marincov.

***

Coulter was the DH and had walked in his prior at-bat. Unless he was ill or strained something on the inning-ending Taylor Brennan fly-out in the 13th, not sure why'd you ever pinch-hit for him there.
