Huntsville High alumnus Jed Bradley ready to make Huntsville Stars home debut

By Jane Hammond, Huntsville Times

Jed Bradley's homecoming has been a bit delayed.

The Huntsville High graduate spent a few years in the Brewers' single A ball club in Florida after being selected as the 15th pick in the 2011 MLB Draft, waiting for a promotion up the ranks.

The left-handed pitcher began 2014 in Brevard County, compiling a 5-2 record in 10 starts with a 2.98 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 60.1 innings. He got the call to move up to double-A in late May, making a shaky debut in Jackson as the Generals beat the Stars 9-6.

Sunday should be different, as Bradley is set to be the second Huntsville native, after Hunter Morris in 2012 and 2013, to play for the Stars at home.

"I've been waiting on this a long time," Bradley said. "I'm just excited about time with the family, and to just try to help the Stars win a Southern League title."

The 24-year-old was born in Huntsville but moved around during his childhood. His senior year found him moving back to the Tennessee Valley, where he briefly pitched for the Panthers before being derailed by an appendectomy.

An almost chance encounter with Georgia Tech led to signing with the Yellow Jackets, and a few years later he joined the Brewers organization.

Staying healthy has been somewhat of an issue, with a shoulder injury delaying a potential Stars homecoming in 2013.

But now, the 6-foot-4 Bradley says he's ready to go.

"I try to stay as positive as possible," he said. "You can't really let things like that get you off your game or derail you. It's definitely a mental battle to go through something like that. ... Now I feel great."

His fastball is his forte, with a curveball and slider also in his repertoire. His goal while in Huntsville is to just continue to improve pitch command, even with the added pressure of pitching in front of family, friends and high school coaches.

Stars pitching coach Chris Hook isn't worried.

"Sometimes you try to do too much in front of family and friends," Hook said. "It's not easy, but it depends on the person. (Bradley's) laid back, and I think he'll be able to handle it fine. Obviously it'll be a nice thing for Huntsville to have a Huntsville guy in their last year."

Bradley, too, thinks the potential hollering during his 4 p.m. start could be good thing. It certainly doesn't hurt that, no matter how the game goes, he'll drive home and sleep in his own bed.

"There's dinner when I go home, so I think that's one of the things that guys miss the most about the season," Bradley said. "It's just a blessing to kind of have the best of both worlds."

That's unfortunate the Stars got suspended like that, there was an absolute duel between starters Tyler Cravy 5IP 2 Hits 5K & Mobile starter Michael Lee 4IP 1 hit 1K against the two best teams in the league. They should start building minor league stadiums with rooftops.

Brevard's game was suspended due to rain with the game tied 1-1 on a Nathan Orf home run. It will only be continued if it has playoff implications for Bradenton.

Ninety-one professional games, and Orf's first home run (in possible game 92) will only count if the game is continued. That's one for the books. The Lopez-Glasnow duel was also shaping up as a great game through four innings that we've been robbed of seeing played out (partial box).

Hermida Powers Sounds To 4-3 Win In Memphis

Nashville Survives Late Scare To Defeat Cross-State Rivals For Second Night In A Row

Nashville Sounds

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Right fielder Jeremy Hermida homered and drove in three runs to lead the Nashville Sounds to a 4-3 victory over the cross-state rival Memphis Redbirds on Saturday evening at AutoZone Park.

The Sounds (34-29) held a 4-1 lead heading to the bottom of the ninth and survived a scare from the Redbirds, who plated a pair and had the bases loaded with two outs before Dustin Molleken fanned Greg Garcia to slam the door and secure the one-run victory.

Catcher Matt Pagnozzi (2-for-4) also homered for Nashville as the Sounds won their second straight game against the division-rival Redbirds.

Kyle Heckathorn turned in a solid spot start for the Sounds after scheduled pitcher Mike Fiers was held out of duty and later called up by the Brewers. Heckathorn worked four scoreless frames, allowing only one hit.

Pagnozzi (2-for-4) put the visitors on the board when he belted a one-out solo homer to left off Memphis starter John Gast. The roundtripper was the backstop's fourth of the year.

Memphis knotted the contest at 1-1 in the sixth against Sounds reliever Jeremy Jeffress. Mike O'Neill singled with one out, moved to second on a groundout, and scored the tying run on Greg Garcia's two-out RBI single to center.

Nashville pulled right back ahead in the next half-inning when Hermida connected for a two-run big fly to straightaway center off Redbirds reliever Nick Greenwood. Pagnozzi, who preceded the outfielder with a single, scored his second run of the night on the tater, which gave the Sounds a 3-1 lead.

Hermida added an insurance run for the Sounds in the ninth when he plated Caleb Gindl, who had doubled, with an RBI single to stretch the advantage to 4-1.

Closer Donovan Hand, who inherited and stranded a pair of baserunners in the bottom of the eighth inning, couldn't close out the game for Nashville in the ninth as Memphis mounted a rally.

After the right-hander retired the first two batters of the frame, the next five Redbirds hitters reached base against Hand, resulting in a pair of runs to reduce the Nashville lead to 4-3.

Luis Mateo singled and Pete Kozma drew a walk before O'Neill laced an RBI single to right. Audry Perez followed with a grounder to short, where Jeff Bianchi's flip to second was wide of the bag to allow Kozma on the play, which was curiously ruled an infield single. After Jermaine Curtis drew a walk to load the bases, Sounds skipper Rick Sweet summoned Molleken from the bullpen and the hard-throwing right-hander fanned Garcia to leave the bags full of Redbirds as he recorded his second save of the year.

Jeffress (2-1) was awarded the victory for Nashville despite suffering a blown save in the contest. He allowed one run in his two innings of work.

The teams wrap up their four-game series with a 1:35 p.m. finale on Sunday afternoon. Right-hander Taylor Jungmann (2-1, 2.93) will man the bump for the Sounds to face Memphis right-hander Angel Castro (5-3, 3.16).

Nashville Boxscore

The Sounds had to use 6 pitchers in a 9 inning game, that's not something you see very often. Kyle Heckathorn singled in his only AB and put up his best effort of the season.

Final: Mobile 4, @Huntsville 2, eight innings (scheduled for seven), completion of Friday's suspended game

Stars Fall In Extra Innings

Steve Jarnicki, Huntsville Stars

The Mobile BayBears defeated the Huntsville Stars 4-2 in extra innings Saturday night which completed a suspended game from the night before.

Saturday's game resumed in the bottom of the fifth after rain had forced the game to stop Friday night.

The game was scheduled for seven innings as part of a doubleheader. With the game scoreless in the sixth, Mobile got a leadoff single from Tom Belza. The next batter, Jake Lamb, then crushed a two-run homer to right field against RHP Jose De La Torre giving the BayBears a 2-0 lead.

The Stars rallied in their sixth inning against Mobile closer Jake Barrett (1-2). With two on and two out, Nick Ramirez laced a two-run double to left centerfield scoring Kentrail Davis and Josh Prince. Ramirez's twelfth double of the year tied the game at 2-2.

The game went into extra innings with the game tied at 2-2 after neither team could score in the seventh.

In the top of the eighth inning the Stars had their closer David Goforth (2-3) on the mound. After he struck Belza out to begin the inning, the BayBears got back to back singles from Lamb and Dustin Martin.

With runners on the corners and with one out, Goforth struck out Jon Griffin.

The BayBears then brought in a pinch hitter for the pitcher's spot. Raywilly Gomez lined a two-run single off a diving Mitch Haniger's glove in right field which scored a pair of runs. Gomez's two-run single gave the BayBears a 4-2 lead.

Caleb Fleck earned his second save of the year for Mobile in the bottom of the eighth. With the tying runner at the plate, he struck out Ramirez to end the game.

Barrett collected the win for the BayBears who improve to 36-24. Goforth suffered the loss out of the Stars bullpen who are now 40-21.

The BayBears and Stars were attempting to play the second game of their doubleheader after game one, however a heavy downpour forced game two to be postponed until Sunday.

The BayBears lead the Stars 1-0 in their five game series. The series will resume Sunday with another doubleheader. In game one, RHP Drew Gagnon (4-2, 2.50) will get the ball for Huntsville. Mobile will have RHP Bradin Hagens (4-2, 2.89) on the hill. Sunday's doubleheader can be heard starting at 1:45 CDT on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM WTKI and online at http://www.wtkiradio.com.
