Notes from Steve in Huntsville --

The two home runs Mitch Haniger hit yesterday marked the first time in his three-year professional career that he had a multiple home run game. It also were his first two road home runs hit this year after hitting his first four of the year at home. It was quite the series for Haniger, who in game one of the series in Jackson had a career high four hits. In the series he finished 8-21 (.381) with 2 home runs and 6 RBI. In general, his bat is heating up with at least one hit in 12 out of his past 16 games. In his last 16 games, he’s batting .344 (22-64)…

Stars reliever Tanner Poppe (pronounced: Papi) pitched two scoreless innings. With the bases loaded and one out and the Stars ahead by two, he struck out the final two hitters. Since making his Double-A debut on May 22nd, Poppe has allowed just one run which came in his first appearance (5/22), a home run. Since he has tossed 6.2 scoreless innings out of the Stars bullpen…

Jason Rogers extended his hit streak to five straight with an RBI single in the 3rd inning. During the streak he’s(7-23, .304) with a home run and 3 RBI. Since the start of May until now Rogers has the 6th most home runs in the league with four and tied for the 5th most RBI with 22…Nick Ramirez recorded his 5th triple of the season. Before this season, Ramirez just had three triples total in his first 289 career games as a pro. All three were last year at High-A Brevard County. His five triples are now tied for 2nd most in the Southern League…Josh Prince had an RBI single Wednesday. Since May 1st, Prince is batting .305 with 4 HR and 11 RBI in 29 games after batting .183 in April.

Big sixth inning gets Rattlers their third straight win

Wisconsin beats Cedar Rapids 7-4 to stay in pennant chase

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers are heading into the stretch of the first half of the Midwest League schedule on a three-game winning streak. Wisconsin beat the Cedar Rapids Kernels 7-4 on Thursday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Michael Ratterree homered and Angel Ortega had a pair of key RBI to spark the Rattlers to the win.

Wisconsin (28-31) took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Francisco Castillo was at second and Paul Eshleman was at first. Ortega singled to right with two outs and Castillo was heading for the plate. The throw by Ryan Christensen was in time to get Castillo, but catcher Michael Quesada could not handle the throw. Castillo snuck around Christensen and scored the first run of the game.

Cedar Rapids (27-33) loaded the bases in the top of the third inning on singles by Bo Altobelli, Ryan Walker, and Engelb Vielma against Wisconsin starter Clint Terry. Christensen was up with one out and sent a flyball to right that was deep enough to score Altobelli from third. Walker tagged and headed for third and the throw came into Ortega as the cutoff man. Vielma tagged and took off for second and the Wisconsin shortstop thought he had tagged Vielma befor Altobelli scored. However, Vielma was ruled safe and the tying run counted. Plus, the Kernels had runners at second and third with two outs.

The next pitch from Terry was wild and that let Walker score to give the Kernels a 2-1 lead.

The Timber Rattlers trailed 2-1 until there were two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Kernels starting pitcher Fernando Romero hadn't allowed a Rattler past second base since the second inning and retired eight of the ten batters he faced after the RBI single by Ortega. Ratterree sent a line drive to deep center, but it looked like centerfielder Jonathan Murphy would make a spectacular catch for the final out. Murphy raced back to the eight-foot high fence just to the right of the batter's eye, leapt, and…had the ball deflect off his glove and into the Kernels bullpen for a game-tying home run.

The homer was the eleventh of the season for Ratterree. That ties Ratterree with teammate Clint Coulter for the Midwest League lead in home runs.

Wisconsin busted the game open in the bottom of the sixth inning and it was the bottom part of the order that got the rally started against reliever Josue Montanez. Castillo was hit by a pitch with one out. Eshleman and Steve Halcomb both walked to load the bases. Ortega's infield single to the hole at short knocked Castillo home with the go-ahead run. Johnny Davis was next and he chopped a single over the head of the third baseman to drive in both Eshleman and Halcomb for a 5-2 lead. Montanez balked to get Ortega home. Then, Omar Garcia singled to right to and Davis raced home with the final run of the inning for a 7-2 lead.

Tyler Spurlin tossed a scoreless fifth to pick up the win. It was the first game for Spurlin since the second game of a doubleheader on April 30.

Barrett Astin pitched the final three innings and he earned his first professional save, despite allowing a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning.

The Timber Rattlers have won three straight games to claw their way back to the periphery of the first half Western Division Wild Card race. Wisconsin is three games under .500, but they trail the Peoria Chiefs, the current Wild Card leader in the West, by three games with ten games remaining in the half. However, the road to a playoff spot is difficult for the Rattlers. They do not play Peoria in any of the remaining games this half and there are currently three other teams between Wisconsin and the Chiefs. The Rattlers would have to climb over Clinton, Quad Cities, Burlington, and Peoria in the last ten days of the half to claim the Wild Card.

The final game of the series is Friday night. Zach Quintana (04, 6.09) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Ryan Eades (3-6, 5.66) is set to start for the Kernels. Game time is 7:05pm.

There will be a couple of special guests at the game on this North Shore Bank Family night with Y100. The Amazing Spider-Man and Captain America will be on hand to meet fans. The first 500 children ages 12 and under to attend this game will receive their very own superhero cape. All children 12 and under receive a free hot dog and soda as part of North Shore Bank Family night. There will be a postgame fireworks display. Kids 14 and under may participate in Kids Run the Bases thanks to Molina Healthcare after the fireworks.

If you can't make it out to the ballpark, there are several ways to catch the action. MyNEW 32's Sports Showdown will have the television broadcast starting at 7:00pm. The radio broadcast may be heard on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:45pm. The game is also available to those who subscribe to MiLB.TV.

HOME RUN:

Michael Ratterree (11th, 0 on in 5th inning off Fernando Romero, 2 out)

WP: Tyler Spurlin (1-0)

LP: Josue Montanez (1-4)

SAVE: Barrett Astin (1)

TIME: 2:31

ATTN: 3,702

Wisconsin Boxscore

Clint Terry with a nice debut, I'll be curious to see what he looks like on TV or in person at some point. Barrett Astin bounced back from his May 30th debacle with a decent outing, his best outings were back to back on May 14th and 20th but he hasn't been all that sharp since.

Mehring's call of Michael Ratterree's gifted HR was pretty good live, if you don't regularly take the time please hit up the Rattler Radio blog post game with the highlight video when MH links it tomorrow as it is not up yet.

The T-Rats pounded out 10 hits with Johnny Davis (2-4), Ratterree (2-3,BB), and Angel Ortega (2-4) posting the multi-hit games.

Sounds Drop Opener in Memphis, 7-4

Nashville's Hector Gomez Belts Two Homers in Loss; Leon Debuts

Nashville Sounds

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Despite a pair of home runs from Sounds shortstop Hector Gomez, the first-place Nashville Sounds (32-29) dropped their series opener against the Memphis Redbirds on Thursday night at AutoZone Park by a 7-4 final margin.

Trailing 3-0, Nashville leveled the game in the top of the fifth with a pair of two-out extra-base knocks, but Memphis followed with three runs of their own in the inning, which proved to be the difference.

Sounds catcher Robinzon Diaz started off with a single and moved into scoring position via Ariel Pena's sac-bunt, before third baseman Jeff Bianchi hit a double to right field to put Nashville on the board by scoring Diaz.

Shortstop Hector Gomez cleared the bases and tied the game with a home run over the left-field wall. The shot was Gomez's sixth of the season and his first of two on the night.

In the home half of the inning, Sounds starting pitcher Pena (4-5) offered up three consecutive walks to load the bases for Memphis with no outs. Reliever Michael Blazek entered, but the Redbirds plated one on a groundout and two more on Stephen Piscotty's two-run single.

Pena took the loss, his fifth, allowing six runs, five earned, on three hits and six walks over four innings of work. The right-hander failed to qualify for the quality start, snapping the regular rotation's streak of eight consecutive QS outings.

Redbirds starter Zach Petrick (3-3) earned the win by holding the Sounds to three runs on four hits over 5 1/3 innings. It is his third win of the year.

Gomez, 2-for-3, connected for his second home run in the seventh inning to pull Nashville within two runs. It is only the second time this season a Sounds batter has recorded a multiple homers in a single game.

The Redbirds took the initial lead in the first inning courtesy of Bianchi's throwing error. A two-run homer from third baseman Scott Moore in the third inning made it a 3-0 game for Memphis.

Relievers Michael Blazek, Brent Leach, Jeremy Jeffress and newcomer Arcenio Leon each saw work out of the Nashville bullpen.

Blazek logged 1 2/3 scoreless innings before Leach entered with the bases loaded in the sixth to record the final out without even throwing a pitch. The lefty used his effective pickoff move to catch Ed Easley in a rundown that had Hunter Morris throw home to out the lead runner.

In his Sounds debut, Leon faced six batters in a 30-pitch eighth inning, allowing Memphis its final run on Shane Robinson's RBI single.

The Sounds will play game two against the Memphis Redbirds on Friday night at 7:05. Brewers lefty Tom Gorzelanny (0-0, 1.59) will make a rehab start for Nashville and will be followed by Sounds starter and PCL-ERA leader Jimmy Nelson (6-1, 1.64) Memphis sends RHP Scott McGregor (1-5, 6.66). Broadcaster Jeff Hem has the call on 102.5 The Game.

Nashville Boxscore

I really hate losing to Cardinal affiliates, especially since Memphis no longer has Grichuk or Taveras. Ariel Pena has never been able to really put it all together for an extended stretch which is disappointing on many levels, maybe he'll end up a good BP option. Meanwhile Jeremy Jeffress has put together a run of 7 scoreless appearances.

As a team the Sounds had just 5 hits on the evening, Hunter Morris (1-3,BB) was the only prospect to do anything of note.

Final: Bradenton 7, Brevard County 10

'Tees rally twice to topple Marauders, 10-7

Rivera and Arcia both go 4-for-4 as Brevard racks up 18 hits

By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. - Despite trailing 5-1 and 7-4 at different points in the ballgame, the Brevard County Manatees rallied to score the game's final six runs to defeat the Bradenton Marauders, 10-7 on Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium.

Tied at seven in the bottom of the seventh inning, Cameron Garfield led off the frame with a single to center. With Victor Roache at the plate, Garfield swiped second base for his second steal of the year. After Roache struck out, Garfield advanced to third on a ground out by Mike Garza. That brought Yadiel Rivera - who had three base-hits already - to the plate with two outs.

On a 1-0 pitch from Marauders' reliever Ryan Hafner, Rivera hit a high chop towards Bradenton (30-30) third baseman Eric Wood. Charging on the play, Wood fielded and fired low to first. The throw skipped past first baseman Walker Gourley and went all the way to the wall. Garfield scored easily as Rivera motored into second with a single and an error to give the 'Tees their first lead of the night, 8-7. Nathan Orf followed with a single to center to score Rivera from second base to extend the Manatees' lead to 9-7.

Brevard County (31-28) tacked on an insurance run off Jeff Inman, who was making his 2014 debut after being activated from the disabled list at Double-A Altoona earlier in the day, in eighth. Nicky Delmonico slapped an RBI single to right field to make it 10-7.

Mark Williams, making his fourth appearance since being added to the Manatees roster from Class-A Wisconsin, came in to close out the game in the top of the ninth. The right-hander worked around a one-out double to pick up his third save of the year. The victory marked Brevard County's eighth come-from-behind win of the season.

Damien Magnifico (3-4, 3.05 ERA) struggled out of the gate and suffered his worst start of the season. After posting an incredible month of May, recording a 1.57 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP in 34.1 innings, the right-hander issued a season-high seven runs and tied a season-high with seven hits allowed in 4.2 innings, in his first June start.

The first three batters for the Marauders reached to spark the first inning rally. After a walk to Adam Frazier and an error by Rivera at second base that allowed Gourley to reach base safely, Josh Bell drilled his first of five hits into left field for an RBI single to put Bradenton up 1-0. After a ground out by Jonathan Schwind, Max Moroff grounded a two-run double to right to extend the early lead to three.

However after every Bradenton threat, the 'Tees came back with a rally of its own. With two outs in the first, Michael Reed came through with his first base-hit since being activated from the disabled list to score Orlando Arcia and cut the lead to 3-1.

The back-and-forth affair continued with the Marauders scoring two runs in the second. With a runner on third and one out, Frazier slapped a run-scoring single to left to make it 4-1, Bradenton. After a Gourley single, Bell came through with another RBI single to extend the lead to four.

Brevard rallied back once again to score the game's next three runs. After an RBI single by Arcia in the second cut the lead to 5-2, the 'Tees added two more in the fourth. With two outs and no one on, Rivera blooped a single to shallow right field. However, Rivera took too wide of a turn at first and was caught off the bag. After receiving the throw from the right fielder Schwind, Bradenton starting pitcher, Orlando Castro (3-3, 3.26), threw to second base to try and get Rivera. The throw from Castro was wide and went sailing into left field. Rivera never stopped until he crossed home plate to cut the lead to two.

The Manatees were not done as Orf followed with a double to left. Arcia - already with two hits to his name - lined another base-hit to center to score Orf to trim the Marauders' lead to one. However, Arcia was tagged out trying to advance to second on the throw to the cutoff man.

Both teams would put up two spots in the fifth. Bradenton extended their lead to 7-4 on a two-run double by Jacob Stallings, while the Manatees countered in the bottom of the frame with RBI singles by Garfield and Roache to cut the deficit back to one.

It was in the sixth when the Manatees finally tied the game. Brevard loaded the bases on a single by Rivera and then back-to-back walks to Orf and Arcia. Tyrone Taylor followed with a sacrifice fly to left to knot the game up at seven. That was all the Manatees would get as Orf was cut down at home on a fielder's choice by Reed and Delmonico grounded out to second to end the threat.

Much like his Brevard counterpart, Castro battled through his worst start of the season. The Marauders' lefty - who was named to the Florida State League South All-Star team on Tuesday - surrendered a season-high 12 hits and six runs (five earned) over 4.2 innings of work.

Manatees' reliever Stephen Peterson picked up his first win of the year in relief. The left-hander did not allow a run on two hits in two innings of work.

Hafner took his second loss of the year in relief for the Marauders. The right-hander surrendered three runs on four hits and two walks in 2.1 innings.

Brevard finished the night with a staggering 18 hits. Eight of the nine players in the lineup recorded at least one base-hit, while five of those eight - Arcia, Rivera, Orf, Delmonico and Garfield - all recorded multi-hit games.

The 'Tees will look to take the series against the Marauders tomorrow night at Space Coast Stadium, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Right-hander Chad Pierce (1-2, 4.15) will make a spot-start for Brevard. Fellow righty, Jason Creasy (3-2, 3.79), will get the start for Bradenton.

First of all, we see great write-ups in the game summaries all the time, often impeccable, actually. We've enjoyed such from Nashville staff and Chris in Wisconsin for years. The Brevard County write-up today was as well done as you're going to see, awesome.

Kudos to Manatees ownership for establishing a fantastic online presence, after years of absolute nothingness. What a bonus for Brewer fans, great job, guys.

Catching up from Wednesday:

VIDEO, including a bit of game action: Andrew Luftglass of the Manatees Radio Network chats with RHP Austin Ross after Ross struck out a season-high eight men.

As they tend to do in the rare videos they provide, the guys take part in a bit of hijinks behind the scenes.
