NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Jimmy Nelson struck out a career-high 11 batters while working his tenth consecutive quality start to lead the Nashville Sounds to a 2-1 victory over the visiting Iowa Cubs in front of 8,381 fans on Saturday evening at Greer Stadium.

The first-place Sounds (31-26) won their fourth straight game overall and have been victorious in 17 of their last 23 games at Greer.

Nelson (6-1) held Iowa to one run on three hits in his season-high 7 2/3 innings of work, lowering his ERA to 1.64 with the effort. His 11 punchouts topped his previous career best of 10, accomplished on three occasions. Nelson has tossed a quality start in each of his 10 outings for Nashville this season.

First baseman Hunter Morris put the Sounds on the board in the second inning when he slugged his team-leading eighth home run of the year, a leadoff solo shot to right off Iowa starter Chris Rusin that bounded onto Chestnut Street.

Iowa tied the score at 1-1 in the seventh against Nelson. Brett Jackson (2-for-3) legged out a stand-up one-out triple and trotted home on a Jonathan Mota sacrifice fly.

Nashville pulled right back in front, 2-1, in the home half of the seventh. Hector Gomez led off with a single and moved to third on an errant pickoff throw by Rusin. Sean Halton followed with a popup down the right field line that was nearly caught by a diving Logan Watkins but ended up as a go-ahead RBI double for the Sounds' right fielder.

Rusin (3-7) was tagged with the loss despite hurling a quality start for the I-Cubs. He allowed two runs on four hits in his seven frames of action.

Donovan Hand worked around a pair of baserunners in the eighth and retired the side in order in the ninth to secure the victory and nail down his league-leading 11th save of the year.

The teams continue the series with a 2:05 p.m. matinee on Sunday afternoon. Right-hander Mike Fiers (6-2, 2.48) will make the start for the Sounds and square off against Iowa southpaw Eric Jokisch (4-4, 3.59).

Nashville Boxscore

Jimmy Nelson just keeps keeping on, he even threw 68 of 99 pitches for strikes.

The Sounds needed that stellar effort from Nelson because they managed just 4 hits in the contest but it was enough to plate 2 runs for the win.

Donovan Hand is riding a nice hot streak as he hasn't given up a run since May 12th.

River Bandits edge Wisconsin 4-3

Rattlers start homestand with one-run loss

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Matt Erickson congratulates Clint Coulter on his tenth home run of the season. Coulter's blast was a solo homer in the bottom of the third inning on Saturday night. (Ann Mollica/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers)

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Quad Cities River Bandits got just enough offense to send the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to another frustratingly close loss on Saturday night. The hard charging River Bandits defeated the Rattlers 4-3 at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium in front of Wisconsin's largest home crowd of the season.

Jose Pena gave the assembled 6,168 in attendance something to cheer and - more importantly - the Timber Rattlers (25-30) the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Clint Coulter doubled to right with two away to keep the inning alive. Pena followed with a single to right and Coulter scored. Pena extended a pair of streaks with that RBI single. The Wisconsin designated hitter has a five-game hitting streak and has driven in at least one run in each of the last five games.

Quad Cities (29-26) rallied to tie the game in the top of the second. James Ramsay doubled, went to third on a grounder to second, and scored on a slow chopper up the first base line.

Coulter put the Rattlers back in front with a titanic home run to left field with two outs in the bottom of the third. Coulter's solo shot hit the fence by the pedestrian trail well beyond the outfield fence on one hop and was his tenth home run of the season.

The River Bandits took the lead back in the top of the fourth as they took advantage of a pair of two out walks. Wisconsin starting pitcher Zach Quintana retired the first two batters he faced in the top of the fourth. But, he issued back-to-back walks to Jon Kemmer and Ramsay to keep the inning alive. Chan-Jong Moon sent a high popup down the right field line. Michael Ratterree made a long run and a dive, but the ball dropped just out of his reach. Moon cruised into third with a two-run triple and the Bandits were up 3-2.

Mathis followed with an RBI single on the next pitch to drive in Moon and Quad Cities was up 4-2.

Wisconsin got one of those runs back in the bottom of the fifth. Johnny Davis singled and stole second with one out. Omar Garcia singled to left and Davis to make it a one run deficit.

The Rattlers had chances to even the game. Michael Ratterree doubled with one out in the sixth against Quad Cities starter Evan Grills. Coulter singled, his third hit of the game, with one out in the eighth against reliever Frederick Tiburcio. Francisco Castillo singled with one out in the bottom of the ninth against Tiburcio. But, all three runners were left stranded and the Timber Rattlers fell by a 4-3 score.

Saturday night was the twentieth game decided by a single run the Rattlers have played this season. They are 6-14 in one-run games this year.

The Rattlers managed to stay within a run of the River Bandits despite the issuance of ten walks in the game by Wisconsin pitchers. All ten walks came with two outs in an inning and there were no 1-2-3 innings by the Timber Rattlers defense on Saturday.

Quad Cities has won five straight games and remained one game behind the Peoria Chiefs for the first half Western Division Wild Card. Peoria rallied to defeat Kane County 5-3 on Saturday night. Wisconsin's loss dropped them five games off Wild Card pace with fourteen games remaining in this half of the season.

Game two of the series is Sunday afternoon. Victor Diaz (1-2, 3.15) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Quad Cities will counter with Kevin Comer (0-0, 2.65). Game time is 1:05pm and there will be plenty happening before, during, and after the game.

Fans will be able to meet the newest member of the Brewers family, Hank the Dog. The Ballpark Pup will be available to meet fans near the Festival Foods Grill at the end of the third base concourse from 11:30am to 12:15pm and again from 1:30pm to 2:15pm.

Milwaukee Brewers third baseman Aramis Ramirez is scheduled for the first of two rehab appearances with the Timber Rattlers on Sunday.

It's a Macy's Day at the Ballpark too, with prizes, events, and great deals from Macy's. Enter at the Timber Rattlers facebook page for a chance for your family to sing Take Me Out to the Ballgame during the seventh inning stretch at this game. As part of Brewers Sunday, players and coaches will be wearing gold Rattlers jerseys based on the design of the Milwaukee Brewers.

Fans can play catch on-field courtesy of Rasmussen College before the Rattlers and River Bandits play their game. All Timber Rattlers players will be available for a postgame autograph session.

If you can't make it out to the game, tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 12:45pm. Sunday's game is also available to subscribers of MiLB.TV.

Wisconsin Boxscore

Zach Quintana was once again what I would term effectively wild through the first 3 innings, he was maybe close to the target Coulter setup 1 out of 5 or 6 pitches... I didn't count to be exact, but he wasn't hitting spots with any regularity at all. He missed to both sides of the plate as well as up and down featuring his FB which was regularly 89-90 according to the broadcast crew. His curveball didn't have much bite and he didn't locate it any better than his FB. He dropped what looked a change-up in the 4th inning and had the hitter way out in front, but I didn't see the pitch before or after. All 7 of Zach's walks came with 2 outs and he threw just 45 of 93 pitches for strikes in his eventful 4 innings. He did have 3 strike outs but those were more happy accidents than pitching acumen... on one Coulter was setup away and the FB came up and in but the hitter swung through it for a strike out.

Clint Coulter wasn't sharp behind the plate, I had mentioned that he had quit whiffing on FBs earlier this season, but tonight he did it twice in the 1st inning. The 1st time with no one on and the 2nd time with a runner stealing so it didn't show up in boxscore. In the second inning it appeared that he went to throw around the horn on a strike 2, he had a throwing error in the 4th, but punctuated the part of the game I watched with a caught stealing. He did however break out of his slump going 3-4 with a double and a HR.

Trevor Seidenberger bailed out newly arrived Clint Terry in the 9th. Terry pulled yeoman's duty with the short start from Quintana and managed to put 4.2 busy but scoreless innings.

Michael Ratterree (2-4,2B) had the other multi-hit day for the T-Rats.

Final: Huntsville 7, @Jackson 3

STARS WIN EIGHTH IN A ROW

Jackson, TN - The Huntsville Stars exploded for a five-run seventh inning, breaking a 2-2 tie, giving them a 7-3 win over the Jackson Generals Saturday night at The Ballpark at Jackson.

Stars RHP Tyler Cravy improved to 8-1 on the year after six solid innings. It was Cravy’s sixth quality start of the season in ten outings.

Cravy was backed by some early run support. In the second inning, Adam Weisenburger singled into right field scoring Mitch Haniger.

The Stars took a 2-0 lead in the third when Haniger singled into left field scoring Nick Ramirez. Haniger went 4-5 with 2 RBI.

In the sixth, the Generals scored their only runs against Cravy. With a runner at third and with one out, Leon Landry hit a fly ball to left center field. Stars left fielder Kentrail Davis and centerfielder D’Vontrey Richardson both went after the ball and collided with each other. Landry was able to round the bases and tie the game at 2-2.

The Stars put away the next time they came to the plate in the seventh.

Josh Prince led off with a double to the wall in left center. Richardson then broke the tie with an RBI single into left field giving the Stars a 3-2 lead.

Haniger added his second run producing hit of the night on an RBI single into right field.

Davis and Greg Hopkins then were walked back to back with the bases loaded, forcing in a pair of runs. The Stars made it 7-2 on Nick Shaw’s single into left field.

The Generals scored their final run in the ninth when Jamal Austin hit in a double play.

The Stars won their eighth straight game and improved to 39-17 while Jackson fell to 22-33.

The Stars lead Jackson 1-0 in their five game series. Game two is Sunday night. RHP Drew Gagnon (4-1, 2.27) will start for the Stars. Jackson will send RHP Matt Anderson (0-2, 8.38)to the mound. Sunday’s game can be heard with Steve Jarnicki starting at 5:50 PM CDT on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM and wtkiradio.com.

Huntsville Box Score

RF Mitch Haniger follows up our Friday praise with a 4-for-5 night (triple, three singles). He scored twice and drove in two as well. First baseman Nick Ramirez also reached four times (two singles, walk, HBP).

Even though they didn't truly break out here until the five-run 7th, the Stars had an amazing twenty AB's with RISP (6-for-20).

Eight men reached vs. RHP Tyler Cravy in his six innings, but only two scored (one earned). RHP Arcenio Leon will almost assuredly reach Nashville in the 2nd half - he needed only ten pitches total to rescue RHP Tanner Poppe from a two-out, bases-loaded jam, and then follow-up with a 1-2-3 8th inning (three groundouts).

Didn't realize a quality start was an actual stat... Nice game by Haniger. Worst field conditions of any minor league team. Resodding of a field in the last few days made it the nearly unplayable. Hopefully the collision doesn't sidetrack anyone for an extended period of time. Guarantee first half clinch this series!!!

Final: Brevard County 2, Charlotte 3

Manatees drop opener on walk-off to Stone Crabs

By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - Walk-off losses have been all too common for the Brevard County Manatees in 2014, as they suffered their fifth such defeat in a 3-2 loss against the Charlotte Stone Crabs on Saturday night at Charlotte Sports Park.

The Stone Crabs set up the game-winning hit with a rally against Chad Pierce. Kes Carter led off the inning with a ground ball single through the right side and he moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jake DePew.

Josh Sale worked a walk, but with first base open, that simply set up a potential inning-ending double play. The 'Tees were looking for a ground ball and got one off the bat of Marty Gantt, but the grounder was to the wrong spot.

Gantt hit a roller to deep shortstop and Yadiel Rivera made a sliding stop in the hole and threw to second base. The throw was barely late and all runners reached safely to load the bases. That opened the door for Jonathan Quinonez who drilled a single back up the middle to win the game.

Brevard County (28-26) had overcome a 2-0 deficit earlier in the game. With one out in the sixth, Nicky Delmonico hit a soft flair to shallow right field that dunked in over the glove of the third baseman, Quinonez. Delmonico tried to stretch the hit into a double and Quinonez made an attempt to throw him out. However, the throw skipped away from second baseman Tommy Coyle and Delmonico hustled to third.

The 'Tees had their chance to cut into the lead, with a runner 90 feet from home for the first time in the game. Stone Crabs' starting pitcher Austin Pruitt was almost able to work out of the jam. He induced a ground out to third for the second out, but catcher Justin O'Conner gave Brevard a break.

Delmonico led off of third with two outs and Rivera at the plate. Pruitt delivered a pitch high and O'Conner could not hold on. The ball skipped to the backstop and Delmonico scampered home with the Manatees' first run and made it a 2-1 game

The following inning, Nathan Orf delivered a big two-out hit - his third of the night - to tie the game. Mike Garza had singled to lead off the inning, but the next two Brevard hitters struck out and flied out. Orf came through with a double down the left field line to score Garza with the tying run.

Charlotte (26-27) scored its first two runs off Manatees' starting pitcher Damien Magnifico in the third and fourth. In the third, Gantt worked a one-out walk and Coyle chopped a ground ball up the middle that barely snuck through that scored Gantt with the first run of the ballgame. Patrick Leonard led off the next inning with a solo homer to left field.

Magnifico (3-4, 2.39 ERA) went five innings and allowed the two runs on three hits, while walking one and striking out three.

Brevard County will get another shot at the Stone Crabs on Sunday night at Charlotte Sports Park, with first pitch scheduled for 5:00 p.m. The Manatees will send Jorge Lopez (6-2, 3.17) to the hill against Charlotte's Reinaldo Lopez (3-2, 3.98).

Brevard County Box Score

Nathan Orf and Nicky Delmonico accounted for five of the seven Brevard hits. Orf went 3-for-4 with a double and Delmonico was 2-for-4 with a double. Orlando Arcia and Michael Garza had the only other Manatees base hits. Rough outing for Chad Pierce who gave up three hits and a walk in the tenth inning. The only batter he retired was on a sacrifice bunt.

Brevard County Play-By-Play

The Manatees put up a single run in each the sixth and seventh innings.

Brevard County Top of the 6th

Tyrone Taylor grounds out, third baseman Jonathan Quinonez to first baseman Patrick Leonard.

Nick Delmonico doubles (5) on a pop up to third baseman Jonathan Quinonez. Nick Delmonico advances to 3rd, on a throwing error by third baseman Jonathan Quinonez.

Alfredo Rodriguez grounds out, third baseman Jonathan Quinonez to first baseman Patrick Leonard.

With Yadiel Rivera batting, passed ball by Justin O'Conner, Nick Delmonico scores.

Nelson fans career-high 11 in Sounds' return

Brewers top prospect pitches into the eighth for sixth Triple-A victory

By Tyler Maun / MiLB.com

Jimmy Nelson was coming off a scoreless performance in his first Major League outing of the year that he deemed one of his worst starts of the season. A return to form in Nashville meant a rough night at the plate for yet another Pacific Coast League foe.

The Brewers' top prospect returned to Triple-A and recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts over 7 2/3 innings, limiting Iowa to a run on three hits, as Nashville pulled out a 2-1 win.

Nelson (6-1) carved through the Cubs with ease for most of his 10th Minor League start of the season. He fanned nine batters swinging and had Iowa hitters off-balance with his off-speed arsenal.

"The slider's pretty consistent for me from game to game," Nelson said. "It's usually pretty good, but today my changeup was probably the best it's been all year as far as being able to locate it and throw it in any count. I had some good movement on it today, so that was a big pitch for me. It kept the guys off the fastball a little bit. The fastball command was there today, two-seam and four-seam. When you can command the fastball early in the game, that opens up some other things."

Six days ago, Nelson stepped onto a big league mound for the first time this season and silenced Miami for 5 2/3 innings in a 7-1 victory. The 24-year-old right-hander struck out six while walking three but wasn't thrilled with the outing.

"That start I had in Miami, I felt like that was the worst my command had been all year," he said, "and I was really fighting my mechanics. I was pulling off a lot of pitches. Luckily, we had that five-run lead in the first couple of innings and we made some good defensive plays. That helped me battle through some command issues. Today, I was just trying to get back on track with my delivery and consistency, and I felt like I did a pretty good job with that."

With an extra day of rest between starts, Nelson went back to work on honing his delivery, looking to extend a seven-start unbeaten streak that dates to April 10.

"I've been working with our pitching coach, Fred Dabney. Our pitching coordinator, Rick Tomlin, was here the last couple of days," Nelson said. "For me, it's been the same thing all year mechanically, just tracking my head to the plate. This start today and my start in Omaha, when I had a really good start at their place (on April 21) have really been the two games where I felt I was the most consistent as far as tracking my head to the plate and not pulling off my pitches."

While Nelson was blanking the Cubs, Brewers No. 10 prospect Hunter Morris handed him a slim lead with a leadoff homer in the second. After Iowa battled back to tie the game on Jonathan Mota's sacrifice fly cashing in a Brett Jackson triple in the seventh, Sean Halton doubled home Hector Gomez with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the inning.

Nelson struck out the first two batters in the eighth before walking Ryan Kalish to end his night. The University of Alabama product threw 68 of 99 pitches for strikes and issued two free passes.

Iowa starter Chris Rusin (3-7) took the loss, yielding two runs on four hits while striking out five and walking one over seven innings.

Decent month of May for Tyler Cravy and Drew Gagnon. Cravy with a 4-0 (Could've easily have been 6-0) 1.22 ERA 37.0 IP 25 hits 5 ER 6 BB 27 K with opponents batting .195 against and a .83 WHIP. And Gagnon with a 2-0 1.60 ERA 33.2 IP 26 hits 6ER 20BB 27K and opponent avg .224. Wonder who's going to Nashville first?
