Predict picks 1-12! (Including the Brewers pick)

Verified Member

We're less than two weeks away from the first day of the June draft, and so while it may still be a little early I thought I would get the ball rolling with an individual predictions thread (as opposed to a mock draft of who you think should be picked).

Comment below with your predictions for the first twelve picks (through the Brewers at #12) anytime between now and the start of the draft on June 5, and after the draft I will score each submission (+1 point per correct prediction, +3 points if you get the Brewers pick correct) to see who won!

Note: +5 bonus points for "Brewers sign Kendrys Morales on June 4 and forfeit their pick"

Here's what I said on my site...

1. Houston – Carlos Rodon, LHP, NC State Houston’s system is loaded, and those kids are just starting to reach the big club now. I say it’s Rodon, because he’ll move quickly, matching up with their other talent at the big league level.

2. Miami – Alex Jackson, C, Rancho Bernardo HS, CA Jackson is perceived as the best bat in the draft, I’ll send him to Miami, who will still have plenty of good arms to pick from when their second pick comes up.

3. White Sox – Brady Aiken, LHP, Cathedral Catholic HS, CA Aiken could just as easily be the first player taken, and maybe he will be. I think the White Sox will get Aiken or Rodon, and I think their scouting staff will all sleep with a smile that night.

4. Cubs – Aaron Nola, RHP, LSU – Nola doesn’t have the skills that make scouts drool, except for one – this man knows how to take the ball, and get batters out. The Cubs will grab Nola, and he’ll reach Wrigley Field in 2016.

5. Minnesota – Tyler Kolek, RHP, Shepherd HS, TX - Kolek is the opposite of Nola, Kolek can break 100 MPH, but he’s only 18, so he’ll take a little while to reach the major leagues. The Twins will be lucky to get him at five.

6. Seattle - Nick Gordon, SS, Olympia HS, FL - Seattle is perpetually searching for offense, and the next Gordon in line is their best bet to find some with the sixth pick.

7. Philadelphia - Kyle Freeland, LHP, Evansville - With the big club aging quickly, the Phillies could go with an arm or a bat to fill a need. Freeland climbed the draft board all season long, and he’s a good fit for this pick.

8. Colorado - Sean Newcomb, LHP, Hartford - The Rockies will always need to develop as much pitching internally as they can, and in this spot, Newcomb is the best bet. While others have suffered from injuries or inconsistency, Newcomb has done the job all season long.

9. Toronto – Trea Turner, SS, NC State – Turner’s stock has been up, down, and up again. He’s one of the best college bats in this class, and he plays a premium position – Toronto’s picking again at 11, which is where they’ll take an arm.

10. Mets - Bradley Zimmer, OF, San Francisco - It could be Zimmer’s fellow college outfielder, Michael Conforto, but I’m going with Zimmer. The Mets need bats, and a college bat probably makes the most sense, because they’ll want him in New York sooner than later.

11. Toronto – Touki Toussaint, RHP, Coral Springs Christian Academy HS, FL - Touki’s got velocity, athleticism, and a mix of pitches – what he doesn’t have is polish. The Blue Jays already have an advanced bat in Trea Turner, so they’ll go with a young arm with upside, Toussaint it is.

12. Milwaukee – Max Pentecost, C, Kennesaw State - A catcher, who will actually remain a catcher, who can hit too. There are several players the Brewers could go with in this spot, but I’m sending them Pentecost. Max is a fairly safe pick, but he’s also a worthy choice who could help the Brewers for years.

1. Kolek - The Astros go with whoever signs the cheapest I'm not sure if it will be Aiken or Kolek but I am going to go against the consensus here and go with Kolek over Aiken.

2. Jackson - The Marlins love this kid a lot and have been hyping him a lot and I just don't see them passing on him no matter who is available with this pick.

3. Aiken - The White Sox go young here with Aiken and he is the best overall talent available also which I believe they are going to go with.

4. Rodon - The Cubs can not pass up Rodon here as he would arrive around the same time as their young hitters. This is going to be an expensive signing as Rodon is going to want #1 pick money. This is going to be a tough signing for the Cubs.

5. Gordon - I don't see the Twins taking a pitcher here and with their favorite player already being taken in Jackson Gordon is the next best available talent.

6. Nola - The Mariners would have liked to of gotten a HS bat here but with Nola still on the board the Mariners go with him instead and add more depth to their starting pitching in the minors.

7. Turner - I don't see the Phillies passing on Turner here.

8. Freeland - This is an interesting pick for the Rockies as pieces start to fall to them. I could see the Rockies going a million different ways but they are more than likely going to take a pitcher here and I like Freeland at this spot.

9. Toussaint - With Toronto's first pick they go with a HS pitcher who has a lot of raw talent this is going to be a long project for the Jays.

10. Newcomb - Hard to pass up a talented lefty with this pick for the Mets and they are lucky that he falls to them.

11. Zimmer - Was looking at Holmes or Zimmer with this pick but with the Jay's already taking a pitcher I see them going with a bat here.

12. Holmes - This is a hard pick to make as the Brewers could go with just about anyone. But I believe Holmes is #1 on their board.

1-3 (CHW) = Tyler Kolek, RHP, Shepherd HS (Texas)

1-4 (CHC) = Max Pentecost, C, Kennesaw State (pre-draft deal saving the Cubs well short of the $4.6 mil slot value allowing them to go over-slot on pitching with other selections)

1-5 (MIN) = Alex Jackson, C/OF, Rancho Bernardo HS (California)

1-6 (SEA) = Nick Gordon, SS, Olympia HS (Florida)

1-7 (PHI) = Aaron Nola, RHP, Louisiana State

1-1 (HOU) =Brady Aiken.

No Brainer here that delivery is spot on consistent and Of any pick in this draft, he's by far the safest with the high upside

1-2 (MIA) =Tyler Kolek

Don't believe the falling stock. This guy has too good a delivery with his size and the FB at 100? This is a pitchers league, batters aren't good vs. velocity. Sure-Fire Ace is what that means

1-3 (CHW) =Alex Jackson

Missing out on Kolek/Aiken the Sox take the best position bat to boost their system

1-4 (CHC) =Carlos Rodon

Best available pick here. Cubs wanted Kolek wanted Jackson. They'll sell Rodon as the hyped former #1-1 projected pick as a great value to get at 4 and they are lucky But Rodon's future is one that likely doesn't turn out as being top 12 from this draft.

1-5 (MIN) =Nick Gordon

Area of need in the organization and Gordon is the perfect fit falls right at his value on the board. Twins luck out

1-6 (SEA) =Aaron Nola

This is a fast track pick for Seattle. They are in a win now process and adding Nola to their rotation possibly by the end of 2015 only helps that

1-7 (PHI) =Touki Toussaint

High Upside talent here. There's excitement with this pick and Phi goes for that vs. the safer College pitchers on the board

1-8 (COL) =Kyle Freeland

His pitching has that suits Coors field feel to it. Thus Colorado goes for it with the pick

1-9 (TOR) =Grant Holmes

High upside pick here with Beede/Newcombe/Zimmer yet to be picked it means they wil get to choose from 2 of those 3 for sure. Holmes may not have made it back to them

1-10 (NYM) =Sean Newcombe

Best available pick you follow your board this early. No position player?!! How will the Mets ever score runs. The Dickey trade showed how. Harvey,Gee,Niese,Wheeler Two of these guys will be traded before Newcombe climbs to the Staff so there will be a need for his arm

1-11 (TOR) =Bradley Zimmer

The comparison I recently heard is of Christian Yelich. That's a top of the Order bat with solid tools all around. And a pick Toronto is sure to sign easily

1-12 (MIL) =Jeff Hoffman

The talent at 10 on down is tough to differentiate. What wasn't tough was that Hoffman was above 10 prior to his TJ. No Holmes, No Toussaint, The Brewers as in 2012 in drafting Roache, take the guy who never had a chance being there for their selection had he not gotten injured prior to the draft delaying their progress. The bigger part in this selection is that Milwaukee can potentially save a little money while drafting a top 6 talented player. It feels like a no brainer with two picks at 41&50 to try taking that savings and draft a player later with 1st rd talent (but a deep draft causes them to fall) on their 2nd/3rd picks and are capable of signing them.

This is a fairly down the line to rankings draft no real surprises. With the draft pool and money allotment I don't think teams get tricky with their selections, at least in the top 12. It's not like KC last year where they had a top 10 pick and then 34th to play with.(seeing Manaea fall) Just not happening this year. KC has the best ability to do something weird again with their later selections but that's after 12. If Toronto had a QO comp pick or a competitive balance 1st rd selection they get crazy but it's 9/11 then 49. Not 9,11 and 30-38.

Thank you.

I feel as if I should also get a "half credit" for picking Gatewood to land with the Brewers?

Never thought in my wildest dreams that Jacob would still me there at #41.

And then if he was, they would probably pass on him just to break my heart...
