2014 Draft Pick Discussion, Rounds 1-5

I just noticed that Newcomb didn't sign yet. Holmes signed for $2.5 mil, the exact same bonus as Medeiros, selecting him wouldn't have impacted Gatewood or Harrison.

Obviously I'll be watching the trio of Medeiros, Holmes, and Newcomb to see who turns out to be the better player. At this point I'd obviously rather be wrong and have Medeiros turn out the best since I never gave him any consideration because of his low arm slot but was super high on the other 2.

I didn't realize Grant Holmes signed for the same bonus as Medeiros, but I would guess he might have held out for a little more if he had been taken at 12 (instead of 22). Holmes was the guy I was really excited about as a possibility when the Brewers pick came up and he will certainly be a guy I follow as he progresses through the ranks of professional ball, but like you mentioned I am rooting for Medeiros to evolve into the talented LHP the organization envisions him becoming.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Monte Harrison is putting up some positive numbers thus far. 16SBs-1CS 20BBs/27Ks in 108PAs Though many of his hits are singles thus far with all those walks so I can understand why his SB numbers are up there in 25games.

Gatewood at .167/.212/.219 in 24 games.... :/ 39ks in 102PAs

Medeiros numbers aren't great but I'm not going to put too much on his numbers this year. Stuff/velocity is what's important early figure he'll improve on location as time goes by...

It's entirely possible that he wouldn't have agreed to sign for 2.5 had he been taken by the Brewers at 12.

The Brewers obviously do a very thorough job of ensuring their guys are going to sign. We seldom lose out on signing a pick.

AS for Medeiros, isn't his arm slot compared favorably to Sale's?

Probably not worth reading anything into any of those stats for various reasons. First being the sample size, second being the unknown level of competition.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

It's funny how MLB.com listed Draft rankings on tools and then with their mid-season update of the Rankings they adjust them?

All three selections were Draft rank overall at 55.

Now all three reduced to overall rank of 50.

In Medeiros/Gatewood's case it came due to tool ranks being changed lower so I get it.

Medeiros lost 5 on both his FB/Changeup ranks 60-55, 55-50

Gatewood lost 5 on his Power

Harrison meanwhile maintained his tool ranks of his draft but still was reduced 5 in his Overall.

I guess overall looking at some names we had chimed in for as potential Brewer picks they all tend to lose 5 on their overall.

Anyway, interesting how Medeiros lost 5 for his FB when the reports pretty much were how he had thrown for higher velocity leading up to the draft?

And how do you reduce Gatewoods Power? He's 18 and still growing. Wonder if any of these 3 will ever crack the top 100
