Community Top 20 - Today (May 23) is LAST DAY to submit your list

Brewer Fanatic Contributor

BF.net is doing a community Top 20. I've broken this off the 'Power 50' thread so that we can start fresh.

Rules:

Submit your list of Top 20 prospects by posting it in this thread, or by sending me a message, by Friday, May 23. Please include 20 prospects, in order from top to bottom. Before you submit your list, make sure you have 20 names (not 19 or 21) - and make sure no one is listed twice. Also, if you're including Devin or Taylor Williams (or both), make sure you indicate the first name so I know who you want in a particular spot. I don't think we have any other players with the same last names, but indicate a first name if you think there might be any confusion.

I will tabulate all the votes when done, giving 20 points to the top pick, 19 to the 2nd pick, and so forth. We'll post the results when done. Ultimately, it will be a Top 25 or Top 30, depending on the how many guys turn up in the voting. I'll include the player rankings, important stats, position, team, age and so forth. We can update it periodically.

If a player is not considered a rookie by MLB, he is ineligible for this list. That means no Fiers, no Gindl, no Khris Davis, no Tim Dillard :laughing.

Wang is ineligible for this list as well. The reason, as Splitter pointed out, is that the guy is either going to be on the team the entire season, or sent back to Pittsburgh. So let's just keep him off any list.

So please, get your Top 20 list in before May 23. If there are any questions, please message me, or post in this thread.

Thanks to everyone for participating.

PS - Splitter, I'll get your list from the 'Power 50' thread - thanks for getting things started.

I dropped Hellweg, and I can live with that. I didn't list Wang, because he's either a big leaguer, or he's headed back to Pittsburgh. I'm becoming a big Chris McFarland fan, and I hope he forces me to move him up a bunch when we do this again. I pushed Coulter pretty hard, up to number three...yes, there are others who could fill that spot, but none of them are forcing me to list them there right now, Coulter wins the numbers test to grab that spot at the moment.

I don't think we have any other players with the same last names, but indicate a first name if you think there might be any confusion.

Davis (Kentrail & Johnny)

Diaz (Miguel, Brandon, Victor, and Juan)

Gomez (Milton and Hector)

Pena (Jose and Ariel)

There are actually several more, but these are the ones that might involve votes.

I'd be interested to see your 'last 5 in, last 5 out' list, as well as anyone else's. I love this stuff!

Comments.

1. Tyrone Taylor - I still believe he's roughly comparable to Cubs' prospect Albert Almora and is the highest ceiling player in the system above R ball.

2. Jimmy Nelson - I think he'll be a solid mid rotation guy for the Brewers.

3. Clint Coulter - Has done nothing to convince me he's a catcher but I love what he's done with the bat this year.

4. Orlando Arcia - He's having the season I figured he would to this point. Hopefully the bat starts to ascend as he nears Milwaukee.

5. Mitch Haniger - disappointing start to the season but I'm not moving him down yet

6. Devin Williams - Very curious to see what 2014 has in store for the system's highest ceiling pitcher at this time

7. Victor Roache - Awful start to the season, very similar to last year, hopefully his second half also mirrors what he did last year.

8. Hunter Morris - He's having a nice season, his only problem remains his selectivity at the plate.

9. Johnny Hellweg - TJ surgery is disappointing considering he's out of options, he'll be a bullpen guy for someone at some point.

10. David Goforth - I still like him as a back of the bullpen type.

11. Michael Reed - Everything you would want in a corner OF except for power which will determine his ultimate ceiling as a player. If he develops some he could be very intriguing down the road.

12. Taylor Jungmann - Same steady pitcher he's been since joining the organization, should be in AAA, maybe a #3 best case.

13. Tyler Wagner - When Tyler is on he's just nasty, he'll be stuck in BC until the logjam in front of him clears.

14. David Denson - The average isn't there but David is not lost at the plate, he displays a good approach in many ABs. He's similar to Arcia last year in that he'll get himself into trouble trying to out-guess the pitcher at times and make weak contact or strike out.

15. Tucker Neuhaus - I'm hoping last season was a fluke and he establishes himself this year in Helena.

16. Hiram Burgos - Hasn't found his command all year, it's probably going to be a process for him to settle back in.

17. Chris McFarland - No Brewer prospect has transformed their body the way McFarland has. His D is still a bit shakey but this new found power is very exciting.

18. Tyler Cravy - No longer the 4 seam pitcher who was hitting 93-94 all those years ago in Helena he's now a sinker baller working 90-91. He probably fits best long-term in the bullpen but he could maybe be a back of the rotation type as well.

19. Nick Delmonico - Just recently returned to action, I've never been all that high on him, but he has shown well in the past and this is more of a reputation ranking.

20. Jose Pena - He's very intriguing to me but has run hot and cold at the plate so far. I think he's very capable of posting a mid .800 OPS at WI this year. He has nice size but doesn't get to play much in the field with all of the OF on the Rattler roster, his swing can also get a little long, but he crushes mistakes.

Last guys out:

Michael Ratterree, Taylor Williams, Taylor Brennan, Garrett Cooper, Damien Magnifico, Drew Gagnon, Jed Bradley, Ariel Pena, Jorge Lopez.

3. Clint Coulter - Has done nothing to convince me he's a catcher but I love what he's done with the bat this year.

His great start at the plate was so refreshing after his struggles last year, but i have wondered how his catching skills are developing or not developing?

Obviously it would be more ideal for Coulter to become at least a solid defensive catcher if his bat continues to show good promise given catchers who can hit well are generally rare. That said, if his catching skills don't come along well, i'd hope the organization doesn't wait to long to give him a position switch to learn.

Speaking of that, if Coulter eventually shows that he just won't be able to cut it as a catcher, but his bat stays good, would first base be his most likely position to be switched to?

I posted a little a bit about this in the LR's this week, but I'll try to quickly sum up those observations here for those that don't read the LRs on a daily basis, EVEN THOUGH YOU ALL SHOULD! ;)

Last year Clint would literally whiff on FBs, as in he would barely make contact with them as they went bye. I had never seen that before and it didn't take me long to question his placement in WI last season based on what he was doing. He also dropped a ton of balls regardless of the type of pitch, that's something you see occasionally, but not 5-8 times per game.

This year he's not whiffing anything anymore (thankfully), and the drops are down to 1-2 per game, but he's still awful on balls in the dirt. On any low pitch he simply stabs at it with his glove trying to pick it, I've never seen him block a ball on his knees in any game I've watched, nor do I recall a play where Chris described him blocking a pitch on a radio broadcast. There are very few catchers in A ball who won't block a ball, and if he won't block he's simply not a major league catcher. Most of the WPs I've seen when Clint is catching aren't good pitches but they shouldn't have made it through him to the backstop either. Some of those pitches could have easily been scored as PBs as well since they weren't technically in the dirt but crossed him up. He currently has 5 errors and 4 passed balls in only 22 games behind the plate so while he's made progress, he's still well below average.

His arm can cover up many of his defensive deficiencies when the pitchers help him and keep the runners honest at all, but his CS stealing numbers aren't indicative of his general aptitude behind the plate. Much like with Brett Lawrie, the Brewers are letting Clint do what he wants to do, he wants to catch so they are keeping him there.

I would hope if he gets moved the Brewers would try him at 3rd because of his arm before any other position to see if he could be a competent defender there. Coulter seems to be a good young man and by all accounts he works extremely hard and is very coachable, it's not his talent or commitment that is the issue. If he doesn't have that instinct to get down and block by now, how long is it going to take to develop it if he ever does? I just think given what he's shown the hill is too steep to climb as a catcher.

I tend to weight actual production at AA and above higher than some, but I am also very cautious about big stat lines from guys repeating a level. On the tools side ceiling and positional scarcity are important. Hence Morris while having solid production again has pretty much shown himself to be topping out as a platoon first basemen with an acceptable glove. Handy, but less useful in my mind than a guy like Zarraga who can be a bench option at catcher and 1st and maybe even more yet.

I hope they give him at least through next year to work on his defense before moving him unless you move him to 3rd. Other than that, I think he's a good enough athlete that if his bat really forces the issue, he can learn a corner OF spot or 1st base very quickly. Melvin did just recently say that he might get to big to catch(though that doesn't make that much sense to me as he's certainly not fat, or lacking flexibility and Weiters and Posey are both big guys), but they're going to keep him there until he forces them to move him for whatever that's worth.

But I'd prefer to let him stay behind the plate as long as possible to see if he can develop. He's very athletic, very quick for a big guy, has a very strong arm. He can square himself up pretty and get in front of balls in the dirt, but he does stab way too often. I haven't seen him miss as many fastballs as Crew has, but I have not seen him play that many times.

I just believe that you give a guy like Coulter who has the physical tools more time to develop. It obviously takes catchers longer to develop behind the plate than it does other position players. He's still just 20 years old.

1. Jimmy Nelson - Could probably put up the same numbers as Garza right now.

2. Tyrone Taylor - Averages better than a hit a game at every level thus far.

3. Tyler Cravy - An anomaly, gotten better as he's moved up. Only WHIP better than his (.785) in AA Southern League is now in ML with 2-0 record(Chase Anderson).

4. Clint Coulter - Listed as a DH in an NL organization. Will he end up at first base or what? Does he really even want to catch?

5. Mitch Haniger - I think he needs some kind of spark. Big league spring training invite got him hyped then he kinda fell back in to AA, I expect him to turn it on down the stretch this year.

6. Taylor Jungmann - If he stays healthy, his ceiling should remain high.

7. Jason Rogers - Last years Brewers Milb player of the year. His average is currently higher than last years. Yet not on any ones list. Will be a utility man whole career probably.

8. Brent Suter - As you can see, I don't think these AA guys are to be taken lightly. They're dominating the southern league.

9. Hunter Morris - Could probably put up the same numbers, if not better, than Overbay if given the chance.

10. David Goforth - Like Cravy has steadily gotten better as he's moved up. Would like to see his stuff keep getting better if he's gonna have a shot at the 25-man in a few years.

11. Jedidiah Bradley - Who will move faster through the minors, Jed or Wang once his bitter pill is swallowed and he's sent down?

12. Michael Reed - More walks than hits. The ML roster should take notes.

13. Hobbs Johnson - 43K/7BB so far. Not the biggest guy, but he's a gamer.

14. Nick Ramirez - Seems like he's almost hit for the cycle each week this year but his average doesn't show it.

15. Adam Weisenburger - Patiently waiting to see if this is his break out year. Defensively he's a brick wall, and with an OBP of .457, I think we're all hoping the kid can be legit MLB stud in a few years or sooner.

16. Taylor Williams - Pretty good start to the year, think his body is still filling out.

17. David Denson - Still less than 100 games in to minor league career but OBP % .381 and a K/3AB needs some cleaning up.

18. Sean Zarragga - 34 hits in 88 at bats this year. Pretty old to be a prospect, I'll move him down if/when his numbers completely cool.

19. Tyler Wagner - 10 ER through 9 GS this year, that's nice.

20. Victor Roache - Needs to get his act together. 179K to 144 hits in his young career. With time hopefully he develops a keener eye.
