Stars' notes via Steve Jarnicki --

With the win Saturday, the Stars already guaranteed themselves a series win over Birmingham, giving them their eighth series victory in the first nine series of the season. It was the third straight series win by the Stars where it had already been decided after the first three games. Five of the eight series that the Stars have won this year have also been decided after the first three games of the series. They also won the first three games against Pensacola, Tennessee, Jackson, and Chattanooga. The Stars did not win their 8th series of last year until July 4th-8 at Tennessee…The Stars did not win any of the four series they played against Birmingham last year. The last Stars series win over Birmingham was May 22nd-May 26th in Huntsville when the Stars won four out of five…

Taylor Jungmann gave the Stars their third straight quality of start of the series in the first three games against the Barons. Huntsville starters are 3-0 in the series with a 0.44 ERA (1 ER in 20.66 IP). It was Jungmann’s team leading 6th quality start in his first nine outings of the season. It was the Stars 19th quality start of the year. When they receive a quality start from their starters, they are 15-4… The Stars won their fifth straight home game and have now won eight of their last nine at “The Joe”…

Jason Rogers extended his hitting streak to six consecutive games with a single in the 5th inning last night. During his hitting streak, he is 9 for his last 20 (.450 average) with a grand slam and seven RBI… Stars C Adam Weisenburger had another hit and has one hit in 8 out of last 10 games... Since April 16th, he has raised his batting average from .130 all the way up to .325 going into today.

SHUTOUTS: The Stars have recorded a Southern League best seven shutouts. They produced three consecutive shutouts May 3rd against Montgomery and May 5th-6th against Jackson. They are on pace for 22 shutouts this season. The Southern League record for most shutouts in season is 24 held by the Greenville Braves in 1992. Their season was 143 games, where the Stars play 140 games. Chipper Jones, C Javy Lopez and P Pedro Borbon were on that team.

So Rattlers have 2 hits, a double and Ratterree just hit a HR out of the stadium to tie the game in the 9th, and now Brennan doubled as I'm typing this.

So now just 3 hits in the game, but all for extra bases, and only Neda's double off Reyes.

Final: Brevard County 2, Jupiter 3

Jupiter stun 'Tees in walk-off fashion, 3-2

By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees

JUPITER, Fla. - After the Brevard County Manatees missed an opportunity to take the lead in the top of the inning, Ryan Goetz delivered a walk-off, RBI single in the Jupiter Hammerheads, 3-2 victory at Roger Dean Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Josh Adams led off the frame for Jupiter by serving the first pitch of the inning from Chad Pierce into center field for a single. Noah Perio sacrificed him to second on a bunt, to put a runner in scoring position with one out.

Blake Barber would come in to pinch-run for the catcher Adams and advance to third base on a wild pitch by Pierce. With the infield in, Goetz served a blooper into shallow left field to score Barber and give the Hammerheads (20-23) the walk-off win.

The Manatees (22-19) had a chance to grab the lead in the top of the ninth as Jupiter reliever Reid Redman, who would go on to pick up the victory, plunked Tyrone Taylor to start the inning. With one out, Alfredo Rodriguez lined a single to right to put runners at first and second.

After a wild pitch by Redman advanced both runners to second and third, the righty settled down. Redman retired Victor Roache on a pop out to short and got Yadiel Rivera to hit a lazy fly ball to center to keep the game tied.

Jupiter jumped out to an early lead by picking up two runs in the first. After Manatees starter Tyler Wagner (3-2, 1.76 ERA) struck out Jesus Solorzano to begin the game, but then the wheels fell off for Brevard County defensively.

Terrence Dayleg hit a chopper out in front of home plate, however Wagner and catcher Parker Berberet could not decide on who was going to field the ball. Berberet finally took charge, but bobbled the ball and Dayleg reached on the error.

Matt Juengel followed by hitting a sharp ground ball to third. Nicky Delmonico could not corral it as the ball kicked off the heel of his glove and down the left field line. Both he and Rivera chased after the ball, which had rolled into foul territory, leaving no one to cover third base. That allowed Dayleg and Juengel to advance to second and third with the heart of the order due up.

Unlike the first two games of the series, the Hammerheads came through with runners in scoring position. On three pitches, Viosergy Rosa and Colin Moran roped RBI singles to right and left field, respectively, to give Jupiter and early 2-0 advantage.

That was all Wagner surrendered as the right-hander was saddled with another no decision. He allowed just those two runs - one earned - on four hits, walked one and struck out three over six innings of work.

Brevard County would find a way to chip away at the lead. In the fourth inning, Taylor led off by smacking his Professional Baseball-leading 20th double of the year down the left field line. Taylor then came across to score on a pair of ground outs by Delmonico and Rodriguez to cut the Jupiter lead in half.

The Manatees were able to finally tie the game in the seventh inning off Hammerheads' starter Josh Hodges (0-4, 7.69). After Rodriguez was hit by a pitch with one out, Roache grounded one down the third base line. The ball kicked off the bag and caromed towards the Jupiter bullpen. Rodriguez was able to hustle home from first to score the game-tying run as Roache rolled into second base with the RBI double, his third hit of the game.

Much like Wagner, those were the only two runs Hodges would allow. The right-hander, who had surrendered at least five runs in six of eight outings entering this afternoon, put together arguably his best start of the season. Hodges went a season-high seven innings, allowed four hits, walked one and struck out two, while lowering his ERA almost a full run.

Brevard County will look to take the series tomorrow morning when they wrap up their four-game series against Jupiter with first pitch scheduled for 10:35 a.m.

The Manatees will rely upon righty Damien Magnifico (2-3, 2.90) to get the team back on the winning track. Jupiter will call on fellow right-hander Scott Lyman (3-2, 1.80), who is seventh in the Florida State League in earned run average.

Brevard County Box Score

Another good start from Tyler Wagner. Six innings with two runs allowed and only one was earned. Kind of odd that he only went 75 pitches but I guess they had to get Gorzelanny his innings. Victor Roache had a nice 3-for-4 day with a double. He's still batting under .200 but leads the Manatees in home runs and runs batted in. It would be nice to see his average start to climb a little bit after his slow start. Tyrone Taylor picked up another double, his 20th of the season. I've listened to a good amount of Manatees games this year and it seems like a lot of his doubles have come on ground balls down the line. So while the extra base hits are great, they may not translate to home runs down the road the way they do for a lot of young doubles hitters.

Brevard County Play-By-Play

The Manatees picked up a run in the fourth and another in the seventh.

Alfredo Rodriguez hit by pitch.

Perfect tenth gives Rattlers extra-inning win at Peoria

Wisconsin scores six runs in tenth inning to beat Chiefs 7-1

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

PEORIA, IL - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers offense was silent for most of the game on Sunday at Dozer Park. Peoria took a 1-0 lead to the ninth inning, but it was the Rattlers who would triumph in a 7-1 decision that took ten innings.

Peoria (25-17) scored a run in the first inning. Jimmy Bosco doubled with one out. Juan Herrera followed with a single to drive in Bosco for a 1-0 lead.

Chiefs starter Arturo Reyes took a no-hit bid into the top of the seventh. Rafael Neda broke up the no-no with a two-out double down the line in right. Chiefs reliever Brandon Lee came on to get the final out of the seventh to preserve the 1-0 lead.

Wisconsin received a fine pitching performance out of starter Taylor Williams. The right-hander pitched 6-1/3 innings, struck out seven, and allowed five hits. But, the one run in the first inning had him on the hook for the loss.

Michael Ratterree changed that with a long home run to left field in the top of the ninth. Ratterree, who had struck out his first three times at the plate, blasted a 1-0 pitch from Brandon Lee out of the stadium with one out to even the score 1-1.

Wisconsin (20-22) had lost the last two games to the Chiefs in this series in extra innings. That streak would not reach three straight extra-innings losses.

Johnny Davis started the rally with a one out walk and a steal of second. Chris McFarland was next and his grounder back to the mound should have been the second out of the inning. But, reliever Jeff Rauh saw Davis too far away from second and tried to get the lead runner. The speedy Davis eluded the rundown and dove safely back into second base to give Wisconsin two runners on base with only one out.

Clint Coulter made Peoria pay. The Rattlers designated hitter sent a sinking line drive to left. Kenny Peoples-Walls made a dive for the ball and missed. The ball rolled to the wall. By the time the ball was retrieved, Davis and McFarland had scored and Coulter rumbled to third with a triple that gave Wisconsin a 3-1 lead.

Jose Pena made it 4-1 as he lined a single through the drawn-in infield to get Coulter home.

Later in the inning, Neda and Paul Eshleman delivered RBI singles to pad Wisconsin's lead to 6-1.

The Chiefs brought position player Jake Stone on in relief of Rauh and one of his first pitches was wild to allow Neda to score from third for a 7-1 lead.

Tyler Alexander, who came on in relief of Williams in the seventh inning, pitched 3-2/3 innings of perfect relief to earn his third consecutive win. Alexander struck out five, including the final batter of the game to finish with a flourish.

The Timber Rattlers return home to face the Kane County Cougars on Monday night. Barrett Astin (4-2, 3.21) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Kane County will counter with Juan Paniagua (0-2, 4.50). Game time is 6:35pm.

The first game of the three game series is a Qdoba Q*Monday. Purchase a lunch entrée at either Qdoba location in Appleton (3813 E. Calumet Street or 4343 W. Wisconsin Avenue) on Monday before the Rattlers host the Cougars to receive a ticket to any regular season Monday home game during 2014.

If you can't make it to the ballpark, you may catch the action several ways. MyNEW 32's Sports Showdown will broadcast the game on television starting with their pregame show at 6:00pm. The radio broadcast will be available on AM1280, WNAM and IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:15pm. Subscribers to MiLB.TV may watch the game that way.

HOME RUN:

Michael Ratterree (7th, 0 on in 9th off Brandon Lee, 1 out)

WP: Tyler Alexander (4-3)

LP: Jeff Rauh (0-1)

TIME: 2:51

ATTN: 4,167

Wisconsin Boxscore

Finally beat the Cards! I won't lie, I was concerned for a while there, but this young Rattler got over the top and finished off an extra inning game against Peoria.

I didn't tune in until the 2nd so I missed Chris' call of the first inning but Taylor Williams was solid the rest of the way, reaching the mid 90s with his FB as I mentioned earlier and scattering 3 hits before being lifted after a walk and sacrifice bunt to open the 7th. Erickson went for the lefty-lefty match-up bringing in Tyler Alexander with the runner in scoring position. Mehring said multiple times that today was the best Alexander had looked all season as he was effectively mixing his pitches and keeping the hitters off balance.

For the Cards Arturo Reyes was a 40th round pick last year but he's been really solid since joining the organization. Damn those redbirds do well in the later rounds of the draft... and I was feeling really good about Taylor Brennan being a 37th round pick and performing reasonably well so far this season.

Since the Rattlers only had 1 hit until the 9th Rafael Neda (2-5,2B) ended up being the only T-Rat with an multi-hit game, but that 10th inning barrage sure was fun. This is Neda's 3rd trip through the Midwest League but he's making the most of it, if Houle would have been healthy one has to wonder if he would have even gotten the chance?

Sounds Win Sunday Pitchers' Duel, 2-1

Nashville's Nelson Collects 5th Win and 9th Quality Start

Nashville Sounds

(MIKE STRASINGER )

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds outdueled the visiting Oklahoma City RedHawks by a narrow 2-1 margin in Sunday afternoon's series finale at Greer Stadium.

Starting pitcher Jimmy Nelson (5-1) guided the Sounds defensively, recording his ninth consecutive quality start by holding the 'Hawks to one run on four hits over seven innings of work.

The Brewers top prospect fanned five Oklahoma batters en route to his fifth victory of the season before reliever Brent Leach took over in the eighth.

The Sounds offense was held hitless through the first four innings, but picked up three base knocks in the fifth inning to break out of a scoreless tie with a pair of runs.

Outfielder Jeremy Hermida cracked a broken bat infield single to start the action for Nashville and came around to score on Taylor Green's double to the right-field corner. Green advanced to third on the throw to home plate and was driven home on Kevin Mattison's single into shallow right field.

Pete Orr recorded Nashville's fourth and final hit in the eighth inning; both teams finished with four hits.

Closer Donovan Hand logged 1 1/3 scoreless innings to notch his eighth save of the season, one shy of the PCL lead.

Adron Chambers plated the RedHawks only run of the game, scoring on a groundout after leading off the sixth inning with a single up the middle.

RedHawks starting pitcher and the Astros number four-rated prospect Mike Foltynewicz (3-3) took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits in six innings.

The Sounds will begin a fresh four-game set against the Omaha Storm Chasers (AAA-Royals) on Monday night at Greer Stadium with LHP Brad Mills (3-0, 1.45) getting the start for Nashville opposite Omaha's RHP P.J. Walters (0-4, 9.10). Broadcaster Jeff Hem has the call on 102.5 The Game.

Nashville Boxscore

Well the pitching match-up certainly lived up to it's billing in this one. Jimmy Nelson's full final line 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 WP, 1 HBP, and 5 SO while throwing 69 of 108 pitches (season high?) for strikes. A pretty fantastic effort.

Sweet sure does play the platoon advantage, he brought in Donovan Hand to replace Brent Leach only to make switch hitter Robbie Grossman turn around and bat left handed. Donovan got him to pop up to end the 8th. Hopefully with 2 consecutive scoreless outings Hand is starting to get his mojo back.

Attendance 466 on a Sunday? Well, that won't be the case next year in Biloxi.

Southpaw Brent Suter adds pickoff master to his resume, nabbing two here.

No errors, two double plays turned, a Mitch Haniger outfield assist, that'll do.
