AUDIO via Jeff Hem's blog --

"Today’s interview is with right-hander Jimmy Nelson, who set a new career-high last night with 11 strikeouts over 7 2/3 dominant innings against the I-Cubs in the Sounds’ 2-1 win. It was Nelson’s first outing with the Sounds since coming back from the Brewers, for whom he pitched last Sunday in Miami en route to his first big league victory. Nelson discusses that outing, his outing last night, the development of his change-up to go with his heavy fastball and power slider and his quest for his first career hit (0-for-54), which nearly came last night on a liner to second base."

Sunday's game suspended by rain

Rattlers and River Bandits will restart the game on Monday at 12:05pm

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattler

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Sunday's game between the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and Quad Cities River Bandits at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium has been suspended by rain. The teams will restart the game on Monday, June 2 at 12:05pm. A seven-inning game will follow the completion of the suspended game.

Quad Cities was leading the Rattlers 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning with a runner at second, two outs, and a 1-2 count on Jose Pena. Then, a heavy downpour hit the ballpark and forced the umpire to call for the tarp to be placed on the field. Had the River Bandits recorded the final out of the inning, the game would have been official and the River Bandits would have won their sixth straight game.

The teams endured a 24-minute rain delay in the bottom of the fourth inning. Play resumed after the first band of showers pushed through in the bottom of the fourth, but the severe thunderstorms and heavy rain that fell after the second delay forced the suspension.

The weather also forced a shorter rehabilitation appearance for Brewers third baseman Aramis Ramirez. Ramirez was to get three plate appearances on Sunday for the Rattlers, but did not come out to play the field in the top of the fifth inning after the rain made the infield slick in the bottom of the fourth. Ramirez went 0-for-2 with a popup and a strikeout before being lifted from the game.

The teams will restart Sunday's suspended game on Monday at 12:05pm. The game will be played to its conclusion and the regularly scheduled game will be played after a thirty minute break. The regularly scheduled game is now set for 7-innings.

Fans with tickets for Monday's game will be admitted to both games.

Show your business card when you purchase a ticket and for $13.50 you will receive a box seat ticket, a beverage and your choice of brat or hot dog. The offer is also available to senior citizens (55 & older) courtesy of Baker Tilly, WVBO, and AM1280 WNAM.

Tickets for Sunday's game may be exchanged for the same price ticket to any future regular season Timber Rattlers home game in 2014. Tickets must be exchanged at the Timber Rattlers ticket office. Tickets cannot be replaced if lost, stolen, or destroyed and there are no cash refunds.

The Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium Box Office is open from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm Monday through Friday and Saturdays from 10:00 am to 3:00pm. Individual game tickets for the 2014 Timber Rattlers season are on sale now. Fans may purchase their tickets in person, by calling (800) WI-TIMBER or (920) 733-4152 or online through timberrattlers.com.

Sounds Fall To I-Cubs, 5-2

Nashville's Mike Fiers Earns 8th Quality Start in Loss

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The first-place Nashville Sounds (31-27) had their four-game winning streak come to an end Sunday afternoon at Greer Stadium, as the visiting Iowa Cubs worked a pair of two-run homers for the 5-2 road victory.

The I-Cubs first touched Sounds starter Mike Fiers (6-3) for a home run in the second inning. Christian Villanueva's blast to left field scored Chris Valaika, who singled to lead off the inning for the initial 2-0 advantage.

Pinch hitter Brett Jackson recorded Iowa's second two-run homer in the seventh inning, sending Sounds reliever Michael Blazek's pitch over the right-field wall. It is the first pinch-hit home run against the Sounds since Fresno's Johnny Monell hit one on May 10, 2013.

The Cubs plated an additional run with Blazek on the hill in the eighth inning courtesy of Valaika's sac-fly to right.

Nashville picked up their first run in the home half of the fifth inning when Cubs prospect Javy Baez committed a throwing error, sailing the ball over I-Cubs first baseman Valaika in a double-play attempt, which allowed lead runner Matt Pagnozzi to score and cut the Iowa lead to one run.

Pagnozzi drew a lead-off walk to start the frame and advanced to third on Hainley Statia's single to left field. Statia accounted for two of the Sounds five hits.

Pagnozzi slapped an RBI-single in the ninth inning to bring home pinch hitter Kevin Mattison for the team's final run.

Despite limiting Iowa to two runs on three hits over six innings of work for his eighth quality start this season, Fiers was charged the loss, his third.

Fiers faced a jam in the third inning, with Baez moving from first to third on a pair of stolen bases. With two outs, the 28-year-old walked Valaika to put runners on the corners before escaping without damage with a strikeout.

He finished with seven strikeouts to bring his season total to 92, which leads the minors.

Nashville hurlers have earned 26 quality starts this season, which ranks second in the PCL behind Iowa, who picked up their 32nd with the effort turned in by starter Eric Jokisch (5-4).

Jokisch kept the Sounds quiet through the first four innings and retired his first 11 batters faced. Sean Halton broke the team's hitless stretch with his single to centerfield in the fourth inning. Jokisch picked up the win with his six innings of one-run baseball.

The Sounds will play game three against the Iowa Cubs on Monday at 7:05 p.m. RHP Taylor Jungmann (1-1, 5.00) takes the hill for Nashville, opposite RHP Dallas Beeler (2-0, 5.91). Broadcaster Jeff Hem has the call on 102.5 The Game.

Nashville Boxscore

This has been a Jekyll and Hyde offense of late, all or nothing, feast or famine, however you want to put it. Just 9 hits in the last 2 games...

Mike Fiers was his usual self... low hits & walks, high # of strike outs, too bad one of those hits was a HR which tagged him for the loss.

Final: @Jackson 7, Huntsville 0

Eight Game Win Streak Ends

Jackson, TN - The Jackson Generals spoiled the Huntsville Stars chance of clinching a Southern League first half championship by blanking the Stars 7-0 Sunday night at The Ballpark at Jackson.

The Generals (23-33) ended the Stars (39-18) eight game winning streak and became just the second team to shutout the Stars this year.

Jackson scored in the fourth inning against Stars starter Drew Gagnon (4-2). Dario Pizzano ripped a ball past a diving Stars first baseman Nick Ramirez scoring Ketel Marte.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Jamal Austin singled and stole second base. Marte scored him on an RBI single giving the Generals a 2-0 lead.

Gagnon exited the game and in came reliever Arcenio Leon. After Dan Paolini singled, Patrick Kivlehan reached on a fielder's choice scoring Marte which made it 3-0.

Gagnon went five innings allowing three runs on five hits. He also walked three and struck out three.

In the seventh, Leon Landry produced an RBI single off Leon making it 4-0. Paolini later in the inning lined a two-run single down the left field line.

Jackson scored their final run in the eighth inning against Tommy Toledo. Jack Marder doubled over D'Vontrey Richardson's head in centerfield scoring Manny Pina.

The Stars and Generals are tied 1-1 in their five game series. Game three is Monday night. LHP Brent Suter (6-3, 2.55) will start for the Stars. Jackson's starter is RHP Forrest Snow (0-0, 0.00). Monday's game can be heard with Steve Jarnicki starting at 6:50 PM CDT on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM and wtkiradio.com.

Huntsville Box Score

Despite the loss, the Stars magic number fell to one game as Tennessee (Cubs) lost a 7th consecutive game. The other four teams in the Stars' division are all under .500 (a combined 34 games under).

Shawn Zarraga walked twice as his OBP lifted to .463. In 148 plate appearances, he has 25 walks vs. only 10 K's.

Knowing you all read the media notes daily, but making sure you saw this from Brevard --

ORLANDO MAGIC: Manatees INF Orlando Arcia has been on a tear at the plate over the last several games…Since the beginning of the series at Palm Beach, Arcia has a .370 batting average (17-for-46)…In those 12 games, Arcia has recorded five multi-hit games and four doubles…The infielder has driven in five runs and stolen two bases during this stretch.

BitB Interview with Josh Kusnick – “Then one day, a player said, ‘If you buy me a glove, you’re my agent.’”

Very good read with many Brewers references...

We learn there never really was a decision by Cleveland to be made in the Brantley/Green PTBNL debate --

“The deal was, if the Brewers missed the playoffs, the Player to be Named would be Taylor Green, who is another one of my guys, and if the Brewers made the playoffs, it was Michael Brantley."

Wasn't Supposed to Rain 'til 5... by bjkrautk, on Flickr

Was not terribly impressed by the T-Rats starting pitcher. The defense, including the backup catcher, cut down a number of baserunners in the early innings. I was surprised at the number of bunt attempts, because it seemed so much easier to get on base by swinging the bat.

Ramirez was taken out after the first rain delay, which was disappointing only in that he had been on-deck when the prior inning ended.

Coulter looked pretty good at the plate (not catching; he was the DH).
