Via the 'free' portion of Baseball Prospectus' Minor League Report today --

Orlando Arcia, SS/2B, Brewers (Brevard County, A+): 4-5, 2 R, 2B, HR. Mostly known for his glove, Arcia hit his first home run of the year in a rare display of power. He does a nice job of working counts and draws his share of walks, so that paired with a good glove means it won’t take much power for him to be a productive player. That said, he’ll have to develop more than he’s shown in games thus far to be a regular, and his small-ball approach to hitting won’t allow for a lot of growth in that department.

Final: Huntsville 7, @Jackson 5

HANIGER POWERS STARS TO VICTORY

Steve Jarnicki, Huntsville Stars

Jackson, TN - Huntsville Stars RF Mitch Haniger hit a pair of long home runs Wednesday, including what turned out to be the game winner, as the Stars beat the Jackson Generals 7-5 at The Ballpark at Jackson.

The Stars were trailing 5-4 in the fifth inning. Jackson starter Trevor Miller (4-6) walked a pair of runners and was taken out of the game before Haniger came to the plate. LHP Cam Hobson entered with two on base and with two outs.

Haniger then lined a pitch over the left field wall which is twenty four feet in height. The only question was if the ball would stay fair or go foul. It stayed fair for a three-run home run and Haniger had his first multiple home run game of the year. Haniger’s sixth homer of the year gave the Stars a 7-5 lead.

The Stars built an early lead in the second. Haniger blasted a solo shot to left field giving the Stars a 1-0 lead.

In the third inning, Shea Vucinich reached on a two-base error by third baseman Patrick Kivlehan. Two batters later, Josh Prince lined an RBI single to left field scoring Vucinich. The Stars made it 3-0 after Nick Ramirez’s RBI triple and Jason Rogers also singled into left field scoring Ramirez. All three runs came in succession for the Stars who took a 4-0 lead.

The Generals responded with a five-run third inning against starter Andy Moye (2-0). Jack Marder lined a two-run double over D’Vontrey Richardson’s head in centerfield. Dan Paolini added an RBI single cutting the deficit to 4-3. The Generals then grabbed their only lead when Dario Pizzano launched a two-run homer to right field giving Jackson a 5-4 lead.

Moye, who earned the win, went five innings, allowing five runs on eight hits.

Tanner Poppe and David Goforth combined for four scoreless innings out of the Stars bullpen to nail down the victory.

Goforth, earned his 13th save of the season as he left the tying runners on base in the ninth.

The Generals (25-34) took three out of five from the Stars (40-20) who ended their three-game losing streak with the win.

The Stars will return to Huntsville to begin a ten game homestand starting Thursday night against the Mobile BayBears, the Double-A Affiliate of the Arizona Diamonbacks. RHP Tyler Cravy (8-1, 1.76) will start for the Stars. Mobile will send RHP Mike Lee (3-3, 4.43) to the mound. Thursday’s game can be heard starting at 6:15 CDT on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM WTKI and wtkiradio.com.

Huntsville Box Score

Just tremendous to see Mitch Haniger absolutely rake the last two weeks. The .631 OPS vs. RH pitchers is still a bit scary, watch for that to continue to rise. Twenty-six of Nick Ramirez' 61 hits have been for extra bases, tripled here, and he's having a very, very solid AA season. Ho hum, Shawn Zarraga raised his OBP to .459.

Huntsville Game Log

RHP Tanner Poppe, the 31st round find, hadn't even been drafted at this time last year. Now he's in AA and not blinking an eye in his first six Huntsville appearances. Go Jayhawk, Latroy Hawkins would be proud of the Kansas product. Poppe turns 24 in July, but his arc is incredibly impressive (see below).

Brewers' Haniger homers twice in Stars' win

Huntsville center fielder goes 3-for-4, plates four in comeback victory

By Danny Wild / MiLB.com

Mitch Haniger may be a middle of the lineup power threat for first-place Huntsville, but back in March, the outfielder was an afterthought at the end of the dugout bench.

"I got maybe two at-bats a game, so every time I got to the plate, I cherished every pitch," he said. "I didn't take anything for granted."

The Brewers outfielder got a taste of his dream in 10 Major League Spring Training games, where he was used as a pinch-hitter. He's taken the same mentality into the daily grind of his second full Minor League season.

"It just helps your focus level; when you get one at-bat a game or every couple days, your focus level is at all-time high," he said. "I've learned to bring that into every single at-bat and take the same approach into a full year."

Haniger showed off the results of that mindset, going 3-for-4 with a pair of homers, including a go-ahead three-run drive in the fifth inning, and four RBIs to help the Huntsville Stars past Jackson, 7-5, on Wednesday afternoon. The breakout game comes a day after eight of Haniger's teammates were voted to the Southern League All-Star Game and two days after he and the Double-A Stars clinched their division.

"It was good -- we've been scuffling a little bit the past few games," said Haniger. "We haven't been hitting as well as we should and we haven't been pitching as well as we've been, so it was good to get back and get a win. We came out swinging today."

Haniger and the Stars, in the team's final season before relocating to Mississippi, clinched the Southern League's first-half North Division crown June 2 thanks to a loss by Tennessee. Wednesday's victory moved the Stars to 20 games over .500 at 40-20 this year and also snapped a three-game losing streak.

"It's been good, baseball is fun, especially when you're winning a lot," he said. "We want to be looser at the plate and on the mound, we've been having a fun year so far, we've got a lot of good players in our clubhouse."

Haniger, the Brewers' No. 5 prospect, hit a solo shot in the second inning off Jackson starter Trevor Miller to give Huntsville a 1-0 lead. After the Generals rallied for five runs in the bottom of the third, Haniger capped Huntsville's response in the fifth on a go-ahead three-run drive to left, moments after Cam Hobson came in to relieve Miller (4-6).

"[it was a] 3-2 slider, just got out in front a little bit, I hit it to left, hit it pretty good," he said of the first home run.

Huntsville's bullpen then did the rest, with Tanner Poppe and David Goforth combining for four scoreless innings after starter Andy Moye (2-0) was charged with five runs on eight hits over five innings. Goforth struck out two for his 13th save.

"It was good -- [Moye] gave up a few runs, but he still pitched pretty good. He kept us in the game, and that's what we needed," Haniger said. "I was looking for a fastball, and it was a fastball middle-in, hit it well. It put us up by two I believe."

Haniger, the Brewers' supplemental first-round pick in 2012 following the loss of Prince Fielder, saw action in 10 Spring Training games earlier this year, hitting .500 with a pair of homers and seven RBIs in 16 at-bats for the Brewers. He faces a challenge of reaching Milwaukee with center and right fields currently occupied by Carlos Gomez and Ryan Braun, though. With just one full season in the Minors under his belt, he was one of three non-roster outfielders who received invitations to big league camp, joining Kentrail Davis and Kevin Mattison.

He's transitioned from that atmosphere, of being a 23-year-old prospect surrounded by veterans, to one of the leaders on a Stars roster full of young All-Stars.

"It was awesome, I just learned to cherish every pitch I have at the plate," he said. "It's been the same here. We have a really loose clubhouse, a lot of down to Earth guys, a couple goofballs, but it's real good, it's been fun. It's good to see some of those guys' hard work pay off, and clinching the first half was fun -- that was the first time I've been a part of that. But we just got back to work the next day, and we're looking to win the second half too."

VIERA, Fla. - In just his third start of the season, Brevard County right-hander Austin Ross recorded a season-high eight strikeouts, as the Manatees defeated the Bradenton Marauders, 3-1 at Space Coast Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Marauders scored in the first inning, but that was the only run they could muster off of Ross, in his six frames of work. Jeff Roy worked a leadoff walk and moved to second on his 16th stolen base of the year. Roy moved up to third on a ground out and then scored on a passed ball to give Bradenton an early 1-0 lead.

Ross would settle down after that, as he did not allow a hit through the first four innings and worked smoothly through a couple of jams.

The Manatees (30-28) led 2-1 in the fourth, but Ross faced the middle of the Marauders' order with runners on the corners and one out. He then proceeded to strike out Jordan Steranka and Jose Osuna to end the frame.

The Marauders (30-29) had a big opportunity the following inning, as well. Bradenton had Jin-De Jhang on third and Eric Wood on second with the 'Tees still leading by one run.

Roy hit a ground ball to first baseman Garrett Cooper who fielded and threw home. Brevard catcher Parker Berberet was waiting for Jhang at the plate, ran him down the third base line and tagged him for the second out of the inning. Ross then fanned Max Moroff, to finish the inning unscathed.

In the end, Ross (5-0, 2.56 ERA) allowed one unearned run over six innings of work. He gave up three hits and walked two, en route to his third straight victory.

Brevard County's offense helped Ross out early. After the Marauders took their one-run lead, Nathan Orf led off the Manatees' half of the first with a walk. With one out, Tyrone Taylor ripped a double down the left field line that scored Orf and tie the game. Nicky Delmonico followed with an RBI single - his first of two hits on the night - to put the 'Tees in front, 2-1.

Victor Roache and Yadiel Rivera helped the 'Tees add insurance in the seventh. Roache led off with a single and moved to third on a ground-rule double by Cooper, who made his return to the lineup for the first time since May 20.

Brevard had runners on second and third with one out and Rivera hit a chopper to Wood at third base. Wood's only play on the high-bouncer was to first base, which allowed Roache to score and give the Manatees a 3-1 advantage.

A pair of relievers helped the Manatees seal the win down the stretch. Lefty Mike Strong made his first appearance since May 23 and pitched a scoreless seventh inning.

After Strong finished, Kevin Shackelford pitched the eighth and ninth. He allowed one hit, but no runs and struck out one to pick up his second save with the 'Tees this season.

John Kuchno (3-5, 4.06) took the loss for Bradenton. He gave up three runs on six hits over seven innings. The Marauders' right-handed starter struck out two and issued two walks.

Brevard County and Bradenton will continue their four-game set on Thursday night at 6:35 p.m. at Space Coast Stadium. The Manatees will send Damien Magnifico (3-4, 2.39) to the mound against southpaw Orlando Castro (3-3, 2.77) for the Marauders.

Brennan's blast sends Rattlers to win

Wisconsin tops Kernels 6-4 on walkoff homer

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/7/4/8/78324748/cuts/Brennan_Leap_WEB_vecxhrgt_rq433pjv.jpg

Taylor Brennan bounds into home plate as his teammates greet him after his walkoff home run to beat Cedar Rapids on June 4.

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Taylor Brennan found out on Wednesday afternoon that he would be the starting third baseman for the Western Division in the 2014 Midwest League All-Star Game. Brennan celebrated on Wednesday night with a two-run, walkoff home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to a 6-4 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

The first three Timber Rattlers to bat in the bottom of the first collected hits and Wisconsin had a 2-0 lead. Johnny Davis and Omar Garcia singled to start the frame. Garcia stole second to get into scoring position. Michael Ratterree followed with a double to left that scored both runners.

Cedar Rapids (27-32) loaded the bases in the top of the third inning when their first three batters of the frame reached on a double, a hit batsman, and a walk. Wisconsin starting pitcher Tyler Alexander walked Bryan Haar on four pitches to force in a run. But, Alexander worked out of the inning with a force out at the plate, a strikeout, and a grounder to short.

Alexander ran into trouble again in the fourth. He hit Ryan Walker and gave up a single to Engelb Vielma before being removed from the game. Alexander had 90 pitches - 46 strikes - in 3-1/3 innings and was relieved by Rodolfo Fernandez.

Fernandez got the second out, but walked the next batter to reload the bases. A passed ball on Clint Coulter with Haar at the plate allowed Walker to score the tying run.

The game remained tied to the sixth inning. Then, things got intense.

Taylor Williams, another Timber Rattlers All-Star, took over on the mound in the top of the sixth and allowed a double to Chad Christensen. Mitch Garver followed with a single to second to drive in Christensen to put the Kernels in front. An error on the play allowed Christensen to take second base. He would eventually score from third on a wild pitch by Williams and the Kernels were up 4-2.

Wisconsin (27-31) responded in the bottom of the sixth. Michael Ratterree was hit by a pitch to start the frame. Coulter, who was named the starting designated hitter for the Western Division All-Stars earlier on Wednesday, crushed a 1-0 pitch from Slegers to left for a two-run homer to tie the game. The homer was Coulter's eleventh of the season and he leads the Midwest League in that category.

The next pitch from Slegers was too close for comfort for Jose Pena and he stared down Slegers. Kernels catcher Michael Quesada got between Pena and Slegers and the benches and bullpens cleared to form a mob around the plate area. Words were exchanged between some as others tried to get the players back to the bench. There was a fifteen minute delay as the situation was sorted out by the umpiring crew.

Wisconsin lost pitching coach Elvin Nina, Pena, and starting left fielder Omar Garcia to ejections. The Kernels lost Quesada, infielder Joel Licon, who was the first player out of the bullpen, and Bill Springman, the minor league hitting coordinator of the Minnesota Twins who was in town with the Cedar Rapids.

The game resumed with Paul Eshleman taking over for Pena and flying out to center.

Cedar Rapids had an opportunity with runners at the corners and two outs in the top of the seventh. But, Williams struck out Christensen to end the threat. The Kernels stranded fourteen runners on base and went just 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position.

Williams set down the Kernels in order in the eighth and ninth innings to keep the game tied and set the stage for Brennan's dramatics.

Eshleman started the bottom of the ninth inning with a single to right-center against reliever Brandon Bixler. Brennan took the first pitch he saw from Bixler in the ninth. Then, he sent a laser to the right of the batter's eye in center field. The ball hit off the boardwalk beyond the Kernels bullpen for a walkoff homer.

The home run was the first from Brennan since he hit one in the second game of a doubleheader against the Burlington Bees on May 30.

Wednesday marked the second consecutive walkoff win for the Rattlers. Francisco Castillo won Monday's game with a walkoff sacrifice fly to beat the Quad Cities River Bandits. This game was the fifth walkoff win of the season for Wisconsin. It was their second walkoff homer of 2014. Jose Pena hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth to beat Lansing 10-7 in the first game of the doubleheader on April 16.

The second game of the series is Thursday night. Wisconsin pitcher Clint Terry (0-0, 0.00) will make his first start of the season. Cedar Rapids pitcher Fernando Romero will make his 2014 debut. Game time is 7:05pm.

The first 1,000 fans to attend this game will receive a special poster of Timber Rattlers outfielder Omar Garcia presented by Dunkin Donuts. The poster features a series of three photos taken of Garcia before, during, and after the catch he made to be named the #1 play of SportsCenter's Top 10 on May 14.

Tomorrow is also a Thirsty Thursday presented by Arty's Old Fashioned and 95.9 KISS FM. That means 22-oz Pepsi products, 16-oz Miller products, or Arty's Old Fashioned drinks for just $2.

If you can't make it out to the ballpark, tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:45pm. The game is also available to subscribers of MiLB.TV.

Wisconsin Boxscore

Wow what a win, I had given up waiting on the story (a bit gun shy after yesterday) and had to start this post over. None of the pitchers were particularly effective though they limited the damage to 4 runs.

No T-Rat had a multi-hit game and as you read above Clint Coulter, Taylor Brennan, and Michael Ratterree provided the huge XBHs to bring in all 6 runs. Also mentioned above Coulter with another PB and is starting as the DH in the All-Star game, in case you're wondering the starting catcher is Will Remillard of the Cubs. I've yet to talk to anyone who's watched Coulter behind the plate who thinks he's even average at the position, though his bat is drawing rave reviews as it should. His career path will be interesting to follow because his bat is light years ahead of his defense right now.

Wisconsin Recap

Bench clearing altercations don't happen all that often in MLB anymore, even less in the minors.

Ejections: Cedar Rapids Kernels catcher Michael Quesada ejected by HP umpire Adrian Gonzalez (6th); Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Pitching Coach Elvin Nina ejected by 1B umpire Nate Caldwell (6th); Wisconsin Timber Rattlers designated hitter Jose Pena ejected by HP umpire Adrian Gonzalez (6th); Wisconsin Timber Rattlers left fielder Omar Garcia ejected by HP umpire Adrian Gonzalez (7th)

With Coulter's supposedly fantastic arm and good athletic ability; just move him to RF already. His athletic skill set could probably play at multiple positions. Let him work on it for a couple years in MILB while his bat continues to improve.

I don't want them to string Coulter along as a C and then all of a sudden 2 years from now decide that he needs to move.
