NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds proved once again why scoring first usually means a victory in a 4-1 win over the Iowa Cubs at Greer Stadium Monday night.

Nashville is now 24-9 when getting on the board before the opposition, including a 16-1 record when doing so at home.

The Sounds scored the all-important first runs in the bottom of the second with a two-out rally, which was started by a Matt Pagnozzi single. Third baseman Taylor Green and pitcher Taylor Jungmann then followed with RBI singles to give Nashville a 2-0 advantage.

Iowa got a run back in the top of the fourth when Logan Watkins reached on an error by Hunter Morris. He would score later in the inning on a wild pitch.

Jungmann, the No. 6 prospect in the Milwaukee Brewers system according to Baseball America, turned in his second straight quality start, allowing no earned runs in 6.1 innings and striking out eight I-Cubs. He finished the homestand with a 2-0 record and a 0.74 ERA.

The Sounds got some breathing room in the bottom of the sixth when Caleb Gindl hit a 2-1 pitch over the right field wall for a home run. The dinger snapped Iowa Starter Dallas Beeler's streak of retiring 10 straight Nashville hitters.

Beeler finished the game with a quality start of his own, pitching seven innings and allowing three runs on five hits.

Nashville got its final insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when Jeff Bianchi scored because of two I-Cubs errors.

The Sounds bullpen closed the game out with another stellar performance from a number of pitchers. Jeremy Jefferess threw a clean inning, while Brewers reliever Tom Gorzelanny retired both batters he faced in another rehab outing.

Donovan Hand picked up his 12th save of year after pitching a scoreless ninth. Hand has now strung together eight consecutive scoreless outings and has converted his last four save opportunities.

The Sounds will conclude the current homestand with a Tuesday matinee at 12:05 p.m. LHP Brad Mills (4-0, 1.74 ERA) is the scheduled starter for the Sounds, and he is slated to face Iowa LHP Tsuyoshi Wada (4-2, 2.35). Jeff Hem has the call on 102.5-FM "The GAME".

Nashville Boxscore

I'm not sure what to make out of strike out totals against the I-Cubs as they have the second most in the league as a team and added 10 more tonight, this has proven to be free swinging club even without Baez in the line-up. In fact they have 5 players over 40 strike outs already coming into today's game on just this one team. For perspective sake the only Brewer affiliate who's close to having that many players in the line-up is the T-Rats with Ratterree (76), Brennan (55), McFarland (41), and Pena (41). The Brewer organization currently has 11 total players with more than 40 strike outs and 3 are on the MLB roster in Reynolds (62), Gomez (59), and Davis (50). For curiosity sake Nick Ramirez (63), Morris (48), Roache (45), and Halton (42) round out that list.

My big knock against Taylor Jungmann has always been his been the fact that he didn't miss bats, even in college. With a power sinker and an out pitch he could be fairly intriguing in the way that Nelson is. I'm not saying he's magically found an out pitch but his current K rate is far beyond anything he's done in the past and the walks are way down as well. It's encouraging to say the least and he went 1-2 at the plate as well!

The Sounds made the most of their 6 hits scoring 4 runs and no batter had multi-hit night.

Final: DSL Brewers 7, DSL Tigers 11

The Tigers got a pair of runs in the first inning and three more in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead, but the Brewers bats came to life in the sixth to make it a game once again. After Joantgel Segovia drew a one out walk, First baseman Nicol Valderrey singled to put runners at the corners. Johel Atencio's fly ball to right dropped in, allowing Segovia to score, but Valderrey was thrown out going to second base on a force out for the second out of the inning. Third baseman Raphachel Colatosti drew a two out walk, bringing Yerald Martinez to the plate with two men on. Martinez followed with a triple to right, scoring both Atencio and Colatosti and pulling the Brewers back in to the game at 5-3.

The Tigers went to the bullpen to try to snuff out the Brewers rally, but Kevin Martinez greeted new pitcher Enrique De Pena with an infield single that scored Yerald Martinez to bring the Brewers within a run at 5-4.

The Brewers would take the lead in the seventh as they plated three more runs. Segovia got things going once again with a leadoff single to left and moved to second on a groundout by Valderrey. Atencio singled to left and Segovia tried to score from second on the play but was thrown out at the plate. Despite the out at the plate, Atencio was able to move to second on the play and then took third on a wild pitch. Colatosti drew a walk to put runners at the corners and Yerald Martinez singled to left to score Atencio and tie the game at 5-5. Then Kevin Martinez ripped a double to right to knock in both Colatosti and Yerald Martinez and give the Brewers a 7-5 lead.

The lead wouldn't last long however as the Tigers answered right back in the bottom of the seventh. Pedro Peguero came on to work the seventh for the Brewers but could not locate the plate, walking four consecutive batters and uncorking a pair of wild pitches. Peguero was quickly replaced with Juan Diaz with the bases loaded and nobody out and the Brewers clinging to a 7-6 lead.

Diaz struck out the first batter he faced, but then allowed a single, walk, and another single to cough up the lead. The Tigers would hang five runs on the Brewers bullpen in the seventh and another in the eighth, and shut down the Brewers the rest of the way to pick up an 11-7 win.

DSL Brewers Box Score

Not a great outing for the 20-year-old Pedro Peguero. He faced four batters, walked all four, and was lifted without retiring a batter. Nattino Diplan was the Brewers starter and didn't fare much better, allowing eight hits and five runs (four earned) in 4.2 innings. Kevin Martinez singled, doubled, drew a walk and knocked in three runs, while Yerald Martinez singled, tripled and collected three RBI. 17-year-old Venezuelan outfielder Joantgel Segovia was 2-for-3 with a walk. Segovia also recorded a pair of outfield assists.

Brevard County 1, Charlotte 2 (10 Innings)

Brevard drops twinbill opener in extras

'Tees lose on walk-off to Charlotte for second straight game

Brevard County starting pitcher Jorge Lopez, seen here in a game from earlier this season, went six innings and struck out five, but did not factor in the decision as the Manatees were defeated by the Charlotte Stone Crabs, 2-1 in the first game of Monday night's doubleheader at Charlotte Sports Park. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - For the second straight game, the Brevard County Manatees fell victim to a walk-off hit off the bat of Jonathan Quinonez as they fell 2-1 in ten innings to the Charlotte Stone Crabs, in the first game of Monday night's doubleheader at Charlotte Sports Park.

The Stone Crabs' third baseman had already delivered a walk-off hit on Saturday night and he came to the plate with the score tied 1-1 and Marty Gantt on first base. Gantt had worked a one-out walk against Stephen Peterson, to give Quinonez a chance to be the hero for the second straight game. Quinonez did just that, as he roped a double to left-center field to score Gantt with the game-winning run.

Brevard County had taken an early lead thanks to Nicky Delmonico. Delmonico led off the second inning by driving a high fly ball over the right field wall to put the 'Tees on top, 1-0.

The Manatees held the lead until the bottom of the fifth, when Charlotte's Maxx Tissenbaum sparked a rally. Tissenbaum ripped a leadoff double to right-center and moved to third on a wild pitch by Brevard County starting pitcher Jorge Lopez. Josh Sale then worked a walk to put runners on the corners with nobody out.

Lopez settled down and induced a ground ball double play off the bat of Gantt. However, Tissenbaum came across to score the tying run, to knot the score at 1-1.

That score remained the same until Quinonez's clutch double in the tenth. With the loss, the Manatees have now suffered six walk-off losses this season and have not had a walk-off victory of their own.

Peterson took the loss for the 'Tees. He allowed the one run over 1.1 innings of work. The left-hander struck out one, walked one and allowed a pair of hits.

In the no-decision, Lopez allowed one run on three hits, while walking two and fanning five.

Scott Lieser made his Manatees debut, as well. He pitched a pair of scoreless innings in relief of Lopez. The St. Cloud State product did not allow a hit and struck out two.

Brevard County Box Score

Jorge Lopez deserved a better fate. He went six innings and gave up just one run on three hits. Michael Garza had the only mulit-hit game, picking up a pair of singles. Nicky Delmonico homered and walked. Victor Roache was back in the lineup for the first time in almost two weeks, but went 0-for-4. Speaking of returning outfielders, Michael Reed should be coming off the DL soon (perhaps tomorrow) after missing the past few weeks with an oblique injury.

Brevard County Play-By-Play

Delmonico's home run to lead off the second was all the offense that Brevard could manage in game one.

Brevard County Top of the 2nd

Nick Delmonico homers (2) on a fly ball to right field.

Cameron Garfield grounds out, shortstop Leonardo Reginatto to first baseman Patrick Leonard.

Victor Roache strikes out swinging.

Yadiel Rivera singles on a line drive to center fielder Kes Carter.

Mike Garza singles on a line drive to right fielder Marty Gantt. Yadiel Rivera to 3rd.

Brandon Macias strikes out swinging.

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - Behind six shutout innings by starting pitcher Hobbs Johnson, the Brevard County Manatees downed the Charlotte Stone Crabs, 3-0 in game two of Monday's doubleheader at Charlotte Sports Park.

Johnson carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning before giving out a one-out single to Kes Carter. Prior to that, the southpaw had set down the first 13 Stone Crabs hitters with just one strikeout.

Brevard's starting pitcher had to work out of trouble after surrendering the no-hit bid. Jake Depew followed Carter's single with a bloop hit to shallow left field. Charlotte (27-28) had runners on first and second with one out, but Johnson struck out both Marty Gantt and Julian Ridings to end the inning.

Johnson only allowed one more hit the rest of the way, which happen to be against his former college teammate at the University of North Carolina, Tommy Coyle. In the end, Johnson (5-6, 2.66 ERA) finished the game with six scoreless innings under his belt, three hits allowed and three strikeouts.

Brevard County (29-27) scored its three runs in three separate innings. A two-out rally opened the scoring in the top of the third when Orlando Arcia slammed a triple to right field. Tyrone Taylor came up next and singled up the middle to score Arcia with the game's first run.

The 'Tees added insurance the following inning, as Alfredo Rodriguez started the frame with a double to left field and then Mike Garza hit a one-out bloop single to right to put runners on the corners. Parker Berberet then hit a hard line drive to left field. Berberet's liner was caught on the track by Ridings, but Rodriguez scored from third to give the 'Tees a 2-0 lead.

A series of walks gave the Manatees their final run. Stone Crabs' reliever Nick Sawyer walked four men in the sixth; including a bases-loaded free pass to Jose Sermo to drive in Rodriguez.

The Manatees held a 3-0 lead going into the seventh and Mark Williams came in for the save. Williams worked a perfect frame with two ground outs and a fly out to record his second Florida State League save of the year.

The Manatees will go for the four-game series split against the Stone Crabs on Tuesday night, with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tyler Wagner (4-3, 1.94) will pitch for the 'Tees against Charlotte's Jeff Ames (1-6, 6.29).

Brevard County Box Score

Hobbs Johnson with six shutout innings and only three hits allowed, lowering his season ERA to 2.66. Michael Garza picked up two more hits, Alfredo Rodriguez doubled and walked twice and Orlando Arcia tripled and walked.

Brevard County Play-By-Play

Johnson allowed a couple of singles, but struck out the side in the fifth.

Stars clinch the playoffs with a Smokies loss. Remember last year at this time, everything was going bad for the Brewers? It's hard to imagine a better start for the whole organization than they have had this year. Now get Charlie Greene up to Appleton to work with Coulter on his catching skills.

Final: @Jackson 9, Huntsville 4, eight innings (rain)

Stars Clinch First Half Title

Jackson, TN - The Huntsville Stars clinched the first half of the Southern League North Division Monday night with a 9-4 loss to the Jackson Generals. The game was called after the eighth inning due to rain. The Stars were able to clinch a playoff spot as Birmingham defeated Tennessee 10-5 officially eliminating Tennessee. The Stars have a 12.5 game lead on Tennessee with twelve games to play.

Jackson scored six runs against Stars starter Brent Suter in the first inning. Dario Pizzano highlighted the inning with a grand slam over the centerfield wall.

The Stars did not score until the fifth inning. Shea Vucinich got the Stars on the board with an RBI double. Greg Hopkins scored on a wild pitch and Nick Shaw provided a sacrifice fly cutting the deficit to 6-3.

In the bottom of the fifth, Manny Pina hit a homer over the left field wall making it 7-3. Jack Marder later in the inning tripled to the alley in right center giving the Generals a comfortable 8-3 lead.

With the Stars trailing 9-3 in the seventh, Nick Ramirez singled home Vucinich making it 9-4.

The Stars were trailing 9-4 after they batted in the eighth inning. Rain had been coming down for the majority of the game. The umpires finally decided to call the game after a thirty minute delay.

Suter, who took the loss went five innings giving up nine hits on eight runs (seven earned). He walked three and struck out to as he fell to 6-4.

Even though the Stars lost to Jackson, they clinched a spot in the Southern League playoffs in September for winning the first half of the season. The Stars will play in the postseason for the first time since 2009. The Stars became the first team in all of minor league baseball to clinch a playoff spot.

The Stars are led by first year manager Carlos Subero. "It means a lot, says Subero. We're prepared to succeed. Our kids have been diligent. They grind it out. Every night is a different kid picking each other up. We still have a big challenge ahead of us. We still have twelve games to play in the first half and seventy in the second half. Still eighty two games left. We've got to go about it the right way the rest of the way," said Subero.

The Generals (24-33) lead the Stars (39-19) 2-1 in their five game series. Game four is Tuesday night. LHP Jed Bradley will make his Huntsville debut. Jackson's starter is RHP Victor Sanchez (1-1, 5.40). Tuesday's game can be heard with Steve Jarnicki starting at 6:50 PM CDT on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM and wtkiradio.com.

Huntsville Box Score

Congrats to the Stars, but this may be the most anti-climactic division clinch ever. On the road. In the rain. Surrender grand slam in the first inning. No mound dogpile.

Might we see more liberal moves between Huntsville and Nashville now, since the AAA Sounds only play a full-season standings schedule? Nothing seems imminent.

Brent Suter's 2nd rough outing in three starts was even uglier than you might think - an error, two HBP, a wild pitch, only 55 strikes (94 pitches) are the numbers beyond those you see in his box score line. The southpaw did pick off two baserunners.

Kentrail Davis has a .400 OBP in his last ten games, but has only one extra-base hit in that span (.713 OPS). He singled and walked three times here. Josh Prince singled and walked twice.

No win, no matter: Huntsville clinches title

With Smokies loss, Stars secure first-half championship in SL North

By Mark Emery / MiLB.com

In the Stars' last season in Alabama, Huntsville became the first club in the Minors to clinch a postseason berth.

The team entered Monday needing a win over Jackson or a Tennessee loss to Birmingham to clinch a Southern League North first-half championship. The Smokies dropped their eighth in a row, 10-5, so Huntsville's rain-shortened 9-4 defeat later in the evening stung a little less.

While next season will begin with the Stars playing in Biloxi, Mississippi, this season will end with them attempting to capture the organization's fourth Southern League title.

"It's very special. It's great," Huntsville manager Carlos Subero said. "We just had our bus driver, Cliff, come here with watery eyes. You can see the emotion in the park this year, with people that want to support the club and know that it's going somewhere else.

"So it's special. Hopefully, we can go all the way through and bring a championship home to a town that's been hosting Minor League Baseball for 30 years."

Under the direction of Subero, batting coach Sandy Guerrero and pitching coach Chris Hook, the Brewers' Double-A affiliate is 39-19 through the year's first 58 games. Before losing the first two games of June, the Stars closed May with an eight-game winning streak. They finished the month 23-7, after posting a 16-10 record in April.

The Stars' first-half standouts include pitcher Tyler Cravy, who is 8-1 with a 1.76 ERA and 0.86 WHIP, and first baseman Nick Ramirez, who is batting .267/.333/.489 with 10 home runs and 40 RBIs.

The pitching staff's 3.06 ERA ranks second in the league and first in WHIP at 1.18. Offensively, the Stars have scored 271 runs -- second-most in the league -- and get on base at a league-best .340 clip.

Though Huntsville has a pedestrian .245 batting average, that figure jumps to .272 with runners in scoring position.

"Every night, it's a different kid coming through," Subero said.

Between the players' clutch hitting and the fans' heartfelt support, the Stars' season has taken on a singular feeling. Not that it's anywhere near finished yet.

"There's 82 games left. We can't lose sight of what's ahead," Subero said. "I think it will be a great challenge. It'll show a lot of their character. We've still got 12 games left in the first half, we've got 70 in the second half and you've got to approach it the right way, the same way you've been approaching these past 58 games."

Jungmann solid again in second Sounds win

No. 8 Brewers prospect allows just an unearned run over 6 1/3 innings

By Tyler Maun / MiLB.com

Taylor Jungmann made big strides from his first Triple-A start to his first win. Monday night, in his third Pacific Coast League outing, the right-hander looked like a pitcher already very comfortable in his surroundings.

The Brewers' No. 8 prospect allowed one unearned run on four hits while striking out eight in 6 1/3 innings to pick up his second Triple-A win in Nashville's 4-1 victory over Iowa.

Coming off his first win for the Sounds five days ago, Jungmann (2-1) was methodical Monday, facing the minimum through his first two innings and working around traffic in the third. Cubs leadoff man Logan Watkins reached on a fielding error by first baseman Hunter Morris in the fourth and later scored on a wild pitch for the lone tally on Jungmann's line.

"It was nice to go out there and throw well to help my team win -- that's what I'm trying to do, get my team a win," Jungmann said after his first victory for Nashville on May 28 over Colorado Springs. "I felt good. It wasn't my best stuff, but I was able to throw strikes. I was able to come back in 2-0 counts."

Like that start, the Sounds never trailed Monday by virtue of RBI singles by Taylor Green and Jungmann, helping his own cause, in the bottom of the second. Nashville added a run in the sixth on a solo homer by Caleb Gindl and another on a throwing error by Iowa catcher Luis Flores that scored Jeff Bianchi in the eighth.

Jungmann retired nine of the final 11 batters he faced, striking out four batters over that span, including No. 6 Cubs prospect Arismendy Alcantara and No. 11 Christian Villanueva. Overall, the righty threw 55 of his 90 pitches for strikes and walked just one.

Donovan Hand gave up two hits but struck out two in the ninth to pick up his 12th save.

Iowa starter Dallas Beeler (2-2) allowed three runs on five hits while striking out three and walking one over seven innins.
