2014 Draft Pick Discussion, Rounds 1-5

Good thing we drafted Taylor Jungmann (BA #8) in 2011 rather than "reaching" for Jose Fernandez (BA #20).

I'd say a high school kid who can hit 97 and has one of the best breaking pitches in the draft is an OK pick at 12...

Fernandez would not have signed with the Brewers if they drafted him. It was the Marlins or nobody in the MLB Draft that year.

I think this is a little bit of a reach here but if the Brewers can get a discount on the pick it should be a very good pick.

I think the Brewers go with a bat with their next pick.

I wanted Newcomb, I prefer college arms as they are less of a risk, but obviously Seid goes more for High School arms. I think Newcomb will be the first player up from this class.

When you don't have a great farm system, the best way to improve it is to get players that can progress through the farm system quickly, picking a kid who just turned 18 is not that.

Hmmm, how does Jungmann sound to you?

(Sure, Jungmann can be a major leaguer, but doesn't have the highest ceiling)

Meh. Wait and see. I prefer position players in the first round but it seems like this guy has a high ceiling at least.

Newcomb is not Jungmann... I hated the Jungmann pick but I wanted to draft Newcomb.

I know, but just because a guy is thought to move through a farm system quickly doesn't mean that he'll be a farm-system savior.

Ahh my bad, I get what you are saying now, sorry.

Well Holmes is gone at 22nd pick. 19picks to 41 And now, you don't see falling in the draft currently.

Next 5 on the board are Foley@18 Hill@20 Chavis@21 Gatewood@22 and Harrison@23

For the Kodi pick to work out the Crew need to get a top 27 on the board player. There's 8 left that qualify and 19 picks to go.

Brewers didn't pick Medeiros because they were trying to save money for #41, at least not that we know of. Whatever happens with the next two picks is irrelevant.

Way too much certainty in an uncertain process for some of the statements on the board tonight. Given the observed, documented, stone cold, every single year variation in scouting opinions on players past the top couple there is relatively little meaning in saying a 'top 27' player.

Wow the Pirates really surprised me there with Tucker. The way things are looking all of the HS bats I was interested in will be there at #41, don't want to get my hopes up though.

To them it may have been Kodi was top 10-15 on their board. He was ranked around 25-30th end of 1st rd in rankings. I'm going to guess there was a talk about what he'd sign for and it had to be below the #12 slot value. There's no way with who was available the Brewers selected Kodi to sign at 2.8mil. Like I said in his ranking area that projects at 1.8mil. How could Milw not go to Kodi say hey we like you would like 2mil to go 12th to us or take your chances with the rest of the teams in the draft? 2mil tied to having to go 21st. This when he's considered 25-30 in rankings. The Brewers will sign him below slot. Trust me.

Rankings are irrelevant. Teams negotiate under-slot deals because they work out a deal with players before picking them way above where they would otherwise go. Medeiros was talking to Arizona at #16, Kansas City at #17, and Cleveland at #21. Maybe he will sign a little underslot in the end, I don't know, but there's no reason to think that there is a deal in place or that he's going to take an insulting offer (especially as a high school player).

I'm really excited to be back here with all you dudes. It looks like you all have done your homework. I haven't been in here since a few goofballs called me an idiot for being critical of the Jed Bradley selection. I predict the Brewers do well tonight, they seem connected to the right players.

I miss your Packer draft recaps.

So let's face it now. Luis Ortiz will land with StL. And turn in to a complete Adam Wainwright clone.

When I heard Selig say "Lu..." I thought you were going to be right. I am glad Ortiz didn't go to the Cardinals.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

There goes Chavis.

16 value is 467k below 12

17 value is 605k below 12

21 is almost 800 k below 12.

Would you as Kodi really say no to 2mil or 2.1mil gambling that the draft works to where you get selected better than 21 in order to even command 2mil+? There's only 8 teams to select you in that scenario and again he's ranked 25-30. Not 15-25 where he can figure he's guaranteed 1.8-2.1mil

Cards Select Weaver! Yes. I'm not impressed as said earlier this is a pick by them I think won't pan out! Not Luis Ortiz!

Luke Weaver to the Cards. Watch them turn him into a harder throwing Jered Weaver.

Haha he said in predraft he compares himself to Jered Weaver/wants to model his pitching after him. Then said he'd love for them to be bruhs when asked if they were related and the answer was no.

Who is on your wish list at #41? Gatewood would a great get, but its probably wishful thinking.

Ohh I have a ton of guys both pitchers and hitters... I like Jack Flaherty who could be either a pitcher or position player, Ti'quan Forbes who is a tweener SS right now, Marcus Wilson is a bit intriguing as a boom or bust OF, as is Michael Gettys, Luis Ortiz is a RHP legit upside and already has a plus pitch, Foster Griffin is a LHP and would be a dream pick if he fell that far by some random act of god... just off the top of my head. There are some very interesting college players as well.

Sorry for the slow response, listening to the T-Rats, dropping in on the Brewers, and doing draft stuff at the same time.
