Manatees turn up heat with solid pitching

Florida Today

The Brevard County Manatees are 5-2 in their past seven games, riding strong starting pitching to get back into the hunt in the Florida State League North standings.

The Manatees are second in ERA in the FSL, at 2.65. Only Dunedin is better with a 2.51. Over the past seven games, the starters have given up an average of two runs in 46 innings.

They have done it without Jed Bradley, who went to Double A last week. Every starter has logged at least one quality start in that stretch.

Tonight's pitcher in Game 1 of the doubleheader at Port Charlotte, Jorge Lopez, is coming off a dominating performance in which he tossed eight innings, allowing one unearned run. Lopez is 6-2 with a 3.17 ERA, tying St. Lucie's Matthew Koch for most wins in the FSL.

Game 2 starter Hobbs Johnson gave up two earned runs in his recent outing and comes in sporting a 2.95 ERA in 10 appearances.

Tyler Wagner leads the staff in ERA, posting a 1.94 mark, good for eighth in the FSL.

Damien Magnifico is just outside the top 10 in ERA, flashing a 2.39 through 11 starts. He is one of seven FSL starters to toss a complete game.

Austin Ross has joined the rotation since the loss of Bradley and filled in nicely, allowing three earned runs in 13 innings.

It's always Awards Season for the system in 2014!

Via the Stars --

The Southern League announced today that Stars pitcher Andy Moye has been named Pitcher of the Week for the week of May 26th-June 1st.

Moye pitched six scoreless innings in a 5-1 win against Tennessee to complete the sweep of the Smokies. Moye allowed one hit and struck out three batters.

Since his return from the Disabled List on May 25th, Moye (1-0, 0.77 ERA) has surrendered just one run in 10 innings. Moye marks the third Stars pitcher to win Pitcher of the Week for the 2014 season.

It's still early in his career but you'd have to go back a long ways to find a #1 overall pick who's struggled as much out of the gate as Appel, all the way back in 2004 Matt Bush was taken #1 overall and was as awful in his first full season. He was just okay in limited action after the draft last year but 2014 has been a struggle.

Astros' Appel 'humbled' by tough loss

Top '13 Draft pick allowed 10 runs in 1 1/3 innings for Lancaster

Ninth inning homer sinks Rattlers

River Bandits beat Rattlers 7-4 in conclusion of Sunday's suspended game

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and Quad Cities River Bandits completed their suspended game from Sunday on Monday afternoon. The Rattlers fought back to tie the game with two runs in the bottom of the eighth. But, Brett Booth homered to break the tie in the top of the ninth. Quad Cities added two more runs and sent the Rattlers to a 7-4 defeat at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

On Sunday, the teams traded first inning solo home runs. Chan-Jong Moon hit his first homer of the season in the top half to give Quad Cities (30-26) the lead. Michael Ratterree hit his tenth home run of the season in the bottom of the first to tie the game.

Booth doubled to drive in a run in the top of the second. Wisconsin (25-31) tied the game in the bottom of the third on Clint Coulter's bloop single to right with two outs that allowed Ratterree to score all the way from first base.

Tyler White homered in the top of the fourth and the River Bandits were up 3-2.

The first rain delay on Sunday came with one out in the bottom of the fourth inning. It lasted 24 minutes before the game restarted.

The second rain delay happened in the bottom of the fifth inning with two outs, a runner at second base, and Jose Pena at the plate with a 1-2 count. Rain halted play at that point.

Milwaukee Brewers third baseman Aramis Ramirez went 0-for-2 with a strikeout at the plate on Sunday. He did not take the field after the first rain delay. Ramirez is scheduled to be Wisconsin's designated hitter in Tuesday's regularly scheduled game.

Pena flew out to center on the first pitch of the restart.

The River Bandits added to their lead in the top of the sixth inning against reliever Tristan Archer. Brett Phillips doubled with one out and scored on a single by White for a 4-2 lead.

The Rattlers rallied in the bottom of the eighth inning. Coulter was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Taylor Brennan doubled with one out. Francisco Castillo's hard grounder to the right side of the infield deflected off the glove of Jon Kemmer, the first baseman who made a diving attempt on the ball. The change of direction allowed the ball to get past Moon at second and make it into the outfield. Coulter scored easily and Brennan scored from second on a head first dive to tie the game.

Quad Cities had an answer in the top of the ninth. Booth led off the inning with a solo home run, his first homer of the season, to give the River Bandits a 5-4 lead. Ronnie Mitchell reached on a single with one out. A two out single to center by Tanner Mathis resulted in Mitchell scoring due to a pair of errors on the play. Mathis wound up at third on the play. He scored on a single by Chase McDonald and the Bandits were up 7-4.

The Rattlers got a leadoff single by Angle Ortega in the bottom of the ninth inning, but he was left stranded as Andrew Walter struck out the next three batters to close out the game.

Wisconsin is at six games under the .500 mark for the first time this season.

The series concludes with a game on Monday afternoon. Preston Gainey (1-3, 3.20) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. The River Bandits have Andrew Thurman (2-3, 5.83) as their scheduled starter. Game time is 12:05pm.

Milwaukee Brewers third baseman Aramis Ramirez is scheduled to make his second appearance with the Timber Rattlers as part of his major league rehabilitation assignment on Monday.

Monday is a Qdoba Q*Monday. Purchase a lunch entrée at either Qdoba location in Appleton (3813 E. Calumet Street or 4343 W. Wisconsin Avenue) and receive a ticket to this game or any other Monday home game during the 2014 regular season.

Wisconsin Suspended Game Boxscore

You would think looking at the peripherals from Harvey Martin's season line that he would be having a good season, but he continues to give up hits in bunches, even though the defense didn't help him out in the 9th after he gave up the HR. All told the T-Rats pitchers gave up 15 hits, 3 HRs, and 4 walks against just 4 strike outs in this game.

The offense was pretty decent though with 10 hits; 2 each for Michael Ratterree (2-4,HR,BB), Clint Coulter (2-3,2B), Francisco Castillo (2-4), and Paul Eshlemen (2-3).

Jose Pena and Johnny Davis tallied OF assists in the game, however the T-Rats also committed 3 errors in the contest.

Huntsville Stars have Southern League first-half pennant within their reach

Mark McCarter, Huntsville Stars

The Huntsville Stars are on the cusp of extending their stay in the city by a few more days.

With nearly two weeks remaining in the first half, the Stars could tonight clinch their first Southern League playoff berth since 2009.

The Stars are 39-18 this half with 13 games remaining. The Tennessee Smokies, swept last week by the Stars in a five-game series, are 26-30. The Stars own the best record in the Southern League overall (4.5 better than South-leading Mobile) and have the fourth-best record in all minor league baseball.

The Stars are visiting the Jackson (Tenn.) Generals tonight, while Tennessee hosts Birmingham. Either a Huntsville win or Tennessee loss will clinch for the Stars.

The Stars end the trip to Jackson on Wednesday with a day game, then return to host Mobile and Chattanooga in a 10-game home stand.

The Barons (25-32), Generals (23-33) and Chattanooga Lookouts (22-35) have already long been mathematically eliminated.

Pitching has been the key for Huntsville - the 2.98 team ERA is second-best in the league - and one of the aces, Brent Suter, takes the mound tonight at Jackson. He's been one of a strong foursome, along with Tyler Cravy, Drew Gagnon and the recently promoted Taylor Jungmann, to lead the way.

However, the most recent Southern League pitcher of week is Andy Moye, a veteran who has recently come off the disabled list and has a microscopic 0.77 ERA in three starts. Moye pitched six innings of shutout ball, allowing only one hit, in one of the victories over Tennessee last week.

Huntsville's tenure as a member of the Southern League is scheduled to end on Monday, Sept. 1 with the home regular-season finale, but a playoff berth assures at least one more game in a best-of-five playoff tier that would pit the Stars against the second-half Southern League North winner. Should the Stars win both halves, they'd be in line to host four of the five games (if needed) against the North division team with the best overall record behind them.

The Stars' last playoff appearance saw them lose three games to one to Tennessee in the North playoffs in 2009.

In both 2006 and 2007, Huntsville reached the Southern League championship series against Montgomery, losing three games to one in '06, then losing a heartbreaker in 2007 on a ninth-inning game-five homer by the Biscuits' Sergi Pedroza as Huntsville stadium employees were in the process of hauling the championship trophy to the Stars' side of the field.

Huntsville owns only three Southern League championships, knocking off Charlotte in 1985 in the first year of the franchise, then beating Carolina in 1994. It shared the 2001 title with Jacksonville when the playoffs were cancelled after the 9/11 attacks. All told, the Stars have made 12 postseason appearances, five coming as a Milwaukee affiliate (1999-present), seven as an Oakland A's farm club (1985-1998).

My goodness, how much weight might Victor Roache have lost?

Via the 'Tees --

For the first time in 11 days, OF Victor Roache will be in the lineup for Brevard County. Roache has been out since May 21 with the virus that has gone through the Manatees clubhouse. Roache will hit sixth and play left field in game one of today’s doubleheader.

Orlando Arcia has been stellar all year for Brevard, both in the field and at the plate

***

You read that, and then you realize that Arcia lost the entirety of 2012 to ankle surgery. Technically, he's playing at 19, but from a development standpoint, he's playing at 18.

Awesome...

You folks placed him (respectfully) at #4 in your community rankings.

Jorge Lopez has taken a huge step forward this year. He is only in his age 21 season at Low A. Definitely a kid to keep following. When I watched him with the Timber Rattlers it sure looked like he had pretty solid stuff but he tended to be all over the place. He is definitely one of the higher upside guys in the organization.

Rattlers stop River Bandits win streak at six

Castillo's walkoff sacrifice fly gives Rattlers 4-3 win

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Francisco Castillo delivered two big RBI for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Monday in the conclusion of Sunday's game against the Quad Cities River Bandits at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The Wisconsin second baseman tied that game with a two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning, but the Rattlers fell 7-4. Castillo got another chance in a big spot in Monday's second game and he came through with a walkoff sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh for a 4-3 Wisconsin win.

Ronnie Mitchell homered to lead off the top of the second inning and the River Bandits (30-27) were up 1-0.

Omar Garcia doubled to start Wisconsin's third inning and took third on a sacrifice bunt by Angel Ortega. Garcia scored the tying run on a passed ball later in the inning. But, the game did not stay tied for long.

Tyler White hit a long home run to left to lead off the top of the fourth and Quad Cities had a 2-1 lead. Rattlers starting pitcher Preston Gainey hit Mitchell with the next pitch and was ejected by the plate umpire. Lefty Trevor Seidenberger took over for Gainey.

The Rattlers (26-31) took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning against reliever Chris Lee. Angel Ortega, Johnny Davis, and Aramis Ramirez came up with three straight singles to load the bases with one out. Michael Ratterree drew a walk to force in the run to tie the game 2-2. The River Bandits could only get a force play at second on Clint Coulter's chopper to third and that let Davis score the run that made it 3-2. But, the Rattlers did not lead for long.

Seidenberger retired the first two batters in the top of the sixth. Then, White hit a home run to left. That was the fourth home run of the season for White, who hit three homers off the Timber Rattlers in the last two games of the series. This homer tied the game 3-3.

That homer also ended a streak for Seidenberger, who had not allowed an earned run in 21-1/3 consecutive innings.

Ramirez, who was on a rehabilitation assignment with Wisconsin for the Milwaukee Brewers, stepped to the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning with Rafael Neda at second and Davis at first with two outs and a chance to put the Rattlers in front. Ramirez sent a line drive right at first baseman Jon Kemmer for the final out. Ramirez went 2-for-4 on Monday with a pair of singles. He was 2-for-6 in his rehab assignment with the Timber Rattlers.

In the top of the seventh, Kemmer doubled to the gap in left-center. However, he tried to stretch that hit into a triple and he was out on a strong relay throw from Ortega.

Coulter drew a one out walk in the bottom of the seventh and Taylor Brennan singled to right to put runners at the corners. Castillo had two strikes against him, but he fouled off a pair of pitches before he sent a fly ball to medium right-center field. Coulter tagged and scored as the throw to the plate was high to let the Rattlers celebrate their fifth walkoff win of the season.

The Timber Rattlers are off on Tuesday. They return to action on Wednesday night to host the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Tyler Alexander (4-3, 3.43) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Aaron Slegers (5-2, 4.95) is set to start for the Kernels. Game time is 7:05pm.

The school year is over and it's time for the teachers, support staff, and others in education to get out and celebrate with a night at a Timber Rattlers game. There will be prizes and special ticket offers for all those involved in education. Everyone may enjoy Cher-Make hotdogs, Pepsi products, and Miller beer for $1 as the Rattlers take on the Kernels.

If you can't make it out to the ballpark, there are many ways to catch the action. MyNEW 32's Sports Showdown will televise the game starting with their pregame show at 6:30pm. The radio broadcast is available on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the pregame show at 6:45pm. Subscribers to MiLB.TV can watch the game, too.

HOME RUNS:

QC:

Ronnie Mitchell (8th, 0 on in 2nd inning off Preston Gainey, 0 out)

Tyler White (3rd, 0 on in 4th inning off Preston Gainey, 0 out)

Tyler White (4th, 0 on in 6th inning off Trevor Seidenberger, 0 out)

WP: Trevor Seidenberger (5-1)

LP: Chris Lee (2-3)

TIME: 2:07

ATTN: 4,071

Wisconsin Boxscore

Mehring was very upset about Preston Gainey's ejection as was manager Matt Erickson who was nearly ejected as well. Between the 2 games Rattler pitchers gave up 6 solo HRs, they had come into today with the fewest HRs given up in the Midwest League.

Johnny Davis (3-4) was the only prospect with a multi-hit game, an impressive showing in just 7 innings, though only 1 of those hits left the infield. The T-Rats played much better defense in the regularly scheduled contest and Omar Garcia notched an OF assist.

Twinsights: Arcia brothers on a collision course

Mike Berardino, blogs.twincities.com

Perhaps in the not-too-distant future, this annual interleague clash between neighboring rivals will also feature a clash of brothers.

And considering their relative youth, it could go on for many years.

Orlando Arcia, younger brother of Twins right fielder Oswaldo Arcia, is a well-regarded middle infield prospect in the Milwaukee Brewers organization. Baseball America rated him the No. 7 prospect for the Brewers this offseason.

“Anybody that sees Orlando play just gets amazed about his baseball instincts,” Oswaldo Arcia said through a translator last season. “Lots of scouts in Venezuela and here in the (U.S.), that’s the first thing they tell me: The baseball maturity that kid has is amazing. If he keeps working he definitely should be in the majors at the same age as me or younger.”

Oswaldo Arcia, who turned 23 on May 9, opened the year tied for eighth among the majors’ youngest players.

At 19 years, seven months, Orlando was the youngest player to make an Opening Day roster in the Florida State League. Class A Fort Myers right-hander Jose Berrios, two months older, was the second-youngest at the start of the season in the FSL.

The Twins also had the eighth-youngest player in the FSL to start the year: shortstop Jorge Polanco at 20 years, seven months.

Orlando, who doesn’t turn 20 until Aug. 4, entered Monday’s play hitting .262 in 53 games for Class A Brevard County. Blessed with better speed than his brother but lacking his power, Orlando had a .332 on-base percentage but was slugging just .335.

He had yet to homer but did have nine doubles, three triples and 10 stolen bases in 14 attempts. Orlando also had made 12 errors while splitting his time between shortstop (27 games) and second base (24 games).

A broken ankle had slowed Orlando in the Midwest League in 2012, but he has since reclaimed his career momentum.

While Oswaldo bats left handed, Orlando bats right. Both are listed at 6 foot, but Oswaldo is listed at 220 pounds while Orlando is still listed at just 165 pounds.
